One Moment by Kristina McBride is a story of the unfairness of life; how things are cut short, how things are not what they seem, how things are stolen, changed, a path diverted in a blink.
Maggie and her friends are at the gorge. Maggie and her boyfriend Joey are at the top of the cliff, about to jump off -- then everything goes blank. Maggie opens her eyes and Adam is urging her out from the bush she's hidden herself behind. There is screaming, sirens, and blood. Joey is dead. The story goes o...more

One Moment by Kristina McBride is set in Blue Springs, Ohio. Maggie Reynolds is sixteen years old and is looking forward to spending summer with her boyfriend of one and a half years, Joey, and their close friends Adam, Paul, Shannon and Tanna. The six of them have been the best of friends for years. They enjoy spending their time at the Jumping Hole but Maggie never jumps until one day Joey convinces her to jump with him. And then tragedy strikes - Joey dies from the fall while Maggie is still...more
Dark, atmospheric and utterly compelling, One Moment by Kristina McBride is sure to appeal to readers who like contemporary and the exploration of human nature through literature. While it doesn’t bring anything new or unpredictable to the table, One Moment sets itself apart in the smooth way the prose flows and gradually brings to light what is the heart of the novel. The friendships and the way they are affected by the death of one of the integral members of their group, a person who was more...more

It's an interesting read, yet I’m still struggling to put into words exactly which parts worked and which ones didn’t. With six people who’ve lived in each others’ pockets it’s not shock how, in essence, they’re a unit. Sure, a couple of them were closer to others but it’s also this fact that made for a more complicated group dynamic. Their core seemed to be Joey though. Wild… crazy…beautiful, they all said, but what else was there to him? That it takes tragedy for them to all open up, open...more

“What if it's as simple as one moment? One tiny thing, like that kiss on the rocks? What if I'd kissed him a little longer? Would he be alive right now? Or what if I'd stayed with him Friday night, what if I'd been with him… wherever he was?”
My Thoughts:
ONE MOMENT is a light and beautifully written book that keeps you hooked but also puts into perspective the emotions and feelings of losing someone.

I really, really loved One Moment.
I've not been reading as many contemporary novels lately because I've been having trouble finding one that piqued my interest. So many just seem predictable or redundant. One Moment is neither of those things. It's emotional and fresh; just what I needed to get back into this genre again.
It's not too hard to guess what Joey had been up to before he died, but this isn't something that detracts from the story at all. In this book's case, I'd say it's...more

One Moment was a very compelling and interesting story, with a really great theme: death. However, there were things I didn’t like about this book, like the main character and how predictable everything was.
I really loved the concept of One Moment. Death is always such a hard subject to talk about, and I love how the author portrayed it in this book. There’s always questions that a person leaves behind, secrets that they never told. This was a big part of the book, as Mag...more

How well can you really know someone? That is the question Maggie asks herself time and time again. As all the secrets and lies told by the someone she trusted entirely come out after his death. How well can you really know someone? Does it matter? After they are gone from this world, do the secrets and lies change anything? Do they change everything?
Those are the questions that kept my head in One Moment, nonstop, until I read the very last word.

The first word that comes to mind after reading this book is "sweet." This book is really a very sweet and poignant journey through grief. The main protagonist, Maggie, deals with the loss of her boyfriend but beyond that, the loss of perfect memories that are tainted when she learns some unexpected truths about their relationship. This book is her journey through their relationship with all of the intensity that only a teenage first-love can have. It is her journey through the trials of friends...more

It's hard to put into words how well versed "One Moment" is for a coming of age/coming to terms summer story. It's a novel of grief over a tragic death, with six friends dealing with the aftermath of a cliff diving venture gone horribly wrong. In the center of it all, in the leading perspective point, is Maggie, Joey's girlfriend. She has to pick up the pieces of her fragmented memory to know what happened on the day her boyfriend died, and eventually come to terms with the healing process and a...more

One Moment, was fantastic in its start, and by all accounts deliver on a great story that any reader can enjoy. Maggie's life was irrecoverably changed simply put in One Moment. Joey, Maggie's boyfriend was dead and this once instance changed Maggie's and her friend's lives forever. Lies unfold, relationships were questioned and foundations of friendship shaken and most of all new unforeseen relationships were formed amidst tragedy (Adam's character was the silent yet powerful character that had...more

Maggie remembered climbing the trail with Joey, her perfect boyfriend of 2 years. despite her fear of heights, she decided that she was going to dive off the cliff with Joey, into the Jumping Hole filled with water while avoiding the ledge. but everything went wrong when they reached the cliff, with Joey ended up dead on the ledge and her cowering behind the trees on the...more

Recommends it for:
Anyone and Everyone
The book begins with Maggie at a clifftop with her boyfriend and her friends. In the next moments, he's dead. She's the last person to see him, but she can't remember what happened. While she struggles to find the memories she desperately needs, she learns the secrets of her boyfriend's past that she has overlooked.

