This is a beautifully written, easy to read novel that will suck you in from the very start. Tears of a Phoenix tells the touching story of Jed- a prisoner with a history of violence, who begins the road to healing himself, letting go of the past and working to make a better future, and making himself a better man, through psychological, spiritual and emotional understanding.
Wonderfully told through Jed's voice, this simple tale is multi-layered and expertly constructed, as it builds up Jed's hi

This brilliant novel captivated me from the word go, pulling me headlong into the sordid life and troubled mind of a life-term prisoner. The story begins with a knife-blade murder and the near-death of the protagonist – and a journey into a mysterious astral realm. With vibrant first-person writing flowing like rushing rapids through a rocky riverbed, Helen Noble’s skillful word-weave seduced me completely, and dragged me, spellbound and fascinated, out of the astral plane and into a frightening ...more

This fictional book has a compelling story - with many messages in it. This is a story of a young man in prison, exploring his childhood years of abuse and neglect, his impulsive nature, his belief system, and so on. But, mostly it is a story of hope - no matter what life has handed a person, it is possible to heal, making new choices and forging a life of integrity. I especially enjoyed how this author explored spiritual and ancestry connections as a path to healing - as well as needing support ...more

This debut novel is a moving and rewarding story. The characters are very real especially the main-man Jed.
His time in prison and how he finally reflects on his actions and feelings are deeply discussed with no antipathy towards him.
A great description involving some of the 'behind the scenes' help that the prison service provides towards rehabilation is covered.
A very pleasant read.

Jed, what a character! I could feel him breathing next to me, he was so real. Then I thought, but this book is written by a woman, how did she get into the mind of a young black male from Ghana heritage, growing up in the violence of an inner city, with seemingly no hope for his future away from crime. So I looked her up and found that she had experience working in the prison system, had probably seen far too many of these hopeless young and not so young men going round in a cycle of self abuse, ...more

Helen writes from the heart to engage the mind and assuage the soul. Her writing reflects her interest in the darker aspects of the human psyche and the resilience of the human spirit.
