Excellent m/m paranormal romantic suspense in which Roan's abilities continue to develop in new and inexplicable ways and he and Dylan face some hard truths about themselves and their relationship.

My long nails are toast. Infected: Shift had so many edge-of-your-seat scenes and action sequences paired with emotional suspense and drama, that I needed an outlet. I was out of chocolate so my nails paid the price from reading chapter after chapter of intelligent, gripping and sharp as a blade storytelling. Ms. Speed has cemented my continued fascination with Roan and his life’s challenges with this clever and well written tale full...more

What can I other than I loved it, loved it, loved it?! Oh boy, I really hesitated reading the rest of this series despite loving the first one, as I knew Paris was going to die, but now, I am so glad I eventually pushed on, as this has become one of my favorite series. Andrea Speed's characters are unique; flawed, depressed, dark and yet funny, protective and undeniably loving. Her dialogue flows well, and truly reflects the individual characters, often with the perfect amount of sneaky sarcasm....more

No. No, no, no. A book cannot just end like that.
Okay, apparently it can, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. Okay, apparently that’s not true either, because I loved it, which I suppose means that I more than liked it. ::sigh:: I think I get too involved with the characters in the books I read, which may or may not be entirely normal. The jury’s still out.
Is it just me, or does this series keep getting better? Roan McKichan keeps getting more complex, even as what he is and how (or if) he...more

Just a quick warning that there maybe spoilers for the previous books in the Infected series in this review.
After thinking about it, I’ve come to the conclusion that this is my favourite book in this Infected series so far. It’s more assuredly written for a start with a cohesion which has been missing from some of the other books. It’s tighter in terms of pacing, and less inclined to wander off from the plot. I also found that the two parts of the book were more fluid in the way they were connec...more

Andrea Speed's Infected series is simply too good. There isn't anything to not like! No niggles, no inconsistencies to make me stop and scratch my head. Wonderful language, well paced story line, inrticate and unbelievably good world building. And all this is just the foundation for the rest of the goodie bag. Oh my!
Roan has come to sort of a crossroads. He has struggled most of his life to find a reason to go on, and mostly his answer has been a finger in the face of those that doesn't approv...more

Shift is the fifth book in Andrea Speed’s Infected series. This is a tightly linked series and the books should be read in order. This review may have some spoilers for previous books in the series.
It’s a typical day for Roan McKitchan in that there was nothing typical about it. His new client is a wall of a man who just happens to be a hockey player with a 10 year old case involving a transgendered person’s suicide that just might be murder. Roan’s...more

Roan is a former Cop, Private Investigator, who is infected with a virus that makes him turn into a lion. He was born with the virus. A virus child, who should be deformed and brain damaged, but instead is brilliant at his job and also superhuman.
Book five of the Infected series does not disappoint. Once again we get two mysteries for the price of one. And I loved the introduction of Roan’s new brother’s in arms, an entire hockey team. If you’re squeamish because the lead character is gay, don’t...more

Once again Andrea Speed knocks it out of the park. Roan McKichan is definitely my #1 favorite hero. More than Ty Grady or Jake Riordan even (blasphemous though that may be). My only complaint is that the damn book ended. Not that it was too short, it certainly wasn't, I just didn't want it to end.
This book brought in new supporting players in the form of a semi-pro hockey team that adopt Roan (and Dylan by extension) and bring the charm and funny in a lot of great scenes. Holden is again a key p...more