Okay finished this book last night, just so that I could get it out of my way. And I will admit to skipping pages, and looking for flashbacks, or just dialogue.
Summary:
Meghan was the only one on top of that cliff with Joey when he died. She remembers climbing to the top, and sharing that kiss, but after that her memories are blocked, and she can’t remember anything. Everyone feels bad for her and tries to console her, and through that she learns more, especially about one person in particular: A...more

The first half of this book was so gut wrenching for me. You could feel the emotion coming off the page. I read this book in a day and could not put it down. I had to know how she dealt with this. I was surprised with some of it.
I for one couldn't stand Shannon. Yes, you lost Joey too. However, you were sleeping with your best friends boyfriend for almost a year. That is not okay. The fact that she tried to pull the sympathy card made me so mad. But I could see how she would feel doubly bad, at...more

My thoughts:
I honestly don't have much about One Moment.
Which disappoints me!
I started this book with such high expectations.
It's not like it was awful and it was torture to read everyday or anything.
No.
It just felt like I've read this story before...
I didn't feel like there was really any originality to it.
The characters were kind of bland, and the story line was just a typical depressing summer novels about a coming of age girl who finds her strength and love along the way.

"This was supposed to be the best summer of Maggie's life. Now it's the one she'd do anything to forget.”
Maggie remembers hanging out at the gorge with her closest friends after a blowout party. She remembers climbing the trail with her perfect boyfriend, Joey. She remembers that last kiss, soft, lingering, and meant to reassure her. So why can't she remember what happened in the moment before they were supposed to dive? Why was she left cowering at the top of the cliff, while Joey floate...more

The first time I saw this book, I thought I was going to be up for a mystery. That kind of story where there were clues everywhere and when the truth is finally revealed, your mouth will just hang open for a few seconds and you had to re-read that part because you can’t believe it just happened and you’ll hit yourself (okay, maybe not really) because you thought you were so stupid to miss that one.

One Moment is one of those novels that will keep you entertained throughout your reading time even if you already know (somehow) what's gonna happen. It's not at all boring to read though the mystery is quite predictable for me. I don't know with you guys but I already have suspicions by the way the characters were described! I don't know. I just had a feeling about them. It's about the way they act around the first part of the story th...more

The Low-Down: The blurb is pretty telling in and of itself. After a long night of partying hard, the gang goes...more

I have not been able to stop turning the pages of this book ...
First oppressed by the heavy atmosphere revolving around the tragic death of a young man, full of life, then anxious to learn the revelations.
The author perfectly balanced the emotions. I had a heavy heart as if I was part of the band and I had just lost Joey. Kristina McBride was able to easily manipulate me.

What first attracted me to this book was the plot. I’m normally not a fan of mystery/suspense but something about this book pulled me in, I wanted to know how everything would play out.

I was hooked when I heard the premise of the story - Maggie’s boyfriend Joey falls to his death and she can’t remember it. And she knows she’s not being told the truth. With everyone pushing for answers, will she remember? Or will she let herself forget?
I thought the plot fairly obvious, but nonetheless the mystery slowly reveals the pieces of the puzzle. I think it’s not just the puzzle of his death, but the puzzle that are friends. When a piece goes missing, the puzzle is no longer complete –...more

I liked the overall premise of the book but what it lacked for me was the element of surprise or unexpected. I didn't read the summary before starting the book, but I still knew exactly what was going to happen by the first chapter. I actually put my kindle down, looked over at Luke, and said I'm reading this book and I think this, this, and this is going to happen. And sure enough I was spot on when I finished it.

I requested this from NetGalley as I kind of liked the cover and the blurb had me intrigued. After reading the book, I'm in two minds as to how I felt about it. On the one hand, I read this book out in the sun with my toes wiggling in the grass. It was an easy read that was just right for a lazy nearly-summer's day.
On the other hand, I felt that this book was a little on the thin side. The characters were a bit too familiar and it was fairly obvious from the beginning exactly how the story was...more
