The Perils of Pursuing a Prince (Desperate Debutantes #2)
by
Julia London (Goodreads Author)
Second in Desperate Debutantes trilogy, Lady Greer Fairchild hopes to avoid guardian Lord Downey's plan of marriage to the first bidder by seeking her distant inheritance, controlled by Rhodrick Glendower, Earl of Radnor, Prince of Powys. Overly helpful Mr Percy reinforces rumor that the prince is rough, ruthless -- even a murderer. But Greer never imagines the brute would...more

I'm huge fan of Beauty and the Beast tales, and this one was a perfect example of this theme. Adding to the fact that Julia London is a favorite author of mine, it isn't a surprise that I ended loving this.

Book 2 in Julia London's Desperate Debutantes series.
I found this review on Amazon and thought it was particularly good:
"Greer arrives in Wales thinking she is finally about to locate her much-needed inheritance only to find that instead her money has been given away to Rhodrick Glendower, Earl of Radnor and the Prince of Powys. Greer's traveling companion, Owen Percy, who claims Rhodrick has also stolen his inheritance, convinces Greer to accompany him to the Prince of Powys' estate, where they...more

This is actually a Welsh historical as opposed to English. Set in the 1820s, Greer Fairchild is stuck at the remote Welsh home of Rhodrick Glendower, known as The Prince. He's uncertain if she's come to defraud him or truely belongs but soon doesn't want to let her go, and Greer finds herself fascinated with Wales and with Rhordrick.

I have to agree with the reviewer who called Greer, the heroine, a "ninnyhammer." She was a most irritating, annoying character, who was so naive and insistent on her own misguided assumptions that she bordered on TSTL. This is the second book in a trilogy, about Greer, and her two cousins (who are sisters). In the first book of the trilogy, Greer is considered the smartest of the three, and is sought out at society events as a partner at cards and games because she is such a good strategist. We...more
This is the tale of a very naive ninnyhammer who travels from London to Wales to demand her inheritance from an uncle who received the inheritance from her father, who had no male heirs. That uncle is now dead and the inheritance has been transferred to the man known locally as the Prince of Powys. The Prince is also the uncle of the man with whom Phoebe, the ninnyhammer, traveled alone for the last part of her trip (her female companion had died mysteriously shortly after Percy joined them), in...more
Redonk Nutshell: Naive down-on-her-luck heroine is stuck staying at the Earl of Radnor's Gothic Wales home & becomes entranced by his haunted yet tender nature
I have and will always be a fan of Gothic fiction. Something about dark castles, haunted heroes and ridiculous heroines always manages to bring a smile to my face. It makes me feel like...well, autumn. Like cracking the windows on a windy brisk day, climbing beneath a blanket with a good enthralling Gothic book and a cup of tea. Heaven...more

Julia London is a great storyteller. Enjoyed the unique setting of this book as it takes place in Wales in an old castle. I have ready many historical romances but very few with a Welsh flavor. A little experience of the Welsh language even. It perked my interest in the history of Wales itself. The romance is rather unique also in that the hero is not your typical handsome, sure-of-himself, dashing gentleman. That's not to say his personality isn't "Big" because he certainly dominates the story....more
Greer Fairchild has journeyed to the remote Welsh countryside to seek out the Prince of Powys in the hopes of finding out some remnants of an inheritance that she can claim. It trying to escape her step-uncle's mandates to control her, and her cousins futures, Greer wants to try and stand on her own without a man guiding her life.

Recently, an unknown someone dumped a bunch of “bodice rippers” on the back counter at work with a sign “free books”. Not being one to pass up free books, I looked through the stack and grabbed a bunch. I’m definitely still stuck on a never-ending YA kick, but these make a nice diversion. And some are definitely better than others. This one was okay. Greer sets off to discover if she can claim any of her deceased father’s inheritance (since he fathered no sons). Instead she discovers a hermit (o...more

OMG...I hated Owen Percy's presence in this book with a passion. I kept thinking "Ok, when's this jerk gonna get written out?!"
I got the sense of Jane Eyre or something whilst reading it. I think it's because of the dark and stormy setting it's taking place in. The characters are nothing like it, although there is some Beast in Mr Rochester from Jane Eyre, and a lot of beast in Rhodrick. Where Jane Eyre is a frumpy field mouse, Greer is a brunette beauty, I guess.

