It took me way to long to read this book. I had no problems putting it down and I just had to force myself to finish it so I could move on to something else. The twist on how vampires were created wasn't enough to keep my interest. Several times I thought, "Oh, I think it's going to pick up now," only to have my attention held for 2 or 3 pages.

Once I was left alone long enough, I couldn’t stop reading this book till the end. When Dana’s husband gets sick and it looks as though he isn’t going to make it, Dana makes a deal with her own devil Donavan and gives him some of her soul so she can save her husband. WHAT I LIKED:

I adored how unique the premise of this story was. Basically, Dana gives her soul to Donovan in exchange for saving the love of her life. In doing so, her soul sister, Ani, is created. Ani is Dana's identical twin except for one key difference: Ani is a vampire. That right there is an awesome concept and so unique from anything I've ever read. WHAT I LIKED:

I adored how unique the premise of this story was. Basically, Dana gives her soul to Donovan in exchange for saving the love of her life. In doing so, her soul sister, Ani, is created. Ani is Dana's identical twin except for one key difference: Ani is a vampire. That right there is an awesome concept and so unique from anything I've ever read. Overall I thought this was pretty good, there was some romance, plenty of adventure, and a great relationship. The sisters are over 100 years old and you get flashbacks from present day to when Dana was younger and first gives away her soul. These are handled in separate chapters so it's clear when the flashbacks occur. I felt this was a great way to approach these and I think they really enhanced the story.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:

There are a couple of things that bothered me about this story. First of all, the formatting needs to be redone. Initially I was given a review copy but I bought the book on Amazon since it's only $0.99. Before I get into the formatting issues, let me say that I have a Kindle keyboard. Now, there are no indentations for the start of a paragraph and except in a few places, there's no extra white space between paragraphs. This made it very distracting when reading because it felt like the text all ran together. Additionally, the chapters didn't have definitive breaks so it was easy to miss the heading "Chapter X" amidst all of the text. Maybe it doesn't look so bad on other Kindles, but on mine it made me have to focus a bit more and disrupted my ability to truly become immersed.

My other issue was with the style. The author jumps perspective and sometimes I'd get confused about whose thoughts I was reading. You'd have a large block of one character's perspective then suddenly it would jump to someone else's. With no clear breaks in white space or anything to indicate a section break, it was jarring.

OVERALL VERDICT: 4/5 Blue Duckies!

The story and premise in general were great and really interesting. It definitely kept me reading and I was dying to find out what happened next. I just wish it were better formatted and that the author hadn't jumped perspectives so much.

This was a unique story on "twins" and how vampires come to be. I enjoyed the little flashbacks to Dana's beginnings, but was confused at first as to why Ani wasn't in that memory with her mother. I really liked the idea behind "Soul Sisters".

But when Dana is drugged and attacked behind a club, Ani steps in to protector her sister and ends up killing a witness who sees her feeding from her sisters attacker and triggers Donovan to put an end to Ani and Dana.

Soul Sisters was a pretty interesting read, it definitely had it's flaws but if you could manage to look past them, then it was pretty good story that could definitely be better. I thought the whole idea for Soul Sisters is pretty danged cool, but with all the errors in the book, I found it very hard to read. There are different POVs but there is no distinct mention of a change until you actually realize that you're now reading from another characters POV. Ahhh. All my romance junkies out there. There is romance in this book, but it's very muted. Not too much spark going on, but the characters did show a bit of spark between them. Though, I do wish there was more umph and less uhh. lol My poor unfulfilled romantic heart.

I did get this book a few months back on Amazon while it was free & then when I got an email to participate in the blog tour, I figured why not knock out a book in my TBR pile and join the tour. So, with that being said, I read the version I got from Amazon (and not the copy sent for the blog tour) before it was pulled and there was quite a bit of spelling tragedies. As well as mixing up of characters. There were times when Dana would say something or think something and then it would shift as if Ani had said/thought it. Again, the throwing off of the POV. Very confusing. I'm on the fence with the characters. I liked some of them, and some of them I was wondering WTF. Donovan, the Creator, is supposed to be this bad guy, but I never really got a "tread-slowly-he's-dangerous" vibe off of him. Which made me skeptical when Ani, Dani and the rest of the gang were training to whoop some creator ass.

