Is there anything sweeter than your first true love? Or anything more heart breaking than that first love not playing out as you'd hoped? The Way Back by Carter Quinn covers this beautifully. What could have been an overload of angst has been handled perfectly with an under current of sweet and really funny humour which balances out the angst perfectly.

An all-boys story with women playing best girlfriends. Maybe I have this feeling since all three men involved were friends before becoming lovers, but indeed they bond on different levels, not only through love and sex. The interrelationships between Riley and Jason, and then Riley and Eric play well inside and outside the bedroom; plus they are all-100%-men, enjoying sports and outdoor life, even if Riley is a college professor.

It’s refreshing to read a story that isn’t offering pretty heroes and predictable dialog. With that said I think new authors with the best of intentions draw out their story a little longer than necessary in an effort to make it complete. I think “The Way Back” could have been pared down just a (tiny) bit because I found myself (towards the end) thinking – guys, let’s get it together and get on with it already. The angst (as much as we love it in romance) was drawn out a little more tha...more

In The Way Back Riley Evans has a big heart, but one he guards carefully. In his freshman year of college, Riley met the Walker brothers, Eric and Jason, and they trio became fast friends. Much like The Three Amigos, there was very little they didn’t know about each other, including the fact that Riley was hopelessly in love with Eric. Eric was dynamic, brash, with the confidence of a jock and the list...more

The story started quite good but went downhill fast, so unfortunately, I can't give it more than 2 stars. I simply didn't buy any of it. The characters behave like immature 15-year-olds, and the HEA comes out of nowhere and is absolutely not realistic or believable. If you want to read a story where the MC is a major asshole, this is the book for you.

Riley fell in love with Eric when they were freshmen in college but Eric couldn’t handle being gay, so he dumped Riley and married a woman. Six years later, Riley has just started a new relationship but is stunned when Eric contacts him out of the blue, asking for a second chance.
Riley has never gotten over his first love, vowing never to lose his heart again, and to make matters more complicated, his new lover is Eric’s older brother, Jason, who has also just come back into his life. The three...more

I have wanted to read this book for quite some time now and I'm glad that I finally did because I ended up loving it. What I liked most about The Way Back was the characters. They are portrayed as everyday people with flaws, hopes and insecurities.

Excellent first book. I could not put this down. Fell in love with the main and supporting characters. I didn't even see the twist coming, and I am usually hard to fool. I hope Eric is talking inside Carter's head and doesn't shut up until Carter writes Eric's story!! Can't wait for more from this very promising author.
This was an enjoyable read full of interesting characters. I had read Carter’s short story, “In The Crease” and was looking forward to this, his first novel. The story begins by introducing the reader to Riley and Jason, who are in a fairly new relationship that is comfortable and progressing nicely – until a phone call to Riley from his ex from six years prior. The ex, Eric, had rather suddenly left Riley for a woman, and Riley had never quite gotten over his feelings for Eric. Eric is looking...more
I had read Carter Quinn's short stories and really liked them so I was really looking forward to this novel. I was not disappointed. The story of Riley and Jason and Eric was a bit of a roller-coaster ride and even involved some throwing up! As the story begins, Riley and Jason are dating - six years after they had last seen each other in college. When all three had been friends in college, Eric and Riley ended up having an affair that Eric then ran out on and broke Riley's heart. Just as Riley...more
This book and its author have certainly impressed me. The themes tackled are among my least favourite ones and difficult to satisfyingly develop in general. By the end, I was happy with how the triangle had been resolved, as I wanted so much a truly happy ending for Jason who greatly deserved it, and Riley who had somewhat atoned for his hurtful actions.

