I loved Cornelia Funke's Inkheart books and was a bit disappointed by the first Reckless book. I liked it but something seemed missing. I just finished the second book and liked it much more. The story continues where the first book left off. Jacob tries to find a way to counter the fairy curse that will kill him if he doesn't succeed. He is accompanied by the shapeshifter Fox. After every other measure Jacob knows of and tries fails to help against the curse, his last option is a magical crossbow that may save his life. But to find the crossbow Jacob first has to find three other objects that will reveal the crossbow. His search is made even more difficult by the fact that another treasure-hunter wants to find the crossbow and is determined to beat Jacob.

In this book Cornelia Funke shows again how much imagination she has. The world she created behind the mirrors is based on our own and there are many fairy tale elements to be found throughout the story. This doesn't prevent Funke from creating her very own world with vivid characters. I enjoyed every sentence of this book.

Rainer Strecker read the German audiobook. As usual he does a great job with it.

Ich war begeistert von Cornelia Funkes Tintenherz-Büchern. Von dem ersten Buch in der neuen Reihe mit Jacob Reckless war ich jedoch eher enttäuscht. Ich fand es ganz nett, jedoch hat etwas von dem Zauber gefehlt, der mit bei Funkes Tintenwelt so gefesselt hat. Jetzt habe ich auch das zweite Buch in der neuen Reihe als Hörbuch gehört und muss sagen, dass dieses mir besser gefällt als der erste Band.

Die Geschichte setzt dort ein, wo der erste Band aufgehört hat. Zwar ist es Jacob gelungen, seinen Bruder will von dem Feen-Fluch zu befreien, der ihm eine steinerne Haut beschehrt hatte, doch dafür ist nun Jacob verflucht. Die Motte der Fee sitzt auf seiner Brust und wenn sie ihn vier mal gebissen hat, bedeutet dies Jacobs Tod. Deswegen setzt Jacob alles daran eine Möglichkeit zu finden um den Fluch zu brechen. Doch alle Jacob bekannten Mittel schlagen fehl.

Der einzige Hoffnungsschimmer, der ihm noch bleibt, besteht in einer magischen Armbrust, nämlich die Armbrust von Giesmund dem Hexenschlächter. Die Armbrust dieses Magiers soll ganz besondere Eigenschaften besitzen: Sie ist dazu in der Lage mit nur einem Schuss ganze Armeen zu vernichten. Doch wenn sie aus Liebe abgeschossen wird, so soll sie auch dazu in der Lage sein das Leben eines zum Tode verdammten zu retten.

Also macht Jacob sich auf die Suche nach der Armbrust. An seiner Seite die Gestaltwandlerin Fuchs. Um die Armbrust zu finden müssen sie Giesmunds Hand, Herz und Kopf finden und mit seinem Körper wieder vereinen, wodurch Giesmunds Schloss erscheinen soll, in dem sich die Armbrust befindet. Erschwert wird ihre Suche dadurch, dass ein weiterer Schatzjäger auf der Suche danach ist, nämlich ein Goyle, der es sich in den Kopf gesetzt hat Jacob dieses Mal zu schlagen um so zu beweisen, dass er der bessere Schatzjäger ist.

Mit diesem Buch zeigt Cornelia Funke erneut wie viel Fantasie sie hat und wie magisch ihre Worte sein können. Die von ihr geschaffene Welt hinter den Spiegeln ähnelt zwar der unseren in erstaunlicher Weise, doch sind dort Märchenelemente verstreut und geradezu alltäglich. Trotz dieser Anleihen in der realen Welt und bei bekannten Märchen gelingt es Funke ihre ganz eigene Welt zu erschaffen mit lebhaften Charakteren. Von diesem zweiten Band der Serie habe ich jeden Satz genossen.

