A few days ago, I posted a review of Book 1 of Evan Angler's series, Swipe. In that review, I mentioned many reasons why I fell in love with this series, including a return to classic dystopian elements and high action and suspense. But I haven't discussed the biggest reason I respect Evan Angler's amazing series - the world.

Many dystopian tales deal with oppressive governments, the country in shambles, and the people living in squalid conditions. As entertaining it is to read about such circumstances (I know, we're sadists), these worlds are not entirely believable. Even after an apocalyptic event such as a war or famine, people in the US don't just lose their inherent independence, and their ultimate goal toward a comfortable existence. Do you really believe that the public (in the near future) would just accept a government's tyranny and cruelty without question, leaving one or two teenagers to suddenly realize - "Hey! This isn't fair. This isn't right!" This isn't North Korea - in most of these books, the people haven't been systematically brainwashed like in 1984.
No, I'm not trying to ruin dystopian tales for you. Even as I say this, I'm planning to read a book having the above inconsistencies... and I'll probably enjoy it too.

The point to all this is that Angler has been uniquely smart enough to overcome such flaws. In his world, the people are given a choice - comfort or freedom. Here, the Marked do not live in constant fear of the government; on the contrary, if you accept the Mark, you are promised ultimate comfort, access to mind-boggling technology, and an easy life. The only thing the leader would ask in return would be your freedom to choose. I'll let Peck himself elaborate:
"You see, Logan, Cylis gave the world the easy path, and the world took it. Can't blame anyone for that, really--we'd had it pretty hard up until then. War, famine, plague, a devastated economy, environmental destruction..." Peck was quiet for a moment.
"The things we fight for... have fought for, throughout history... they're the liberties. The right to speak your mind, the right to be happy, the right to worship the way you want, to be treated equally..."
"Dictators of the past took those freedoms away. And the world always fought back."
"But Cylis never took anything. He offered. Offered alternatives to freedom that made life so easy, who could turn them down?"
"The Mark, the Religious Inclusion, the Global Union...they all share a single goal: to give us a life so easy that we want to surrender our freedoms. A life so easy that we want to hand over our individuality and abandon choice. Because to keep them is to take the difficult path." Peck sighed. "The world was ready for things to be a little easier. And choices are hard."

I really can't follow that with any critiques of my own.
Therefore, you should read this series because -
1) It has a believable world.
2) It doesn't have teen angst and drama, it's simple and to-the-point.
3) It's moralistic. At the end of the day, I want to read something that will make me think, that will help me appreciate what I have now and the human capacity. And that's exactly what this series will give you - in addition to a riveting story, it will show you just how meaningful your freedom to choose is, as evidenced by the quote above.
3) Each book so far has ended with amazingly-crafted cliffhangers. Stripping everything else away, it is a smart thriller with suspense and twists on every page. I don't think I can wait long enough for Book 3!(less)

What it's about: Logan is back and he is still on the run from DOME. Peck and the Dust are still out there, trying to find out about where Lily is being kept. Erin is missing Logan and desperate to find out where he is. The journey continues with the Markless against DOME and all the secrets hidden along the way.

I tend to prefer to read for information, but every once in a while, i delve into a fictional book, usually of a similar genre, and this was just perfect for my current fiction delve.

The story surrounds the protagonists, Logan and Erin, as they deal with their own family situations and catastrophic result of Logan's failed mark appointment. I don't want to say too much, for fear of spoiling the story, but i'll say this. Angler is a skilled storyteller, one who is more creative than I can fathom being in devising intricate and elaborate story lines and leaving you wanting to find out what happens next!

I will say that as a writer, i noticed some flaws in the series, First, it is pretty simplistic, language-wise, however, it is marketed for preteens so that would make sense. Also, the situations in the story seem prone to be a bit far fetched and even sometimes unrealistic, (taking into consideration the genre). My major complaint is that I find it really hard to tell who's speaking, with a preponderance of quotations, often back to back, its hard to tell WHICH character is speaking. I've found myself stopping, and trying to figure out who said what, quite often. But i'm a writer and a language snob, so take it with a grain of salt, and do NOT let that stop you from experiencing this fabulous series! I reluctantly give it 4 stars due to the issues mentioned above, otherwise it would be a 5 star book easily. LOVE it.

I've been waiting for this book from the moment I finished Swipe, and I was not disappointed. The voice of each character and the writing style of the author is just as brilliant and clear. I've begun to notice certain writing rules Evan Angler breaks regularly, but it really works for him, because he does it consistently and it matches the tone of the book. Yup, this is taken from the book of Revelation. But, this story is very different from the normal end-times genre book.

