If anyone has read the James Herriot series "All Creatures Great and Small", or watched the series when it was on PBS a couple of decades ago, or watched "Ballykissangel" or "Doc Martin", I highly recommend this series by Patrick Taylor. This is number 7 in the "An Irish Country Doctor" series. It's all about the various people, centering on the two doctors, in the village of Ballybucklebo in Northern Ireland during the 60's with two of the books mostly flash backs to the past of two of the main...more
New in 2012, this is Taylor's latest story of the lives of people in a small Irish town. Dr. Fingal Flaherity (sp?) Finigan marries his sweetheart from years back. He'd broken up with her & married someone else; he couldn't get past the death of his 1st wife & avoided relationships until Kitty came back into his life.
Dr. Barry leaves for an internship of obstetrics; he doesn't know if that will be his specialty for sure & Dr. Fingal will gladly have him return if he decides being a c...more

Absolutely Delightful!
I had a chance to review A Dublin Student Doctor in the audiobook format in 2011 and I immediately fell in love with the series and this author. I find John Keating’s narrating for the characters just amazing. I originally got into this series because having worked in the medical field for years, I love my medical in books, and I find all the unique Vintage medical scenes in Taylor’s series fascinating. I love this series and this book was just as good as the others. I feel as though I am visiting with old friends. One of the things I love most about this series is the reality of the way the characters are portrayed. The medical parts are spoken of in a way that makes them completely understandable without feeling like I'm reading a textbook. The main theme, of course, is the upcoming wedding of Kitty and Dr. O'Reilly. Before that can happen there are all the happenings that a pair of country d...more
This most recent installment in the Irish Country series felt like something of a reunion. There it was, sitting on the library hold shelf with my name printed neatly on a that little scrap of paper. I half imagined the occupants of Ballybucklebo to be pushing their way out of the pages calling to me, "Hello, we're back! Fancy a cuppa tea?". How enjoyable it is to greet such old friends as they in the pages of Patrick Taylor's novels. The Irish brougue alone and colloquial witticisms are all th...more
Once again, I spent time in the Irish village of Ballybucklebo. This was the fifth book from the series that I have read and I enjoy my visit each time. The main character, Dr. Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly and his partner Dr. Barry Laverty serve the villagers as their GP's. The characters are so nicely developed that there are some who you love and others you detest. Everyday conflicts provide excitement in the story and keep you interested and wanting to know how things work out. You look forward...more
Admittedly, I was primed to like this book - I've truly enjoyed the other books in this series, so when I had a chance to read an Advance Readers' Edition, I jumped at it. I was not disappointed.
The main event in this installment is the wedding and plans for Dr. Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly and his first love, Kitty O'Halloran. Besides all of the wedding plans, the various inhabitants of Ballybucklebo are, as usual, having their own problems, successes, and life events that Drs. O'Reilly and Lavert...more

Another good (but not great) installment in the series. Perhaps it is time for Laverty to move on and bring on some new people in O'Reilly's life. I wonder though if the next book will stay in Ballybucklebo or follow Laverty. If it does follow him, then I hope he stops his whining. The man is an idiot when it comes to romance and it gets tiresome. And while some parts seem to just repeat the same old, same old book in and book out, I still somewhere the explanation for O'Reilly breaking up with...more
This is the seventh book in the series about the An Irish country doctor in the village of Ballybucklebo. I would give six of the seven 5 stars.
Through out the series the reader becomes more involved with Doctor O'Reilly and his young assistant, Doctor Laverty. They are the heart and soul of the village. The reader becomes increasingly acquainted with the housekeeper, Kinky, as well as many members of the area. The doctors treat the illnesses of villagers as well as solve many of the other probl...more

"I meant what I said to you, Donal, A year ago. I love it here....and if I live to be a hundred I'll never forget Ballybucklebo"
Dr. Barry Laverty
My sentiments exactly. These books are so good and this last installment of Patrick Taylor's "Irish Country" series is simply one of his best. The characters are the kind of people you would want to have as your friends and neighbors. Taylor apparently has little religious conviction, yet, reading these books, I cannot help but be reminded of the great...more

