I read it in Romanian, and first thing I have to say, as a person who has learned some French, is that the translation has many mistakes.
Other than that, I definitely recommend the book, to anyone who wants to better understand what people mean when they talk about the very specific spirit of frenchmen.
The way all the characters are obsessed with growing old and ugly is a very well designed metaphor for how the modern society has devolved from trying to strengthen their spirit, to trying to con
...more

Cum am zis si in cazul altor titluri, ceea ce s-a scris in peste 200 de pagini, se putea scrie in 50.

Anxietate? Dezolare? Resemnare? Toate luate împreună, plus teribila plăcere a lecturii.

Βέβαια, that's a fact, αφού ο συγγραφέας εφαρμόζει το ίδιο κολπάκι (no spoilers here) που έπιασε τόπο στο Lunes de Fiel.

Interesting subject.. But It made me hoping that something more will happen.. And it didn't ! It's like he rushed into bringing this story to an end. On the other hand I liked the way his phrases are constructed, words are flowing.

Bruckner is one of those rare authors who succeeds in breaking the reader's mind cage and let every demon free. His books appear like case studies written by the infamous Mr Hyde if he was ever freed from Dr Jekyll's grip of sanity. With my recent lecture of yet another of his books, he surpasses the realm of sanity and real with outstanding easiness.
Although the story is told from the perspective of a lunatic, it unfolds its web to cast the veil of insanity upon the whole universe of the book.

The ideea seems taken from one of those low budget movies. Honestly i kept hoping that something else will happend besides the obvious..

The novel gives voice to the frustrations and fears of any decent person who knows that it is socially unacceptable to assess the right to existence and happiness of any human being, based solely on aestetic criteria. However, I am fairly sure that anyone, at a certain point, was faced with the shameful perspective of being jealous of the clear skies ahead of beautiful people.

At least on a first (rather naive) read, this novel (which, I admit, it is written in a style a tad pop compared to what I usually read - I have read though a very flawed translation in Romanian... and the quasi-philosophical premiss may not be too elaborate or unique either) pleasantly surprised me. Though jarring, it never actually fell into pornography and the plot turned out to be a lot less simpler than the back cover may deem it. The tendency of humans to put each other into positions of p ...more

Started deceivingly, as an apparent descriptive of a downward spiral into the murky waters of sickly relationships, but evolved into an engrossing and much deeper narrative.
A drama with elements of horror, the novel tells the story of a petty thief who steals bits of beauty from the works of others to create his masterpiece, only to have everything turned against him at cosmic proportions. He is turned himself into a work of beauty, a rotting carcass decorated with the most exquisite tastes of

I read this book in a few hours! The Beauty Stealers (original name Les Voleurs de Beauté, published in 1996) by Pascal Bruckner is an original and rough book, which presents the game of power between women and men, and most of all, the game of power between beautiful and ugly. The idea is extremely new (at least to me), it is strange, pessimistic, violent and sometimes just scary and the writing style is definitely french.
The novel is structured on 2 main stories: Helene & Benjamin’s story

O carte foarte buna, pune niste intrebari interesante despre conceptele fiecaruia despre frumusete.

I hadn't looked into the plot of the book before starting to read it, so when it was suddenly revealed at the middle of the book, I was in shock. I was actually in the subway and I missed my station. I hadn't expected such a brutal twist from what seemed to be a philosophical dilemma to a real-world, weird and malicious problem. Not many books have left me with this feeling, probably because I tend to inquire what they are about before reading them. Reader-to-reader tip - don't find out too

Worst book I have ever read. Waste of precious time.

O carte a regăsirii sinelui prin destăinuirea celuilalt.
If you're afraid of old age, this is the book for you. As usual, hats off to mister Bruckner, who can actually make a thriller based on a philosophical idea.
Good book with an awesome and original plot that eventually gives us an incomplete ending of an undeveloped potential.

Recommends it for: the ones who love Bruckner
Although is a novel from which I expected more..The key word of it must be - I guess - frustration..A halucinating story, in which cruelty, perversity, hate and sufference are interchangeable into a stange puzzle..
Scarying and strange..

Impeccable writing, terrifying story, tipical Bruckner novel. The frustration of getting old and the envy that beauty stirs, two human truths pushed to extreme.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The subject is very deep and makes you ask yourself regarding beauty and youth, about the time's traces, about body and spirit.