For one thing, not all the markless (those without a mark) are Christian. All citizens get the Mark when the Pledge themselves, so there are many who, for one reason or the other, refuse to be marked. In fact, most of the characters don't know of Christianity - these are teenagers born into this world, who have never heard of a religion that "disappeared" a long time ago. Which made it really refreshing to see the characters journey towards Christ, something that came of their own free will as they fight against DOME (the people who are Marking others).

There are a few characters in the book, but for Sneak, the four that I noticed/paid the most attention to were: Logan, Peck, Erin and Hailey. Logan is arguably the book's main character - he's the one who's on the run from the authorities, and the one who's made the most "ruckus". Peck is the leader of the Dust, a group of Markless kids. Erin is Marked, and she was a traitor. Hailey is part of the Dust. They know each other because (and here is where it's a bit hard to explain) - Peck's good friend Lily is Logan's sister (and the two are trying to rescuse her). I don't quite remember about Erin and Hailey, but I imagine they went to the same school.

The four characters were engaging, and I found myself drawn into their personal struggles. And at the end of the book, each character grows.

Since I hadn't read the first book, I found it hard to keep up at the begining, because the book moves at a fairly fast pace. But after a few chapters, I got into the rythmn and couldn't put the book down.

This is a really original take on the End-Times genre, and you can see the influence of Dystopian fiction on it. And it makes perfect sense, at the end of the world, what we should expect is Dystopia, not Utopia.

The genre “Dystopian,” while not new, has exploded over the last few years. The sweeping popularity of The Hunger Games has lead to authors and publishers scrambling to fill the new demand. As always, these new books are really mixed bag, but some deservedly shine out of the shelf as good stories and good representations of the genre. The Swipe Series is one of them. In many ways deeper and more complex than some of the more famous titles, Swipe and now Sneak present a perfect world that is built around a society where all individuals are “Marked.” The Mark is required for jobs, food, transportation, and medical care. Once a child turns thirteen, it is pretty much assumed they will Pledge and receive their Mark. One group of Markless called the Dust are trying to make a stand, and four friends must decide whether or not they will stand with them.

As the second book of the series, much of narrative split between the two factions of the Markless and DOME. Within the two groups Mr. Angler constantly shifts narrators, presenting the reader with a plethora of paradigms from which a clear picture begins to emerge. One of the things I love about this series is how noble the American Union sounds on the surface, and Sneak spends a fair amount of time showing why it seems so good on paper and why it is so terribly scary. Even if the plot wasn’t so gripping, I would read these books for the Dust alone. Honestly, a companion novella of their escapades would be amazing. There is a beautiful humor to their chaos as they fall just shy of Lord of the Flies.

Almost surprising for Dystopian book, Sneak is free of strong language and scenes of societal depravity. There is a great deal of peril, and the plot hangs on an understanding of politics and social structure so I would only recommend it for Junior High and up. Like many such novels, unless the reader enjoys the Dystopian style, Sneak would probably come across as just plain weird. It is the second book of the series, and I think it would be almost impossible to follow the plot and characters without reading the previous book, Swipe.

This is truly a classic dystopian series dealing with real humans who have made a choice to join the masses, becoming a cog in a huge machine and receive 'the Mark' or to stand up for the freedom to be an individual, making right or wrong decisions on their own, suffering the repercussions if need be.

From the first few pages, Sneak rocked. There was just so much excitement and danger from the start that I was immediately pulled in. And I hadn't even gotten to a part about Logan yet!

Sneak picks up a month after the end of Swipe, following his escape from his pledging ceremony, Logan has made it to New Chicago. At the end of Swipe Logan discovered that his sister Lily was alive and incarcerated in a facility named Acheron. All he knows is that Acheron is in Beacon and he has to get his sister out.

Sneak follows Logan’s journey, as well as the stories of Peck and the remaining Dust, Hailey and of course Erin. Erin betrayed Logan at the end of Swipe, and Sneak picks up with her facing her own troubles with DOME and her father.

All of these stories link together in the search for Logan, Lily and Acheron – as they go along they find more and more horrifying stories about Acheron and the truth is even worse than they can imagine.

Reading the reviews for Swipe, there was one comment that really resonated with me. The reviewer had highlighted the fact that the world in Swipe was something that is fairly rare in YA Dystopian stories these days – a genuine possibility of the future. Most books in the genre have a ‘big event’ or ‘big bad’ that caused all of the suffering (technology in Partials, EMP’s in ashes etc.), there’s really not anything to fight against in Swipe/Sneak other than human nature. Sure there are the marks but they have been implemented by humans, not by aliens or technology taking over. That’s what makes the Swipe world brilliantly compelling, it’s scarily realistic. The world is fascinating, Beacon is described beautifully and the complexity behind the river is riveting. There are the usual twists and turns, as there are two major revelations – one about Acheron and one about the marks, both of which are unexpected and throw the reader completely (in a good way!)

