Nestes contos aconteceu-me isso várias vezes. Nenhum me deixou indiferente.

If Columbo had been a severe German criminal defense lawyer, he might have written a book like this. Guilt is the successor to Ferdinand von Schirach's brilliant Crime . Each book contains a collection of true crime (or "true defense") stories. His stories are about his clients, although how much is fiction and how much is fact is hard to tell. Guilt isn't as extraordinary as Crime, but it's still a compelling read. Both books circle around the ambiguous notion of guilt. Some of his characters a ...more

Uff, dat’s man barschen Tobak!

Published in English together with "Verbrechen" as "Crime and Guilt"

A short book of dark stories centered around the German justice system written by a defense attorney, supposedly a mix of fact and fiction. Written in a sparse, non-judgmental, highly controlled style, he lists the facts of each case, and then towards the end the narrator appears as the lawyer who tries to sort out the case as much as possible.

Since this isn't TV crime many cases are never "solved" or really finished - for exam

I almost stopped reading this book partway through the first story. Von Schirach's subject matter is unremittingly dark; these stories include rape, abuse, violence senseless and sadistic, and palpable despair. I was kept reading not only by the breathtaking precision of von Schirach's evocative prose, but, more importantly, by the steadiness of his compassion. As an author, he shows a keen eye for moments of beauty--even grace--in apparently hopeless situations. The ability of the law to enact ...more

Just one story was interesting for me, and it was too short.

From The New York Times Book Review By ADAM LIPTAK Published: April 6, 2012

Ferdinand von Schirach is both a German criminal defense lawyer and an exceptional prose stylist, as evidenced by his devastating new volume of stories, a sequel to a similar and even stronger collection called “Crime.” That book was a critical and commercial success in Germany and received fine notices when it was published here last year.
There’s a trick to many of von Schirach’s stories, one that works every time. A n

These are not so much short stories as anecdotes for a particularly grisly dinner party. They are glimpses through the curtains at the hidden motives of perpetrators, victims and the lookers on in tragedies large and small. They are very brief, sometimes disappointingly so (the whole book took no more than two and a half hours to read), but they are haunting, and enlightening if not exactly entertaining.

Just as I am traveling around Germany, I read in sequence these 2 criminal? novels, written by a German lawyer.

I got to read his first short story collection "Verbrechen (Crime and Guilt)" at one of my book clubs. I fell for his concise story telling style and the humanity thoughts hidden beyond the lines. "Schuld" is his second short story collection and every story is as good as his first book's ones. Either the readers get stunned or feel sad, every story is showing a dark side of the human b

Sometimes you can't sugar-coat things, or water them down, or put them eloquently. Sometimes you just have to say it, and be in-your-face and blunt. That's Guilt in a nutshell.

Guilt is a collection of short stories by an attorney. They aren't about the attorney, they're about the characters and the victims. They're about life, and consequences, and foolishness and regret, and why we do the things we do.

The thing about short stories is they're supposed to make you think, and what you leave out i

I quite enjoyed reading a bunch of quirky short stories for a change, with the over-riding theme of "guilt". In fact I'd go so far as to say that we're rather under-served with compilations like this. Short stories can offer a welcome respite after ploughing your way through a meaty novel, and that was the outcome for me. While the stories weren't too German-centric it was comfortable enough accommodating the geography anyway. The length of each "guilt" story varied a lot, from a number of pages ...more

Oh what a bad book this is! Was this really written by an advocate? A collection of random stories in which brutality plays the main part. No room for any sort of reflection left.

Ferdinand von Schirach debuted with a high-praised collection of stories that I really enjoyed reading. This volume is his second book, containing stories that look like leftovers from the first one. Most of the stories feel like B-sides rather than new material. Some of them are based around a great idea but remain undeveloped until the very end, others remain rudimental until the very end in every possible way. The only reason I gave this book three stars is because I liked the previous one th ...more

Laconic autopsies of crime. I had a feeling the quality of the stories varied, but I give four stars for the frugal style.

I need to re-read this one because the German level is too high for me. Therefore, I refrained from rating it.
