Stopped for a quickie again (http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...), and true to brand promise, found a similar experience to my prior Book One read.

One challenge in picking up a serial graphic in book form is that it's been a long, long delay since the The Walking Dead, Book One. I didn't recognize a couple of characters, and it was disconcerting to re-discover that the graphic versions don't always correlate with the actors, so I couldn't rely on clues from the series. At times, the drawin...more

As in Book One, Kirkman does an excellent job of imagining a chaotic world stripped of all law and order, where everyday life is distilled to its most simplest elements: hunger, shelter, and survival.

The characters are well realized and the black and white artwork sets the right tone. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I will say that some characters that you might expect to survive, don't, which gives the feeling that no one is safe. Then again, that's life isn't it?

Having made it through Book Two of THE WALKING DEAD comic series, I have to comment upon how drastically different that the series of comics is from the TV series of the same title. I know that it isn't always productive to compare literature to its representative TV series or film and vice-versa, but considering the popularity of both, especially the TV series, I feel the need to do so in this case. I have come to see characters as being even more different from their counterparts on the TV ser...more

So, not listed among my book resolutions for 2013 was the intention to use the library more, especially when catching up with graphic novel series and seeking current science non-fiction. Well, I might have gotten a little carried away already. On the fourth I went and checked out six books and a movie. Of course, five of those books were graphic novels, but it's still excessive.

The first book off of the pile was Walking Dead. It was the most urgent as it was the series I'd read last. Reading i...more

I think I've figured out one reason I keep coming back to graphic novels: they're books that luxuriate in their book-ness. These Walking Dead collections, for example, have black flyleaves that are a decadent weight and textured like linen. The Sandman series (unfortunately, this isn't the case with TWD) has ribbon bookmarks bound into each collection. The covers are large, catchy, elaborate. Even the glossy interior pages have heft. These are books that capture our senses and don't apologize fo...more

How I Came To Read This Book: I'm pretty sure the library took a million billion years to get this to me. But that's where it came from.

The Plot: The book picks up where the last one left off - our intrepid heroes have discovered a prison that may be a safe haven (and a well-stockpiled one too). But first, they have to tangle with the current occupants of the jail - whether they're dead or undead is a different matter altogether. A new discovery is made about the zombie disease, and tensions rea...more

The second book of the Walking Dead comics was AMAZING. Better than the first one by a long shot and if my uncle does not finish the third book soon, I am going to go all zombie on his butt and bite his head off so I can read it.

The second book sees the introduction of fan favorite Michonne (which I still don't know how to pronounce). I can see why she's a fan favorite. The woman is a bad *ss. I mean, she walks around with zombie pets. How freakin' cool is that? The group doesn't trust her yet -...more

I started reading The Walking Dead back before zombies was the cool thing to be into and way before the TV show. What I like most about the Walking dead is that it really isn't about zombies. Shocker! Yes, it is set in a post apocalyptic time where zombies roam the earth, but so much of this series is about human relationships. It is about what different people do in survival-type situations, how they react and how they treat other people. Who steps up to be the leader, who takes what role in a...more

I think this is by far my favorite of the hard cover collections. The action is this volume is pretty non-stop, the events all monumental for this little group of followers. From clearing out the prison, to all the early deaths that happen there, to Rick's deteriorating mental state leading up to his amazing speech at the end that has such a great ending line. I don't think I've ever seen such a great use of the titular line in a graphic novel.

As I said, as of this point I think this is the best...more

I really enjoyed Volume Two of The Walking Dead. The characters felt more defined. The tension felt higher. Kirkman is doing great at sewing seeds of distrust in everybody, for both the reader and the characters. Throw in how quickly things can turn from good to horrible and this volume had me flying through the pages wondering what was going to happen next.
Another thing that made Miles Behind Us exceptional was the deep questions asked late in the book. How human are zombies? Should they be pi...more

Man, these are SO HARD to review without giving it all away. So I'll just preface this with SPOILERS! PROCEED WITH CAUTION!

Ok, so now that that's out of the way, Hardcover Volume 2 finds our hungry survivors at the gates of a prison. Rick and Tyrsese go gang busters killing zombies to clear the prison yard and as they start to explore, they find four former prisoners locked into the cafeteria, which is stocked with FOOD! Even though they feel somewhat safer,...more

Great addition to the series. I loved the drama in this one and the way the characters are evolving and changing (or in some cases devolving). The crazy action was pretty intense. I felt like some one died every few pages and they probably did. The writing was good, but sometimes the characters get a bit "speechy" where they are making these huge statements that last forever and doesn't sound like natural conversation. I also had a bit of a problem with the artwork. I feel like it is getting har...more

This volume covers comic issues 13-24. The hardback makes a pretty good value, and like the previous one, places the story in one long continuous arc (no pagination in the book or divisions other than two chapters). For readers who like to read their graphic novels in a compilation versus waiting for the monthly, this is a nice way to do it. Let's look at this volume then.

The drama continues to remain high. The author is keeping the suspense and tension alive as no character is safe. Anyone can...more

If it's possible in a zombie apocalypse story Book Two gets darker. As the group settles in to a bit of a routine they find that there are dangers everywhere in life. Even when you think you may be safe you still have to battle for survival. But that's life. We're all fighting off death at every turn the trick is doing so without losing your sanity.