Now for the negatives (and the reason it only got 3 stars), the religious side to the book, yes I know it was published by Thomas Nelson, but that doesn't mo mean it has to be pushed quiet so much. Part of me thinks there is a religious theme running through the story (ala Narnia), but I’m not religious and don’t know the stories well enough to confirm if that’s true. But there is a lot of religious suggestion in the book, the symbols on the river, the book Logan’s reading, the oppression of all religion and subsequent secret churches and Pecks sudden conversion to the faith (sorry – not a spoiler, it’s a minor part in the book, I suspect it was more scene setting for the next book). There’s nothing wrong with a religious undertone, but in places it felt too forced upon the reader. This alone was not enough to reduce the book to three stars, the character development was however. Whilst the story was fast paced and very in-depth, you are left with a feeling that more was put into the world than into the characters. Logan is wet, why anyone would feel compelled to help him I don’t know, there is nothing to him, no depth no personality, Peck is equally as uninspiring, I struggle to understand why anyone would follow him – he doesn’t lead the Dust, they simply limp along behind him. Some work was done to discuss the Dust member’s history but it was done in a page and merely skimmed the surface, providing the reader not caring about their fates. The only relatable character is Erin, even then her story is just surface level, and I can’t tell you much about her – just her actions in the book.

So in summary, a good – not great- read. Swipe was better, but Sneak is worth a read. The bones of the story are good, the twists are fantastic and the reader does not anticipate them at all (or at least I didn’t) but more character development is needed for the series to be a serious contender in the already crowded genre.

We last left Logan on the run. And this story picks up there. Logan is working his way across the country toward the city of Beacon, in hopes of finding his sister Lily, who disappeared five years ago when she went in to receive her mark. There seem to be many more points of view in this book, though maybe it just felt that way. But the story is starting to get more complicated as more of the mysterious government is revealed.

This is a sequel to Evan Angler's last book, Swipe. I didn't find that out until after I finished reading the book (which, needless to say, happens a lot). Because of this, some parts of Sneak were a tad bit confusing, but it didn't take away from the incredible story of this sequel.
The characters were very interesting, the plot intriguing, but the author's writing style was sometimes hard to follow. Still, a very great read.

As you can imagine, there is a lot of chasing going on in this book. New characters are introduced, which means Logan is now exposed to a whole new level of risks of being betrayed and captured. I like that the action scenes are exciting and well-paced. I feel drawn to keep reading and before I know it, Logan is already meeting up with old acquaintances in the underground of the buildings in the Beacon City.

Unexpectedly, there is something going on towards the end of the book that I totally didn’t foresee and I was like, “whoa, this is so not something I would have even thought about” but I must say I like the twist as the plot is ingenious and amusing.

What I find really heartwarming is that although Logan is only thirteen years old, he demonstrates an unyielding determination when it comes to seeking the truth about the disappearance of his sister. His love for his sister is immeasurable and I felt choked up when he was almost killed on his way to reach Beacon City.

Brilliantly written, Sneak is well-thought-out, fun and thrilling. Since this is published as Christian fiction, the element of Christian faith is present. Personally, I like how the message of faith and freedom is handled in the book (although I must say that the message here is somewhat louder than when it was first presented in book one). If you welcome an action-packed series that is also thought-provoking, I’d suggest you get hold of a copy of the Swipe series. I think you may like it.

If Swipe was about the author introducing us about the whole being “marked” thing when they turned 13, well this one is about Logan going off to an adventure to look for his sister who supposedly wasn’t marked (when she was supposed to) and was thrown into some place where all the other unmarked who were supposed to be marked were. If Swipe was about the author introducing us about the whole being “marked” thing when they turned 13, well this one is about Logan going off to an adventure to look for his sister who supposedly wasn’t marked (when she was supposed to) and was thrown into some place where all the other unmarked who were supposed to be marked were. The question is where is she? Is she still alive? Or were they just rumors?

