I have to admit I amazed that some how in my adolesence of female oriented fantasy reading I never picked up the Alanna Quartet. The series is most definately unique in the world of fantasy directed to girls;the sex is frank, the main character has the unique attributes of red hair and violet eyes but is at one point described as short and stocky, she works to callous her hands, and has chosen the road that will most definatly at the end of ...more

Fourth in the Song of the Lioness children's adventure series revolving around the Lady Alanna, a knight in the service of King Roald of Tortall.

My Take

I wasn't as happy with this particular installment as it seemed a bit condescending in parts. Although, that is my only quibble. I also suspect that part of my dislike is because there were too many deaths of characters I liked.

It is never clear to me what the villain's true goal was. Was he trying to become a god?
I don't think I've mentioned this is any of the other reviews, but I always wish we learned more about Thom's character. Even though he is Alanna's twin, his character is always portrayed as not having many likable qualities. Although he serves as a vehicle for the villain's power, Thom unfortunately lacks depth.

I kept re-reading the last few chapters after finishing this, thinking I'd missed something. Even now, reading all the rave reviews, and knowing how well this series has been loved for so many years, I'm pretty sure something flew past my head. What exactly was the evil villain's point in attempting to destroy Tortall? Was he hoping to gain enough power to challenge the gods in the afterlife? Why was the secondary villain so willing to go along with him, knowing death was his only goal?

It's not often I'd criticize something for being too realistic, but as this series developed, it had a very odd split personality. On the one hand, it's a nicely-done but fairly generic swords and sorcery young adult novel, with evil dukes, magic spells, and mountain gods. On the other hand, Alanna's romantic life is just as messy and complex as in a modern high school novel, with odd stops and starts and relationships that just kind of start up and/or peter out. I have no problem with those ...more
I enjoyed this more than the previous book but only because of the more variative setting. I've come to realize that romance just isn't something handled particularly well in this series, and it may just be an afterthought. It's become clear that not only relationship beginnings that are abrupt (I remember talking about this about the first book, how Alanna and Jon just suddenly started sleeping together), but the endings are too. With the exception of the breakup with Liam, all the others just ...more
Of the Lioness Quartet this is my favorite. I think it might be my favorite book of all time. I have almost the whole thing memorized, actually the whole series. I read these books while I was still in elementary school and I can tell you anything about any of the characters today. I almost didn't read this one because I didn't want Alanna to be without Geroge and John and all the other characters I fell in love with.

Yep, I just re-read all of these books for the first time since I was 12. Damn you, Kindle!
I enjoyed them the second time around-- not as much as I did when I was 12 and feisty and just beginning to understand that being a teenager meant wanting to fight EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME. Alanna was a pretty great outlet for that.

Lioness Rampant is the fourth book in the 'Song of the Lioness Quartet' and as many of you know my last three reviews have been the other three installments in this series. Whenever I reread this series I still find myself riveted until the end. This is one of my favorites of the four books and I feel that it is a great addition. Many people who have completed the novel have had different feelings about the ending which I will not reveal. I am neutral on that point. I feel that Tamora did an exc...more
Upon receiving this last book in Tamora Pierce's fabulous Song of the Lioness quartet, I must admit I was worried. Okay, not truly worried, but nervous that Pierce wouldn't be able to address my many questions and thoughts properly in this last book. Then I noticed the book was over 400 pages and I knew Pierce had given herself plenty of space to discuss each facet of Alanna's story in the detail it deserved. I was not disappointed - shame on me for even doubting.

Red hair and purple eyes have never looked so good. Sir Alanna of Trebond becomes the first woman knight of Tortall, making her beauty and power known to all. This book is the last in a series of four, traveling from page training all the way to knighthood. Alanna is a strong female character that is easily relatable to young women, but is perhaps a bit sexually progressive for the period. She is gifted with an ember from the mother goddess that protects her from pregnancy, resulting in a slew o...more
It's kind of impossible for me to describe the impact Alanna had on me as a young girl. She taught me that people will most often find your paralysing rage "cute" rather than intimidating, and she sparked a lifelong desire to have a talking cat with purple eyes. I generally consider the Immortals quartet as my favourite but Alanna definitely had the most impact on me. I re-read either this or the Immortals probably once a year and if I ever have a daughter this will be required reading...more

Lioness Rampant is the last book in the Song of the Lioness series. How sad that there are no more Alanna's books for me to read, specially when it didn't end they way I wanted. Although, I understand the reasons behind this ending. Also, I do think the way it ended is more accurate with the story and makes more sense than my own version of a happy ending.