Could be 4 stars but this book made me nervous and frustrated. Meanwhile I hope that Riley is a good teacher at school because in matters of the heart does not understand a lot and it seems that even as maturity has stopped in college. And it is certain paradoxes in the story that I was not convinced. Even Jason, who is the better character, mature, loving, funny and hot advises to attend Eric to Riley without asking him the times or manners. I am not convinced that Eric has matured, I disliked...more

This was almost a perfect read for me.
The characters were all I could hope for.
Jason I fell instantly in love with, Riley I loved but at times I wanted to shake him, and Eric who I still despise.
This story hit all my buttons with the love, jealousy and misunderstandings. The writing was well paced and I loved that there was no quick fix, but a realistic time period, although that was the only time I wanted to smack Jason. (view spoiler)...more

First love. We’ve all experienced it, and many of us were heartbroken when it didn’t work out. Although most of us are able to go on with our lives, unfortunately there are some of us who do not. There are those people who can’t get past the pain of losing their first love, and in my opinion the book, The Way Back is an excellent portrayal of exactly what can happen to those who have difficulty getting on with life after losing such an important person in their lives.

The book wasn't poorly written and I did feel compelled to finish it. Those are the reasons why I gave this 2 instead of 1 stars. I hated the MC Riley. I hated the brother Eric. I didn't like the best friend Melissa. (view spoiler)...more
This book will not be for everyone, but I was sure in the mood for something like this :D
As I started to read this, I was really pleased with how well the author captured the daily intimacies between Jason and Riley. As a reader, this drew me to them as a couple and I just really wanted good things for them. The washing the dog scene just made me all warm and fuzzy.
Then the story moved into the drama, secrets, and indiscretions - this is where some readers may be turned off by the story. I suck...more

Excellent read. I honestly wasn't sure of this when I read the first chapter online. I don't know if I wasn't in the right mood or what. But I saw some of the reviews and I said what the heck and I'm glad I read it. There were parts that had me sad and a little teary eyed and then there were parts that had me yelling at Riley. I also enjoyed some of the strategically placed comments that just fit the story well. I also like how the author fit in 'discombobulated'. Not everyone can do that and it...more
The first story I've read by Carter Quinn, and it won't be the last. Kept me engaged from start to finish. An odd sort of triangle Riley, and two brother, Jason and Eric. Loved Jason from the start. He is a true hero, complete with an Achilles heel. I liked Riley, but then he pissed my off (I got over it). All of the main characters are well developed, complete with assets and baggage. Lots of twists and turns. Some were predictable, but only in the sense that people do the dumbest things. One o...more
A few pages in, and I was worried. When I read "That night, the violence of the storm raging outside lost to the fierce passion we created", I thought I had found a book full of Cheetos. I fretted that the reviews I read had missed the mark. The language was kind of simple, and, well, I really wasn't all that vested in the characters. I knew where the story was going (it's an obvious theme). It was a slow start...

Excellent story! Filled with romance, angst and a whole lot of lovin' made for one terrific read. Riley and Jason are wonderful, charming characters. They will make you love them, laugh with them, cry for them and make you want to growl at them in frustration. This is one heck of a good book, folks, and is one that, I believe, needs to be added to everyone's m/m library.
Carter Quinn is an excellent writer who knows how to tell a story and I am very much looking forward to reading more by him!

Love triangle between two brothers and their best friend.
I praise the author choosing such a difficult theme.
The three young men have a big ZERO in self-awareness. They really just feel, act, react without understanding their own motive or each other's. They are very young. Each of them has a high amount of self-pity, and it is known for preventing people to see what's in front of them.
The emotional journey of the three men did not move me, and I found them self-indulgent in their pain. Howev...more

Wow. Just. Wow. This is by far one of my favorite reads so far this year. I laughed, I cried(a lot) throughout this whole book. Riley and Jason are so sweet together. There were plenty of times when I wanted to shake some sense into both of them. I bumped this book up to the top of my reading list on the recommendation from friend over on Live Journal. I'm so glad that I did, this book should not sit on anyone's to be read pile.

I enjoyed this very much! I picked it up because the premise intrigued me and didn’t sound as something I’ve read other variations of already. That relationship ended almost as soon as it began, and Riley hasn’t let anyone near his heart since. Jason however helped pick up the pieces. Carter Quinn was born and raised in a very small Western Kansas town where cattle vastly outnumber humans. Because he's contrary by nature, upon graduating high school, he went East, young man, hoping to find more people like him (shh: the gays!). After stints living in places as different as Omaha, Nebraska, and Ft Lauderdale, Florida, he settled in Lawrence, Kansas, and attended the University o...more
