I just didn't connect with this one for some reason. Nothing particularly wrong with it, I just felt a bit like I didn't care all that much. There was lots of world building thrown in with little bits about nasty shifters and I wasn't sure how Mikael got out the word and where all the people on the farm came from beyond the fact that he took in shifters. I liked this book, but I’m going to start off with the not-as-good so I can end on a lighter note. Again, you can click on the picture to get a full synopsis of the book. He’s a brief synopsis: Half-shifter, Mikael, runs a shifter sanctuary on a farm and finds a tiger-shifter, in the woods and nurses him back to health. It’s the first in a series it seems.

The book is set in countrysides of Finland and the author herself is Scandinavian and lives in the Northern Europe area much like where Chuffed takes place.

I would have like more background on the world of shifters. There are different kinds of shifters living on the farm, but Fielding never really dives into how they came to live there or why. Somehow an American were-jaguar and former marine medic made it there, but again, how/why (though it might be explained in a sequel) is not really explained. Was there a tragedy of some kind? What is the shifter counsel?

With other shapeshifter erotica, the concept of have a ‘one true mate’ made for you and only through the supernatural Powers That Be. With OTM, two mate meet and instantaneously are overcome with lust and an empathetic connection is formed. Mikael and Maxim, the were-tiger, seem to have a connection but I’m not sure if it’s OTM or they just happened to fall in love on their own. Perhaps a bit of both? I think Fielding could’ve given us a bit more information.

Though I had a lot of questions about the shifter mythology, it didn’t detract from the over all story. The only parts that did detract a bit from the story was the focus on the two teenage boys living on the farm and their shenanigans.

I found the characters to be well-rounded and individualized. They worked as a unit and functioned like any large extended family. While Maxim and Mikael’s relationship seem to steadily play out even though Maxim had maybe been on the farm for two weeks and Maxim was only human through less than half of the time he was there. The sex scenes were hot and paced well. I hope Fielding expands on their relationship a bit more (Could Mikael be able to shift with Maxim’s help?) but at the same time, their story seems finished.

Overall, this is would be a good book to add to your shapeshifter collection and the rest of the series will probably be interesting as well. (less)

I really liked this book, but it was missing something. I’m not sure what, though. I read it straight through, but not because I couldn’t put it down. This book is set in Finland, right on the border with Russia. No other books I’ve read have been based in Finland, which makes it a nice change. Mikael, a half shifter, owns a farm and offers sanctuary to any shifters who travel through. Mikael can’t shift and doesn’t know what type of shifter his mother was. Okay, how adorable was this? Extremely, to say the least. It’s really not a “cute” story, yet it struck a chord. Mikael’s father started the safe haven for shifters, and Mikael, at almost 40, is in charge now that his father has passed. He does a good job of it, and he takes his responsibilities very seriously. Mikael knows that he is half-shifter but his mother died before she could teach him anything and his father was so brokenhearted he never discussed it. Mikael doesn’t even know what kind of shifter makes up half of himself. The fact that he’s gay made the relationship that much more strained.
When two of the teens on the farm get into some trouble, Mikael goes to sort it out and finds the Siberian tiger, who turns out to be Maxim. Maxim is hurt badly, having survived a horrific attack on his family. He is distrustful, very proud and not the most verbose shifter you’ll ever meet. What he does , however, is instinctively trust Mikael (who has been nearly celibate for nearly eleven years, so you really WANT him to have someone). The dance these two go through as they get to know each other was so interesting.
Ms. Fielding has a clever way with words and just made me laugh. When Mikael is worrying about a shifter taking over, he knows he can’t tell the police. “I’m sorry, but there’s a massive beast who wants to live on my land and my farm and boss me around”. I could picture him trying it. Or when there is a virtual pissing contest between Maxim and Noah (a jaguar shifter) and Mikael tells Noah to shift back, and ends up “A human with his pants around his ankles and a t-shirt hanging around his neck”. I loved that. Actual animal issues, such as sheets smelling due to dirty cat, are addressed which I also enjoyed. So often in shifter books, it’s magi-kitty. I also liked that sex wasn’t perfect in all ways. Mikael had to get used to the taste of semen again. Again, after nearly eleven years, yes!
While the blurb talks of “their” egos, it is Maxim who is uber-proud. Most of the issues occur from him being too proud to ask for help, to ask Mikael to stay, etc. But the ending, oh my, loved it. Adorable and sweet, a little babble and a little chuff. Very recommended for shifter fans.