I feel like this book was lost at times. Some of the conflicts feel forced as characters go from friends to enemies in just a panel or two. Admitted...more

It starts with a flash back that fills in a few details and gives some tantalising clues to more msytery and drama to come.I bought this one out of sequence becuase the book stor that carries them here in Bangkok Thailand was sold out of the second book when I bought 4 and 5, a friend purchased 1 and 3 in California for me and brought them over to share. Yes the book is that good! So good that I asked a friend who was visiting his family in California to pick it up for me there because I couldn'...more

Since I had read the first book in this graphic novel series, I thought I'd give the second one a go, since I still wasn't completely sold on the original story (before the TV show).

I'm a huge fan of the TV show, so it's a little hard to read the books when so many things are different! I know that TV tends to change a lot of things, but there are definitely parts of the story told in the graphic novels that I wish were on the TV show. Of course, while the TV show is CRAZY gory at parts, the gr...more

The rag-tag group of survivors of the zombie apocalypse stumble upon a prison with two circles of fences just in time. With the warm weather more zombies are active now that they're no longer frozen. Of course they also discover locked in the cafeteria three surviving inmates. Attempts to make the odd mix of original survivors, inmates, and the farmers into one group might be a task too huge to overcome. Especially when you add in a mysterious woman who arrives with two pet zombies she leads by...more

Having enjoyed both Book One of The Walking Dead as well as the first season and a half of the AMC adaptation, it was with high expectations that I sat down to devour Book Two. I was not disappointed.

If Book One focused on the how the survivors reacted in the immediate aftermath of the apocalypse, Book Two focuses on their continuing drive to find safety, security, and ultimately, community. That drive is met with obstacles at every step, and Book Two did not make me any more envious of their si...more

WAY better than the first one! Pretty much all the things I hated about the first one were fixed in this one. The bolding, while still very prevalent, has been toned down. The quality of the art has gone up. And there is still tons of drama and unlikely characters dying. And they still keep the story going at a quick pace, even though they've been in the same area for the entire book!

It's also nice to see that Rick isn't totally perfect and in control now, it makes him seem a lot more human. Car...more

The epic story of survival continues in this second hardcover book collecting issues #13-24. I read the first book of "The Walking Dead" last year after watching the AMC series and was surprised at how good the graphic novel was. Unfortunately this second collection isn't as good, but it still a hugely entertaining read that's hard to put down.

In Book 2, the survivors have found an abandoned prison and decide to make a new life for themselves. Protected by the prison walls from the hordes of un...more

Lots more character development in Book Two, and definately more of a page turner than it's predecessor. The survivors have found home in a massive prison, and they're trying to clean it out, and form the beginnings of some sort of makeshift society.

What I like best about this one (and it's hard to explain without revealing spoilers) is that it's starting to take readers down a darker path, a path that they don't necessarily want to go down. The characters are beginning to unveil their true side...more

I like post-apocalyptic stories, but zombies just aren't my thing. Zombies are lazy post-apocalyptic writing, I would say, like you even need zombies when people, especially at the end of the world, are much more scary. I've never watched the TV show either. (I've seen enough zombie movies.) That said, I'd heard the comic is even better than the critically-acclaimed TV show that people can't just shut up about so I figured I'd check it out from the library. It's a big book, probably 250+ pages I...more

I'm pretty sure there is more to life than sex but you wouldn't know it after reading this. I cannot stand that everyone is coupled up all the time. There is so much more going on beyond that. It is amazing that Kirkman can make me hate almost every single one of his female characters. They are weak, whiny, whores (i say whores because sex seems to be the only thing they think about) They just want to be protected?! They don't want to be part of the committee?! they just want the men to make all...more

I didn't like this one as much as the first hardcover. I think it does a good job of portraying what this type of zombie apocalypse would do to one's sanity though, and how different people would react to this new messed-up world. Lori and Rick started to really annoy me (she is constantly screaming and bitching about everything; he's always running around doing whatever he wants without thinking about the consequences at all), so I was really happy that several new characters were brought in to...more

This story takes place almost entirely in the confines of an abandoned prison out side of Atlanta, and while there are still a few walker related incidents, it's the survivors actions that are the main plot driver in this volume. Again I have to admit I'm biased by the TV series which I have enjoyed for two seasons but the plots are different enough to make them two different stories, but I didn't enjoy this second volume as much as the first or the TV show. The motivations of the characters are...more

The continuing story by Robert Kirkman about humanity's survival in a world populated by "walkers" or zombies to the lay man. The thing I really like about this series is that nothing is taken for granted. You literally have no idea from sequence to sequence just what is going to happen in terms of relationships, interactions, and most important who lives and who dies. The book is less and less about zombies and more and more about people getting along and maintaining their sanity in an insane...more

I like the cold realism and i think that this would indeed be the way things would go after a great apocalypse. At times it can be a little too much though. People who really want to survive will try to maintain some stability and not constantly try to murder each other. It's pretty clear that when i have a strong guy in my group, who is not particularly a pain in the ass, a good shooter and strong, i will rely upon his existance for survival.
Sometimes the women act very stupidly in a not very...more
