Beneath the Moon and Stars review

You could call this a ghost murder mystery. It had a pretty interesting concept. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of this book is creepy. Its insanely creepy and suspensful. It kept me reading because I wanted to know what was going to happen. The ending was a little abrubt so I'm curious to see where this series is going to go.

For the last month I have been searching for a good YA horror novel. I'm not sure why I was craving it, but I do know that it was really hard to track something down that I really wanted to read. I pretty much gave up and then I stumbled across The Possession of Cassie Quinn. I was excited enough about the word "possession" in the title, and then I got even more excited when I saw that it was a Minnesota author pubbed by a Minnesota press.

The beginning of the book reads like a good horror movie...more For the last month I have been searching for a good YA horror novel. I'm not sure why I was craving it, but I do know that it was really hard to track something down that I really wanted to read. I pretty much gave up and then I stumbled across The Possession of Cassie Quinn. I was excited enough about the word "possession" in the title, and then I got even more excited when I saw that it was a Minnesota author pubbed by a Minnesota press.

The beginning of the book reads like a good horror movie - kind of quiet, almost eerie snapshots of this new house that Cassie and her family have just moved to. It gives you the feeling that there is a shadow over everything, but maybe you're just imagining things. Then, when apparitions start popping up and leaving messages, you know it's not just your imagination. Even though Cassie still thinks so. I appreciated Cassie and her disposition to find a reasonable explanation for messages left on the the mirror and the wall. It takes her a bit of persuasion to come to terms with a haunting, and not the fact that her possibly-evil stepsister isn't just trying to freak her out.

There's more to the book that chilling moments and building tension. Cassie and her stepsister, Ashleigh, quickly fall in with the group of friends who knew the boy who died in the woods outside their house. They offer the background story - a story that I think would have been just as thrilling and terrifiying to read. There are quite a few secondary characters that play roles in this story, and Knutson handled that quite nicely. The novel could have easily been overwhelmed by the number of characters - but there is something in the safety of numbers when it comes to the paranormal that makes them all crucial to the story. And Ashleigh's friend, Amber, the self proclaimed spirit expert, is such a fun character to read.

This story hit close to home, quite literally. It takes place just about an hour or so from where I live. I also live right on the edge of the woods, like Cassie does. The woods are indeed terrifying. Just walking by them at night freaks me out a bit; I can't imagine actually going in them when it's dark. Knutson utilizes the over-active imagination that kicks in when in proximity to a setting like this in order to create a really great setting. Even better, I had ghosts of my own when I was a teenager. I used to have a group of friends come over and we'd hope for the ghosts to show themselves. Reading this book just brought out that incredible teen energy, twinging with nervous anticipation.

I was reading this book half expecting my ghosts to reappear and thinking I'd lift my head and there'd be messages burned into my wall. The story behind the spirits haunting Cassie is rich and full of the potential of more to be uncovered. The ending in itself is worth reading the book for. Thankfully, there will be a sequel, out in June 2013, because I am dying for more of this story after the way it ended. This was a great debut and exactly what I was hoping for when I was looking for good YA horror.

The book started off in a way that would be expected for a horror story, slow and with lots of build up. Cassie and her mother, sister, step-father and step-sister are just moving into their new house when the story kicks off. Cassie and Ashleigh (step-sister) begin to notice strange things going on in the house, illusions and cryptic messages on walls, Andie, Cassie's little sister, goes wandering off in the woods and says that Cassie led her into the forest, when really she was waiting for her on the other side. Then they find out that a boy had drowned in the pond. Cassie, Ashleigh, and their new friends all become immersed in a mystery, trying to figure out who or what is haunting them. All they know is something is there, watching them, and waiting for one of them to venture out into the woods alone...

I made the mistake of trying to start reading this at around 1am... It was dark, everyone asleep, and my house is kind of creaky and likes to... settle, at night. Needless to say, after about 30 pages I had to put it down and read something happy, cause I was getting creeped out. But I picked it up the next day and couldn't put it down. I read it all in one sitting, because it was just so good! Knutson has a great talent for mysterious horrors, and making them feel real to the reader. Even though a lot of the things that happened were things we see in a lot of stories about hauntings, it felt unique and different. I really liked Cassie... She was very rational and I appreciated that she thought of all reasonable explanations before she could even think of something like ghosts. There were a lot of secondary characters in this book, but they all played a role and were never just there. We learn a bit about each of them, so that was nicely done. I never felt confused or wondered why the author wrote that, because it all went with the story, and that's how it's supposed to be, right? I loved Cassie's and Ashleigh's new friends and old friends alike. They were all great, as well as the two adults who helped them with the ghostly activities. Their parents were there too, and played a part, as well as the little sister, Andie. Everyone had a spot and a reason to be in the book. Which I loved.

