A much needed addition to my toolkit, especially with upcoming grants focused on improving student services for first-generation college students. A quick and engaging read, it is almost a handbook of how to equip your campus to serve these students better, ultimately improving retention and graduation rates.

My one critique would be that it's not laden with data, but I think that was a thoughtful choice, making the book appeal more to humanists not interested in crunching data.

Great information about the experience for first-generation college students at today's colleges and universities. Provides some relevant examples of successful programming from several different universities. Thoughtfully written to assist educators who work with first-gen students.

I read this book in about one sitting, i.e., one session at the gym. It's unique in the sense that it focuses on first generation students IN COLLEGE. (Most studies stop once the students arrive). And the book is very well-researched. My primary qualm is that there's too much emphasis on what first gen students LACK. Yes, I know. These students don't have cultural captal. But what forms of capital do they bring to college? And how can universities capitalize on those strengths?

An excellent primer in the challenges facing first-generation college students. The book is less strong near the end, where there is a lot of space devoted to leadership models rather than specifics, but it is a worthwhile read nonetheless.
