Southern Comfort by Fern Michaels is a good read loaded with humor. Tick is a good cop, loyal and loving family man, but when he gets home from work one day to find his wife and children murdered, he turns to booze and becomes a beach bum in Mango Key. He sobers up but likes living on the beach with just his talking parrot that chose to live with him. It’s pretty deserted except for down about a mile is a building called “that place” by the villagers. He’s lived there for eight years in peace an...more

I have no idea how this one ended up on my e-reader; I have no memory of putting it there or even why I would having never heard of the author. Intrigued by this random book I set out to read it - mistake!

The first few chapters implied this might be quite a interesting mystery novel. The character of Kate Rush initially showed promise and I was relishing the idea of there being a decent strong minded female in the book. Sadly neither of those panned out, there was much talk of how cute people l...more

Wow - not the right book to read after "The Spy who came in from the Cold". This book was as bad as "The Spy" was good!

Fern Michaels is a step below Mary Higgins Clark, if you can imagine that. The first 50 pages were incredibly painful, but then the writing improved enough that I could finish the novel. Fortunately it wasn't that long. Throughout the novel, the writing was laughable poor (both content & grammar) and nonsequetor at times. I found it unenjoyable - even as light summer reading...more

Scarred by the horrible murders of his wife and daughter, Tick (short for Patrick) Kelly retired to the Mango Key down by Florida to become a beach bum. When two beautiful agents show up to investigate in Mango Keys, he was unwittingly pulled out of self-imposed isolation. His self imposed isolation is further broken by his twin brother Pete, who refuses to let him wallow in the past. When Tick, Pete, Agent Kate, and...more

Former Atlanta homicide detective “Tick” Kelly turned his back on the world the day his wife and children were murdered. Abandoning the city life and his career, he now lives in a beach house on Mango Key, Florida. After drowing his grief in Jack Daniels, he finally manages to sobered up to become a bestselling author. However, Tick would gladly stay a recluse forever, that is, if his brother Peter will let him.

After years of sacrificing her personal life in favor of her DEA job, specialist Kat...more

The jury is still out. I picked this up to listen to while driving since I had never read a Fern Michaels book. So far, 6 chapters in, I can't see what the huge appeal is. She repeats herself with descriptions, the characters are fairly standard (no one I would cry over), actions/events seem to be choppy giving the feeling that an over enthusiastic editor took out lines to save space. As for the reader, well, he's just trying too hard. A different voice for each character can be a good thing pro...more

Tick (short for Patrick) Kelly, lost it the day his wife and children were murdered. The former homicide detective moved to Mango Key, Florida and became a beach bum and writer. Kate Rush, a DEA agent, has had it with her official job and the personal sacrifices it has required, and moves back to Miami. However, another intriguing job presents itself and Kate can't pass it up. Lawrence Tyler, Kate's former boss and the son of the governor of Florida, has come to the end of his career and is will...more

Southern Comfort is the latest by Fern Michaels. I have to admit that I was largely disappointed by this one.

What I didn't like: The plot. It never got off the ground for me. The book dealt more with Lawrence "Larry" Tyler and his problems than it did with Kate and Tick. I found Larry Tyler a very annoying character. I can't stand whiners and that is how he came across to me. I found myself rooting for Kate and Sandy when they were picking on him. The suspense part of the plot was never really...more

Just finished this one and though I mostly enjoyed it, I felt a little cheated toward the end of the book... It's been a long while since I've read any of Fern Michaels' work... Does she always wind up things so quickly? It was a whirlwind of an ending... all the loose ends tied up in a bow in about 10-15 pages... Was she trying to meet a deadline???

Since I read an ARC edition of the book, maybe when it hit the book stores it was a little more fleshed out at the end... my copy was pretty cut &...more

Fern Michael's novel "Southern Comfort" is about Patrick (Tick) Kelly who is a cop and on his way home from work to see his loving wife and young son and daughter, he is faced with his worse nightmare. His entire family has been brutally murdered and Patrick finds himself alone looking at the inside of a bottle for over eight years. He has moved away to a remote part of Florida where his twin brother (Pete) finds him. Tick has decided to give up the bottle as he felt he did not want to die and w...more

That was quite possibly the worst book I have ever managed to finish. It wasn't enraging - all I could think as I read the book was what morons the heroines were. O. M. G.

Incompetent, bumbling fools whose dialogue made them sound like know-it-all teenagers.

