I decided to give this book a try since Amazon listed Shadows Edge as 'new and newsworthy'. I noticed righy away that the premise was awfully similar to Christine Feehan's Dark Carpathian and leopard series but hey, I was hoping to stumble across a hidden gem, a diamond among tales, the next big thing, or at least a new favorite author.

I really enjoyed Geissenger's debut no...more "If they ever find you ... run" is a lesson her mother had repeated to Jenna over and over again, but when 'they' - the beautiful, graceful and dangerous shape shifting Ikati - do find her, Jenna decides to ignore her urge to flee in order to finally get the answers to the questions that have haunted her for her entire life. And that decision and those answers - and the sensual enthralling Leander who knows all of Jenna's secrets - will change Jenna forever.

I really enjoyed Geissenger's debut novel and Night Prowler series starter. It's not that the story itself is incredibly original but there is at times an almost lyrical quality to the writing that I found captivating. And I liked that Jenna who decides to go with Leander even though he is likely an enemy, doesn't immediately allow her hormones to overrule her distrust of him - which heightens the sensual tension between them - and I liked that it was her decision to hold herself back with silence and determination that drew out that tension instead of the more common device that many authors use of throwing in some external interruptions in to achieve the same result - that type of device which shifts the decision to 'fate' instead of 'choice' often makes me loose respect for the heroine. I am a shape shifter fan, so another thing that I really liked about the story was the way that Geissinger shows how different the Ikati's senses are from those of our mere mortal ones, my favorite scene involved wine tasting - which I know sounds odd - and was a very effective demonstration of that difference.

My only nits with the book were that the wrap-up of the story, especially in the last couple pages, kind of lost steam. However that nit didn't dim my enjoyment of Shadow's Edge so I will definitely read Morgan's book, Edge of Oblivion due out October of 2012, to find out what happens next in the world and I hope to get more of an interesting secondary character who definitely had my sympathy in this story - though, while Geissinger says that she has a book planned for Christian, it is not one of the next two currently in the works.

After finishing Shadow's Edge I am still not clear exactly about the UF/PNR balance of the series since, even though it lacks the first person voice of UF and Jenna and Leander's story seems fairly settled, there is still a lot to learn about the consequences of certain discoveries mean for Jenna. And while I am not sure what role the past pair will play in the future, I am hoping that the Night Prowlers ends up being one of those one-couple-per-book series that evolves into more of an ensemble effort as the overall arc of the series progresses.

Jenna is inconvenient and dangerous to the rich, powerful, and elite Ikati race. As the half-Blood with unknown abilities, Jenna could jeopardize their entire existence. They offer her a chance to prove herself as an ally or traitor, but with her freedom at stake, Jenna is only willing to go so far. Even if that means giving up on the chance to shed the loneliness and experience something more with the Alpha leader who has managed to get under her skin. Yet without trust and the constant threat against the Ikati and several against Jenna, exploring anything outside of the physical is too risky to her heart.

From the beginning, the reader is easily drawn into the Egyptology intro to the Ikati race. Thereafter, the story wastes no time in bringing Jenna's uniqueness to light and so begins her and the readers journey from normal everyday to the extraordinary unknown. Jenna is so much stronger than even she knows and a quite likable character despite her stubbornness. And while her full “Gifted” potential is still a bit unexplored, there was just enough revealed to keep the story moving quickly. The history of the Ikati is well drawn without being overwhelming nor is it front loaded on to the reader in the beginning. Instead, the author reveals relevant and interesting points, throughout the plotline. It all leaves just enough mystery for the next installment and I am very excited to see where it all leads as this race of shifters continues to evolve.

The conflict in the story is short lived in the action department as it leads to a bigger war brewing for future books in the series. Instead the focus is on Jenna and the building pressure of learning who and what she is and the conflict is more romance based. Leander is definitely worthy of the Alpha male title and manages to steal the show with his displays of affection both verbally and physically. Romance readers looking for a healthy dose of spice with great sexual tension will love how it is portrayed in this story. This author has definitely proven her worth in the romance genre by seamlessly blending paranormal and fantasy elements. I couldn't have been more impressed by this debut novel and absolutely plan on coming back for more.

