In Moto Hagio's far future "They Were Eleven," students gather from different planets for the difficult entrance exams for an elite university, which culminates in a three-month test of endurance and ingenuity where groups of ten cadets are left alone in some risky situation. Our students, ten young humanoids, are stranded on a derelict ship which they must keep in orbit around a star, but when they arrive they discover that there are eleven of them; someone is an impostor or worse.

I got this from a friend, serialized in early Viz Media floppies. I was surprised by how much I liked it; lots of worldbuilding, interesting characters, and an unobtrusive translation.