And a romance? That wasn't a romance. That was a poorly written, seriously implausible crime novel with a 'romance' ending tacked on in the epilogue.

And now I have the refrain, "I don't think your ready for this jelly" stuck in my head beca...more

Can you give zero stars? This is quite possibly the most poorly written book I've ever come across. Who publishes this crap?? The plot (what there was of one) was not developed and so far fetched. The characters were ridiculous. And the ending??? So lame.

The book begins with the main female character punching out a co-worker who also happens to be a senator's son...and nothing happens to her. He doesn't press charges?!? It gets more and more unreal after that. Yeah, that's right more ridiculous...more

This was my first Fern Michaels read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'll be watching for more of her books. Southern Comfort is a story of heartbreak, suspense, romance and humor, especially when it comes to a parrot named Bird, who can talk. I don't often read romantic suspense, but getting to know all the characters, and a great storyline won me over. Also, one of the characters, a DEA agent has my name, first and last (previous marriage) so that was neat. All in all, I liked this book and I wo...more

Fern Michaels amazes me at how she can have so many complex characters in one book, all weaved together.

Southern Comfort grabbed my attention from the forward, I was glued !

Tick is a Homicide Detective, that moves to Mango Key Fl after a tradgic night. He tries to drown out the memories by drinking and becomes a recluse. His Brother Pete comes to visit, and tries to bring him back to the "land of living." Pete and Tick meet two hot DEA agents, Kate and Sandy. They all become involved in a year l...more

Well, I'm disappointed in Fern Michaels. I really didn't like her last series about the women out for revenge & now since she finally wrote something besides that, I was excited! But this story was just OK with me. I really miss Ms. Michaels writing like in her earlier series, Kentucky, Vegas, etc. I would love to read something like that again from this 'used to be one of my favorite authors'. I will be waiting for the novel from this author, like her earlier writing. I still have hope! ;)

Loved this storyline. Atlanta homicide detective, leaves the life he's known due to the horrific murder of his wife and children. He got in his car and just drove with no particular destination in mind. He ended up on small island off the Florida Keys where he lived in solitude for years. But, his life will change when not only a talking Parrot, his twin brother and the DEA come knocking, but he is given the chance to start over.

First time reading a Fern Michaels and I enjoyed it. Good story, good mystery. I enjoyed the secondary characters. I think I would have enjoyed this more if there was more development of the romance between the heroine/hero. I may have come into this wrong thinking this was a romance novel because even though there was the much loved Happy Ending, I didn't see any development between the characters to get there.

I received this from another site. While the story sounded good in the list, and the back cover, I found it all to predictable. I guess you could sum this up as a couple of air head girls who are supposed to be DEA agents meet twin brothers, and skip to the end and you know what happens.
The book is well written with a compelling story, but seemed a little silly and lost in the quest to get the boys/girls.
I was surprised to see the number of books Ms. Michaels has written - I have never heard of...more

I really should've checked the rating before impulsively downloading this onto my Nook.

How I managed to continue reading past the line, "Sally Pritchard Kelly was the wind beneath his wings," I'll never know.

The characters were unoriginal and bland, the story uninventive and boring.

The writing improved only enough for me to manage finishing it.

I don't feel like wasting anymore time on this book and neither should you.

I'm a Fern Michaels fan; her Las Vegas Trilogy is a favorite. Although this book was a pleasant diversion (especially during Hurricane Sandy's aftermath) Lawrence Tyler's character was a little too cliche. I won't let this book detract from reading others by the author. It's also closer to a 4 star than a 3, but still gets a 3 as it needed more depth/development.

This book has a horrible ending. Though the book ramped up quickly, some essential and interesting parts of the plot were extremely rushed, and the synopsis in the back cover is very deceptive. Though I enjoyed the read for the most part, I was disappointed. Too rushed, to little thought, too many elements at once that didn't get enough focus. Blah.

I have trouble thinking of the Florida Keys of "southern" in terms of the reference to "southern comfort." The story seemed long and overly complicated in the beginning, and wrapped up ignoring all the complications of adopting a child in Florida. It was a quick read, which was a plus.

I read this book for relaxation. Fern Michaels is always good for that. I don't think this was one of her best. It was just too easy to figure out what was going to happen and took too long to have anything happen. I did like the characters.

This book reads like some horrible piece of fan-fiction. The dialogue is painful and contrived, the story is one dimensional and occasionally borders on ridiculous. It took a concerted effort to finish this books and I kind of wonder why I bothered.

Waste of money.
