I loved Cornelia Funke's Inkheart books and was a bit disappointed by the first Reckless book. I liked it but something seemed missing. I just finished the second book and liked it much more. The story continues where the first book left off. Jacob tries to find a way to counter the fairy curse that will kill him if he doesn't succeed. He is accompanied by the shapeshifter Fox. After every other measure Jacob knows of and tries fails to help a...more

So...middle books generally disappoint, but I was really hoping this one wouldn't. It did.
I loved Reckless, it was everything I've come to expect from a Funke book and I started this one with high expectations that the magical feeling would continue. I'm honestly not sure why it didn't. Maybe it was the secondary viewpoint of the other treasure hunter?

Jacob Reckless found a mirror in his missing father's study that allows him to travel to another world, a world full of magic. In the first Mirrorworld novel, RECKLESS, Jacob's brother followed him and was nearly turned into a Goyl - a creature of stone. Jacob saved him but is now under a curse himself, one that will kill him within the year. There is one last artifact that could save his life, but it will be a struggle to find it in time - especially since there is another searching for it.

My Thoughts:Wow. This book was brilliant. Funke weaves each vivid detail together with delicacy, resulting in the reader being left stunned. Oh, how I want to visit the Mirrorworld! Each word painted a picture in my mind and left me craving more. Magical. This story was magical.

I read this book more out of loyalty than for any other reason. I usually love Cornelia Funke's work.
It just doesn't click with this series. And the thing is I love the concept, the world behind the mirror (I have a rather huge weakness for middle-agey magic worlds, I must admit), the two brothers, the villian. It's my kind of book, and when I read the description, I got really excited.

Jacob Reckless is going to die. And an entire magical world at his disposal hasn’t managed to yield anything to change that…until now. A tomb has been uncovered, and rumors have it that it hold both the body of the Witchslayer and his magical crossbow. The legends say the crossbow comes with three arrows. The first, fired at an enemy in hatred, had slain ten thousand men. The second, fired at his son in love, had brought him back from death’s door. Jacob sets out to recover this one last hope wi...more
We're back in Mirrorworld, based on our world but alive with all the creatures we read about in fairy tales. Jacob, in our Chicago, has bid on a magic bottle inhabited by a northern djinni - their blood is rumored to reverse curses and boy does Jacob have a curse (that moth which will eventually eat his heart, a 'gift' after his role in the Blood Wedding; confused? read the first book). Turns out, the blood doesn't work so we're on to Plan Z, a magical crossbow that will either kill thousands or...more
Jacob Reckless returns to the world behind the mirror, where fairy tales aren't just stories but an alternate reality. In book 1 of this series Reckless, Jacob had saved his brother Will, but at a steep price, receiving a fairy curse that will slowly kill him. Jacob now must team up with the beautiful shape-shifter Fox to try and find a magic stronger than the Red Fairy's.

The second in Cornelia Funke’s Mirrorworld series has been blessed with an authentic-looking late 19th- or early 20th-century map by Raul Garcia, which greatly helps with orientation though, in keeping with the nightmarish nature of the books, its seeming accuracy can be deceiving. In Reckless, Jacob managed to save his brother Will from being totally transformed into a stone being or Goyl (a name derived, no doubt, from ‘gargoyle’); this was, however, achieved at great cost to Jacob himself, wh...more
asdfghjkl I can't.
Oh my god. I love the first one of the Mirrorworld series, and it became my favourite book. But after this latest instalment...
When I say it's perfect beyond belief I'm not exaggerating. This book should be far more well-known.
Reckless Reckless was brilliant, with crime, action, romance, adventure, fantasy and all that. But Fearless, has all this, but takes everything to a completely new level.