Wie die anderen Bücher von Cornelia Funke liest auch dieses Buch wieder Rainer Strecker und liefert dabei einen ausgezeichneten Job ab. Zwar lässt es sich nach mehreren Büchern nicht vermeiden, dass Strecker gelegentlich mal "Stimmen" aus anderen Bücher wieder verwendet, so hat meine Mutter zwischendrin bemerkt, dass einer der Goyles klingt wie der Natternkopf in der Tintenwelt, doch tut dies dem Buch keinen Abbruch und nimmt ihm auch nicht seine Individualität. Rainer Strecker gehört zweifellos zu den besten deutschen Hörbuchsprechern, die sich finden lassen.(less)

So...middle books generally disappoint, but I was really hoping this one wouldn't. It did.

I loved Reckless, it was everything I've come to expect from a Funke book and I started this one with high expectations that the magical feeling would continue. I'm honestly not sure why it didn't. Maybe it was the secondary viewpoint of the other treasure hunter?

FEARLESS is a fast-paced adventure that will appeal to fantasy lovers of all ages. Cornelia Funke has developed a world that runs on objects of fairytale legend, a world in crisis because the Goyl are conquering all the human kingdoms and humans are used to being the dominant species. It's a world were a person can make a career of hunting for objects of legend and lore, like Jacob, his companion Fox, and their competitor the Bastard. (Er, there is that drawback if you're going to pass FEARLESS on to a younger reader. At least, I remember my mom disliking the world "bastard" being at the beginning of Diablo when my sister and I played it way back when.)

There is a romantic storyline is FEARLESS and it is very important to the novel. Fox's feelings for Jacob are part of what make her so loyal to him, even when he's a jerk or acting stupid, and it isn't easy for her to know his death is imminent. But the romance rarely takes priority because it would slow the novel down and above all else FEARLESS is a race against time.

I liked that the Bastard, Nerron, wasn't as evil as the epithet he's known by might suggest. It's a very literal name, and while he makes many threats, he tends not to follow through. (Even the bad bad guys notice he's not as bloodthirsty as he wants to be.) It is one of the aspects of the Mirrorworld series that I really like, that the Goyl aren't plain evil. They're often less treacherous than their human counterparts and they're given individual motivations and goals. I would've liked to have learned more about Nerron, but FEARLESS is Jacob's story in the end.

There is a massive hook at the end of FEARLESS for the next book in the series. I'm excited to see what adventure Jacob and Fox will embark upon next. The Mirrorworld is a very interesting place and I love learning more about it as Jacob and Fox quest. These books aren't complex, but they are wonderful stories. (less)

My Thoughts:Wow. This book was brilliant. Funke weaves each vivid detail together with delicacy, resulting in the reader being left stunned. Oh, how I want to visit the Mirrorworld! Each word painted a picture in my mind and left me craving more. Magical. This story was magical.

"Lebendige Schatten" ist der zweite Band der "Spiegelwelt"- Reihe von Cornelia Funke und der Nachfolger von "Steinernes Fleisch".
Auch in diesem Teil der Reihe um die Brüder Reckless ist die Hintergrundidee einfach genial und magisch; Cornelia Funke besitzt wirklich jede Menge Fantasie und Kreativität, die man in jedem ihrer Werke wiederfindet und Jung und Alt zu begeistern weiß.
Während ich bei "Steinernes Fleisch" noch den Mangel an Tiefgründigkeit und den leichten Drehbuchcharakter mokiert habe, so hat sich das in "Lebendige Schatten" größtenteils gelegt. Teilweise haben mir aber immer noch Details und Tiefe gefehlt, obwohl Cornelia Funke sich langsam ihrem Level, das man aus der "Tintenwelt"-Trilogie kennt, annähert. Ich hoffe, dass sie im nächsten Band zu alter Stärke zurückfindet und mich wieder komplett überzeugen kann.
Dennoch ist "Lebendige Schatten" auch von der Spannung her um einiges besser als sein Vorgänger und schafft eine komplexe Handlung mit einer, von der Höhe her, angenehm angelegten Spannungskurve. Auch mutet diese Geschichte mehr wie ein Märchen an und schafft es sogar an etlichen Stellen mir diese gewisse "Funke-Atmosphäre" zu vermitteln, die ich vorallem bei der "Tintenwelt"- Trilogie verspürt habe.
Diesmal hat Cornelia Funke die Märchenelemente der Gebrüder Grimm nicht so stark miteinfließen lassen, sondern sich stärker auf ihre eigene originelle Story fokussiert, wodurch der außergewöhnliche Charakter stärker zur Geltung gebracht wird und "Lebendige Schatten" einzigartiger erscheint.
Ich freue mich nun auf den nächsten Band dieser Reihe und hoffe, dass wir diesmal nicht so lange darauf warten müssen und dass Cornelia Funke endlich ihr gesamtes Können entfaltet, um zu zeigen, warum sie eine der besten Autorinnen der Welt ist.