Jenna was irrevocably marked by the sudden disappearance of her father when she was ten and the subsequent breakdown and early death of her mother. She is very much a loner and finds it difficult to trust or make a connection with anyone until she meets the rich and handsome, Leander McLoughlin with whom she feels immediately drawn to. She agrees to join Leander in England to learn more about the Ikati – her father’s people – and to discover why he disappeared from her life. Jenna’s life takes a sudden change following this fateful meeting, learning about her heritage, her powers and more importantly, what happened to her father.

Leander has an ulterior motive for wanting Jenna to join him as he believes she is his mate and very powerful despite only being a ‘halfling’. He wants to prove to her that she belongs with him and his pack in Sommerley. Leander is certain he can convince Jenna to learn to love him, and the Ikati, given time. Jenna has other plans and is resistant to falling for Leander as she intends to return to the States once she finds the answers to what happened to her father. However, nothing ever goes to plan and the answers Jenna is looking for lead her on a path she wasn’t expecting.

While the plot is not original with the beautiful, young woman discovering a hidden past, super powers and of course, a handsome mate, it is surprisingly readable. Geissinger creates a strong female character who is willing to take risks to learn the truth about where she comes from, and to learn why her father disappeared. Geissinger also doesn’t shy away from having bad things happen to nice people (her characters) but doesn’t fall into the trap that most urban fantasy writers do, where their female leads are constantly being attacked and beaten up. Geissinger manages to create a love story within a love story by opening the book with a letter from Jenna’s father to her mother telling her how much he loves her and apologising for having to make the ultimate sacrifice to keep Jenna from harm. Leander, however, is your fairly typical paranormal hero - extremely wealthy, powerful and an alpha of the Ikati. Despite him believing Jenna is his mate he doesn’t candy coat life for her and is even a tiny bit mean.

My main criticism of the plot however, is the lack of development of the secondary characters, Morgan and Christian. You learn very little about either character other than Morgan is a clothes horse and Christian is Leander’s brother. They are both under utilized but at the same time intrinsically involved in the plot. Their relationship with Jenna was superficial yet they were key in both Jenna and Leander’s relationship and in the main plot twist towards the end of the novel. It almost seemed that chapters were missing that would give this detail but I suspect that they will feature in future books of the series.

VERDICT:

I enjoyed SHADOW’S EDGE even though the plot was very similar to other books I have read. I liked the fact that Jenna wasn’t a push over and stood up for herself. Geissinger kept the plot moving forward without drowning it too heavily in the romance scenes between the two lead characters. There was the right balance between romance and suspense to make it suitable for people who like pure romance and those who like a little murder mystery to spice things up. SHADOW’S EDGE was a good start to the series and I am looking forward to Edge of Oblivion, which is due to be released later this year.(less)

I Loved Shadow's Edge and I already pre-ordered Edge of Oblivion, which is saying a lot for this newly published author. I really enjoyed the overall storylines so far and the since of humor, romance and tension along with the world building and character development is great. If I had one critique it would be, the book was too short and I was finished before I wanted to be. Things were just starting to go great and then the book was over. Just reading the summery of Shadow's Edge gave me a pretty good idea what to expect and enough information to know that I'd probably like it. Jenna is a strong if overly stubborn lead character with enough dept to her to be interesting but not overly unique or original. The introduction to her at the beginning of the book was interest sparking enough to get me reading further into the rest of the book, as I went on it became a bit more cliche but not so much so that I wanted to stop reading. Poor thing, never even had a chance :). He approached her, being sexy cat and all, with the attitude "Mine!" and "I will make you want me". I mean come on!

She never knew why her parents acted the way they did and now that her mother died and her father vanished, she finds herself alone for the first time. To add more confusion to her life, she is slowly learning that she has paranormal abilities.

The plot goes into full gear as readers learn about an ancient strict code of behavior enforced by the Ikati shapeshifters of England. The law states that whoever betrays it will be punished by death. The group learns that two traitors are living in California and have a daughter together. They send Leander McLoughlin to America to bring her to England to see if she can be educated with their customs, or more preferably by the tribe, kill her. But when Leander meets her, they are attracted to each other. But an unknown force within the shadows is determined to harm the two.

The first thing readers will notice about this book is that it is highly detailed. J.T. does a remarkable job of presenting such an intriguing society and provides rich and vivid descriptions of how they operate. There is so much action going on in every chapter. Whether it is tension between Leander and Jenna, with the villain, or within the Ikati themselves, the book promises to never lose grip of readers’ interest. To top it off, J.T.’s writing style is very poetic and has a magical way of drawing in her readers into this fantastical world she has built. She is skilled at giving so much life to the characters that readers will get a sensation of all the emotional feelings that Jenna goes through.