Towards the ending, I was building up to this awesome showdown between the Creator and Ani, Dana and the rest of the group. (Thought, I just finished watching The Walking Dead then jumped back into reading and was still in an ass kicking mood) Well, a lot of build up and training and then BAAAAM. It's over. That was not a good ending for me. It was like a whole bunch of teasing and building up and then it all stops. I was disappointed to say the least.

I think this book could definitely be something great, it just wasn't a wow factor for me. The book fell and rose quite a bit, it wasn't boring, but it didn't keep my attention and wasn't very satisfying. I was on the fence with the rating for this book. I'm going with 2 Tropical Drinks because it could definitely use some work but it was decent. Easy to read and a nice twist to vampires.(less)

Intriguing & Unique

Janiera Eldridge did a wonderful job creating this world of vampires, it is truly unique and a one of a kind read. The journey the characters and that we the reader go through isn’t a light everything is going to be alight one. There is a real serious threat at the core of this novel, there is real fear and raw emotions/passions – strain underlining the feelings of the character which very precisely border on what real life emotions are like. Eldridge does don’t shy away from exposing what is at the heart of her characters whether that is their lust/desire, their anger or the everyday battle that takes place within their soul and the transgression between these is an eloquently one.

A novel with a gripping plot and the 2 interlinked time period’s create tension and mystery. It stirs up our emotions and really makes us feel. There are moments that parallel with real life situations and emotions throughout this book which will really move you, you have to be a rock for it not to do so! I’d hardly ever cry at a book but there were points I was crying on the inside– I’m not going to include any spoilers. There were moments when my heart panged gleefully with joy and when my heart shrivelled with confusion, pain and anger. Moments of happiness and sadness are mixed together in a blending pot; moments where emotions spill into one another and just like in Shakespeare’s play’s a tense scene is followed by a anti-tension/comic scene – however there is no comedy here!

Let me tell you this before hand readers – you can’t run away from that fact that there is A LOT of tension in this novel whether it is in that scenario of life vs death, sisterhood or love. I wanted both to get to the end to find out what happens and at the same time I didn’t want it to end because I would have to part with the character which I had become attached to and fallen in love with.

Furthermore, the bound that exists between the sisters is a powerful one – that really strikes the reader at the core of the heart. I know it did this to me. I was fascinated at how real their relationship was and how the novel reveals to us the very building blocks of this and the way it moves us through their plight/journey as sisters.

The powerful force of conflict that exists is something that I can’t describe to you because it is something you have to personally experience by yourself. Consider yourselves warned when I say that it will consume you – it will split you - on who to root for, who to hate and who to aim your anger/frustration at. You will struggle to pick whose side you will be on!

If you don’t read this novel then you are missing on a really fantastic read and that’s a real shame because something like this magnificent master piece shouldn’t be ignored/side-lined for the typical, main stream, hyped-up works of vampire fiction like the Twilight Series or The Vampire Dairies – I have read those yet this is simply in a league of its own.

What an awesome new twist for how vampires are created. I would of never thought of something like that and it was a good thing that Janiera Eldridge did because I loved this story.

Back in the late 1800's Dana was a 23 year old black girl in Harlem. She lived in a high class area with her mother and father, loved reading writing poetry and collecting her porcelain dolls. On a walk to the only doll store in town she runs into a beautiful young man named Bryson. They quickly fell head over heels for Each other and get married. While on their honeymoon something happens that causes Dana to have to turn to a mysterious Stranger for help to keep her Bryson with her. What he does is just amazing. He created Ani from a part of Dana’s soul. Ani is Dana’s Soul Sister and protector and in return Dana became immortal.

Currently, Dana and Ani are two totally different girls. On the outside they are almost identical but while Ani is the wild and crazy Vampire that loves to go out and party, Dana is the solemn and quiet Human who loves to sit around at home with a good book.

Ani and Dana are as close as can be. Dana has been a stick in the mud lately and Ani wanted to get her out and just let herself Loose for once. Dana got herself into trouble and ended up outside with some guy who was forcing himself on her. Ani Was not a happy vampire. She went a little crazy and ended up feeding off of the jerk and some other guy walking past.

