These personal essays comprise the current issue of a creative nonfiction journal that I subscribe to. Before reading this I never thought much about the fact that doctors make human mistakes and yet cant talk about them for fear of malpractice suits. Or that medical mistakes are a recent phenomema because up until relatively recently it was any one's guess what the right treatment for most illnesses was - and if you dont know what is right, nothing can be wrong. I read this one shortly after quitting a job at a hospital. While some of the actual writing leaves a little to be desired, I couldn't agree more with what this book is saying: our health care system is built on a lack of communication which stems from a fear of malpractice lawsuits, and we are all in trouble.