Readers are forewarned that this book will be glued to their hands once the first page is read and be prepared to be emotionally invested as it will touch on a range of emotions. Shadow’s Edge is a brilliant and spectacular story laced with some of the most compelling characters ever written. It will not disappoint…it will feed your need to want more.(less)

This author has set up an interesting world. The shifters are Ikati, hiding from humans. They have four colonies in different parts of the world each with it's own Alpha. We have begun with the Alpha Leander and his home is in Sommerely.

We see his world thru Jenna's eyes when she accompanies he, his brother Cristian and Morgan a female of the group. Jenna's father dissappeared when she was 10. Her mother drank herself to death some years later, but she had been taught when her father disappeared that she was different and that they had to keep moving.

Jenna lives alone and the moment has come that her mother warned her about. She feels electricity running thru her, looks up and locks eyes with 'him'.She hears her mother's words 'run' in her mind.

Jenna and Leander are 'fire and ice'. The humming, sexual, sensual dance is there between them. Her dreams have been of him. I notice other reviews here saying they did not like her, and I can see their point in a way. But I liked her. She met Leander as an equal from the moment they met. She wanted answers, the truth and he simpered sometimes to spare her and did cause some of the problems.

I daresay I will not spoil this story for anyone reading this review, just say I cannot wait to see what happens in Book 2 which I will plan on reading as soon as it appears to purchase

I really, really enjoyed this story! The mythology is unique and creative, and the characters are compelling. Leander is a devoted leader and more sentimental than I would’ve guessed. Jenna is intelligent and is stronger than she first appears. All the characters have such depth, you find yourself so invested that while you’re rooting for the hero and heroine, you want to cry for some of the secondary characters knowing what kind of toll everything is taking on them too.

Maybe some people like reading about the world of the rich and well off. I often do not.

The book paces well flipping right when needed into one of the two major character's perspectives. I appreciate this dualism a lot because it gives me a sense of the whole picture, both sides of the story as it were. Both sides of the romance as well. This book gets almost perilously steamy in its second half as our protagonists join. This brings me to the somewhat sad but also enjoyable fact that the writing can be descriptive to the point of laughability. I did not find this to be a bad thing, in fact, I think a well-rounded book could do with some humor too. I am just not sure it was intentional.

Of the two, Jenna receives far more development than her mate. This is not the best since both share the limelight and I would have preferred his story to be more complex than just seek and seize, love and conquer. This brings me to another point. The way the Ikati are structured could do with some jazzing up. I am hoping in the second book to see a real shake-up in their rather backwards organization. Leander's brother, Christian, could also do with some development. As well as Leander's sister, Doria, and the only powerful female in the group, Morgan. They are given portrayals so close to us that we may think that at first that they have enough screen time but definitely as the story shifts into the third act and romance starts to happen, they get the short end of the stick. In fact, the whole apocalyptic scenario that pervades this tryst feels unnecessary. It is hard to feel alarm for this crew as all powerful as they are.

With all these blemishes in mind, the book remains colorful and full of surprises. I have gone out of my way like the blurb does not to mention the powers or the history of the Ikati race because much of my interest derived from uncovering these mysteries and wondering where they would lead. Geissinger has certainly crafted an odd race of creatures. I am excited to see where she leads them next.(less)

So I think I wanted to like this more the I did.
Having said that I really like the idea and the writing for the most part was well done.

Now for what I didn't like:

-The looooong winded descriptions- they almost did me in! ...they were mostly of the settings...the woods, different houses, an airplane, etc...paragraphs and paragraphs of descriptions!
What's more was that, there was, IMO, a lack of world building...like we learn very little about the cookie cutter bad guys...and aspects of the itar...more

The romance was really well cultivated. I normally loathe the romance scenes in Paranormal/Urban Fantasy novels. Kudos to the author for not making me cringe or roll my eyes during scenes between Jenna and Leander.

However, the novel fell short with the female lead. I found Jenna's character to be obstinate and dim-witted. When other characters in the novel did or said something that carried glaringly obvious implications Jenna rarely acknowledge its significance until she was confronted with it...more

I am always leery when an author sends me an email asking if I will review their book. I am just not always sure if it is something that will fit in with my style and I do get some very strange requests at times. However, when J.T. approached me about Shadow’s Edge I read the summary and was very intrigued. It sounded like it fit in perfectly with the genres I love to read so I agreed to review it.

