I saw One Moment on Netgalley and I thought the cover looked good and it's contemp YA, so I requested it. I hadn't read much about it so I went in not knowing what was about to happen. Joey's death occurs right at the start of the book and then we're left watching Maggie piece together the events before he jumped.

Maggie had loved Joey for a long time but due to them all being friends, she never acted upon her feelings. Then a year and a half ago, Joey invited her out on her own, he took her on a perfect first date and they had been dating ever since. Lately he'd been pressuring her to have sex with him but she kept saying no as she wasn't ready. In a week, his family would be away and she'd planned a special night for the two of them but she was keeping it a surprise. On the day he died, she noticed a few little things that didn't add up and those clues as well as the snippets of her memory, that slowly return, help her to finally figure out what Joey was up to.

The rest of the friends were mostly background characters, except for Shannon, who really stood out and not for good reasons. She's quite abrupt and not subtle at all and it was clear she had a problem with Maggie.

It was obvious to me from the very beginning what was going on with Joey so the fact that it took Maggie so long to figure out was a little frustrating. I also thought my initial guess might be too obvious and I was prepared for it to be something really serious, but it wasn't.

I think One Moment would be appreciated by teens, who perhaps are dealing with something similar to what Maggie finds out was going on. One Moment is a sweet and sad story of a girl's first love and how blurry the lines between friends can become.(less)

It's an interesting read, yet I’m still struggling to put into words exactly which parts worked and which ones didn’t. With six people who’ve lived in each others’ pockets it’s not shock how, in essence, they’re a unit. The reactions were messy. And I liked it.

Add the complication of her not knowing to the slow process of her picking up the clues… then add both those to her inevitably piecing things together. And almost not wanting to have done so. Well, I won’t say I that enjoyed it… but it all had me engrossed. Her knowing one thing then having that same fact at odds with what she knew/felt… it felt right to me. Then compound her feelings on things being disconnected or her feelings that what she knew wasn’t whole to begin with, with her friends reacting in their own way… because like her, they too got left behind.

It’s the aftermath, the reactions of each member of the group that had me glued to ONE MOMENT. That each of them reacted the way they did because there was this big secret, made each of them less “bad,” more real. See, they’re not just caricatures of the cheater or the best friend or he boy who’s always there. Take Shannon. Her role from the get seemed a means to contrast her to Maggie. It became a lot easier to like Maggie, given how up front “bitchy” the other girl could be. “She’s a bitch, but that’s why we love her, right? They all say it; they all think it… but she’s not that at all. Sure, what’s done is a sad thing, but Shannon’s reactions too made sense. It’s Adam’s particular drama that I felt unnecessary. Why I wonder the need to insert a romantic element? But him dealing with losing his friend, then seeing that friend for who he really was… as well as him wanting some things he couldn’t have made him interesting.

I really, really loved One Moment.

I've not been reading as many contemporary novels lately because I've been having trouble finding one that piqued my interest. So many just seem predictable or redundant. One Moment is neither of those things. It's emotional and fresh; just what I needed to get back into this genre again.

The first word that comes to mind after reading this book is "sweet." This book is really a very sweet and poignant journey through grief. It's hard to put into words how well versed "One Moment" is for a coming of age/coming to terms summer story. It's a novel of grief over a tragic death, with six friends dealing with the aftermath of a cliff diving venture gone horribly wrong. In the center of it all, in the leading perspective point, is Maggie, Joey's girlfriend. It's a novel of grief over a tragic death, with six friends dealing with the aftermath of a cliff diving venture gone horribly wrong. In the center of it all, in the leading perspective point, is Maggie, Joey's girlfriend. She has to pick up the pieces of her fragmented memory to know what happened on the day her boyfriend died, and eventually come to terms with the healing process and all that entails.