OMG I LOVED LOVED LOVED these books. The final book in Tamora Pierce's Songs of the Lioness series was everything I wanted it to be and SO much more. The books just keep getting better and better as the series progresses. I loved every second of it. I laughed out loud, I wanted to cry, but didn't shed a tear. It was in a word... PERFECTION! I'm not saying the book in itself was perfection, but it truly was the perfect way to end the series.

There are things I really liked about this book. There had been plenty of foreshadowing about Thom causing problems with his magical power and lack of knowledge of anything else, and the thing he did took me by surprise and was interesting. Good "go big" fun plot point. Meeting Thayet and some of the action in the war-torn place is good too.
Negatives:

In a Nutshell: Following the ending of the last book, Alanna has set on a quest to find the Dominion Jewel - in order to bring glory to Tortall and prove her worth as a knight. However, she has to wade through a war-torn country, including Tortall and things get more complicated when someone she believed to be long gone has been risen from the dead.

After three awesome installments, I come to the last part of the quartet. Firstly, I really want to express how much I liked this series-ender. No cliffhangers, no detail left to wonder about, no frustrations. Then, I absolutely agree with the author for picking George as her betrothed. I really adored George even from the start. I knew he was special the first time he was mentioned in the Alanna, The First Adventure.

Sir Alanna of Trebond is the only female knight in the entire realm of Tortall. Restless after finally winning her shield, Alanna sets out to find the Dominion Jewel, a legendary magic stone with limitless power.
On her way there she meets the Shang Dragon, Liam Ironarm. She is offset by his way with her, but is still quite attracted to him. Liam decides to go with Alanna and Coram on their quest, and they begin an affair.

This book is the fourth in the Alanna series, and some say the best. I don't agree (even though I haven't finished the book) I LOVE this book, but she faces to many problems with love and weather she should settle down and stuff. I liked it when she was learning with the boys and keeping her secret with her and her hidden love, Johnathan. But I still love the book!!! don't get me wrong. It's SO COOL!
This one was my favorite of the quartet, I think. Probably because all the characters are so much more mature and well fleshed by this point in the books. Alanna does lose a bit of her fervor, but only a bit. It's nearly impossible to be truly gung-ho on something and thoughtful at the same time, so it wasn't too bad a trade-off.

After adoring the first, liking the second and hating the third, the fourth came somewhere in-between. I hated how it started, sleeping with a total of three men throughout the course of her four books did not please me one bit, especially because the third is a man she doesn't even know at all. It felt so unreal and stupid and just altogether frustrating. The first half of this book was a bit of struggle for me, but honestly once the adventure for the jewel was over, the story picks up quite a ...more
I'd never noticed it before, but on this reread of the quartet, I realized that this is actually the weakest of the lot. Tamora Pierce tries too much in this book, with 4 different plotlines being twisted together. Because of this, it's by far the longest of the four. It doesn't make it bad though, just means it's not as tightly spun as the other three.

This is the fourth and concluding book in the Song of the Lioness series, and it really doesn't make a lot of sense or have much emotional impact if you read it without having read the previous three books, so I would recommend against that.
Alanna of Trebond is a knight, and has defeated her worst enemy in single combat. She's still a bit worried about using her magic because of the way the battle went, and things are somewhat awkward between her and Prince Jonathan, so she sets off...more

This is the last book in the Song of the Lioness series. Once I got to Portland, I decided to just check them all out and get it over with. They are all good teen pulp fiction, and when you are trying to get young folks to read, stories for the popular audience are not a bad place to start. This series was more than satisfying, a good find for me to buy at least one, maybe two books. The final book was of a piece with the rest, my only complaint being that the ending is too neat and predictable....more
These books are so short I decided to save my review for the end of the series. This story was so fun. I needed a nice easy, fun, adventure story and that's what I got. To sum up the feel of it I would say it's a combination of "Graceling" and the story of Joan of Arc. I loved the integrity and goodness of the main character Alanna. She doesn't realize her destiny is so great, she's just out to be a good person and ends up saving various people around her in each book. I probably didn'...more

First of all, though I would love to join groups, I'm going to turn them all down. I just don't have the time to take part, so please don't be offended if I don't join your group or accept an invitation. I'm not snooty--I'm just up to my eyeballs in work and appearances!
