Ew, I think this was just trying to be WAY too clever. We had about 6 different time streams running at once, along with two different stories. The companions from the different TARDIS' meeting up and a Beowulf being told in different timelines. I think the countless flashbacks and the jumps around just added unnecessary confusion and not any drama or mystery.