I felt the story had a bit of a slice of life feel with the way it moved between memories, the present day, and the puzzle pieces leading up to the truth surrounding Joey not being the person that they all remembered him to be. The initial point has the six friends reflecting upon him in the wake of his tragic, early demise, but when the emotions go deeper, the sentiments run much different than what their outer perceptions reveal. I liked how McBride focuses on each of the teen voices and emotional ties in this story. You get a sense of who Maggie, Adam, Christina, and the others are in their interactions with each other and how the dynamic runs in each scene, as well as their respective roles in some jarring conflicts. They're real teens with very real issues in the events surrounding them, different ways of handling their grief, as well as witholding information that could be vital to the understanding surrounding Joey's death. Granted, it takes some time getting to the heart of the matter, but the payoff is worth every piece putting together the complete picture of the matter.

I think after a certain point, I knew what it would lead to, and I felt the story flow could've been slightly smoother, but I liked the tone and the overarching story, especially considering Maggie's growth from the events and finding a way to move foward in the aftermath. The growth I think gave a different dimension to the novel than just the reveal allowed. Maggie ends up playing a role where she not only suffers through the blows that the truth hands her, but she ends up reaching out to make amends and walking in a measure to move forward in her life. I think there will be many people - teens, adults - who will find something to like in this story for what it offers, as well as be drawn in with the strength of McBride's writing.

I definitely hope to check into more of her writing in the future to see what McBride has to offer.

One Moment is about a girl, Maggie, who witnesses the death of her boyfriend of almost two years. Maggie and Joey, the boyfriend, joined their four friends, Adam, Tanna, Pete and Shannon, spending a nice, warm day during Memorial Day weekend by a gorge local to their town of Blue Ridge, Ohio. They all take turns jumping from a the falls, except Maggie, who has an extreme fear of heights. Joey convinces her to jump with him, but somehow he ends up falling and crushing his skull and Maggie is found hiding in the bushes at the top of the falls. She is unable to remember anything that happened. The aftermath of Joey's death leaves the five friends reeling and struggling to stay together. All the while, Maggie battles her own personal struggle, to remember why she didn't jump and how Joey didn't make the jump. As the story continues, secrets are revealed, some friendships are tested, while others are broken.

The "shocker" in this book was pretty obvious from the beginning, but I didn't let that stop me from reading and I'm very glad I continued because this was wonderful! Even though the major twist in the story was clear, the plot was new and original. The setting was projected as gorgeous, which Ohio really is gorgeous (if you look in the right places).

This story has so much drama! It hurt my heart. I must be a masochist because I really, really enjoyed it! One Moment has suspense, drama, mystery and even a bit of romance. It's a great book for fans of young adult dramas like myself.

The prose was emotional and captivating. Reading from Maggie's perspective had me in tears more often than not. It had an almost lyrical quality to it. One Moment was a fast read and pretty short. I read it in one sitting, which is happening very often lately. Non-stop in a couple of hours means I seriously enjoyed it. I really recommend this book! And it won't be the last Kristina McBride book that I read!(less)

The first half of this book was so gut wrenching for me. You could feel the emotion coming off the page. I read this book in a day and could not put it down. I had to know how she dealt with this. I was surprised with some of it.

The first time I saw this book, I thought I was going to be up for a mystery. The way the clues were given for the mystery to be revealed was done well. I asolutely love Kristina McBride's writing. I'm excited to read her next novels.

I actually loved the premise of the story. Being in Maggie's shoes is definitely a depressing thing. But I loved how she was able to cope with everything around her. Though sometimes, I hate how clueless she is. Or sometimes, I pity her. The people around her just seems so annoying sometimes. But I guess, that's just her. She's so innocent to the point that even when something is already laid in front of her, she can't get a thing.

I definitely loved the friendship of the six! Even though it sounds too good to be true, I guess they do not know one another that well. They spend a lot of good times together, right? But I never think they spent some down moments wherein they could have test their friendship. Not until Joey's death, of course and at the night of that party. All of their memories seem to be happy happy all the time! And I guess that is impossible or so I thought. But I loved them together. Well, minus Joey when he died, I still loved the five of them. I mean, their friendship seems so important to each of them that they don't want anyone to be aloof. They want to get through Joey's death together as much as possible.

