Upon the invasion of her homeland, at the tender age of 22 Kyra was sent from her homeland to a distant planet. Nothing was known of this planet other than the fact that her father, a famous seer, considered this the best possibility for her survival. Kyra has lived on earth, reinventing herself every decade or so for over 400 years. She has learned to hide what she is and to never make close friends. Just more on and begin again. A lonely, barren existence. For some reason this time around she has made a loyal friend who needs her as much as she needs Zoe. I think because Kyra is just at the end of her rope.. slowly wondering if she should just give up hope. I mean how long must a girl wait before someone actually comes for her.

Calic.. the super hunky bad boy of the Demon Race, brother to Sebastian and second in comand on the Marada has been sent to find her and save her. To keep her safe until the Marada arrives. Sure no problem. In theory Cale should be the perfect foil, while he is attracted to women sexually there is no chance of him bonding as he had found and lost his mate years ago. Constantly surviving on the edge all he needed to do was keep Kyra safe. The problem is, as soon as they connected he was lost. She was bringing up feelings that should have long been dead.

Convinced she was magically enhanced at best, using her magic to bespell him at worst, Cale waffles between extreme need and complete rejection of Kyra. Causing her to have to fight her emotions, focusing on inner battles instead of the one to come. Ms Fay gives us a powerful story of a lost sister, ruler, lover and friend.. connecting Kyra with her sisters and returning them to their home. Their only goal to save their homeland.. maybe find their father alive.

This is a battle for love, family, home and yes retribution.. A warrior must learn that revenge would be good and yet ensuring that love survives matters more than mere revenge. Cale and Kyra must find their way through a minefield of emotions.. trying to learn if there is a bond there. And if not, does there need to be? Can one ignore the mating bond and just love? Will Kyra fulfill her destiny? Will she be able to harness her powers in time? Will she in the end destroy everything she loves?

There is so much going on in this book.. I hope Ms Fay is setting us up for a second trilogy if not just an extended series.. While the main story arc has been wrapped up.. we see the battle for Evlon.. there are still relationships that I find myself invested in.. Sophy and Ethan, Rex, Adrian, Zoe, Portia.. all have intriguing stories to tell.

This was an incredibly powerful story and Ms Fay has done the trilogy format well. As the heros arise from despair and focus on redemption and yes retribution

This book was such a relief to read after trudging my way through Demon Slave. Fully developed and interesting characters, fantastic and suspenseful plot development, and a compelling love story between two star-crossed characters. Thank you Kiersten Fay for bringing back the fire to this series.

Overall I enjoyed this one! Demon Retribution is book three in Fay’s self pubbed Shadow Quest series. I have not read any of the books prior to this one and so I went into it hoping that I would be able to grasp the world building without the knowledge of the prior books. I think, had I read the first two I would have gotten the concept much easier, but as it was I think I did okay. Kyra has been living on earth for 400 yrs after being sent away from her planet by her desperate father who was on the brink of a invasion. She’s lived on her own and never allowed anyone close since then until she met Zooey in the last few yrs. They became close friends and Kyra her fierce protector, though her friend is clueless as to her interstellar heritage. Kyra knows it’s time for her to move on but with her friend so dependent on her for emotional support, the time doesn’t seem right.

When she is attacked by aliens in the alley behind the coffee shop she works at and then rescued by a man claiming to have been sent by her father, Kyra’s long lost hope flares to life. Cale has been sent to find her and bring her home but he isn’t sure he can tell her what he truly is, a demon. Kyra has no knowledge of demons and so is justifiably confused and worried about trusting someone who seems intent of getting her back to his ship one way or another.

I loved the first half of the book. It’s full of action and smexy goodness and was well wrote. I wasn’t sure why Cale kept wanting to have sex though because Fay makes it clear that because demons only mate bond once (and he has but she died) that when they try again fire fills their veins and it’s extremely painful. Now I don’t know about you, but even if David Backham walked up to me naked and begged me to do him, I’m not sure I could if the result was agony ripping through my veins because he wasn’t my mate. I love sex as much as the next person…but even a sadist might take issue with that. So anyway, other then that I loved the first half of the book.

The second half is where it gets hairy for me and it might be because I didn’t read the first two books. All these other characters and their side stories show up on the spaceship and I wasn’t invested in them at all. Because of that I thought the second half was bloated in word count and at times slipped into lulls and got quite boring. Cale’s sister has what could easily have been her own novella in the second half and it was to much. I wanted Cale and Kyra and not all their friends too. I did like her being reunited with her sisters and thought it was a great idea having their powers combine in the final fight of the book. I enjoyed Kyra learning the parameters of her powers throughout the book and thought it helped her character grow.

I would recommend that readers start this series at the beginning and perhaps you won’t feel as I did. Fay has strong writing and good story lines that I think paranormal/sci fi romance readers will enjoy!

I give Demon Retribution by Kiersten Fay 3.75 stars! (less)

I did not enjoy it as much as Demon Possession, but it kept my attention only because I was expecting things to turn out differently than they did. I don't know if this is the final end to this series, and I hope it isn't, but I will be very sad if this is how it ends.

I did not enjoy it as much as Demon Possession, but it kept my attention only because I was expecting things to turn out differently than they did. I don't know if this is the final end to this series, and I hope it isn't, but I will be very sad if this is how it ends.

First, I really did not like Zoey as a character at all. The only role she really played was helping translate the book, which was an accident. I honestly think we could have done without her character. Any one of the other characters, or even just the witch herself, could have ended up gaining the power of translation by "accident." I did like that Kyra ended up being on Earth. That was refreshing since the rest of the characters were from different places around the galaxy.