I am so glad I trusted my gut with this book, because it was awesome! It is a new take on shifters...more I am always leery when an author sends me an email asking if I will review their book. I am just not always sure if it is something that will fit in with my style and I do get some very strange requests at times. However, when J.T. approached me about Shadow’s Edge I read the summary and was very intrigued. It sounded like it fit in perfectly with the genres I love to read so I agreed to review it.

I am so glad I trusted my gut with this book, because it was awesome! It is a new take on shifters and the mythology was fascinating. The shifters in this world are called Ikati and have been around for centuries. They can shift, usually into some animal form, but have many other talents as well. Some of them can change into mist, others can use their powers of suggestion to persuade people to do something and the list continues from there. I liked the new twists added to the shifter mythology and enjoyed all of the information we were supplied about them.

Jenna was a great character, she has been alone so long though that she does not trust anyone. And while she does feel something right away for Leander, she does take the time to try to sort through those feelings and make sense of the new emotions pouring through her. She wants to trust him, but a lifetime of running has kept her guarding her heart. She did get in a couple of really clever jabs in on Leander and I love that she did not just fall into his arms without establishing her own boundaries first. Here is one example that I found highly amusing, Keep in mind I am just showing some of the scene not the whole thing. Leander has just ordered a very expensive wine from the place Jenna works in.

“Yes,” Jenna said acidly, “it suits you perfectly. The ’61 Latour is the ultimate penis wine.”….

“Really?” He said, controlled and calm. “How very amusing. Pray do enlighten me.”…

“I call them the penis wines,” Jenna replied, keeping the same tone of lightly contemptuous civility though her blood was boiling. She knew there would be hell to pay for this, knew her job was most likely kaput, but for the moment she could care less.

“They are the ridiculously expensive wines purchased as a show of masculinity by a certain species or men—excuse me, males—who have no real appreciation for their value but feel the pathetic need to display their tale feathers.”

Her small smile grew larger as his disappeared altogether. “I think a man secure in his masculinity would choose something a little more…substantial, shall we say. A little less showy.”

I mean come on? How could you not love a girl with a sharp tongue who calls it like it is?

Leander was someone I instantly liked. As the alpha, he has had to put others first and makes decisions based on what is good for the whole group. He is set in his ways, but Jenna is pushing his boundaries and making him question the world he has grown up in. He may be all alpha male, but he does respect Jenna’s wishes and tries to take things slow with her while acclimating her to his world and the idea of being with him.

The secondary characters stood out as well. Leander’s brother Christian tried to stay in the background, but his comments and actions leapt off the page whenever he appeared. He is the second son, so he has resigned to always being second best and I felt for him. I wanted someone to be there to comfort him. I am eager to get in his head at some point and hope we get a book from his point of view in the future. The other character I really enjoyed was Morgan. Being a woman within the Ikati society is not easy and she has made some tough choices because of how her life has played out. She was very upbeat when we first meet her and she had me laughing out loud at multiple points during the story. I am keeping fingers crossed that we get to see more of her as well.

Overall, I loved this book. We get a lot of information about the Ikati society and how it works, but got some great action in there as well. There is tension with the villain, between Leander and Jenna and within the Ikati themselves. The mythology is something we are familiar with, but it had just enough twists to keep it interesting and refreshing. I would highly recommend this book to any lover of paranormal romance. It is one I stayed up long past the time I should have gone to bed because I just had to know what was going to happen. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series!(less)

The cover for "Shadow's Edge" is just plain beautiful and the story is very good as well. J.T. Geissinger is a polished writer who shows a lot of style in the craftmanship of the characters, world building, plot and romance.

Geissinger is a polished writer who shows a lot of style in the craftmanship of the characters, world building, plot and romance.

Jenna has lived her life on the run for the most part. Her parents trained her at a very early age that if she was going to be able to protect herself, she needed to run. However, what they did not tell her is who she had to run from. Now that her parents are gone, she only has herself to rely on. While attempting to purchase a steak and a few other things from the grocery story, Jenna gets a feeling she cannot shake. She becomes ill; first with fever and then with fear. When she sees three leather clad strangers in the parking lot, she faints.

