WARNING: HERE THERE BE SPOILERS

The Realm of the Gods, final book in Tamora Pierce's The Immortals quartet, is a book that honestly cannot be enjoyed unless you enjoyed the novels previous. Over the course of the first three books, the characters and the world grow on you to the point that they feel like imaginary friends (good thing or bad thing, I know not). Even then, however, this ending is a bit of a disappointment simply because it's the e More...

This wasn't supposed to be the next book I finished. I was planning to get through Eulalia! first, but I woke up one morning and rolled over and grabbed this one for no good reason except it's easier to read paperbacks than hardbacks when you're lying on your side because you don't want to get up, and also because your cat is sitting on your hip.

Anyhow. That was yesterday. I think I read five chapters or so before breakfast. And then I had to face the truth: I'm addicted to these More...

I love Pierce, and even though none of her books will be better than the first series (Alana: The First Adventure) about a girl who disguises herself as a boy to become a squire (and eventually, a lady knight: the first such in many hundreds of years in her world of Tortall) I also really like this series. Well, I liked the first book in the series enough to give it, say, a 4. The second book wasn't that great. The third was a little better. This was a nice low-point to finish the series. La More...

Fourth and last in the Immortals fantasy adventure series for children revolving around Daine, a wielder of the wild magic.

If you like to read an author's series in order, start with Alanna: The First Adventure in the Song of the Lioness series.

My Take

Oh, I do adore Tamora Pierce's stories! Great characters with fantastic adventures that emphasize kindness and consideration for others.

In this installment, the war is pressing hard on More...

If I could give half-star ratings, I'd probably give this more like 4.5 stars rather than just 4. Overall, the quality of this quartet is much higher than the "Song of the Lioness" quartet, but the ending battle just wasn't as epic as that from "Emperor Mage". The story seemed to meander a little, probably due to the journey through the Divine Realms.

Despite this, there were some definite highlights to enjoy. The darkings are adorable little characters. As they deve More...

This book takes Diane out of the human world entirely and into the logical conclusion out into well the realm of the gods. After this point in the series, the events of the previous books, though still relevant, seemed distant and not really to matter as much as they did before. This may or may not work depending on the view of the reader. If a natural progression of every-increasing scale is what a reader expects as a story begins to close in on its conclusion, then this book will likely play i More...

This is the final book in the Immortals quartet. It features Daine, a teenage girl with wild magic. She is able to heal, communicate with and transform into various animals. She has a strong sense of right and wrong and always considers the implications for her friends in her actions. In this novel, there is an outbreak of war and chaos. The former Emperor Ozorne, now turned Stormwing, has taken control of a large tribe of Stormwing's and is conspiring with Tortall's enemies to destroy the land. More...

In the final book in the Immortals Quartet Daine and Numair get sucked into the Realms of the Gods in the middle of the war between Tortall and her enemies. Desperate to get back the two travel through the Realms with the help of the Badger and Duckmole (Platypus) gods. Although being stuck in the Immortal Realms seems somewhat inconvenient it turns out to be crucial if the Tortallians are going to win the final battle.

Emperor Mage remains my favorite book in the series. I love More...

The fourth and final book in Pierce's The Immortals fantasy series, following Emperor Mage (1995), proves a fitting conclusion. The evil Stormwing, formerly Emperor Ozorne of Carthak, and Uusoae, the Queen of Chaos, are in cahoots--the Stormwing wreaking havoc on mortal lands and Uusoae on the realms of the gods. Although gods pull Daine and the mage Numair into the realms to save their lives, the two feel they must return to earth, where they are needed in the desperate battle raging there. Aft More...

It's been a year since wild mage Daine, now sixteen, helped topple Emperor Orzone of Carthak, but at that time his consciousness was trapped within the body of an immortal flesh-eating bird known as a stormwing, and therefore his presence is still integral to the story. In fact, Orzone has teamed up with Uusoae, the goddess of chaos, and together their power threatens to destroy everything Daine knows and loves.

I'm going to have to agree with other reviewers - I think this was the weakest in the series. In this book Daine and Numair are taken to the Immortal Realms, where she finds out that her mother is now a goddess and her father was Weiryn, god of the hunt. She and Numair spend most of the book trying to get back to help the people in Tortall who are under attack from Immortals. The book felt like a lot of discussion about whether or not they'd go, followed by a skimmed through journey and a fin More...

I really liked this one for the kind of quest setup that it had; quests are always fun. And the grand battle at the end was much more nail-biting than any of the fights of previous books, in this series or the Alanna series. I feel rather bad for the amount of Grand Battles that Tortall has experienced during the rein of King Jonathan.

Two things that rather bothered me in this book: (1) The Lioness was conspicuous by her absence here; given that she's the King's Champion, I expected More...

