Blurb: Riley, Jason, and Eric have known one another since their University of Kansas student days. Riley has been in love with Eric and had his heart broken by him. Stalwart and kind Jason is Eric’s older brother and has been there for Riley when he needed help mending his heart. Riley, Eric, and Jason have a tangled web of secrets, hurts, choices and in due course finding out what is really in their hearts.

Carter Quinn is a new author although his writing certainly belies his newcomer status. I enjoyed the story of Riley, Jason, and Eric, which is told from Riley’s POV. Carter has imbued Riley’s character with humor, vulnerability, complexity, but ultimately strength and determination. He is a little irrational from time to time, but I loved him for his confusion as well his sensitivity. Riley’s heart was broken six years earlier by his college friend and then lover Eric. Years later he is still wary of giving his heart for fear of getting hurt again. I think Carter gave us a character we can easily relate to as readers.

Jason and Eric are also fully developed complex characters. Jason is sexy, strong, giving, and tender. It’s easy to fall in love with the guy, but the wonderful thing that Carter did in this story is not make him perfect. You root for him but there are times when you want to thump him upside the head as well. Then we have his brother Eric, who is sex on wheels, and it would be easy to fall into the trap of making him an unsympathetic character due to the heartache he’s caused. However, the author has written a multilayered story that gives the reader deeper insight into the motives and reactions of each of these characters.

It’s refreshing to read a story that isn’t offering pretty heroes and predictable dialog. I think “The Way Back” could have been pared down just a (tiny) bit because I found myself (towards the end) thinking – guys, let’s get it together and get on with it already. The angst (as much as we love it in romance) was drawn out a little more than necessary for me. I like angst in a romantic story but a little goes a long way or it becomes a soap opera.

Overall, “The Way Back” is a great beginning for a new author. The story faults are minor ones and easily overlooked. I enjoyed the story and each of the characters. The sexual scenes were exceptional and sizzled off the pages. Carter has a gift and he will just keep getting better. I look forward to reading more from him in the future.

Is there anything sweeter than your first true love? Or anything more heart breaking than that first love not playing out as you'd hoped? The Way Back by Carter Quinn covers this beautifully. What could have been an overload of angst has been handled perfectly with an under current of sweet and really funny humour which balances out the angst perfectly.

An all-boys story with women playing best girlfriends. Maybe I have this feeling since all three men involved were friends before becoming lovers, but indeed they bond on different levels, not only through love and sex. The interrelationships between Riley and Jason, and then Riley and Eric play well inside and outside the bedroom; plus they are all-100%-men, enjoying sports and outdoor life, even if Riley is a college professor.

Six years later, Riley hadn’t had a serious relationship. Any time someone got close, he’d flee. He walled off his heart and his trust, and in the back of his mind, acknowledged that while he knew Eric wasn’t coming back to him, he couldn’t help wanting that very thing. A run-in with Jason at the local hardware store six years after the explosion surprised him, as did Jason’s subtle overtures to rekindle not only their friendship but perhaps let it grow into something more. The comfort between the old friends eased Riley into his first real relationship since Eric devastated him, and before Riley knew it, he had his first boyfriend in a long time. Things were moving along pleasantly, until Eric called, voicing his desire to get Riley back.

Already determined not to let Eric smash his heart again, Riley decided not to meet with him, to concentrate on his relationship with the brother who hadn’t hurt him so deeply. To his astonishment, Jason urged him to see Eric, find out if that spark, once so bright, had totally disappeared. Jason didn’t want to lose Riley, but he had to find out if Riley was ever really his to begin with, or if the ghost of Eric would always hang over them.

What ensues is an emotional roller-coaster filled with laughter, an old friendship coming to life, a deep look into the motivations of the heart, and jealousy so deep that someone is bound to get hurt. Convinced that Eric had been the love of his life, Riley agrees to Jason’s reasoning to see the wayward brother and answer his six-year-old question: did Eric ever really love him, and if so, did they deserve another chance?

Well written and realistic, this story touches on how one man’s past paves the way for his future, and how much what happened between Riley and Eric left its footprint on Riley’s ability to love again. Are they meant to be? Or did Eric hurt Riley beyond repair? Did Jason ever stand a chance or would he always remain in the shadow of Riley’s One that Got Away? With Eric’s acknowledgement of his mistakes, Riley can’t help but come to respect the man his friend and once-lover has become, but is it enough for him to walk away from Jason, the first man Riley’s been able to care for since Eric?

These relationships had me both cheering for and facepalming at the antics of all three men as Quinn takes us on a trip through a painful though nostalgic past, an uncertain future, and a rocky present that is enough to make even the biggest romantic consider how much risk the heart can take. Each character was well drawn, their motivations believable, and poor Riley’s confusion is palpable on every page. When an explosive argument shows Riley just how little control he had over what happened, both in college and since Eric’s return, I wanted to hug and pet him, and glare fiercely at both brothers for their bullheadedness, and maybe knock their heads together for good measure.

