Scott Speer delivers a wholly different sort of angel story by combining the traditional paranormal fantasy with the glitz and glamour of celebrity culture. In Immortal City, angels are not just angels – they are the faces of brands, the models on billboards, the famous stars that make the news. There always have been a debate in support or against the statement that a celebrity can write or not, and most answers were used to be no, as we have previously witnessed some horrible piece came of out of celebrities’ unthinkable thoughts which doesn’t even falls in the category of literature. This time a celebrity came in field of young adult literature and conquers all conventional conception of that has been running around. Yes, I’m talking about Scott Speer and his YA incredible debut Immo...more

I don’t know why, but as I was reading this I got the distinct impression that it was written to that Foster the People song “Pumped Up Kicks” No joke. I loved the concept! I loved the characters! But...NO ONE PROOF READ THIS BOOK!!! There are so many grammar errors that whoever edited it needs to be fired! It is so distracting to have fragmented sentences and repetitive wording.
The story is awesome too but there are holes in it. (Spoiler alert)At the end there is a human who sells his soul to a demon(who they call a dark angel, confusing because it looks nothing like an angel)and this human kills angels. But all through out the book they say...more

In a world where you put the TV on, your bound to fall on some reality show and where real life heroes are made into over night celebs. Scott Speer gives his own take of the not so bright lights of this world with Immoral City and celebrity angels. Angels whom have fallen into the world of greed and bright lights, where everything is given to them on a whim of saving the lives of those who can afford it.
In this world there are those who could care less about angels and their celeb status. Mad...more
Well, when my uncle brought me this I was really excited, it looks amazing, and the description sounds pretty good. The book itself? Not so much. (Note: the book says "If you quote from this galley, please refer to the final printed book" but as the book isn't available until April, I know I'll forget to write the review then. So please take notice that my review is not of the final book.)

I really liked this book, but there was a thing that was a bit strange.
Immortal City is about a boy and a girl. The boy is called Jackson Godspeed and he's a prodigy angel. Every single girl wants to be with him. The girl in this story is called Maddy Montgomery. She studies hard at school and wants nothing to do with angels. She just wants to get out of LA, which is where the story takes place.

Wow. Okay--breath in, breath out.
Before Reading
I was a bit skeptical before reading this book. Mostly because I’d had some major late-downs with book lately (such as Switched), and partly because I don’t think I ever read an angel book that blew my mind away. So I entered the read…wary, unsure of what I was going to find, and mostly encouraged by the fact it was a group read on Goodreads.
Well, I said this once and I’ll say this again – Thank GOD for Goodreads group reads! (And that is still one...more

So, this was actually...pretty good! I've been looking forward to reading this book for a while now because it sounded really interesting and I'm happy I finally got to read it.
One thing that I really, really liked was the whole concept of Angels charging people for their services. I mean, we never think that if Angels were real that we'd have to pay them to help us since, you know, they're suppose to be guard us humans from the bad things. But no, that's not how things work in this book. Here,...more

Immortal City is definitely not your average angel book. Scott Speer does a fabulous job at creating a world unlike any I've read in YA angel lore.
Immortal City is filled with intrigue, corruption, and greed. Everyone is obsessed with Angels. They're on the covers of magazines, they're on reality TV shows, and most people want to be one of their lucky charges.
Angels are not the selfless creatures one would expect. In fact, Angels profit from saving people, and they even have their own version...more

THE PROS
Scott Speer brought a whole new concept for the word "ANGEL". These supernatural creatures that are always viewed as benevolent and celestial are depicted as elite beings engaging in earthly luxury, the glitz, the fashion and all that. And oh, saving people for a monetary cost. It was an intriguing idea and frankly for me, unique, which is bene.

THIS is an angel-book?! Are you f...... serious?!
After this book, I think Unearthly deserves an AWARD because it is so freaking good!
This book is a fail.

Angels revealed themselves and now they are making money with saving those who can pay them. TV Shows, Reality shows and Twitter posts about angels. Angels are celebrities and they enjoy their wealth and fame.

I am fine with authors who differ from usual definitions, but I really don't like authors who turn some of the religious or mythologic...more

This book was very intriguing because of how the Angels are the celebreties on Earth. The Angels live on top of money and luxary. Although there is a bigger priority for them to uphold. Saving the lifes of there protections is everything to them. Although things change when Jackson meets Maddy. Since the very first time they meet they had a spark of connection. I had seen this book among the selves of my local book-store, but I never was really interested in it until I ran across an ARC of it at an used book store. At first the price captured my eye, but then as I read the back cover I was mystified.