This is book 5, I think, in a series. It is the most recent one. I cannot express how much I enjoy this author. Patrick Taylor takes us into the heart of the village of Ballybuckleboo and into the hearts of the residents. One cannot help but love these folks as if they really exist. One shares their pains, gains, joys and heartaches as if they were our best friends. I sure hope there is another book to follow because I want to know what happens to these people, esp. Dr. Barry as he moves on. Thi...more
As much as I enjoy this series, this particular novel wasn't my favorite. It felt rushed, there was a lot of repeated thought, an excess of details of lust felt by the doctors for their lady loves, and an implausible situation where the conflict with the wicked councilman was wrapped up way too neatly. There was also melodrama - someone nearly drowning during a boat race, a beloved pet threatened by an evil neighbor (shades of Dorothy & Toto!), and an unexpected and serious illness by a main...more
I absolutely love this series set in Northern Ireland which depicts the life of country general practictioners in the mid 1960's. I was definitely in the mood to read this next book in the series, but compared to others it was a bit of a snoozefest. Not to say much happens in the other books, which are not page-turners. THe simplicity and quietness of these stories of the village folks and their medical problems and personal lives has always been comfortable and cozy to read. Perhaps the series...more
Patrick Taylor continues to enthrall readers with this seventh and latest installment in the "Irish Country Doctor" series. Doctor Fingal Flahertie O’Reilly is engaged to be married to Kitty O’Hallorhan, the sweetheart of his younger days. As wedding plans begin, Dr. O’Reilly must use his peace-making powers to avoid tension between his fiancée and his housekeeper, Kinky Kincaid. With the help of Barry Laverty, he is also still caring for his patients, including Donal Donnelly, who is as irascib...more
Really, really, really have enjoyed the previous 6 "Irish Country...series" and this latest does not disappoint either. I find myself checking in the summer to see if another In the series will be released in The Fall. This was as much fun to read as all of the previous...these are just enjoyable stories of life as we might possibly want it to be. Knowing our village, our friends and neighbors, the way we care about one another, all elements to embrace through the examples of the people of Bally...more

This is the seventh book in Patrick Taylor's "Irish Country" series -- most set in the little village of Ballybucklebo, Northern Ireland in the mid 1960s (the exception being AN IRISH COUNTRY GIRL set in County Cork in the 1920s and AN IRISH STUDENT DOCTOR" set in Dublin in the 1930s. All books are a charming glimpse into small-town life complete with loveable, quirky characters. Patrick Taylor is a wonderful storyteller and AN IRISH COUNTRY WEDDING (that of Fingal and his Kitty) is no exception...more

This series, starting with An Irish Country Doctor, is a delite to read. Each book can stand alone, but to fully appreciate the evolution of the relationships, the series should be read in order. I came to really like the characters and their interactions. There was a lump in my throat as I finished An Irish Country Wedding, and hope there will be more stories coming out of Ballybucklebo.
I have enjoyed this series learning about the citizens of Ballybucklebo, Ireland. I feel as if I have stepped into the world of a small village, complete with gossip, romance, mishaps and a bit of trickery. I hope the series will continue to follow Dr Laverty as well as the citizens of Ballybucklebo. This book delved more deeply into Irish politics than other books in the series.
I am an unabashed fan of this series. Taylor creates characters about whom it is easy to care. This is a feel good story and I am unapologetic in my affection for it. My one quibble with the series is Taylor's ignoring Northern Ireland politics which he answers in a foreword and I found perfectly reasonable. His is a work of fiction and that's how he wants his town to be.
This is closer to a 3 1/2 but I enjoyed it. I finally figured out that this series reminds me of the Number 1 Ladies Detective books by Alexander McCall Smith. Taylor does a nice job of explaining Ulster culture and language, and I am sure that much of what he describes of 45 years ago has disappeared. He always ties up ends to most story lines but they come to figure in to future stories, and he sets up some things to take up in his next book.
Another very enjoyable book in the Irish Country series. It is interesting to realize that even though this is written as an historical book, I was alive while the events were taking place. I really like the characters from this series and it was great to spend some more time with their stories and I am looking forward to the next installment.
Dr Flahertie, a small town Irish doctor, asks a long ago sweetheart to marry him. It's their courtship along with the towns quirky people and the many medical issues that arise. Problems handled so sensible. Each character is well drawn and interesting. Makes you feel as if you could walk right into the story.

Another great addition to Patrick Taylor's Irish country series. Taylor makes his characters come alive, he knows each one of them well and takes them each on their own journey as they develop and mature. Dr O'Reilly has calmed down considerably in his temperament, maybe because of Kitty's influence or maybe because he is getting older and mellowing with age. The wedding doesn't occur until the end of the book because.....well, it keeps you reading in search of it. A few new characters and anima...more