This story was also extremely nostalgic for me because it’s set in Lawrence, Kansas, home of the University of Kansas, where I attended classes before following my own uncertain future and heart. The setting had little effect on the story, but it was fun to read about Massachusetts Street, Free State Brewery, Paisanos, and so many other locations that played a role in my first two years of growing independence from under my parents’ wing. Finding oneself in college is one of the beauties of the adventure, and this story tells in rich detail how three men did just that, made connections and broke hearts, and grew up enough in the aftermath to try to repair the damage.

In my opinion, the pacing was good, the middle unpredictable, and the ending wasn’t too perfect to be believed. It was way too far into the book, though, for the revelation that Eric and Jason were brothers, and I had to go back to some of the earlier passages and see how that information changed the dynamic of the relationship I thought I was reading about. Entertaining and fun, angsty and frustrating, this book is a pleasant escape into the lives of other people who make mistakes and are man enough to try to fix them. We should all be so lucky to find that kind of courage in ourselves and our relationships.(less)

The story started quite good but went downhill fast, so unfortunately, I can't give it more than 2 stars. I simply didn't buy any of it. The characters behave like immature 15-year-olds, and the HEA comes out of nowhere and is absolutely not realistic or believable. If you want to read a story where the MC is a major asshole, this is the book for you.

What bugged me the most about the story wasn't even the purple prose in the last couple of chapters or the awkward first-person POV, but the MCs' total lack of motivation for their actions. The story just doesn't make sense. The MCs do what they need to do in order to move the story to the point the author wants it to reach. Their actions are illogical and don't make sense and are so far removed from anything realistic that it left me rolling my eyes and hoping for Jason to realize what assholes he's surrounding himself with and to get far, far away from them. Excellent first book. I could not put this down. Fell in love with the main and supporting characters. I didn't even see the twist coming, and I am usually hard to fool. I hope Eric is talking inside Carter's head and doesn't shut up until Carter writes Eric's story!! Can't wait for more from this very promising author.

Riley and Jason knew each other as good friends in college and have recently reconnected when Jason moved back from out of state. Jason is aware of Riley’s past with Eric. In a very interesting plot development – Jason ends up pretty much insisting that Riley see Eric, to find out if there is still something there for him: let the best man win and the chips fall where they may. This becomes a round robin of frustrations, laughs, and revelations (and the chance for readers to potentially want to choke some, or all, of the three guys.) I certainly didn’t dislike any of the guys, although I was at times confuzzled by their actions (I think they were too!). Never fear though, Carter’s writing gives them all plausibility.

I felt Eric had a lot of nerve blowing (ahem) back into Riley’s life – and, as it turns out, repeating history. Jason was really a stand-up guy throughout, both strong, yet vulnerable. Riley, Riley, Riley. Jeopardizing a solid relationship with a really great guy to re-connect with someone who left you at the curb years ago? Ack! Ah well, one can’t control matters of the heart, as Riley well finds out. There are many great plot twists in this story - which I love – and which really kept me wondering just exactly how these relationships were going to work out. Of course, I was ultimately very happy with how it all worked out! Riley’s friends, Melissa and Marc, were awesome secondary characters.

Looking forward to more writing from Carter Quinn – and would enjoy reading more about the characters from The Way Back.

This book and its author have certainly impressed me. The themes tackled are among my least favourite ones and difficult to satisfyingly develop in general. By the end, I was happy with how the triangle had been resolved, as I wanted so much a truly happy ending for Jason who greatly deserved it, and Riley who had somewhat atoned for his hurtful actions.

Could be 4 stars but this book made me nervous and frustrated. Meanwhile I hope that Riley is a good teacher at school because in matters of the heart does not understand a lot and it seems that even as maturity has stopped in college. And it is certain paradoxes in the story that I was not convinced. This was almost a perfect read for me.

The characters were all I could hope for.

Jason I fell instantly in love with, Riley I loved but at times I wanted to shake him, and Eric who I still despise.

First love. We’ve all experienced it, and many of us were heartbroken when it didn’t work out. Although most of us are able to go on with our lives, unfortunately there are some of us who do not. There are those people who can’t get past the pain of losing their first love, and in my opinion the book, The Way Back is an excellent portrayal of exactly what can happen to those who have difficulty getting on with life after losing such an important person in their lives.

Although most of us are able to go on with our lives, unfortunately there are some of us who do not. There are those people who can’t get past the pain of losing their first love, and in my opinion the book, The Way Back is an excellent portrayal of exactly what can happen to those who have difficulty getting on with life after losing such an important person in their lives.

For the past six years, Riley has been going through the motions of life. Although he enjoys his job and has good friends, Riley has successfully kept perspective suitors at bay. You see, six years ago Riley fell madly in love with Eric, and when his lover left him to marry a woman, Riley never got over it. For years, Riley was consumed with the hope Eric would come to this senses and return to him, but to Riley’s utter sadness it does not. But, one of Riley’s best friends, Jason, has been a staple in Riley’s life. Ironically, Jason is Eric’s brother and he’s been estranged from Eric for years.