I admit, the minute I read the blurb for Immortal City I was intrigued...the idea of guardian angels protecting people for money is one of those ideas that stick in your head, and I couldn't wait to see how it panned out, but one of the biggest draws for me was the author. I mean, you see male writers all the time, but never in the urban fantasy/paranormal field-I can't even remember the last time I read and urban fantasy by a male author; I was beginning to think they didn't exist, so I was mor...more
Really good book about angels, with more appeal to them than just their heavenly features. They are also incorporated into modern society, with people knowing about their identities. They're considered normal in the world, although they are praised more due to their ability to save people, and their beauty.
So this ordinary girl named Maddy, average grades and a bit of a social outcast, gets attracted on by the most wanted angel Jackson, and she ultimately falls for him too. Only their love isn't...more

Summary: Angels are real. They are also celebrities. Who save peoples’ lives for money. Girl falls in love with arrogant angel boy. DRAMA.

Actually, that's a lie.
SEE: Sweet Evil series. I flipped past the first three pages and the voice was like "Oh my god, he is so hot with a capital H-O-T!!". No joke, she actually said something like that and shat herself over how beautiful the dude was....more

[3.5 stars] Scott Speers debut novel Immortal City is a fun read with mystery, drama, and romance!
In Immortal City, Angels are worshiped by 'ordinary' people and are considered celebrities. They provide a pay-and-save service to the rich which basically entails having a Guardian Angel ready to save and protect them when in they're danger. It's not uncommon to find people squealing over a good save they saw on SaveTube or swooning over Jackson Godspeed the hottest Angel in Immortal City.

4.5 stars! I was pretty excited to start this series…you know why: I LOVE ANGELS :) This isn’t your typical angel book though, in this novel angels are out in the open and treated like celebrities with their Angel TV and celebrity magazines. WOW. What a concept. A very original story. As someone who loves Angel stories, this book was very well done. The Angel genre has been getting repetitive as of late, so I was wary of reading this book. My expectations weren't at all high. However, after reading it I can say I'm glad I took a chance. the concept of Angel being guardians for money is a really interesting one. This book is not at all like the other angel book you may have read. (ie. Halo, Hush, Hush, Fallen.)The author really took...more
This was a good book. Not wow, not amazing, but good. Easy to read and well-paced. If you treat it like a YA novel targeted (and I mean, quite young) then your expectations will be well-met. I think I was expecting it to be a bit more like the Guild Hunter series, so perhaps that's why it wasn't as wow for me.
The cons: the pity party the author created for Maddy got a little annoying. I get that she's really poor, that her parents are dead, that she can't stand the angelstruck people around her...more

Honestly, I'm kind of embarrassed to admit to having read this. I've read a lot of trash this year, but this book was seriously terrible. I was intrigued by the premise: guardian angels have "come out" to the world, and instead of performing anonymous miracles they now provide paid protection. After the first couple of chapters I also got the impression it was going to be a social commentary on how our culture is obsessed with celebrities.

This book caught me at the end of my book vacation. It was just sitting there on a library trolley, and I was in a rush to pick out a book, so I thought, yeah, why not?
It didn't look like the many other books I'd read previously - no random girl in a sweeping ball-gown on the cover, no swirls or promises of a girl in a small town meeting a supernatural hot guy - it seemed more 'normal', more realistic.
I hadn't read the blurb, and I'd assumed it was a book for guys because of the less feminine...more

Maddy Montgomery isn’t interested in the angels that look over Angel City and protect its richer inhabitants. She doesn’t watch the shows, read the gossip blogs or pay any attention to anything angel orientated. But when Jackson Godspeed, an up and coming angel that the whole world has its eye on, blows into Maddy’s life, she has no choice but pay attention.

“You’re right,” Jacks said. “You’re not part of my world. You’re not one of those girls. And maybe that’s why.”
“Why what?”
“Why I can’t stop thinking about you.”
Maddy rolled her eyes. “Guys like you don’t say that to girls like me.”
“I’ve never said that to anyone, actually,” Jacks corrected. “In fact, I’ve never done anything like this before.” He let out a little laugh. “How am I doing?”
He swallowed hard, trying to push down his nervousness. He was astonished to realize he was nervous. Somehow being around Maddy just put him in a different space. Jacks felt so present.
Maddy stared at him, letting the anger and frustration surge through her.
“Why are you doing this to me?” she asked finally.
He paused, considering.
“I’m being honest. I know you may not believe me. But I haven’t been able to not think about you. When we were in the back at the restaurant, and . . .” Jacks’s voice trailed off, his face coloring. “I still feel terrible about what I did. I lied to you and, even though I had good reasons for it, it was wrong of me.”
Maddy studied him. Was he telling the truth?
Jacks smiled. “I mean this in the best possible way: I’m not going to leave you alone until you let me make it up to you. I’m serious. I’ll be here every night. You might as well get me some pajamas and a toothbrush.”
Despite her best efforts not to, Maddy laughed. She looked at Jacks and could see the faintest twinkle of light in his eyes.
“So what you’re saying is that I should just give in and let you make it up to me. Otherwise you’ll be tormenting me like this for the rest of my life?”
“Pretty much. Yeah.”
“Well.” She sighed. “What do you have in mind?”
“Come fly with me.”