I’ve been sitting on this one for a while. It’s a perfectly lovely ending for a great fantasy series; it’s just that I don’t have too many strong feelings about it. Whereas the ending of the Alanna series felt so relevant to my own life, this one doesn’t resonate as much. Daine’s lessons are important ones: embracing adulthood and independence and saying goodbye to the past. They’re just not lessons that I’ve had to deal with recently. I feel like I am too old for this More...

Showdown between Mortals and the Immortals

Daine and Numair have been doing their best, fighting against the forces of the now Immortal, Ozorne. In a battle at the cusp of death, they are spirited away to the Realms of the Gods by Daine's mother, Sarra, and her father, both of whom are gods. But Daine can think of only one thing: fighting in the battle in Tortall and saving her friends. Numair and Daine must then journey to the Land of the Dragons to return to Tortall and hopefully More...

In this the final installment of the Immortals series Diane spends most of the book in the divine realms after being saved from certain death by her parents who are both gods. Apparently the Greater Gods decided they didn't have enough gods in their panthenon so they decided to make Diane's mother Sarra into the Green Lady, a goddess of midwifery only known it seems by people in the village where she lived. Wouldn't that make a great High School reunion story, "Uh, yeah, so you know I dat More...

This book if brilliant! You are taken on this amazing adventure where your heart is so filled with emotions you feel it is about to burst. You meet many new characters and grow to love almost every one, though there might be a few that will have the opposite effect. (i.e. bad guys!) It is so completely amazing. I love this book and each time I read it I end up just finishing it even faster with how excited I get wanting to know what will happen next… even if technically I already know. You even More...

well, i remembered why i thought these books were boring.

i think the different format / different focus is what made me love these so much less than the rest of the tortall books. in the alanna and kel books, we literally see them grow up. it's not just about the battles and the monsters and their powers, it's about how they make friends and how they learn to be okay with who and what they are. after the first book though, we don't really see daine making many friends or interacting More...

Definitely the weakest book in the quartet. The romance in this series just didn't build as nicely as all the romantic relationships in the Alanna series and I felt like it happened because it was supposed to and didn't really feel anything for the relationship. And for those of you who know me, you know I like to "ship" characters all over the place.

I felt like the journey scenes were kind of bleh, and Daine did most of her character growth in the other books so there wasn't More...

Another book which sucked me right in, courtesy of Tamora Pierce. I really enjoyed revisiting old friends (Daine, Numair, etc.) and meeting some new ones, and I thought this fourth book wrapped things up nicely (in a way that always leaves room for more, IF she should want to add it).

I really do respect the relationship choices Tamora Pierce writes for her characters. The girls are strong young women who are (or at least become) comfortable in their own skin, and the books aren't wrapp More...

This is a satisfying end to the Immortals Quartet. It feels like it moves at a slower pace than the others, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It does a good job of tying together all the plot lines from the earlier books as well as introducing some new ones. As always in this series, it's the interaction between Daine and Numair that draws me into the book, as well as the colourful secondary characters.

I think Emperor Mage is still my favourite of the quartet, but this one More...

A satisfying conclusion to the Immortals series. I would have given it a higher rating except for one big, to me, issue. I am not giving anything away as A) it was referred to in a blurb on the back of the paperback edition I read and B) you've seen it coming in the past 3 books, namely the Daine/Numair "romance."

I realize that I am potentially projecting current perspectives onto a work of fiction, much less one set in a world similar to our past, however I have a real More...

After finishing this book, I knew I was going to miss Daine and all of her People. This was an excellent series that champions the notion that young women can be as powerful and influential as they choose to be. In this last book, Daine matures into the young woman she has shown promise for in the previous books. She finally finds out who her father is, learns to negotiate with the dragons, battles for her nation's survival and falls in love. I loved the humor that Pierce brings to her books More...

It was okay. I liked it well enough. Nothing special; although I do like Ganiel the Dreamer for some reason (not sure why). I'm also kind of upset that many of the characters that I loved in the first book just seemed to disappear. However I won't hold that against Pierce since many adventure stories like this focus on mostly only the protagonists. I don't think Diane got any more Mary-Sueish in this book (since I think the fact that her father is a god was revealed in the last book that just pu More...

This was an odd ending to the series. I was expecting a final battle on Earth and ended up getting a journey home from the land of the gods. It was sort of frustrating, although not necessarily in a bad way. I am glad to have met Daine's parents.

A good wrap up to the series and a fair amount more violent and sexy than I remembered, this is probably my least favorite of Pierce's books. I still liked it, but I don't have the same connection to the characters that I do with some of the other series and the age difference with Daine and Numair ends up playing just a little icky because she's still so young (I know 16 in a medieval/renaissance world isn't that young, but it still feels young to me) plus they had the student/teacher thing goi More...

nor an ordinary fantasy with it's vast range of imaginary creatures. Nevertheless it is filled with adventure, friendship, excitement and whirwind of emotions.
