In truth, I would give this a 3.5 stars with a wish. In the intro, Mr. Bledsoe expresses his interest in writing further adventures for Tanna and Ry. I am deeply interested, both because I want to see the growth of his writing from a few short stories written early in his career to an in depth novel after several works under his belt. I am also intrigued by the characters. I want to read about them, a little older, a little more experienced. I think it would make for some excellent stories!
The Firefly Witch by Alex Bledsoe contains three short stories about a small town reporter who falls in love with a beautiful woman unlike anyone he’s ever known before. From the first meeting of Ry and Tanna, it was obvious that there was going to be something between them. Ry is immediately attracted to Tanna even though he knows nothing about her except that she is a blind graduated student studying parapsychology. Of course, there turns out to be a lot more to Tanna than just that — she is a...more
As an introduction to the main characters of the three short stories contained within, The Firefly Witch is perfectly fine. I like both of them, and the tale of their meeting and eventual marriage is romantic and a little awkward. As a standalone narrative, it's not all that exciting. There simply isn't much actual -stuff- that happens, and the couple of obstacles to their relationship that briefly crop up are wholly inside the male lead's head (and are, as presented, pretty dimwitted). If Bleds...more
I read a few of the Firefly tales years ago--as well as a novel based on these characters--and never forgot them. I was beyond ecstatic when I discovered that Bledsoe was releasing some earlier stories about the down-to-earth Ry and his mysterious and charming partner Tanna.
Tanna is one of the most original and fascinating characters I've ever come across--a blind witch who can see through the eyes of fireflies. As a Pagan, I love how true these stories are, while at the same time appreciating t...more

Aside from being a talented novelist, Alex Bledsoe can spin a yarn of the short variety, too. The Firefly Witch presents three short stories that feature a small-town reporter recounting how he met and fell in love with a witch. Bewitched it is not.
Ry is working on a story for the paper and is introduced to a blind woman named Tanna who studies parapsychology. He's smitten with her from the get-go, and she's quite taken with him as well, due in no small part to the fact that she sees him during...more

I think I'm in love with Tanna! And I can really relate to Ry. I often feel lucky to have a loving wife by my side, despite her quirks and my failings. I'm a big fan of Alex Bledsoe, and even though this is some of his earlier work, it is just as strong and well-crafted as his recent releases. A must read for any of his fans, and everybody else, for that matter!

I grew up in west Tennessee an hour north of Graceland (home of Elvis) and twenty minutes from Nutbush (home of Tina Turner). I've been a reporter, editor, photographer and door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman. I now live in a big yellow house in Wisconsin, write before six in the morning and try to teach my two sons to act like they've been to town before.
