Kids and parents alike will rejoice in this lively read-aloud picture book, as the main character runs into (and away from) a tiger over and over again as the plot gets sillier and sillier. Perfect for acting out while reading, It's a Tiger offers just the right amount of excitement without being too scary, and a sweet ending with a bit of a twist.

There is an art to reading a picture book but I've not encountered many schools that actually teach that skill. Librarians will learn it in their graduate courses, of course, but what about parents and booksellers? Are they doomed to stumble through their readings without getting some of the insider tips and tricks? Yup, pretty much. The only thing you can really do is just recommend to them picture books that make reading aloud one-on-one or to large groups a painless experience. Books that hav...more

I think this book by David LaRochelle and illustrated by Jeremy Tankard deserves to win the 2013 Caldecott Award. This book is a very fun and an exciting interactive book for children. The illustrations are great, they encompass the whole page and are very colorful and incorporate so many objects. The images stand out on the pages, easily catching the viewers attention. The storyline is fun and includes the reader as if they are a part of the story. The images go along great with the story and k...more

: IT’S A TIGER! by David LaRochelle and Jeremy Tankard, ill. Chronicle, July 2012, 36p., ISBN: 978-0-8118-6925-6

We made it!
Good thing we landed someplace soft.
A bed of flowers?
A pile of leaves?
A giant orange-and-black pillow?
No, we landed on top of…”

As a guy who reads children’s books as a guy, I have a love for what I’ve always referred to as gross motor books – books for young audiences that depict and/or lend themselves to large movements. There are limits to the number of stories for...more

It's a Tiger written by David LaRochelle and illustrated by Jeremy Tankard, is an adventure for preschool aged students. They are able to go on an adventure through the jungle but at every turn there is "A TIGER!". The storyline involves an adult or older reader to enthusiastically read and proctor the adventure to the younger audience. Every page is a new location and an opportunity for safety except for tail or stripe to give a hint that the tiger has beat the main character (a boy) and the au...more

This. Book. Is. Awesome.

We had to put a period after each word to let you know how awesome David LaRochelle's It's a Tiger! truly is.

First off, we got to say the word "Whomp." That right there is fun. More more fun is all the times we got to yell "IT'S A TIGER! RUN!" And, other than reading, there is nothing that Layla and Rachel love to do more than yell. Particularly yell "IT'S A TIGER! RUN!" And believe us, there are not many times in our lives where we get to yell that particular phrase.

So,...more

I always enjoy books in which the narrator directly addresses the reader, and this picture book does that all the way through. Young readers will enjoy this one because it includes them even on the first page. The narrator tries to begin a story, but before getting very far, becomes distracted by the sighting of a tiger. In some of the pages, just the tip of the tiger's tail is visible, and in others, the tiger is hiding in the dark. After going from place to place to avoid the tiger, the narrat...more

This is a fun read-aloud book in which the main character repeatedly runs away from a tiger (who doesn't appear to be attempting to cause him harm), only to find that the tiger is at the place that he's run to... a boat, a cave, an island. This is a fantastic read-aloud. You seriously cannot go wrong with this one. Just shout, "IT'S A TIGER!!!!!!!" when the time comes. I guess the repetition gets a little old at times, but the kids won't tire of it, and they'll get a big kick out of the twist at...more

I LOVED this one and am looking forward to using it for Story Time. It kind of reminds me of We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen because the kids get to do the actions along with the character in the book. This is so fun and has tons of possibilities for audience participation. The illustrations by Jeremy Tankard were rendered in ink and digital media, they are nice and bright and are sure to get even the wiggliest toddler's attention.

“Are you ready for a story? Me too” begins the young narrator. When he spots something mysterious up in the trees, he discovers it’s “A Tiger!” This is how the story goes as the boy is followed through various settings and obstacles by a tiger that he cannot seem to lose. This story is exciting and fast-paced and encourages reader interaction through the boy’s repetitious shouting of “A Tiger!” and “Run!” making it a perfect read-aloud or storytime book. The boy’s shouting is descriptive through...more

Hilarious! Some kids are going around and keep stumbling upon a TIGER! When they run away they come across the TIGER. It seems that they will never escape.

The bold lines and splashes of color preschoolers will enjoy finding the tiger before the kids in the book do. I LOVE this book, and can't wait until I can use it in storytime. I think a group of kids will enjoy shouting "TIGER" with me. And, when I love Looking for a Moose by Phyllis Root, how can I go wrong with this lovely gem?

ITS A TIGER!!!! An amazing picture book for primary audience. Wonderfully written and amazing illustrations. The story telling of a childs adventure in the jungle and encountering a TIGER at every turn. To only realize the TIGER is very friendly and wants to hear a story. I thought this book was extreamly cute with the bold lettering of the word TIGER on every page. It gave the reader a sense of excitement and it really pulled you into the story. The illustrations were very well done and went al...more

This is a short and entertaining book for parents to read with younger children. The narrative is repetitive and engages the reader, encouraging children to contribute to the story. And the illustrations are colorful, with bold, bright pictures. We loved finding the hidden tiger and we laughed at the ending.