I am blown away. Sneak surprised me in numerous ways. I was not expecting for it to have so much twists because the first book, Swipe, was an okay book for me. I liked it but did not love it, but oh my goodness, this one was the complete opposite. I freakin loved it. The number one thing I loved about Sneak was that the author came up with so many interesting ideas and that the pacing was a lot better. It wasn’t slow in any of the parts, but the chapters were still super long. The chapters were still divided in sections by numbers which switched off to different perspectives. I think there were 3 or 4 perspectives, I forgot, but definitely more than two. It wasn’t confusing and I think is actually the reason of why this book was such a page turner for me! If it switched off to different perspectives, then you would want to know what happened to the other characters right? Then after you read that character’s perspective, you’re left wanting to know more of what happened to the other characters again, and so on.

I freakin loved the characters too! I enjoyed how we got to know more about Logan, Erin, Peck, and the rest of the Dust! I really think they’re mature for their age (they are 13 year olds I think) which was fun to read and wasn’t annoying. They weren’t whiny at all, and man were they risk takers! I know if I was 13 again and I was in their situation I probably would have just given up. I enjoyed how each character developed, grew, and changed. There were also some new characters, and Logan’s sister’s character is definitely to look out for. You’ll be shocked with her character! I want to put spoilers in this review so bad. Lol. Just kidding. Go read this book! I stayed up past 1a.m. and it was totally worth it. So much adventure and surprises; goodluck taking them in! From 3.5 stars (the rating I gave to Swipe) to 5 stars, thunder claps to Evan Angler! I definitely recommend this series to everyone.(less)

It's a good thing that I read the first book or I'm not sure I would have understood what all was going on as we revisit Logan and his friends in Sneak.

Logan has thus far avoided the Mark - just barely. Each book just gets better!

I was really excited to read this book and find out what would happen next to Logan, and I sure wasn't disappointed. In fact, I actually like Sneak way better than Swipe and I really liked that book!

Sneak is the follow up to Evan Angler's debut novel Swipe. I really enjoyed the first novel and Sneak did not disappoint. I thought that as far as Christian fiction goes this is a subtle attempt at sharing what comes after the Rapture. The comparison to being Matched meets Left Behind is fairly accurate although it lacks the deep romantic angel of Matched and the overt Christian message of Left Behind.

Sneak, I found, was a bit less subtle than Swipe in it's message, although I think a lot of younger non-Christians might miss some of the references. And there is no overly preachy tone. This is what I absolutely loved about Sneak (and Swipe). Angler manages to write about religion in a completely non-judgemental, non-preachy, non-pressuring way. The good guys don't all believe in the same thing, but they have the same end goal. Freedom. They want to be able to choose what they could believe in. Even better is that the bad guys are not all bad. One character in particular truly believes the Mark is the best thing and that the government only wants to help. Even as this person aides the government it's hard to be angry. Frustrated, yes, but not really angry.

This is a great sequel, but I do have to say that if you haven't read the first book, or haven't read it in a while, go and read it. There isn't much background poured into the opening chapters. Instead it's written with the assumption that you remember everything about what happened in Swipe. Character's aren't being reintroduced, and story lines are never rehashed. We are simply thrust right back in where we left off. This was good in the sense that there is no background dumping, but it does make it a little jarring to try to remember everything.

Overall,I think Sneak (and Swipe) would be great reads for younger male teens, regardless of their beliefs. There is action, adventure, and boys that actually act and think like boys - there's a scene where Logan is so pumped about finding and fixing up a bike that took me a moment to realize it was a bicycle, not a motorbike. I will definitely be checking out more from Angler (which considering the importance of rivers, fish, fishing, and captains to the story, I wonder if that's his real name!).

As dystopians go, Sneak doesn't have the most original or unusual of premises, but there's still quite a bit to like, some really good supporting characters, quite a few unexpected twists to the story, but most of all Angler's no nonsense approach to storytelling. The plot as a whole plays out as I expected, Logan and his friends on the run from the government, trying to rally the Marked but especially the Markless and save his sister locked up in a prison somewhere. What's different is that there are lots of points of view; a chapter might switch between different characters nine or ten times. I guess it's both good and bad, good because I really liked some of the supporting characters once I got to know them, simple things like Meg dropping a huge spider on Jo's head, but Angler also likes to build up suspense, putting one character in trouble, then switching to another character for a while. Kinda infuriating at times.

But that also means I liked these characters enough I really wanted to know what was happening to them too, I guess. Logan didn't really stand out much as the sort of savior character, but Erin, Hailey, and especially Logan's Grandma were really good. Erin, working for the government against Logan and his friends, I really like how she's trying to figure out where her loyalties lie as she spends more time with the Markless, and has to finally make her choice once she's confronted with the truth. Hailey, she and Erin are like on polar opposite sides, yet there are a few scenes that still show how similar they are despite their differences. And Logan's Grandma, way cool for a spunky older character, I really like how she surprised me here, played an inspiring role even if she really didn't do much.