This installment of the series has pretty much the same strengths and weaknesses of the preceding volumes.
On the plus side, Speed continues to do great character and emotional work with a mix of introspection and an inarticulate, confused, raw emotiveness that seems both genuine and affecting to me. Speed also constructs engaging plots that have enough complication to keep you thinking and enough action to keep you looking for the next big blowup. This series continues to be enthralling and excellently written. Book two is still my favorite (*sigh* Paris) but I'm becoming extremely fond of Dylan and also of Holden. This book has some of the funniest moments of the series. The scenes with Roan and the hockey team which adopts him as an honorary member are wonderful. The relationship between Roan and Dylan moves forward in believable and sometimes painful ways, and Roan's adaptation to his virus is still evolving. His attempts to balance th...more
I think this might be one of my favorite Infecteds in the series because we get to see the softer side of Roan a touch more often this time. Roan finds out that he no longer has a virus cycle; his partial shifts have completely thrown him out of it to where he's no longer beholden to changing into the lion; he is truly a freak of nature and superhuman now, and people are starting to notice. (Those YouTube videos just keep going viral.) However, he realizes that now he's starting to shift into th...more
I have so much love for Andrea Speed's Infected series. Just finished Infected: Shift, book 5 of the series, and I love it just as much as any of the others.
Ms Speed makes me laugh out loud on one page and cry on the next. I am as attached to Roan McKichan as I hope my wallpaper is to my wall.
Lovely stuff: if you've not read it, you need to get a life and do it.

What an exceptional ending? this book was to the Infected series. Roan and Dylan are having their relationship ups and downs due to their own insecurities and a long tally of lies on Roan's part. The virus seems to have mutated making Roan one of a kind Infected and Dr. Rosenberg doesn't even have a clue about what is happening in Roan's body. Roan manages to pick up two big clients. He is hired by Grey Williams who is a professional...more

Book 8: Shift (free version read January 2011, released version read June 2012)
This is the first story that brings one of the most lovable and hilariously fun hockey teams ever, The Seattle Falcons. It is started from Roan taking a case from Grey Williams, Falcon's defenseman, to take a look of a murder case which might involves corrupted cop. Along the way, the hockey team seems to adopt Roan as their own, which is highly amusing :). Holden keeps his status as bad-ass assistant detective to Roa...more

I love this series, I don't remember if I've begun all my revs the same way, but yeah, I love it.
In the two episodes of the book, there are quite a few changes.
Roan is changing physically and it seems he gets stronger but also more fragile at the same time. On one hand the lion virus allows him physical strength, inhuman reflexes, exceptional powers of smell, on the other hand it seems to take over beyond Roan's control. There is still a degree of consciousness in Roan, but it seems to become m...more

Another wonderful installment in the Infected series. Against all odds, every book is better than the last. This one is just masterful.
A couple of issues kept it from being a 5-star read for me:
*There were a couple of situations that needed a sex scene between the MCs. The lack detracted from my reading experience, making it more difficult for me to buy into the depth of their love and commitment to each other. Is it non-negotiable, Ms. Speed, that you write in a scene with Roan and Dylan makin...more

I really love this series. Roan is just the best character - complex, dark, driven, haunted. I love/hate the scenes with Paris. They make me so sad for them :( But it's Paris :)
I do like the way Dylan and Roan's relationship is changing, although I'm a little scared for Dylan for a lot of reasons. This is the scariest episode yet. Roan's "adaptation" makes him even more wary.

I think this series gets better and better. It was tough getting over Paris's death because he was so perfect with Roan. I wasn't sure how I felt about Dylan in the last book, but now I enjoy seeing him dealing with Roan's world. Holden is still my favorite character and I'm glad he got to shine in this book.
I was totally sucked in by this one. I love Roan, and while I really miss Paris, I adore Dylan.
I also have a thing for hockey players, so I was delighted by Roan's new friends. I hope they show up in the next book.

So This one was still very good but I want to mention that I'm still not convinced in Dylan. His character just doesn't do it for me. I love Holden, too bad Holden and Roan are too alike to hook up.
This series just keeps getting better and better. I love Roan, he's a great character and it was nice to finally begin to "see" who Dylan is. Their relationship gelled for me in this one. Roan's dreams of Paris are heartbreaking and so sweet and I love that while his feelings for Dylan are real it's obvious that Paris will always be with him as well. The addition of Grey and the hockey team brings a lot of humor to the story and allows a new layer of Roan's complicated personality to shine throu...more
