Ever since the accident, Carlos just isn't the same. He no longer gazes into the night sky, dreaming about becoming a basketball star. He doesn't even practice anymore, now that he's in a wheelchair.

But Christmas is coming, and Carlos' best friend, Willy, knows that if there is ever a time to cheer Carlos up, it's now. And what better to lift his spirits than a visit fro

Okay, I admit it--I teared up at the reference desk while reading this one. I love that what Santa REALLY brought was HOPE.

A holiday story of hope and friendship, Yin has written a heart warming story of two young Hispanic boys growing up in the projects. It has been colorfully and realistically illustrated by Chris Soentpiet. The characters are well developed and the reader learns much about the children's lives. It addresses plenty of important life learning issues which can a parent can easily discuss with their children. I however have two concerns about the book. First, I am unsure if rural children will be ...more

Excellent.

The pictures were beautiful, and there were a few two-page spreads that were simply gorgeous!

Excellent teachable moments and conversation starters in here, but very happy I read it during the day, as it would probably be too raw for the children before bed. (They had too many questio

Carlos isn't the same after the accident. He has lost hope. That is until he and his best friend Willy write to Santa to make a delivery to their Rough and tough apartment on the 19th floor.

This is a thoughtful and kind book. The illustrations remind me of the old Saturday Evening Posts.

This book is probably for older children as it does deal with some issues that small children may not understand.

Two little boys living in the 'bad' part of town and one being in a wheelchair neither believes Santa will find them in their apartment building because Santa has never been there before. But with the faith and friendship in one another and the faith of Christmas magic.

The copy we have isn't even in bound form--it's a publishers proof. But still, we love it and, even though it looks tacky, put it out with the others each year. It's great message of kindness within the walls of a New York tenement.