The only thing I didn't really like is the last part of the story. When the mystery was revealed, it seemed like the story went on to another focus. That's what I felt. The ending itself is quite disappointing for me. I just didn't really feel that that was the necessary ending. I'm not saying I know the necessary one! It's just that, I didn't feel it to be a good ending. Though I had the feeling that the ending is pertaining to the meaning of the title. You know, like One Moment can actually lead to another One Moment and so on and so forth. Like, kind of fate or destiny?

As a whole, I still liked the story. It kept me reading and reading until I found out that my guesses were true. I liked how it kept me entertained. With a really good intense mystery and a bunch of good characters, One Moment will keep you wanting for more.(less)

I have not been able to stop turning the pages of this book ...
First oppressed by the heavy atmosphere revolving around the tragic death of a young man, full of life, then anxious to learn the revelations.

The author perfectly balanced the emotions. I had a heavy heart as if I was part of the band and I had just lost Joey. Kristina McBride was able to easily manipulate me.

What first attracted me to this book was the plot. I’m normally not a fan of mystery/suspense but something about this book pulled me in, I wanted to know how everything would play out.

I was super excited to read this one because I had really enjoyed Kristina’s first book for young adults and I think she is a very good writer. The plot line of One Moment sounded thrilling and I was curious about the events leading up to Joey’s demise. I had a feeling that this book wouldn’t let me down since I had such high hopes. I also like the how simple the cover art is, but it’s still eye-catching.

First 50 Pages: The plot line holds a lot of suspense and it most definitely had me hooked from the beginning. Maggie’s memories are very sporadic and so you never knew when you were going to be given another piece to the puzzle. I think somewhere around halfway through One Moment, I had guessed what was going to happen and by the end, I was a least partially correct. I wouldn’t say that this book is predictable, but if you are clever enough you can figure it out. There are clues everywhere, maybe a little bit too much in my opinion after I’ve had some time to reflect. I’d also like to say that Kristina McBride’s writing had improved even further with this book, especially with character development. She knows how to write a good story and keep her readers interested and entertained.

Characters & Plot: The plot starts off fairly simple and becomes more complicated as book progresses. The story follows our teenage protagonist, Maggie, as she struggles to figure out how exactly how her boyfriend Joey died, even though she witnessed the tragedy. Maggie doesn’t remember anything that happened, on the exception of the events leading up to Joey’s demise. In order for her to move on and come to terms with his death, she must remember what happened. It’s a complete struggle for her to remember and it doesn’t get easier as she begins to dig around. Maggie thought that she knew Joey so well before he died, but as the story continues, she uncovers some unexpected secrets that Joey had. What is worse is that everyone else seemed to know his secrets except for her.

I’ll admit that One Moment was kind of a depressing read even though I liked how everything turned out in the end. One thing that made it more enjoyable was Maggie as a character. I absolutely loved her! She is very sweet and I think everyone who reads this book will become very attached to her. She can come off as being very naïve, especially when the secrets start to pour out, but she is an amazing character who had been through so much for being so young. Some of Maggie’s friends were pretty cool as well, especially Adam and Tanna. I can’t talk too much more about Maggie’s other friends without giving away the whole plot line. I can say that Joey and Shannon are very complicated characters (Joey is obviously more complicated than the rest) and I pretty much hated Shannon. I had a hard time finding any redeeming qualities about her and I tried so hard to like her, but I couldn’t.

Final Thoughts: I had a ton of emotions rolling through while I read One Moment. I don’t think I’ve been so personally invested in a story like I was with this book in a very long time. It just goes to show how fantastic the author is! This is a story about young love and the realization that people can and do keep secrets. I’m happy with the way everything played out and I liked the ending of this book very much. One Moment is an awesome contemporary read and I would highly recommend it to fans of the genre and to people who are struggling with the loss of a loved one. (less)

I liked the overall premise of the book but what it lacked for me was the element of surprise or unexpected. I didn't read the summary before starting the book, but I still knew exactly what was going to happen by the first chapter. I actually put my kindle down, looked over at Luke, and said I'm reading this book and I think this, this, and this is going to happen. And sure enough I was spot on when I finished it.

I requested this from NetGalley as I kind of liked the cover and the blurb had me intrigued. After reading the book, I'm in two minds as to how I felt about it.
