A "New York Times" bestseller!
It's been almost a year since October "Toby" Daye averted a war, gave up a county, and suffered personal losses that have left her wishing for a good day's sleep. She's tried to focus on her responsibilities--training Quentin, upholding her position as Sylvester's knight, and paying the bills--but she can't help feeling like her world is crum...more

Can i just say in a character's honor....MEOW lol

WOW, WHAT A STORY!!

Okay, i have to admit that THIS series, is at the moment my favorite urban fantasy series.
What's there not to like?
We have great characters, great stories, a BEAUTIFUL romance. YES, FINALLY!!! I think everyone that has been following this series, knows what i'm talking about! They're so...perfect for one another. And i have to say that i loved each and every single one of their dialogues....( a little fan moment here, sigh)..and...more

Sooooo worth the wait!

The October Day series is, hands-down, one of the best I've read. It offers everything I love - action, a rich, well-imagined world, and a fabulous cast of main & supporting characters. With the exception of A Local Habitation (which I liked, but didn't love), every book has become an instant favorite, and IMO, Ashes of Honor might just be the best yet.

The story picks up about a year after the events of book 5, One Salt Sea. October is still recovering from everything...more

The sixth installment of New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire’s Toby Daye series, Ashes of Honor, returns us to San Francisco and the world of changeling October Daye.

It’s been a year since the events of the previous novel, One Salt Sea, and Toby still hasn’t fully recovered from the personal losses she sustained during that time. She’s been trying to keep her focus on her responsibilities as Sylvester’s knight and putting in hours training her...more

Perfection. Non-stop action typical of this series, the beginnings of the romance we've all been waiting for wrapped in endearing tenderness and fierce loyalty, and personal growth that can only be called inspiring from a heroine that we've run the gamut with.

This book was perfect, it had it all.

LOVED ❤

I've inhaled the book and listened to the audiobook - yes, I'm a bit obsessed - which is how I devoured the first five books, so I continued the tradition! And Mary Robinette Kowal is the voice of Toby for me; she truly brings the characters to life!

Of the numerous Urban Fantasy series I am currently reading the October Daye series has become by far my favorite. Not only did Ashes of Honor solidify that fact but after reading that last chapter? Well, it made me into a fan-girl of epic...more

The 6th book in the October Daye series. Etienne, Sylvester's number 1 knight, has come to Toby with a problem. His changling daughter which he didn't even know existed until that day, is missing and it turns out that she has inherited his powers of teleportation in spades and without any of the controls. She is being hunted and is popping into areas that were supposed to be sealed off thousands of years ago by Oberon himself and if she continues unchecked, it will kill her and rip open holes in...more

One year after the events of One Salt Sea, Toby is still reeling from the personal losses she sustained at that time. When a teenaged changeling with uncontrollable powers that threaten to accidentally destroy all of Faerie goes missing, however, Toby and her friends find themselves heading right back into the midst of danger.
A great continuation of the series, this installment has all the ingredients I loved so much in the previous ones: great world-building, non-stop action, likable and contin...more

Toby kicks ass in this high octane addition to the October Daye series.

At this point, six books into the series, we've seen October make quite the transformation, both emotionally and physically. From orphaned changeling kid, wandering lost in the human world, susceptible to influence by Devin. To a wife and mother, trying to play Fairy Bride and have someone and somewhere to belong to. And finally, to where we are today; to a hero and knight errant to the Duke of Shadowed Hills, friend to the...more

The not-a-spoiler part: I loved this one. ASHES OF HONOR was worth the wait.

So first off - Tybalt. Obviously. I just... *flails* ah, I loved that he gets page-time in this book, and proper page-time at that. (view spoiler)[I’m thrilled that Toby and Tybalt - finally - manage to be at the right place at the right time together, and this was just such a satisfying book for readers who have been ‘shipping them from the start. (hide spoiler)]

But it wasn’t just the romance subplot. One of the main re...more

Toby Daye, Changeling detective and guardian of lost children is in trouble again -- must be a day that ends in a Y.

This time, it's an uneasy ally who needs her help -- a dalliance almost twenty years ago has produced a changeling child he only just found out about -- and now she's gone missing.

It's the type of case that Toby can't possibly pass up, because it's just not in her to turn her back on a child in danger. Besides, it'll take her mind off the grieving she's been doing.