Fearless is Cornelia Funke's second book in her Reckless series and starts off right where Reckless left off. Jacob is trying to find a way to break the fairy curse that he received saving his younger brother. If he doesn't, the curse will kill him. This whole series is about adventure and treasure hunting (so to speak). Jacob must find a magic crossbow, but first he has to find three objects that will reveal the crossbow. There's action, romance with his companion Fox, adventure and de...more

Sequels are difficult: too much review bogs down the narrative, but too little is confusing for the reader (like myself) who has forgotten the particulars of the first book. Funke errs on the latter side, and I have to say that I was really confused for a lot of this book. Also, I’m not sure if it’s the translation from the German, but there were a number of times that I had to re-read paragraphs because attribution was unclear or jumped around strangely. It’s too bad, because Funke does a lot o...more
I loved Reckless. I know people think generally pretty poorly of it, it seems, but to me, Reckless was perfect, everything I ever wanted out of a book. It was short and sweet, and the characters were developed to a tee, although I will admit I didn't care much for Will.
Fearless, though? Man. Fearless did everything that Reckless did, and did it better. I loved it, every second of it, even more than I did for Reckless, and this book basically earned the MirrorWorld series a top slot in my list of...more

4 1/2 stars. Audio book. Once again Funke takes us behind the mirror with Jacob on a quest to find a cure for the curse the dark fairy laid upon him. The writing is rich and lyrical as Fox and Jacob set off on one adventure after another. There are new characters-friends and enemies that I'm hoping to see more of in book 3. And Fox, is very much center stage in this one. She is a fascinating character. What I missed in this one was the magic. In "Reckless" we were introduced to a skewed fairy ta...more
Funke writes beautifully. Sometimes I have to stop while reading just to admire the expressiveness of a phrase or metaphor. A lot of the time I can't though, because I'm too keen to find out what happens next. So these books mostly take place in a fairy tale word, but please don't give them to children. Much of what happens is deeply disturbing - serial killers, cannibalism, all kinds of cruelty, selfishness and corruption. These are mature books which have a lot to say about our world - mechani...more
HURRY UP BOOK!!!!!!!!! WHY AREN'T YOU WITHIN MY GRASP YET?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Really good, again. But there's nothing else to expect from Cornelia Funke, to be honest. I was very happy about all the familiar faces from the first book, I am glad that Fuchs (or fox as I assume she's called in the English version) got more back story. The hunt was amazing and very stressful (yes, for the reader, this is about life and death after all) and the competition was very likeable. I am excited to see more of him next time. The enemies were frightening and the best part about it was...more
Finally, a review of a (nearly) straight fantasy novel for young adult readers!
Ever since Robert Jordan's final novel A MEMORY OF LIGHT has come out, I've wanted to read and review straight fantasy. Probably because I haven't yet had a chance to read the conclusion to the Wheel of Time series. Is it good?
But I'm off on a tangent. What am I reviewing this week? FEARLESS by Cornelia Funke, the second novel in her Mirrorworld series. If you're familiar with Cornelia Funke, you know she's a terrific...more

Fearless sees us continue the events of Reckless, after the Goyle have taken control of the Empire and Jacob fighting for his life under the Fairies curse. Racing against time, he has one last hope to save his life. Find the crossbow of Guismond the Witchslayer, which has killed entire armies with a single shot, or as legend has it, can save a life when fired with love.

Another fantastic offering from Cornelia Funke, and a great second book in this series.
Fearless picks up a few months after Reckless leaves off, with Jacob and Fox separated by the mirror and Jacob searched for cure to his fairy problem, and Will and Clara happily back to their human lives in the normal world. But all of Jacob's plans to save himself have failed, and now he must inform Fox of the consequences of his dealings with the fairies, and set off in search of a little treasure for himsel...more

Cover Blurb: Yes or No? Yes. I love the moths and the creepy silhouette against the dark background, and the twining vines on the sides. I'm not a big fan of the title font, though.
Characters: For all of his flaws, Jacob Reckless really is a great protagonist. He's adventurous and has just the right amount of arrogance that lets him keep his cool in even the worst of circumstances. Cornelia Caroline Funke is a multiple award-winning German author of children's and YA fiction. She is best known for her Inkheart trilogy. The Inkheart books have gained a variety of attention, and critics have praised Funke as the "German J. K. Rowling".
