Another really good book. This was really cute. It talked about a witch (connotatively evil, though not explicitly told) who is hungry. The witch wants to make Piggie Pie, but lacks the pork to do so. Since she doesn't have the pigs for her recipe, she goes to the farm to get some piglets. However, the pigs have another plan (perhaps one to stay alive) They trick the witch and remain happy (and alive) on Old MacDonald's farm. I really like in this book how it uses the song "Old MacDonald" in the...more

A very contemporary-sounding Gritch the Witch sets out for Old MacDonald's Farm to get herself a meal of plump piggies. Alerted, however, by her skywritten "Surrender Piggies!," the swine hastily don sheep, cow, and other barnyard disguises and fool her with their good acting (moos, quacks, etc.) and poker-faced denials of any pigs in residence. The still-hungry Gritch is persuaded to give up by a Big Bad Wolf (he's been unsuccessfully chasing three pigs for days), and the two go off for lunch,...more

Once I saw the front cover of this book I instantly had a memory of reading it in elementary school. I want to say my teachers introduced it around Halloween time, which would only be appropriate. This story is about a witch named, Gritch the Witch who finds herself waking up one morning craving "Piggie Pie." She goes to a farm to find some pigs only to be tricked by their costumes and good acting. This book has great illustrations to go along with the story, but some may say that the witch coul...more

Those tricky piggies! In this story Gritch wants to make piggy pie, but she has no piggies! She goes to a farm looking for 8 piggies, but when she gets there are no piggies; they have all hidden as other animals, such as ducks and chickens. Finally, she gives up and meets a wolf who has been after those pigs for a while. Gritch has an idea and she invites the wolf over for lunch, and they walk home arm in arm. I could use this book to teach my students about coming up with backup plans, when the...more

I just didn't love this. I think kids would, and it'd be fun to read aloud. The ending is a zing, but not a big surprise. I was hoping for something more - Palatini's other 'fractured fairy tales' include a bit of social commentary stuff, have some significance, but I found none here.

The biggest problem I have, though, is the illustrations. Lively, good use of space, yes - but they have detail in them, and yet the detail is, um, smeary. It's like he's showing kids what it's like to need glasses!...more

I love this book! This book is about a Witch who wakes up one morning and decides she is craving some "Piggy Pie". She pays a visit to Old McDonald's Farm to find some pigs, but the pigs are ready for her. They trick her repeatedly until she gives up. She runs into a wolf who is willing to help her out. She has something else in mind for the wolf, as her tummy is still grumbling. Little does she know that the wolf has a plan brewing also. The students think it is so funny. I used it to teach han...more

sick, twisted, hysterical!

This is one of my favorite picture books. The vivid pictures add to the story of a witch who decides she wants to eat Piggie Pie. So she heads out to the farm to look for Pigs. Whenever she goes to look for pigs she finds different animals. What she doesn't know is that each of these animals are the pigs in disguise.

I used this book for an interactive read aloud where I dressed up as the witch and the students were the different animals that the pigs dressed up as. It was fun book to use with a...more

How could you not love a book about a witch looking for pigs to make pie and not being able to find them b/c the pigs outsmart her on MacDonald's farm?! The best part of this book is by far being able to use my scary witch voice whenever I read it and then using my sly wolf voice at the end when he talks the witch into going to his house for lunch...and both characters are pretty hungry by the end! By far one of my very very favorites! I used to read it every year on Read Across America Night to...more

My two nieces and I read this one all the time.

Gritch the Witch needs piggies to make the piggy pie she craves. But pigs are very clever animals (trufax!), and they quickly disguise themselves.

Every time Gritch asks one of the (disguised) animals where the pigs are, they hilariously quack quack, moo moo, and cluck cluck her all over the farm! Eventually she stops before the Old MacDonald, the man himself, for him to look look here, look look there, etc. and tell her the same as everybody else -...more

This book is about a witch named Gritch. She is hungry and want to make piggie pie. When she goes to the cupboard she finds all of the ingredients except for piggies. She looks in the phone book and finds a farm. She flies there and sees pigs, but when she lands she does not see any pigs. She looks everywhere, she finally runs into a wolf that has also been trying to find the pigs. The pigs have disguises of other animals to trick the wolf and witch. So the witch invites the wolf over for lunch...more

A which wants to make a pig pie but when she gets to a farm that is supposed to have pigs, she can't find any. Little does she know that the pigs are all dressed up as another animal or human.

Gritch the witch problem solves and decided to use wolf instead.

This is great for kindergarten- 2nd grade. It can teach the kids to problem solve for themselves or even how team work can help all that are involved.