Jenna works as a sommelier at the Melisse restaurant in Los Angeles. One night a handsome and expensively dressed man comes into the restaurant and requests her services. Jenna is attracted and fearful of the guest when she realizes he is the stranger she saw from the parking lot. He is introduced as Earl Leander McLoughlin and orders the most expensive bottle of wine their restaurant carries. He invites her to sit down and sample the vino. Then, he requests that she describes in detail what she tastes. Leander is shocked at the accuracy of her palate. What she does not realize is that she was being tested to see if she had the hidden talents and traits the Ikati, Egyptian panther shape shifters who were almost hunted to extinction.

Jenna feels an earthquake in the city and immediately begins running. The next day, she shows up at the Four Season Hotel in Beverly Hills where Leander and his crew are residing. She wants answers and refuses to give up without finding them. Leander somewhat fills her in on her lineage and wants to take her back to Sommerley, England where she will learn of her people and her fate. Jenna wants nothing to do with the handsome stranger and is convince there are things he is keeping secret from her. She may very well be right and those secrets may be the end to the only world she has ever known including her freedom and will.

I really enjoyed the Egyptian backdrop for this story; but felt the author took it a little too far when she brought in the references to Cleopatria and Marie Antoinette. Also, there is a moment where Leander is professing his love for Jenna where he steal the line from Jack Nicholson "you make me want to be a better man." It was cheesy and not real creative. However, it did not take too much away from my enjoyment of the storyline. I cannot wait to see what the author has planned for the second book in the series. It has the promise to be really good. First, the plot in this book has been done before, and better.

Second, there's not much plot at all. If you take out all of the "Leander is staring at Jenna" and "Jenna admires everything about Leander", you will be left with about 30 pages. Ok, they are drawn to each other, they are both beautiful - we get it already!

The book was well developed and full of beautiful description. The author did a fantastic job creating sexual tension between the hero, Leander, and the heroine, Jenna. It was quite enjoyable to read the two of them dancing around each other.

It's said that fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Karen Marie Moning will love this novel and they're right. Although, I find it has more of a J.R Ward (The Black Dagger Brotherhood series) feel to it.

Their world is different than your usual paranormal world. They cut themselves off from our world all together. Living in a hidden town, almost like a fortress. Incased rough stone walls to keep unwanted beings out. Or themselves in, as Morgan would say) Humans are beneath the Ikati. No Ikati is allowed to procreate with a human, its against their law and is punishable by death.

Even though the punishment is so fierce for mating with a human, Jenna's father fell deeply in love with her mother. He regretted nothing, but he also paid the ultimate price. Jenna has been on the run for her whole life. Moving from place to place with her mother. After he mother dies when Jenna's only 18, she's left with only her mother's advice on how to live and hide on her own and that's exactly what she does. She relies on no one but herself, but she's lonely.

Leander is the Alpha of the Ikati. A character I won't soon forget.

Be he was larger, broad-shouldered and substantial, forbidding even with all that perfect symmetry of bone structure, that jawline seemed sharpened on a diamond cutter's lathe. Something about the mouth: sensual but hard, so hard it seemed he hadn't smiled in years. Or ever."

I loved Leander and Jenna's chemistry. Their banter was also fun to read. She's a strong willed woman who won't be told what to do, not even from an alpha.

One things I had mixed feelings for was Jenna and Christian's relationship. I feel bad for him. In some ways he reminds me of Phury,(The Black Dagger Brotherhood) having feelings for a woman who only has eyes for his brother. I look foward to reading more about him and for him to have his HEA. I'm not sure if she'll stick with the same protagonists or if she'll switch it up for Morgan or Christian. Either way, I'm looking forward to reading more.

As you can tell by my five star review, I highly recommend this novel. I was super glad to get a chance at reading an ARC and I look forward to what comes next in the Night Prowler series.(less)

I feel like I was duped by the cover and the description of this book. It should have been one of those "bodice-ripper" covers so I would have known that I was in store for some cliche paranormal romance. I couldn't finish this. I was looking for a pnr book and this one was recommended to me by amazon. It wasn't a bad book and it also wasn't a great book. I found this very similar to Christine Feehan's Leopard People series. A good, solid debut. I really enjoyed the world building and a new twist on the shape shifter trope. Jenna was a good, solid heroine. I enjoyed going along w/ her and learning about her heritage and new powers. I think that the author did a great job building her world and it was very believable and absorbing. Wow hands down a great read. This author writes very poetically. She has a way of elegantly and colorfully describing the scenes. She also does an excellent job of poetically describing what the characters are feeling.