I think any fan of something freaky would enjoy The Possession of Cassie Quinn. It was written well, with lots of suspense and detail. It was a quick read, and it left on such a huge cliffhanger, I was in shock. I am so excited to see what happens in the next book, which is being released June 2013. I'm sure it will be filled with creepiness and freakishness!

I'll admit, I haven't been accepting many author review requests recently because I'm so backed up with other books I want to read and review, but something about the plot description of The Possession of Cassie Quinn really, really appealed to me, as did the creepy cover. About this book you can really tell it's a ghost murder mystery. It had an very interesting concept too it.This book is really creepy to me, I was a little scared. Ghost stories are always intriguing to me. From the cover to the last page, this book is creepy! And that's totally a good thing. The Possession of Cassie Quinn is a story about a girl moving into a new house that has some pretty terrifying history. I loved the ghost story. It read like an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? and quickly sucked me into the pages.

I am slowing becomes a huge supernatural horror fan. The Possession of Cassie Quinn just reminds me of why I fell in love with this type of book. Honestly this book just totally freaked me out and made me have goosebumps most of the way through. As the book begins we learn that Cassie's Mother has just gotten remarried to a man named Dave and is now stuck with a new step-sister, Ashleigh. Cassie and her little sister, Andie are forced to move away and live in a large house in the country with her new family. Cassie just wants to be done with the move and carry on with her now fractured life the best she can. Cassie begins having frightening and confusing dreams about something that happen in the house years ago. She'll find out that the house holds many secrets, ones too dark to be told. So when things become even weirder for her upon moving it she is all but happy. In her bedroom she receive terrifying messages that is from beyond the grave. LEAVE! Someone or "something" does not want Cassie and her family to live there. With no one to turn to she begins to make friends with the local kids and discovers they are the key to finding out what really happen and what she can do to end this. But finding the truth may end up killing her or..... worse!

No spoilers there because I don't want to give away any of the good scary parts. I must say I was very surprised but how amazing the story was. I love a good scare but this just has me looking over my shoulder for a week after. The Author Kathryn Knutson really did a excellent job at making the me feel like I was right there with Cassie while the events were taking place around her. Cassie is a strong female protagonist and reading from her POV was much more thrilling than it would have been from a 3rd person POV. The book was short read but all the more reason to want to reach the end. The last few pages I found to scare me the most and was definitely a conclusion I was not suspecting.

The one and only thing that I did not care for was the pace of the book. I found myself stopping and coming back a lot. While the author's writing was very edgy and predominant it got a little choppy at times during the book. Other than that I would say I truly enjoyed the book and would love to read the next installment.

The Possession of Cassie Quinn is a beautifully hunting tale. A thrilling ride from start to finish. A MUST read for a supernatural/horror fans. This book left me with the chills long after the last page.

Right of the bat t he book started off just the way you would expect any typical horror story, to start slow with lots of build up which is always so much fun, It starts with Cassie her mother, younger-sister, step-father and step-sister just moving into their new farm-house as a new family , Cassie and Ashleigh (step-sister) end up sharing a room together which is no fun since they dislike one another. But thats just the beginning of the craziness soon the two girls begin to notice strange things going on in the house, mostly in their shared bedroom illusions and cryptic messages are showing up on walls.

Then one day Cassie's little sister wanders off into the woods stating Cassie was the one who led her there ??,When in-reality she was waiting for her on the other side of the woods. As time progress and all the eerie stuff don't stop Cassie, Ashleigh, become more intrigued & along with their new friends they all dive into the history surrounding the house first they find out a boy drowned in the pond in the forest behind the house spooky huh?? Then trying to figure out who or what is haunting them is making them all a little extra crazy . But they all know one thing for sure they all agree that there is something or someone watching them, and waiting for one of them to venture out into the dark creepy woods alone!!!

Now Mrs Knutson,sure knows how to scare the crap outta you let me tell ya reading this book alone at like 3am not recommended, cause lots stuff start popping into your mind & in reality you end up feeling like your Cassie and this is all happening to you!!!

The storyline behind the spirit/s haunting Cassie is dark eerie & friggin awesome with all of it being uncovered you know its well worth the read . The ending itself is worth every last page to-be exact Thank god , there will be a sequel, out in June 2013, cause lord knows I can't wait I'm dying for more of this story especially after the way it ended. In my books this was an awesome début book for Mrs Knutson and an amazing read for me :D(less)

Sequel? Seriously, I need the sequel! I'm sure if I look hard enough there were flaws, but Ms. Knutson created such a surprising thrill that I don't even want to try.
When I first started the book, I was in a camper, in the woods, at night, during a bad storm. It was the perfect setting to be reading this horror (light according to the author but perfect in my opinion) book. When the author e-mailed me about this book, I just knew I had to read it. I was looking for a good horror read, and those that I have recently read hadn't exactly been satisfying, so I'm so glad I read The Possession of Cassie Quinn (what a long title!)! I was pleasantly surprised with this book. There's so much horror and mystery, and you know me, I love horror and mystery. ;)