When a witch named gritch gets hungry she decides to make piggie pie. She realizes that she has all the ingredients except for the piggies. She goes to the farm but doesn't see any pigs because they disguise themselves as other animals. They Disguise themselves to trick the witch and the wolf. It's just another twist to a story about pigs and how they outsmart the witch and the wolf.

A hungry witch in search of pigs goes to a farm, only to be met by a lumpy cow, odd looking birds, and a nearly-silent farmer. Where have all the pigs gone? And what does the wolf have to say about all this?

Unashamed of all the normal witch trappings, this book will delight more sophisticated picture book readers. Recommended especially for school aged kids, K-3.

A not-so-clever witch desperately wants to make her favourite dish, but must first locate some piggies to put in the pie. Sadly, she heads over to Old MacDonald's farm which is inhabited only by clever fairytale pigs who outwit her.

The twist at the end is amusing for older primary children but goes over the heads of most kindergarteners.

Great book! This book is about Gritch the Witch that gets hungry for some Piggie Pie. She visits Old McDonald's farm with the intention of getting some pigs. Very effective adjectives! Great for teaching about word choice! Full of expression! One of my favorite books because of the way that Mrs. Johnson read it--full of expression.

Gritch the witch wakes up hungry and craving for some piggie pie! There's just one problem-- she needs 8 piggies! In this hilarious tale, you'll encounter an evil witch, some clever piggies, Old Macdonald, and the big bad wolf. I would use this book to model crafting voice and crafting with words. Palatini uses a mix of different size fonts, all caps words, bolded words, etc., and the pictures truly add to the humorous reading experience.

This book is by far one of the best, most entertaining books I've ever bought and read to my children.

The storyline involves Gritch the Witch as she wakes up one morning wondering what she is going to eat for the day. "Piggie Pie" tops her list and she has all the nasty ingredients for the recipe except pigs. After flying down to Old MacDonald's farm to purchase some, the pigs pull a few interesting and fun loving stunts to preserve themselves.

Palatini's writing is classic and original as she...more

Oh, cute enough, I suppose. My niece checked this out and thought her brother would like it. Both kids giggled several times. I thought it was moderately clever, but found it a little annoying to read. Probably just me, though. My witch voice ended up being a little harsh on my throat, and she has a lot of lines!

This book is more for older children so that they can get the jokes that are within it, but it's a hilarious book about a witch who gets hungry and decides to go find some pigs for some piggy pie. Finding these pigs aren't as easy as she thought though, and the ending has an interesting twist!

Piggie Pie is a fabulous tale that is funny and just outright entertaining. Cross referencing/connecting of tales is one my very things and Piggie Pie mixes them up a few times. Be sure to really own the voice and demeanor of Gritch the Witch and your kids will love "Piggie Pie!" as much as I do.

You must read this book!!! It is so funny. I have read it to my kids they just laugh and laugh. I have read it at the school and the kids at the school just laugh and laugh. I am not sure it they are laughing at the book or me because of the voices I do with the book. We love this book.

We read this book on audio, which made a huge difference in the critique of this book. The witch on audio was FABULOUS! This silly witch wants to make a pig pie, but doesn't have any pigs. So she traveled to Old Macdonald's farm to catch little piggies. The kids loved reading this book.

Gritch the witch will stop at nothing to get eight plump piggies for a piggie pie. Too bad those piggies will not comply.
Absolutely one of my favorite children's stories of all time! My kids agree. We also like the other books written by Margie Palatini. Great author, great reads!

I love when a story takes phrases or plots from stories we are all familiar with and change it up so it's new and unique. This story is a wonderful example of that technique being well-done. The witch might be a bit scary for young readers, but the drawings are interesting.

I don't find the art very...attractive?...but there are some good details. More importantly, I love the ties to the "Old MacDonald had a farm" song and then to The Three Little Pigs. Definitely a story that requires both words and art to make sense.

suitable for kids over 3--this book is adorable and full of references to the three little pigs--that will make kids who know the story giggle. plus, with a little acting on the readers part, the book offers loads of opportunities for different voices.

Piggie Pie by:Margie Palatini, is a fantastic childrens book and the way it ends is just straight up funny!!!:) With the witch walking off hand in hand with the wolf each thinking of ways to eat each other! And how clever are those pigs!!!!!
Michelle Higgins
Piggie Pie can be used to teach reading with expression and punctuation. It also can be used in writing to teach onomatopoeia. The book also builds on the structure of Old MacDonald Had a Farm, which is a text most students are familiar with.

Absolutely loved this book! Gritch the witch flies to Old MacDonald's farm for some pigs to make a piggie pie but the clever pigs find a way to out-smart her. :) I think this would be a great book to read to a class! The kids would love it!