The story is fun to read aloud and despite the fact that I knew the story was too 'baby-ish' for our girls, they allowed me to read it anyway. (I'm pretty sure they liked it as much as I did...more

Wow, this is fun! Bright, explosive, funny, and suspenseful -- I can just hear the giggles that would come from reading this out loud to a group. Jeremy Tankard's illustrations have soft backgrounds with ink outlines to bring the action to the front. I especially love how the tiger looks like a little kid might draw a tiger, making him less scary (he actually looks like Hobbes as seen by adults).

Another winner from Chronicle Books. "The illustrations in this book were rendered in ink and digita...more

Love the original artwork in this book. Very cool effect where the main "characters" such as the little boy and the tiger look as if they were done on oil paper and then inserted into the scenes. And maybe they were. I can't say I'm much of an art expert.

The story is a lot of fun too. The narrator uses a collective "we" to bring readers into the story, and it has a lot of the same cadence and suspense of the classic We're Going on a Bear Hunt. Would be good in a group setting with audience part...more

I purchased the digital version from Amazon for $1.99! Normally I would prefer the hardcover but I thought 2 bucks is a great deal.

There was one typo, but my reading experience was not ruined.

This book should be read OUT LOUD with your children. It's supposed to be fun!

This book did remind me of Bob Shea's Dinosaur vs BedTime but it definitely packed more punch, more content, more style!

Written in first person.
Boy is trying to tell a story, but a tiger appears. Throughout the story, the boy is trying to run away from the tiger, taking the reader on an adventure that comes full circle.
Interactive story in which readers try to find the tiger hidden in the illustrations.
A story in which the main character is talking to the reader.
Fun for preschoolers or kindergarteners.
Bold colors and stark lines gives this book a unique quality.

This story allows a child to imagine themselves in the jungle, finding a tiger at every turn, in increasingly unexpected places. The illustrations are colorful and adorable, and help build excitement as you read. It is a great book for reading aloud to preschool or kindergarten age kids. They can act out the story or join in announcing the tiger's presence. After reading the book, children can discuss how to react to surprising or frightening things.

I read some of the 5 and 4 stars reviews and maybe I just don't get why people would love this book. I guess it would be a good story time interactive book where you could have the kids predict what would happen next. I think this book needs to be read aloud to be fully appreciated. I read a lot of children's books and it was find but it didn't leave me super excited. I do like the artwork and I think kids will like it!

I'm goint to try this fun, interactive, read-aloud in preschool storytime. I think kids will love joining in the refrain, "it's a tiger!" and enjoy spotting where the tiger appears on each page.

The illustrations are bright and big and should carry to a large group. I love some of the more humorous illustrations, such as the tiger wearing the sea captain's hat and coat. Fun surprise ending!

LaRochelle brings us to the story jungle and takes us around the different settings around the jungle, with a common repetitive theme popping up everywhere. He describes each location very simply and just enough to get an idea.

Then there's a nice kick at the end :) which made me "laugh out loud" while I was reading it in my local bookstore.

In the vain of "We're Goin' on a Bear Hunt ..." Seems pretty topical for kids in the Detroit area given the baseball team that was on a run until very recently. Appears as if it would be a great read-aloud for storytime. Can make the kids do all of the motions to get away from the tiger ... and tire them right out by the end of the book. :-)

Some picture books are meant to be poured over, contemplated, enjoyed quietly. Others seem like they were written just for storytime. Such is this one! Perfect for reading aloud to preschoolers, this book has a great pace, a perfect ending, and fun little opportunities throughout for the kids to notice the tiger's tale and shout out!

Can't wait to use this one in a storytime -- it just begs to be read aloud with a group of kids!

A little boy sets out to tell a story, but keeps seeing a tiger everywhere he goes (his curving tail among the snakes, his shadowy shape in the cave). Tiger is outlined in bold black ink (illustrations are ink and digital media).

The kids will love this, I am sure. After the 4th time, I was kind of over it. But this would be very fun to read aloud and get the kids all riled up. Loved the bright colors. Illustrations are good--and I could tell that tiger was good from the beginning! Poor thing, especially with his expression after being landed on. Made me smile. Must try in storytime.

2/27/13 & 2/28/13: This was a great opening for my "Uh-Oh!" theme. Both groups loved it, though the larger Wed. crowd was more in to it...more

Illustrated by Jeremy Tankard. This is probably my favorite book of the year so far. It's funny, it invites kids to participate, and they can really get into it because they know what's going to happen every other page (hint: IT'S A TIGER!). I just love it. It's a total riot at storytime too. Basically my ideal storytime book :)
Lacy
My four year old LOVES this book. He loves the illustrations, loves the circular nature of the story line, and thinks every other page is hysterical. It is a fun read-aloud book, with whimsical illustrations. The narrative reads like a story a four year old would tell, so it appeals to him especially in that regard.
babyhippoface
The interactive style of narrative promises to make this book a ton of fun for reading aloud or sharing. I love Jeremy Tankard's style of big, blocky illustrations. Really, really cute. I think this is perfect for parents and caregivers to share one-on-one. The repeated "jump" scenes ensure that it will leave kids in giggles.