The usual Toby...more

I have Ashes in my hands! Barnes and Noble put it out early! Oh Joy!! I have to finish Jacka's Taken and reread One Salt Sea.....
It is 3am (Sept 3), I am on pg 270, and Seanan McGuire is brilliant. But I have to go to sleep... Finished- I kept finding things to do to delay reaching the end, so it took 4 hours to read 83 pages. I could have given Ashes 5 stars by the end of the first chapter. By the end of the book, I was wishing Goodreads had a 5+ rating. Although McGuire does an incredible job...more

This one definitely delivers very strong character development, as well as advancing various plotlines and revealing more nifty bits about the world. Really happy with the direction the series is going in at this point. I also really, really enjoy when my predictions about how a book is going to end are totally off and was very pleasantly surprised by how this one finished.

Loved! Can't remember as many details about my feelings about it now, since it was over a month ago, but I do remember that I loved it and I can't freaking wait for the next one!

In the meantime, here's my (spoilery, watch out!) list of threads still left open at the end of the book, which I've been keeping since book 3 and changing to keep up with new developments:

-Simon Torquill (where the heck is he? what is he doing? why did he kidnap Luna and Raysel?)

-Raj and Tybalt (hopefully Raj doesn...more

My first thought upon finishing Ashes of Honor…”how long do I have to wait until the next book????” . The October Daye series is one of my favorite series and I am never (knock on wood) disappointed. In Ashes of Honor we find Toby is recovering from her losses a year later, but buoyed by her seeming inability to do great harm to herself and the friendships of her fetch, May, her squire, Quentin and the ever present, King of the Cats, Tybalt (dreamy sigh), she marches on.

Toby is called upon by Et...more

I anticipated reading Ashes of Honor, the latest October (Toby) Daye novel from Seanan McGuire, with both excitement and apprehension. I was excited because I absolutely love this series, and was eager to see how the story had progressed since the ending of the last book. On the other hand, I was apprehensive because the last novel, One Salt Sea, was so spectacular that I didn’t think anything could live up to that story. I’m happy to say in Ashes of Honor McGuire delivers yet another fantastic...more

I've really enjoyed this entire series and this book is great.

First off - if you haven't read the other books in the series, read them first. While I think this could be a good read without knowing the backstories, it will not have the same impact and you'll really lose the power of the story. Interestingly, some key characters come from one of the (IMHO) weaker books - the mysterious deaths in Forked Lightning.

In Ashes of Honor, Toby is once again finding a lost child (actually she has to find...more

October Daye is managing to move on with her life after the loss of both Connor and her daughter – but it’s hard and her grief is a background for this book. But, perhaps more so for that grief, she cannot turn away Etienne when he comes to her for help. He has a daughter, a changeling daughter who he never knew about. Her mother has only just informed him of her because she has gone missing – not just gone missing, but literally vanished before her friend’s eyes.

Perhaps not impossible, given th...more

3.5 stars, rounded up as a page-turner.

Best in series yet (or maybe I'm feeling generous today?), but still exhibits irritating traits from other books such as immaturity issues, missing the obvious, contradictions in what we're told and what characters later do and say, and getting characters out of what we're led to believe is an impossible situation by pulling the convenient magical rabbit out of the hat. (Did I say we couldn't do that trick? Nevermind... I'm pulling out the rabbit and saying...more

I'm finally caught up to the end of the currently published books in the series and have to wait for the next one like everyone else. ARGH.

The book opens with the scandalous idea of Etienne, straight-laced knight of Shadowed Hills, having a secret changeling daughter who is kidnapped before he even knows she exists. This, of course, hits a personal nerve for Toby, who has a changeling daughter of her own, and she's off on yet another kidnapping case. In the course of events, she returns to Tamed...more

I absolutely loved this book. Ashes of Honor is another excellent installment in the October Daye series. Most book series have had at least one substandard book by this point, but not so for Seanan McGuire. Every single book so far has been wonderful.

Ashes of Honor continued the pattern of being fast-paced, creative, and suspenseful. SM manages to work in details about the fae and Faerie in general without slowing down the plot for descriptions.

I loved reading about October because her charact...more

We return to Toby a year after the events with Gillian and the death of Conor to find her still struggling with what happened and engaging in increasingly reckless behaviour which causes May, Tybalt et co to fear that she is going to end up in a situation which gets her killed.

After a particularly dangerous episode, she returns home injured to find Etienne desperate to hire her to find his halfling daughter who has been kidnapped. It turns out that Chelsea has been opening portals to locked worl...more

More of a review of the series as a whole than just this book.