This book was great but the ending of the epilogue made it even better. Who knew being chuffed at could be so cute? And emotional. Lol.

This was a short and easy read that had a simple but intense feel to it. I really enjoyed it because I've always loved stories that offer sanctuary homes. Add into the fact that Mikael is a half-shifter made things a little bit more interesting.

Why I Read this Book: Been on an MM shifter roll lately.

What I Liked: Maxim and Mikael are real people who begin a meaningful relationship. In a lot of MM romance, the sex is the point of the romance and the book but that isn’t the case here. Maxim and Mikael both have full lives before they meet and they realistically navigate what being in a relationship means to them. This isn’t to say their romance isn’t erotic because it is but the sex is only part of why they’re together and I liked this a lot. They have an honesty and earnestness to their romance that I really enjoyed and think others will too.

What I Also Liked: The Finnish setting was wonderful. I liked the gentle education about the language, the land and the sauna which is a cultural identity. The shifter sanctuary is also unique and full of great secondary characters. Mikael’s human father left him the farm after he died with the expectation that Mikael would continue using it as a shifter sanctuary. The shifter animals that live with Mikael make a community for the book that I adored. There is the wolf family with parents Sean and Zoya and their funny wolf pups; the damaged lynx shifter Lark who has internal strength; Noah the mysterious American Marine who is a jaguar shifter; and the troubled teenage fox shifter Anton who always manages to get in trouble. I loved this cast of characters and how they come together to fight the threat against their home.

What I Didn’t Like: Nothing, this is a delightful, well written novella.

IMO: I recommend this above average MM shifter novella and will be looking to read book two the moment I can. (less)

slow story without too much conflict which includes concepts about shifters that made me shake my head -for ex, even though they are shifters (one of them half shifter) they got TESTED so that they could have bareback sex - I guess in this world shifters transmit diseases, remain with scars that were gained in battles, take a long time to heal, and their reasoning is weird (cant go to hospital to take care of cuts and bruises for fear of discovery, but a BLOOD TEST is ok!

Nothing extraordinary..more of a daily life in a shapeshifter community. There's a little drama thrown in ( the lion ) but predictable..within few pages - the action is done.

Maybe this is the first in this series, so there will be more plot coming into the picture.

This was a very cute a quick read. Mikael owns a farm that he has taken over from his deceased father in Finnland (thus the Finnshifters series name). I truly enjoyed this new Shifters series. The start was good and pulling. Sure the romance between Mikael and Maxim was matter of factly, but heck it was good enough. We will see where the next book will lead us. For now it was a good, even if short, read!

What should I say about that book? The plot is shallow and the writing stile is boring. I did not feel any feelings from the characters and the main couple did not pull me in any way. The time spend for reading that book was waisted.

Eh, pretty run-of-the-mill shifter story. Nice premise, and good for passing the time in an I-don't-need-to-think-so-hard kind of way, but pretty thin on the plot and character development aspects.

Story about a shifter sanctuary in Finland run by a half shifter Mikael ( and really just a human, since he can't shift and doesn't have any special abilities).
There is a wolf pack and a lynx and a fox and more in this menagerie , and Maxim a lion shifter comes to them badly injured and is Mikael's love interest.
This was a nice enough story and I will probably read the next one, but it didn't have anything special about it to make it stand out to me.