Actually, I got the feeling this entire book was supposed to be inspiring, from all the people who stick their necks out and help Logan and his friends on their journey, to the Markless who stands out against the government when the time comes, even if, yes, a few of them don't have the guts to do it. It's all very believable. But the ending was also sort of a letdown, I get the message that Logan's really more of a symbol and the Markless can do really great things once they rally to the cause, but it just wasn't as epic as I'd hoped mass rallies and people power would be. And a few characters also draw inspiration from religion - yeah I think it's good to get a wide range, have different characters get their inspiration from different sources - but it's just sort of briefly mentioned, neither subtle nor powerful.

Even though the ending wasn't as good as I wanted, I still had fun reading this. And it does set up another sequel, nice because this series is getting good.(less)

Second books are tough, but Evan's got it down. In fact, those who enjoyed the first book will love this one. It keeps getting better and better. I wouldn't want to live in a society where you either get Marked or go on the run, but I really did love reading about Logan and his friends' adventures. The twists were brilliant, and I didn't want to ever put this book down until I'd figured out what was happening.

What a great second book to the Swipe series. Evan Angler has continued the story perfectly and we have been able to see more of the characters that were introduced in the first book. I really enjoy this future world, the politics and the kids that appear to be way smarter than all the Marked Adults!!

He seems to want to rule the world. He did it in a sneaky way where no one really thinks that’s what he wants. However, his plans seem to involve joining Europe, a key step in global domination. He hadn’t really appeared in the first two books, but I wonder if he would make an appearance in the third book of the series.

The plot is more intense this in this book then in the last. There are more moments that want you to hope for the best for Logan and his crew and hope he escapes. You also have moments where you can’t believe that Cylis, the leader of New America, would actually do that to his people. Out on his own, Logan is traveling to where he knows his sister is being kept. He has to learn fast that there is no one out there for him to trust besides “The dust” and Peck. Nowhere is safe for long, as the DOME is catching up to Logan. The plot gets more interesting as you learn about the River, a trail of safe houses for markless to travel on. It's similar to the Underground Railroad. That’s what Logan, Hailey, Dane, Peck and The dust use when they get split up on their way to Beacon. Beacon isn’t anything like what Logan expects it to be when they go to search for the place called Archeron.

Now that Logan is on his own, he is not only on watch for people from DOME, but he is also have to learn which markless he could trust and which he shouldn’t. Trusting new people is hard for anyone, and Logan learns that right away that he shouldn’t trust new people right away. Right now all that’s on Logan’s mind is being with his sister. He wants to save her no matter what, even when all of it seems hopeless to do. Logan is more brave in this book then in the first. He is willing to do anything when it comes to saving his sister, even if it means going into the heart of a militarily compound.

As for Erin, I’m disliking her more and more for her being on her fathers side, (who works for DOME) instead of the boy who had trusted her. She even turned in Hailey to her father, so that her father would leave her alone. I just don’t like her turning in her friends just like that. Though she soon realizes whose side she should be on. It made me change my whole view on her in just a few minutes as I continued to read the story. Erin even stays with the crew at the end, and even meets a fellow hacker named Shawn. Shawn is the person that lead her to Logan and the others in the first place.

Peck is known everywhere in the markless community. You learn in the first book that he is Daniel Peck who was Lily’s (Logan’s sister) friend. He’s popular in the markless community and where ever he goes people know him and follow him. The dust are people who he has saved and they look up to him. Even I’m loving his character as the story goes. He is fit to be the leader along side Logan the two of them makes a great team.

Hailey is a girl who is Dane’s and Logan’s friend since forever. Hailey was with the dust for a long time now following what Peck’s. She leaves her home in hopes to find Logan and she does. She’s a great friend, but she's involved in an unromantic love triangle. She likes Logan, who's uninterested in her, and Dane likes Hailey, but she doesn't like Dane. It’s all messed up for her, but she has one mission and that is to help get Logan to Beacon.

Dane was a bit annoying in the book. As I mentioned before, he likes Hailey and hates the fact that Hailey likes Logan and not himself. He hates it so much that he stops being friends with Logan for it. He acts jealous and a brat towards Logan, and finally decides to leave that group to stay in a markless village. I'm glad he did it. It caused too much unnecessary jealousy because Logan told Dane countless times that he doesn’t have that kind of feelings for Hailey, but Dane doesn’t listen.

I do feel that at the very ending of the book was a bit more rushed, but as long as there is a third book I’m fine with this type of rushed ending.
