Desmond Clark, a historian of 17th century philosophy and a leading biographer of Descarte, set out to '...rescue Arthur Dobbs from the shadow of eclipse.....' and in that he succeeded. Perhaps he did so too well as this is the only full length biography of Dobbs, a man instrumental in producing the War of the Regulation and therefore worthy of further study.

Dobbs' biography needed an author with some business or geography acumen as those were the fields in which Dobbs excelled. Clarke's interpr
