I'm huge fan of Beauty and the Beast tales, and this one was a perfect example of this theme. Adding to the fact that Julia London is a favorite author of mine, it isn't a surprise that I ended loving this.

Book 2 in Julia London's Desperate Debutantes series.
I found this review on Amazon and thought it was particularly good:
"Greer arrives in Wales thinking she is finally about to locate her much-needed inheritance only to find that instead her money has been given away to Rhodrick Glendower, Earl of Radnor and the Prince of Powys. This is actually a Welsh historical as opposed to English. Set in the 1820s, Greer Fairchild is stuck at the remote Welsh home of Rhodrick Glendower, known as The Prince. He's uncertain if she's come to defraud him or truely belongs but soon doesn't want to let her go, and Greer finds herself fascinated with Wales and with Rhordrick.

This is the tale of a very naive ninnyhammer who travels from London to Wales to demand her inheritance from an uncle who received the inheritance from her father, who had no male heirs. That uncle is now dead and the inheritance has been transferred to the man known locally as the Prince of Powys. The Prince is also the uncle of the man with whom Phoebe, the ninnyhammer, traveled alone for the last part of her trip (her female companion had died mysteriously shortly after Percy joined them), i...more
Redonk Nutshell: Naive down-on-her-luck heroine is stuck staying at the Earl of Radnor's Gothic Wales home & becomes entranced by his haunted yet tender nature
I have and will always be a fan of Gothic fiction. Something about dark castles, haunted heroes and ridiculous heroines always manages to bring a smile to my face. It makes me feel like...well, autumn. Like cracking the windows on a windy brisk day, climbing beneath a blanket with a good enthralling Gothic book and a cup of...more

Recently, an unknown someone dumped a bunch of “bodice rippers” on the back counter at work with a sign “free books”. Not being one to pass up free books, I looked through the stack and grabbed a bunch. I’m definitely still stuck on a never-ending YA kick, but these make a nice diversion. And some are definitely better than others. This one was okay. Greer sets off to discover if she can claim any of her deceased father’s inheritance (since he fathered no sons). Instead she discovers a her...more

OMG...I hated Owen Percy's presence in this book with a passion. I kept thinking "Ok, when's this jerk gonna get written out?!"
I got the sense of Jane Eyre or something whilst reading it. I think it's because of the dark and stormy setting it's taking place in. The characters are nothing like it, although there is some Beast in Mr Rochester from Jane Eyre, and a lot of beast in Rhodrick. Where Jane Eyre is a frumpy field mouse, Greer is a brunette beauty, I guess.

The second book in the desperate debutantes series. Although I don't agree with the 'debutante' title as the girls are in their early twenties and could be considered 'on the shelf'. Miss Greer Fairchild is mentioned in the first book The Hazards of Hunting a Duke as she is already on her journey to Wales to find her inheritance and her long lost past and there are mentions of her letters. We start off with her finally arriving at Llanmair, Wales to the residence of Earl of Radnor who has taken ...more
This book had a noticeable Beauty and the Beast plot, which could have been a refreshing change, but that is a difficult theme to manage in any time period. The damaged hero came across very well, but we didn't get much of his POV to keep him from feeling flat and/or crazy for his interest in her. Instead, we got too much heroine POV, so her belabored desperation and indecision quickly led the reader to assume she was an idiot.
This was my first Julia London book and it was pretty good.
The only thing that bothered me was the main characters constant reference to "Oh I wish my friends were here, they would know what I should do." It got old after the 2,3,4th times.
I'm picking up the others in this series to see how they fare... we'll see!

While I loved the setting - Scotland has been done to death so Wales is fascinating - the characters were annoying. I think a few more conversations would have helped things along, and the fact that they didn't have them made the characters seem none too bright. Still, loved the Welsh setting.
I really, really, really wanted to like this one.
The Prince wasn't perfect in his appearance and I found that pretty intriguing because as you know their usually always perfect knight and shining armors, but other than that his personality was as entertaining as watching paint dry (harsh I know). Greer (the main gal) just grated on my last nerve with all her so called innocence and naivety, I honestly couldn't stomach another page of her if I had too, and after spending the day tryi...more

Some promising bits, but all together it felt like a bunch of plot threads tangled together without care instead of a smoothly woven narrative. Hero and heroine not very likeable - in fact I'm not sure I'd like them at all if I weren't already invested in the series.
It is like Beauty and the Beast. It was very romantic.
Greer Fairchild,is going to claim her rightful inheritance from the Prince of Powys. So she traveled from across London in search of her past and to claim her inheritance. But what she claimed was much greater than that, she found true love from an unexpected man.

I thought the ending was a little rushed, but it made it feel like she will wrap everything up in the third book (I hope). I would have liked to see more interaction between the prince and her family though.
Heroine flirted with being TSTL (too stupid to live) in the beginning but thankfully improved. Entertaining Regency set Beauty and the Beast type tale with a touch of Jane Eyre. Kept me turning the pages.
Took my such a long time to read it. Might be the longest time I have taken to read a light weight romance book. But then again, when you're in your love, emotion turmoil, reading about somebody else's does seem a tad useless. About the book - it was good. Better than the first one in the trilogy.
I had a blast reading this series, even though I read them out of order, there is a lot of humor and I love the characters, especially the hero, I do like them dark and brooding more.
My favorite of the desperate debutantes series. Even though it was set in the regency era it had a mystical, medieval tone to it. The chemistry between them was great.
This book is an enjoyable escape read, although there are some moments where the character's actions are inexplicable, which I found annoying. Overall a nice escape read.
aduh si Greer ini beneran d.. habis sama Mr. Pierce trus sama Rhody.. kesannya kan jadi gimana gitu... tapi overall, bagus kok
The Perils of Pursuing a Prince (Desperate Debutantes, Book 2) by Julia London (2007)
This would have been so much better without the Wickham-esque Mr. Percy and the ghosts.
This book was excellent. I like that the heroine had a mind of her own and did not back down. I like that she was not afraid to speak her mind. I also like that Rhodrick was a Prince that had his own issues and was not the stud that all romance novels seem to have. He had two physical injuries and despite those Greer was still able to fall in love with him. I think this book was very witty and it had sex where it needed too but did not overwhelm the book. I think this is a keeper in my shelf fo...more
A fun book with some sad, dark moments. There were slow places where, I admit, I skipped pages to get to more interesting action. I have found that I have less and less patience with too much introspection when I want the characters to "just get on with it".

This book was a little slow getting into, but it sure made up for it at the end. "The Prince of Powys is a rough, ruthless---even a murderer. But Greer never imagined that the brute would refuse to let her leave his remote castle until she has proven her identity. The further Greer falls under his spell, the more determned she becomes to unravel the secrets of her Welsh heritage." Lady Greer is a lady after my own heart, she won't take NO for an answer.
2nd book in the Desperate Debutante series--how cheesy is that for a series title! Fortunately, the book reads better than that. Almost a beauty and the beast theme.
Great tension between the characters in this one. I didn't really follow the twists in the relationship, (view spoiler) but i still liked the story just fine.
#1 was better, should've quit there. Starts with bangup coach holdup. Dwindles into boring complicated catchup background. Lost interest. Skipped to the end. Greer and the Welsh Prince have the same dream so destiny brings them together. Too bad.