Auch wenn die Charaktere im Gegensatz zu "Steinernes Fleisch" ein wenig dreidimensionaler erscheinen, besitzen sie dennoch noch nicht die Lebendigkeit, die man von Cornelia Funke gewohnt ist. Sie sind stellenweise noch sehr oberflächlich beschrieben und man vermisst Ecken und Kante, sowie die Liebe zum Detail, die ihnen Lebendigkeit einhaucht. Ich möchte noch mehr über sie erfahren, denn sie besitzen soviel Potential, das nicht ungenutzt auf der Strecke bleiben darf.
Cornelia Funke hat ein großes Spektrum an verschiedenen phantastischen Figuren abgebildet, wobei man nicht nur Märchenfiguren in der Geschichte findet, sondern auch andere magische Gestalten, die zum Teil von der Autorin selbst erdacht wurden. Ein Pluspunkt dieses Buches.

Auch der Schreibstil der Autorin bekommt so langsam ihren märchenhaften Charakter zurück. Während er im ersten Band noch leblos und oberflächlich erschien, findet man nun in "Lebendige Schatten" die geflügelte Sprache der Autorin wieder, für die sie so bekannt ist. Somit findet sich auch hier eine deutliche Verbesserung ihrer Wortgewandheit und magischen Erzählweise.(less)

Das Ende ist furchtbar vorhersehbar. Ebenso wie das Wortspiel mit dem "Earlking"/"Erlenkönig" (Ernsthaft - wer kennt denn nicht den Erlenkönig von Goethe?).

Mich hat auch ehrlich gesagt die Schreibweise bzw. einfach die Sicht auf die Geschichte durch Nerrons Augen unheimlich gestört, die zu viele Kapitel beherrscht.

Die Entwicklung von Fuchs' und Jacobs Beziehung ist schön, aber ganz ehrlich: ich hatte nie das Gefühl, dass sein drohender Tod genug Motivation für die Suche war. Es hat sich nie an...more

Zu Beginn von Band zwei habe ich dann erstmal ein paar Seiten gebraucht um mich wieder einzufinden, es ist eben doch schon zwei Jahre her, dass ich den Vorgänger gelesen habe, und ich konnte mich zuerst nicht einmal erinnern, wer denn nun Will, und wer Jacob war, aber je mehr ich gelesen habe, desto mehr ist "zurückgekommen", und je mehr sich meine Orientierungslosigkeit gelegt hat, desto wunderbarer wurde...more Ich mochte ja - im Gegensatz zu viele anderen - den ersten Reckless-Band schon echt gerne. Reckless: Lebendige Schatten ist ein wirklich... schön. Die Welt ist fantastisch, die Charaktere sind liebenswert - sogar Jacobs Widersacher habe ich echt lieb gewonnen - und einfach irgendwie rund und die Handlung ist spannend, auch wenn einem natürlich irgendwie klar ist, dass das Ganze nur so und nicht anders enden kann. Der Stil ist typisch Funke, spielerisch und elegant, angenehm zu lesen, anschaulich, fantasievoll.
Wie sich das für Bücher einer längeren Reihe gehört erfährt man mit jedem Teil ein Stückchen mehr über die Hintergrundgeschichte der Charaktere und die Welt, die unheimlich detailreich und durchdacht ist. Die Haupthandlung des Buches ist zwar, wie beim ersten Band auch, im Prinzip in sich abgeschlossen (was wirklich sehr freundlich von Frau Funke ist, es würde mich umbringen, wenn ich jetzt Ewigkeiten auf die Weiterführung eines wirklich fiesen Cliff-Hangers warten müsste), lässt einen aber trotzdem mit dem dringenden Wunsch, zu wissen, wie es weitergeht zurück.