While a decent read, each book left me feeling shorted or slighted. Several times throughout each book there are flashes of a brilliant story but they're quickly hushed and replaced by the immediate short term crisis. Toby is a nice enough character, but spends WAY too much time almost dead and having her friends rescue her. While it might be more realistic, it doesn't exactly make for an amazing heroine. I know heroes are supposed to...more

The days when I could say "I couldn't put this book down", are sadly gone - there are too many other things that need doing - all the same, I was totally gripped by this book, which was, as usual edge of the seat stuff from start to finish.

I do not think Seanan McGuire's books are to be compared with Tolkien, Hobb, Bujold or any of the greats of fantasy writing, but I need to explain why I gave this five stars: there are times, regular every day times when you need meat and three vegetables or t...more

Sixth in the October Daye urban fantasy series about Toby, a knight in Duke Torquil's service in San Francisco. It's been a year since events in One Salt Sea .

My Take
I just love this series and this story is no exception. If only because Toby finally gets just why it is that Tybalt keeps coming to her rescue! McGuire is colorful and describes people, scenes, and battles beautifully. She does an incredible job of blending the supernatural wonders of the fae with the down home qualities of Toby an...more

Reading the reviews of this book, i find myself disappointed because people just don't sound that enthusiastic about it as they do about other books. For this reason i am going to write my own book review because i think this book is fantabulousa! And i'm not the type to make up words. This book, as previously said, is awesome. Everyone keeps focusing on how Toby grew and changed as person and fail to recognize that she didn't change, she is who she is, she just grew to adapt with her pain and g...more

POSSIBLE VERY SLIGHT SPOILERS ALERT!

(NOTE: I'm actually rating this one 5 1/2 Stars, even though it's not an actual option.)

When I finished Ashes of Honor last night, I was dancing on the seat of the Comfy Chair, fist-pumping, and yelling "Yes, YES, YEEEESSSS!!!" I can guarantee that this was not a pretty sight, but what else could I do? The book was definitely a home run for Seanan McGuire, and celebration was required! And for those who have been following this very good series, may I just say...more

3.5 stars. THIS is the book I hoped was coming after the dreary "One Salt Sea." As I said in my review for OSS, I felt like that book was set up simply to get rid of Connor and the daughter so October could move on with Tybalt and her new life without encumbrances, and lo, that is exactly what happened. I have some quibbles with that approach - God forbid October actually have to break up with one guy and choose the other, just because that's what she wants...no, one guy must tragically die, and...more

Make it 3.5. As always, Seanan McGuire writes brilliantly - her characters are dense, believable - and funny! Her plotting is always tight and she effortlessly (OK, at least it *appears* effortless) creates that sometimes-difficult-to-define "sense of wonder" that to me is the hallmark of great fantasy and science fiction writing.

Entirely - even obsessively - readable, but lacking the polish and a bit of the heart of her earlier stories in this world.

Oh, and watch out for Power Creep!! In Rosem...more

October Daye (Toby) is still grieving. Her loss had made her reckless. Her friends are worried about her. She keeps on putting her life in danger and she seems to have lost her way. Then, Etienne comes to her for help. He wants Toby to find his daughter, Chelsea.
Chelsea has been living in the mortal world and Etienne just learned about her existence. She is a tele-porter as well, and she can open doors to places in Faerie that had been long lost.
This is a very hard assignment for Toby, because...more

Hi! I'm Seanan McGuire, author of the Toby Daye series (Rosemary and Rue, A Local Habitation, An Artificial Night, Late Eclipses), as well as a lot of other things. I'm also Mira Grant (www.miragrant.com), author of Feed and Deadline.

Born and raised in Northern California, I fear weather and am remarkably laid-back about rattlesnakes. I watch too many horror movies, read too many comic books, and...more

“It’s been a long time since I’ve loved someone, but I know what it feels like. When you turn from me, it hurts. When you think badly of me, I think badly of myself. When you do stupid, suicidal things, I want to slap you upside the head and demand to know how you can be so brilliant and so blind at the same time.” Tybalt’s expression was calm. “If that’s not love, what is it?”

“Why are you telling me this?” I whispered.

“Because we’re probably going to die today.” He waved his free hand toward the street. “I’ve always tried not to lie to you; I’ve seen how you react when others do. Dying without telling you how I felt would be lying. I’ve been patient. I’ve given you time to recognize my feelings, and I’ve seen you choose a man who loved the girl you were, not the woman you are. Now he’s gone, and I can’t be patient anymore. I love you, October. I’ll be sorry if we die here, but I won’t be sorry I helped you… and I won’t be sorry I finally told you.”

“Tybalt…”

“Cats never regret anything,” he said, and he turned and kissed me.”
