Daniel
This is a collection of 33 essays written by Dunne in the 1970s, mostly about California or the west in general. Many of his essays, in particular the title essay, about the adoption of his daughter, are really well done. In general, Dunne has trouble closing the deal, however, and his formulaic essays tend to end with strange, ill-supported conclusions.