Falls ihr noch mit dem Gedanken spielt, in der Serie einzusteigen, euch aber von den doch eher mäßigen Rezensionen des ersten Buches abgeschreckt fühlt: es wird - trotz der abgeschlossenen Haupthandlungen - immer wieder auf das bisherige Geschehen Bezug genommen (wie gesagt, am Anfang war sogar ich etwas verwirrt), es wäre also wirklich ratsamer, nicht gleich beim zweiten Band einzusteigen, auch wenn einen so manche Rezension wahrscheinlich echt dazu verleiten könnte. Und wie gesagt, Reckless: Steinernes Fleisch hat mich persönlich im Grunde auch schon sehr überzeugt. Es ist auf jeden Fall eine Reihe, die sich lohnt. Finde ich.(less)

Ich bin durch! Das war mein erster Gedanke, als ich das Buch aus den Händen gelegt habt. Nicht unbedingt die beste Voraussetzung, denn das Buch war nun wirklich kein absoluter Reinfall. So ist die Welt hinter dem Spiegel, in der so viele unserer Märchen war sind, eine interessante Welt. Vor allem der Wunsch ihrer Bewohner moderner zu werden, was dazu führt, dass immer mehr der magischen Welt verloren geht, macht die Spiegelwelt so faszinierend. I read this book more out of loyalty than for any other reason. I usually love Cornelia Funke's work.

It just doesn't click with this series. And the thing is I love the concept, the world behind the mirror (I have a rather huge weakness for middle-agey magic worlds, I must admit), the two brothers, the villian. It's my kind of book, and when I read the description, I got really excited.

I’m still not sure what to make of the Mirrorworld books. There’s a certain amount of “naturally I like them, they’re written by Cornelia Funke.” And I did really enjoy Fearless. I loved all the emotional conflict poor Fox went through this book. Being told upfront that her job is to shoot Jacob with the bow that may or may not cure him and is most likely to unleash death on ten thousand people is a lot for anyone. Fox is still dealing with the fallout from the first book though and is seeking closure and answers, only to be handed more emotional trauma. The ending also was spectacular. It was the sort of conclusion you’d never guess at the beginning of the book, but steadily creeps up on you throughout the story.

But I still haven’t decided what the series is really going to be about. Is this a collection of stories about a man who goes through a mirror to a magic world and has adventures? It’s possible. While both Reckless and Fearless are connected by characters, locations, and events, in many ways each is very self contained. Sure there are loose ends in both, and one is about the consequences of the other, but each has a clear denouement.

However, I’m starting to suspect that there is a substantially larger story taking place that we’re only starting to catch glimpses of in Fearless. All through the first book and through much of the second I dismissed the mirror as a storytelling device. Just another wardrobe/book/telephone box. But the end of Fearless leaves me wondering if the mirror itself is what the series will be about and that the real story has just now started. If that’s the case, I think it’s going to be a difficult series to reconcile, and I’m afraid that Reckless and maybe Fearless will end up outside of the main series as prequel books people go back to after reading the main set. And that would be a shame. However, if you set Inkheart next to Inkdeath without Inkspell to bridge the gap, there is a huge disparity in the stories. So for now, I’m going to bet on the extraordinary talents of the author and hope my concerns are unfounded.(less)

In Reckless, Jacob managed to save his brother Will from being totally transformed into a stone being or Goyl (a name derived, no doubt, from ‘gargoyle’); this was, however, achieved at great cost to Jacob himself, who appears thereby to have condemned himself to a magically-induced lingering death as a result of his self-sacrifice.

