Sarah Mayberry (Goodreads Author)
She thinks he's stuffy. He thinks she's spoilt.

Her Best Worst Mistake is such a sexy, tender, enemies to lovers tale with a slow to grow, but very sweet romance. I enjoyed this story and the characters who learn the importance of not judging someone as lacking before truly getting to know them.
Sarah Mayberry writes some of the best stories! She knows how to get to the heart of her characters and make them come alive. They're the kinds of people you'd want to have for your own friends or lovers, and that makes for stories that draw you in and...more

Oh, but I really enjoyed this one! There are opposites attract stories and then there are opposites ignite, combust, and singe my Kindle stories and this is definitely the latter. Whew!
And the premise is one of my favorites...seemingly stodgy, stuffy, rich, straitlaced Darcy-esque hero and free-spirited, quirky, flamboyant, provocative heroine clash, battle, and then inevitably end up lusting and scorching up the sheets...and pretty much any stable surface.

I really enjoyed this book - it was a quick read! For such a short read I was surprised at the depth to the characters and how much I enjoyed them!
Opposites really do attract right? Violet and Martin are like oil and water and the bad news is he's marrying her best friend so she's going to be stuck with him!

Dear Ms. Mayberry—
I think your novel Hot Island Nights is splendid—I love the rapport between Elizabeth and Nathan—and I was happy to learn your new self-published novel Her Best Worst Mistake is a companion/sequel to that tale. Her Best Worst Mistake chronicles what happens between Elizabeth’s wild best friend Violet and Elizabeth’s stuffy ex-fiancé Martin when the latter is dumped by Elizabeth eight weeks before their wedding. This was a very good read but I didn't like that the heroine took all of the book to come clean with her best friend. The hero was not clearly defined but I liked him a lot anyway. The love story and the writing were also very good.

This one was so good that it came as an unexpected surprise! A short neat entertaining read full of witty tidbits and steamy romance while sporting an interesting plot, this one featured a beta gentleman hero who turned rather naughty and proved to be quite a lovable rogue when fell in love with his all time polar opposite of a nemesis heroine.
I do recommend it if you are looking for a quick spicy yet fluffy romantic read to lift up your spirits.

I liked this one a lot. The banter was fun, there was lots of smexy in it and the opposites attract kind of thing is cool. I just had a feeling it was too short and, so I didn't get a feeling of depth...or something. I don't feel up to writing a 'real' review now, but here are some quotes...

“Shut up,” he said, and then he kissed her, because there was no other way of conveying how he felt.
Kids: “Mom, what’s for supper?” Me: ….. Kids: “MOM!” Me: [waves absently towards the kitchen]. Daughter: “She’s reading one of those books again.”

Happiness is a book you start reading to occupy a few moments of your time, say like while you're waiting for a pan to heat up and some butter to melt so that you can cook your dinner...and then you just can't walk away from said book...you read it through said dinner and sit for hours in that same post-meal position and then finally stir yourself to just lay down and finish it out...Surrender, if you will. Tightly focused story with satisfying emotional depth and consistent hotness. True the lead couple have more chemistry than romance, but Mayberry shows some key difficult moments between them that were enough for me to believe in there being a solid basis for a long-term relationship. About the only thing I didn't like was the placement of a sex scene right after an important confrontation with another character - like the heroine was rewarding the hero for standing up for her. I guess that's a...more

I've heard a lot of people talk about Sarah Mayberry as the best that category romances can offer. An author who writes Harlequin-style but with characters that feel real and gender dynamics that won't make feminist readers cringe. I'm not a category fan, and HER BEST WORST MISTAKE has that category feel that doesn't work for me, but I did appreciate the positives.
That being said, I didn't enjoy the first 75% of the book.