Ever since he met Riley, Jason has loved him. He’s been a devoted friend, and helped Riley pick up the pieces of his life when his brother left him heartbroken. Finally, after years of hoping that Riley will see him as more than a friend, they start to date and quickly become comfortable in their new budding relationship. But just as things are starting to really heat up between them, out of the blue, Eric calls and Riley is faced with the difficult decision of what to do.

I really loved this book! I could easily empathize with Riley’s loss. I understood why Riley had difficulty letting go of the hurt and betrayal that Eric put him through. I also quickly rallied behind Riley and Jason’s relationship. Early on, it’s very apparent that these two men really fit well together and have a strong foundation of friendship and more between them. When Eric calls and once again disrupts Riley’s life, I was a little surprised that Jason actually encourages Riley to see Eric, so he can hopefully get some closure from the past. It was painful to me to watch Eric and Riley try to rekindle their feelings, while the sweet and amazing Jason patiently waited for Riley work through his issues.

I loved Jason! He’s smart, sexy and such a patient and amazing man. I also appreciated that even though he wants Riley to work through his issues, he’s definitely NOT a doormat either. I liked that he took no crap off of Riley (you’ll have to read why) and once Riley got a clue and realized how much he loved Jason, he actually had to fight AND eat a little crow to keep Jason beside him.

As much as I loved Jason, I hated Eric. Honestly, I don’t know if I ever really warmed up to him much. I realize he too had to find his own way, but I thought he was very self-centered and careless with his actions, and it was because of these careless actions that led to some serious consequences for all of them. He kind of redeemed himself in the end, but I still never cared for him.

I loved the complex triangle Mr. Carter created between the three characters, and I enjoyed watching the three of them work through their issues and come to a very realistic and natural conclusion. Mr. Carter really is able to get to the heart and soul of his characters. I thought all of them were very well written and interesting people in their own right. I also appreciated how much personal growth Riley goes through as the story progressed. All three of them really do live and learn from their past and past mistakes, and I enjoyed watching them grow into stronger-better men.

The Way Back is written in first person through Riley’s eyes. Because Riley is such a likeable character, I really enjoyed seeing what was going on in his head. I also loved the banter between Riley and Jason, and the strong chemistry they had together. There were also times I wanted to choke Riley for being blind, but then in the next moment I felt the intense need hug him for the bittersweet journey he goes through to truly find his true love.

This is the first book I’ve read by Carter Quinn and it definitely won’t be my last. I really enjoyed the author’s easy style of writing and intense storytelling ability, that immediately gripped this reader’s attention very early on and held it until it was finished. I’m looking forward to reading more by Mr. Quinn and highly recommend The Way Back if you are craving a romantic read about discovering what true love really is. Highly Recommended!(less)

This book will not be for everyone, but I was sure in the mood for something like this :D

As I started to read this, I was really pleased with how well the author captured the daily intimacies between Jason and Riley. As a reader, this drew me to them as a couple and I just really wanted good things for them. The washing the dog scene just made me all warm and fuzzy.

Excellent read. I honestly wasn't sure of this when I read the first chapter online. I don't know if I wasn't in the right mood or what. But I saw some of the reviews and I said what the heck and I'm glad I read it. There were parts that had me sad and a little teary eyed and then there were parts that had me yelling at Riley. The first story I've read by Carter Quinn, and it won't be the last. Kept me engaged from start to finish. An odd sort of triangle Riley, and two brother, Jason and Eric. Loved Jason from the start. Excellent story! Filled with romance, angst and a whole lot of lovin' made for one terrific read. Riley and Jason are wonderful, charming characters. They will make you love them, laugh with them, cry for them and make you want to growl at them in frustration. This is one heck of a good book, folks, and is one that, I believe, needs to be added to everyone's m/m library.

Carter Quinn is an excellent writer who knows how to tell a story and I am very much looking forward to reading more by him!

Love triangle between two brothers and their best friend.
I praise the author choosing such a difficult theme.

The three young men have a big ZERO in self-awareness. They really just feel, act, react without understanding their own motive or each other's. They are very young. Each of them has a high amount of self-pity, and it is known for preventing people to see what's in front of them.

Wow. Just. Wow. This is by far one of my favorite reads so far this year. I laughed, I cried(a lot) throughout this whole book. Riley and Jason are so sweet together. There were plenty of times when I wanted to shake some sense into both of them. I bumped this book up to the top of my reading list on the recommendation from friend over on Live Journal. I'm so glad that I did, this book should not sit on anyone's to be read pile.

I enjoyed this very much! I picked it up because the premise intrigued me and didn’t sound as something I’ve read other variations of already. It’s about Riley who met his two best friends, Jason and Eric, six years ago and soon thereafter his friendship with Eric turned into something much more.