Unless of course he can find a key talisman, a deadly crossbow, in Helvetia, the land that coincidentally gave birth to the most famous Swiss hero of our own world, William Tell. For an otherworldly treasure hunter like Jacob Reckless that can’t be too difficult, can it? Well, only if he can obtain it before another ambitious treasure-hunter can get to it, Nerron, also called the Bastard because he is half-human, half-Goyl. The race to obtain the crossbow is the engine that drives this novel, another of Funke’s bleak fantasy tales that is rarely alleviated by humour or free from restlessness.

Funke’s world-building is admirable. The Mirrorworld that Jacob accesses through a looking-glass is an alternate Europe with archaic names for familiar polities, where fairytale figures, dangerous creatures and magical objects are real, a continent which is Grimm by name and grim by nature. Nevertheless, contamination from our 21st-century world (we assume in the person of Jacob and Will’s long lost father) has resulted in 19th-century technology impacting on this never-never land, with a new Industrial Revolution threatening to fundamentally destroy the ancient cities, Teutonic forests and peasant countryside that make up our view of the archetypal land of fairytale. Aiding our impression of a forbidding landscape are the people who inhabit it: the Bluebeard stalkers, the power-seeking tyrants and their sinister henchmen. Luckily, Jacob does have some assistance of his own in the shape of the shape-shifting Fox; and, of course, her loyalty to Jacob is not merely that of a staunch friend and companion.

Jacob’s quest for a cure is counterpointed by his search for his father, who he is certain survives in the Mirrorworld. Will Jacob find his father before death claims him? Funke builds up the tension in a very workmanlike way, and though the constant state of jeopardy that she describes can be quite wearing, somehow the four hundred and odd pages doesn’t seem overlong. There are some verbal sleights of hand in the final denouement, but what is crystal clear is that the end of the book is not the end of the story; while characterisation can be perfunctory – the main protagonists are largely stereotypes, the villains are mostly, well, villainous – one can only hope that Jacob and Fox will live to fight another day.

Oh my god. I love the first one of the Mirrorworld series, and it became my favourite book. But after this latest instalment...

When I say it's perfect beyond belief I'm not exaggerating. This book should be far more well-known.
Reckless Reckless was brilliant, with crime, action, romance, adventure, fantasy and all that. But Fearless, has all this, but takes everything to a completely new level.

Sequels are difficult: too much review bogs down the narrative, but too little is confusing for the reader (like myself) who has forgotten the particulars of the first book. Funke errs on the latter side, and I have to say that I was really confused for a lot of this book. Also, I’m not sure if it’s the translation from the German, but there were a number of times that I had to re-read paragraphs because attribution was unclear or jumped around strangely. I loved Reckless. I know people think generally pretty poorly of it, it seems, but to me, Reckless was perfect, everything I ever wanted out of a book. It was short and sweet, and the characters were developed to a tee, although I will admit I didn't care much for Will.

The writing is rich and lyrical as Fox and Jacob set off on one adventure after another. There are new characters-friends and enemies that I'm hoping to see more of in book 3. Funke writes beautifully. Sometimes I have to stop while reading just to admire the expressiveness of a phrase or metaphor. A lot of the time I can't though, because I'm too keen to find out what happens next. So these books mostly take place in a fairy tale word, but please don't give them to children. Really good, again. But there's nothing else to expect from Cornelia Funke, to be honest. I was very happy about all the familiar faces from the first book, I am glad that Fuchs (or fox as I assume she's called in the English version) got more back story. The hunt was amazing and very stressful (yes, for the reader, this is about life and death after all) and the competition was very likeable. I am excited to see more of him next time. Ya hace casi dos años de la publicación del primer libro de esta saga. Aquel me encantó y me terminé enamorando tanto de la pluma de esta autora como de sus ilustraciones. Este libro lo cogí con un poco de miedo, pues temía que me desilusionara y también, porque ya hace tiempo que me leí el anterior libro. Por suerte, a pesar de tratarse de una saga, se puede decir que cada tomo es independiente hasta cierto punto.

