I found some areas in the book too simplistic and shallow - to such a degree that after reflecting on what I've just read I found to my amazement that two pages could have been written in just a few sentences and still conserve the whole information - e.g. the review of contemporary views on psychology in the first chapter is very shallow.

Bought and read this (big, heavy hardbound) book for a university Psych 101 class that I had waaaaay back in 1996. I actually learned a lot in that class, though it was mostly the basics like Pavlov's dog and group psychology. I kept the book for several years after that, reading it now and then out of pure interest, but I didn't take more psychology classes.