This is a big no no in the eyes of the vampire society and they decide they want to terminate Ani’s life. Well, Dana and Ani Are connected so if one dies guess what happens to the other? Yep.. you guessed it.. Now they are on the run from Ani’s maker and they will stop at nothing to save their own lives. They’ve lived centuries But they are not ready to die today..

Soul Sisters is a very unique take on the current vampire paranormal trend. I really liked how the author breathed fresh air and ingenuity into this genre with her tale of twin sisters Dana and Ani. Each time we are taken back the reader gets a little more info into how vampires are made and how it all started for Dana and Ani. Soul Sisters was a really interesting book with storyline that was different than the other vampire genres I have read. Once I understood the difference between Ani and Dana being 'twins' and 'soul sisters', I was able to understand the book a little more. I love how one sister is a vampire and immortal while the other is just immortal. It really is a great concept and makes the book unique.

But I did find I was confused throughout the book in different parts due to not enough detail and clarification. Some of my questions were answered but there was still a few that I was left with in the end. Hopefully they will get answered as the series continues.

I also couldn’t connect much with Dana’s character at all. I think largely due to the fact that there wasn’t much detail to her or development. You would think that if someone was around over a hundred years they would have a little more depth to them. At one point she is furious with Ani and the next thing you know she has forgiven her for everything in the past…all because Ani saved her from slipping on some ice? Ani on the other hand was pretty neat character and I enjoyed seeing her relationship with Dana play out from her side of the story. She was more developed and I would love to see more of her and Diego’s past and present brought forth.

I also found the ending to be a little flat. There was a lot of buildup to take on Donovan and then it just ended. But with the ending I think it’s a great lead in to the next book of the series. All in all Soul Sisters was a fairly good read and quite interesting. The authors approach into the vampire world is appealing and I look forward to see where she takes the series.(less)

I went into this with a "Cool! African-American Vampire Chicks!" attitude, since most YA books fail to focus on women of color these days, and the story did a great job of that there. And, it definitely leaves you wanting to read Book #2, out of curiosity. But, it does fail in some areas.

Also, the story keeps bouncing back and forth between present times (which I assumed were the 90s, since this seemed like a 90s YA book to me), and the early 1900s. So, if you are not taking notes, you will get confused from time to time.

I loved Bryson. He seemed so perfect for Dana, and then, even after she made the deal with Donovan, Bryson was killed off so soon. I have to agree with Dana in the fact that I believe Donovan had something to with Bryson's death. But, we never find out for sure or not.
I also loved that Ani and Deigo got back together, regardless of the fact that their lives were all going straight to Hell in a handbasket at the time. Those two seem like soulmates. I hope they stay together.
Also, I wish that Dana and Christian, the werewolf, had gotten together. It was so clear that Dana was crushing on him like a giddy schoolgirl, but was afraid to tell him because of the situation. I really home she tells him in book 2.

The one thing that disappointed me the most about this book was that a third (or more) of the story is spent building up to this huge fight/battle where Ani has to kill Donovan to become Creator. And, the book ended with no fight, just Donovan being a real pushover, letting Ani just take the ring and his position away from him as she killed him.
It's sad to build it up like that, and just let us down. But, I still somewhat enjoyed the story. On to book 2 now!!(less)

This is not your typical vampire book, to where you get bit and you turn into a vampire. Soul Sisters is about a young woman named Dana who many many years ago was in love. I REALLY LOVED this book! It's so FRESH and ORIGINAL!! I received this book from the because I will be doing a blog tour for this book towards the end of the month(June) so make sure you look out for the dates, it's going to be GREAT!

Dana and Ani. Soul sisters literally, with Ani being created from a portion of Dana's soul. The premise on this vampire story is a new and refreshing idea on how vampires are created. After Ani kills a would be rapist of Dana's and then kills a witness to the murder, the Creator decides it's time for Ani to die (which means that both sisters would die). When in the dedications at the beginning of the book the author said she loved Stephanie Meyer I thought I was about to get a Twilight clone but how wrong was I!!! This book has a totally unique take on vampires that was highly refreshing as was so much else. For a start the lead characters are black, I'm not gonna say "African-American" as I think they may have come via the Caribbean should it matter.