La historia se retoma desde la vuelta de Will a su mundo. Jacob lleva la polilla del Hada Oscura sobre su corazón y el tiempo se le agota. Durante meses ha buscado la cura que lo libere del nombre del hada y de la muerte que lleva pegada a su piel. Ya casi cuando ha perdido toda esperanza, le llega a sus oídos la existencia de un objeto que es pura leyenda incluso en el mundo tras el espejo.

Se trata de una ballesta infernal, capaz de segar a miles de vidas, que fue el arma mortal de un antiguo rey llamado El verdugo de brujas. Pero esta arma bajo determinadas circunstancias puede dar vida al que se está muriendo. Sin embargo, como toda búsqueda del tesoro no es sencilla ni fácil. Al cadáver del rey brujo le faltan la cabeza, una mano y el corazón. De modo que deben recorrer los reinos en busca de las tres partes, vencer a la competencia que les ha surgido, unir el cuerpo de nuevo para hacer aparecer el palacio perdido de dicho rey, adentrarse en la Ciudad Muerta sin contagiarse de la locura que la impregna, entrar en el dichoso palacio que está cerrado a cal y canto y finalmente, Jacob debe recibir una flecha de la ballesta. Vamos, casi nada… Y esto fuera lo único, aún podría decirse que es una misión medianamente fácil.

Durante este libro podemos conocer más profundamente a Jacob, y ya digo que es un personaje del que una se puede enamorar muy fácilmente. A pesar de proceder de otro mundo, lleva tantos años viviendo tras el espejo y esa tierra tiene tal encanto, que no se siente un forastero. Por otro lado, el personaje que más se nos da a conocer es a Zorro. En este libro se nos da a conocer su nombre y su vida antes de adquirir el pelaje de zorra.

Y sobre todo la historia que une a Jacob y a Zorro, lo que empezó siendo una mera amistad forjada por deberse la vida mutuamente a algo más, y ese algo más casi me sacó de mis casillas. Algo que no terminó de convencerme es la actitud de estos dos el uno con el otro, teniendo en cuenta que Jacob se muere, ninguno tiene mucha prisa para sincerarse en voz alta con sus sentimientos.

En esta búsqueda se nos dan a conocer otros personajes de diferentes razas. Cabe destacar el que representa a la raza humana es insufrible, se trata de un principito ególatra y narcisista, Luois que me provocó unas ganas enormes de cargármelo. Por otro lado está el caza tesoros llamado Nerron que acompaña el príncipe (más bien es al revés, pues el príncipe va para llevarse todo el mérito junto con su criado y guarda espaldas, y lo único que hace es incordiar). Nerron es un goyl, y con él conocemos más a esta raza y que no todos están tan contentos con su rey como cabía esperar.

El ritmo es constante y muy acelerado. La sucesión de capítulos va alternando como protagonista a Jacob con Nerron, y de vez en cuando Zorro es en quien se centra el narrador. Esto hace que la tensión sea mayor y muchas veces te quedas con las ganas de saber que va a pasar a continuación.

El final es bastante sorprendente. Aunque ciertas cosas te las ves venir, porque sabes que va haber otro libro después de este, la forma que todo termina no me lo esperaba.

En este libro es inevitable hablar de la edición. Es preciosa. Está muy bien diseñada, con todo lujo de detalles. Aunque en este las ilustraciones son menos frecuentes, o más pequeñas, siguen siendo preciosas.

Para todos los que esperáis terminar esta saga, tengo entendido que el siguiente libros ya está termina pero no publicado en alemán, de modo que toca esperar.(less)

Fearless sees us continue the events of Reckless, after the Goyle have taken control of the Empire and Jacob fighting for his life under the Fairies curse. Racing against time, he has one last hope to save his life. Find the crossbow of Guismond the Witchslayer, which has killed entire armies with a single shot, or as legend has it, can save a life when fired with love.
