From the Book

It is a lie to say we were farmers.
Great granddad worked the mines,
had a garden patch, raised chickens,
did odd jobs to keep us fed.

Granddad built the store and when his
generosity and the new road caused it
to close he worked the shoe factories
and kept the garden patch.

A small piece of hillside ground
with pole beans, tomatoes, potatoes,
everyday fare.

Just enough food from the earth to go
with the cheese and other goods we
got once a month from the government.