Thoroughly enjoyed, 38 year old hero who has love and lost, and due to a riding accident in his late teens, had a facial scar and limps. Not handsome by any stretch, but I defy you not to fall for this Welsh prince who is walking virility and who smolders right down to his toes. Radnor has to put up with a lot, haunting memories, an annoying family, a silly 22 yr old heroine who acts in turn childish and churlish. But the beauty and the beast aspects works, despite how annoyin...more

The second book in the desperate debutantes series. Although I don't agree with the 'debutante' title as the girls are in their early twenties and could be considered 'on the shelf'. Miss Greer Fairchild is mentioned in the first book The Hazards of Hunting a Duke as she is already on her journey to Wales to find her inheritance and her long lost past and there are mentions of her letters. We start off with her finally arriving at Llanmair, Wales to the residence of Earl of Radnor who has taken...more
The sluggish preamble drags out how naive Greer jounces badly in stagecoaches cross-country until sudden passing of touring employer cantankerous Mrs Smithington, is taken in hand by obviously yucky overly-helpful Mr Percy who controls too much. As soon as the lawyer names heir for both estates the beloved Welsh Prince of Powys, I remembered who was the good guy, and who framed him for murder and embezzlement. So disliked, no review in my records, found comment and read no further, remembered to...more
This novel is very much a combination of Beauty and the Beast, Pride and Prejudice with a smattering of Jane Eyre. A couple are forced to endure each other in essentially a castle, where she's forced to join him for dinner (much like the Disney classic), they constantly misunderstand each other and there's a mysterious past involving a mad woman locked up.

When I first started this book the 2nd book of the Debutante series I thought it was a flop!!! But than I keep reading out of my loyalty to Julia London and all of the other great books she has written. I being to realize that these characters such as Greer was frustrating me so much that I could have gone in the book and slapped her silly and say to her wake up you stupid fool!!! That's when I realized I was reading a story and not really their! When a author can evoke this kind of emotion from...more
This book had a noticeable Beauty and the Beast plot, which could have been a refreshing change, but that is a difficult theme to manage in any time period. The damaged hero came across very well, but we didn't get much of his POV to keep him from feeling flat and/or crazy for his interest in her. Instead, we got too much heroine POV, so her belabored desperation and indecision quickly led the reader to assume she was an idiot.
Julia London is also a new author to me. I enjoyed this book about Lady Greer Fairchild and her pursuit of her inheritance. Rhodrick Glendower, Earl of Radnor, seemed as brooding as Heathcliff but Greer knew instinctively what to do. Greer, of course, has to defy his edict not to go to Kendrick but she realizes it was the home of her mother and can't resist. The prince is not happy but they do manage to communicate!
This was my first Julia London book and it was pretty good.
The only thing that bothered me was the main characters constant reference to "Oh I wish my friends were here, they would know what I should do." It got old after the 2,3,4th times.
I'm picking up the others in this series to see how they fare... we'll see!

Beauty and the Beast story. Greer is irritatingly indecisive and passive. She certainly tolerates a fair bit of physical attention from males around her, while she ponders whether to consider their suits or not. Outrageous in those days. I normally adore Julia London's books but this one is not quite up to her usual standard.
I really, really, really wanted to like this one.
The Prince wasn't perfect in his appearance and I found that pretty intriguing because as you know their usually always perfect knight and shining armors, but other than that his personality was as entertaining as watching paint dry (harsh I know). Greer (the main gal) just grated on my last nerve with all her so called innocence and naivety, I honestly couldn't stomach another page of her if I had too, and after spending the day trying to like th...more

It is like Beauty and the Beast. It was very romantic.
Greer Fairchild,is going to claim her rightful inheritance from the Prince of Powys. So she traveled from across London in search of her past and to claim her inheritance. But what she claimed was much greater than that, she found true love from an unexpected man.

This is another part of my 'Beauty and the Beast' theme binge.
It was a very pleasant read. Rather light story, although there are ghosts in it and a little bit of angst.
Throughout half the book heroine has a TSTL attitude, and I felt for hero's mistrust of her.
The big mistery could have been explained few chapters earlier.
4 stars for extra steamy sex scenes.

I had a blast reading this series, even though I read them out of order, there is a lot of humor and I love the characters, especially the hero, I do like them dark and brooding more.