This was effervescent. It was chemistry and sparks and heat and everything I ever want in a contemporary romance, because it surprised me with the depth of emotion without having to lean on any dramatic miscommunication trope. This is simply the story of two people falling for each other in such a real, lovely and electric way. Two people who've been tolerating the other because of the person they have in common, but it only takes that one misstep, that one caught look, that one push to send the...more

Full disclosure...Sarah Mayberry is a friend but I would have loved this book even if I didn't know her. Her Best Worst Mistake has everything you want in a romance--smoking hot sexual tension, sparkling dialogue and a hero and heroine who on the surface are like chalk and cheese yet who nevertheless clearly belong together.

It wasn't any one single review of HER BEST WORST MISTAKE that led me to give Sarah Mayberry a try. It was just the general rumblings making their way through my little portion of the blogosphere. Collectively, these sparkly rumblings convinced me to purchase the ebook and see if it was my kind of story. On the surface of things, the cover gave me a Julie James vibe (always...more

One of my best finds in recent years has been Sarah Mayberry. I've loved just about all her books I've read so far and Her Best Worst Mistake is one of the best ones so far. It's a real case of opposites attract. Violet Sutcliffe and Martin St. Clair have her best friend and his fiancé in common and that's about it. They really dislike each other, she thinks he's a stuffy bore and he thinks her too wild and flamboyant.
But when Elizabeth ends their engagement and flies off to Australia ( and her...more

More than an "opposites attract" story, it's a "people's particular strengths and weaknesses enhance their chemistry and their relationship (and help them help each other accept themselves)" story. It's a "love means you don't compromise who you are; instead, it helps you focus who you are and who you want to be" sort of story. Those are mouthful descriptions, but Violet and Martin had me pondering their specific relationship dynamic and why it felt like such a good romance. It was because Viole...more

My heading ought to be I'm reading...Sarah Mayberry...again! Along with Rachel Gibson, Sarah is my go to girl right now. I'm blissfully ploughing through her glorious backlist and gleefully snuggling up with her front list as they come along.

This is Martin, the dumped fiancee's story, so far he has come across as stick in the mud, repressed etc but we see a different side to him. He has become something from nothing and he values that, it annoyed me sometimes but he grew on me and he really did care for Elizabeth and didn't see how she was stifling herself.

Why I read it: This book is Ms. Mayberry's first foray into self publishing and all those on her mailing list (of which I am one) received it free as a thank you for subscribing. Of course, the reason I'm a subscriber is I'm a fan of her work.

At first, the common denominator between Violet Sutcliffe and Martin St Clair is Elizabeth Mason. Violet is Elizabeth's best friend and Martin is Elizabeth's fiancé. But Violet thinks Martin is too stuffy, too boring, a man with a stick up his ass, while Martin thinks Violet as too wild, too easy, too vacuous. They hate each other on sight. Only after Elizabeth breaks the engagement, Violet feels sorry for Martin, and she brings him peach schnapps (because she remembers he likes it), and later t...more

Romance novels are a bit like chocolate; a mindless guilty pleasure you may indulge in on occasion, but with limited nutritional value they’re certainly not something you could (or should) subsist on. Not unlike chocolate, they can range in quality from the fifty-cent compound special that turns to chalk in your mouth, to the sublime richness of a Godiva truffle. And, as we all know, should have the good fortune to find a Godiva placed in your hands you don’t question it – you savour it, enjoy i...more

If you are a fan of Sarah Mayberry and her Blaze line novels, you must have come across Hot Island Nights which was released in September of 2010. In Hot Island Nights, Sarah leaves readers with a tantalizing glimpse into the relationship between Victoria and Martin and I for one was drawn towards it so much so that I mentioned in my review about wanting to read their own story. Sarah Mayberry was born in Melbourne, Australia, and is the middle of three children. From the time that she first “stole” paper from kindergarten and stapled it together to make “books,” Sarah has always wanted to be a writer. In line with this ambition, on graduation from high school she completed a bachelor of arts degree majoring in professional writing, then sat down to write a book. When ins...more