Secondly, these books obviously give the female characters a lot of power over men, but also in their position over their subjects. I wanted to see more interaction between the sisters and their people. Kyra took command of most of the planning with the allies, but I wanted to see some sort of balance of power between the three of them, even if that meant that they take different jobs within the restoration and negotiations of their planet/war. It is clear that all three of them are independent in their own stories at times, but in this one they all seemed to highly depend too much on their mates. These are suppose to be strong female characters and if they are going to have so much power in the end to finish a war that barely even seemed to have started, I wish they had been portrayed as "damsels in distress" a little less and more as warrior princesses.

Speaking of the war, it seemed to come out of no where, and then all of a sudden the sisters are gathering their magic together and the war is over. I like the magic that was used between the four characters to end the battle, but I did not like how it started so suddenly and ended just as quickly. It did show the sisters' strength together, but I would have liked it even more if there had been a conflict in the middle of the battle. For example, it would have been heartbreaking, but awesome if one of the main characters (other than Ethan) was fatally injured. It would have put a twist on how everyone on the battle field would have been feeling at the time, it would have distracted them and made them weak, pushing the sisters to summon up their magical strength. We didn't know that Ethan was weak until after the battle was over, and by then they had a chance to get him to safety. However, if Sonya or another beloved character (god-forbid Sebastian or Cale) had been killed off during battle the sisters' rage, pain, and heartbreak would have been even more compelling, pushing them over "the edge," causing that blinding magic to kill off the enemy. Yes, we would have lost major characters and readers would be furious, but the strength of the sisters would still be intact and more powerful than ever, which is what I think this story lacked for me in the end. Honestly, I would have liked to see the girls overcome the loss of one of their men. It would show a weakness, but also show that they are capable of taking care of themselves. They do lose their father and grieve over him, but the entire series seems to hint at the fact that he isn't going to pull through, so we aren't really surprised that he dies.

The sex is hott and steamy, as always. Who doesn't love that? My boyfriend loves the fact that I came across this series because he thinks it's cute when I get flustered during the intimate parts.

The constant possession the men have over the women is irritating at this point, in my opinion. I really wanted to see the female characters take the lead in this book, and for the most part Kyra did, but I hoped that the other two would have had more strength at least by the time the battle rolled around. I got enough of the demons' strengths and their constant need to protect the sisters in the last two books, and really had hoped this one would have been about the girls' powers and independence without the constant need of their mates. It's great to have a strong man behind you, but their possessiveness is frustrating and sickening at times. It made it way to hard to believe that the princesses had any strength of their own. In each book you can see their individual strength, but in this book all I could see was the girls being shielded by men every time they breathed.

Clearly, my favorite character at this point is Sonya. She is the only strong, independent female. Even with her feelings for Ethan, she maintains her independence and badass attitude. I love that she was sexually innocent until Ethan, and that we are left wondering if she mated with him or not. Her relationship wasn't made the center of attention like the other girls' relationships, her strength was shown the entire time, and it was only nearing the end that she started feeling protective over him. There are clearly some hidden emotional issues that Sonya is dealing with, which I am still curious about. For the most part, she keeps her cool and pushes her emotions aside until her job is done. It's nice that she is guarded, but also opens up to Ethan at times. I wish there had been more of her characteristics shared with the other females in this story. I was also glad that Ethan was in a coma after he used up a lot of his own energy during the battle because it suggests a not-so-happy ending.

Finally, I don't know how I feel about Cale being King. I think his and the other demon men have shown enough of their masculinity at this point, and I wish that this position had not been given to him. It would have given Kyra more strength of her own as Queen.

The relationships are great, minus some of the overprotective parts. The sex is awesome, as always. The description of people, places, and things is detailed, but not overwhelming. I suppose I'm just not thrilled that this story is, for the most part, ending "happily-ever-after." I think there is a lack of tragedy. Like I mentioned before, killing of main characters would have pissed off a lot of people, but I think it would have made the story better and the female characters stronger. I struggled with what to rate this story as because I love the author and I love the series. I'm just so disappointed with the ending. Even if this isn't the final book in the series, I really wish there had been something to totally throw me off during the battle scene. Maybe there will be a twist in other books to come, if this series continues, but it would have been nice to see it in this one.

If I had it my way, which wont happen, I would want the battle to be bloodier and longer. I would have killed off one or two of the main characters. Examples: 1. Sonya dies while Ethan is in a coma...Wouldn't that be romantically tragic? 2. Cale or Sebastian dies as the sisters are attempting to reach each other to harness their powers, causing one of them to struggle emotionally. I would have chosen Cale just because we led up to his and Kyra's romance, but he had not mated with her yet. It would infuriate readers & Kyra would take on her position as Queen alone. or 3. Kill off Zoey along with one of the other major characters that way you have two major deaths that affect at least one of the sisters. Thank God I don't get to chose who lives and who dies because the audience would be really mad at me ;)

I LOVED the first and second book in this series. This one, the third, I liked, but didn't love as much. In fact, I think I liked it as much as I did only as an after effect of the previous stories.

What I liked:

I've been a fan of Kiersten Fay's 'Shadow Quest' series since first coming across her self-published novel 'Demon Possession'. It was chock full of spelling/grammatical errors, but it also harbored an interesting story with likable characters and I eagerly picked up the next book, 'Demon Slave' (which just as good if not better than the first) when it was released. I don´t know why I didn´t really enjoyed ready Demon Slave but I´m so glad it didn´t keep me from reading Demon Retribution.
Kyra is a great character and I already loved Cale.
A good point is that we finally get to discover more about Elvon and everything that happened while the 3 princesses where away.
So, really, the 5 stars are well deserved. Can´t wait to read Demon Untamed!! When is the realease date?????????????1111

Third book in the Shadow Quest series and won't be the last, given the unfinished Sonya/Ethan conflict. I've stuck with this space opera-ish story for the characters and their imaginative alien attributes and abilities. There was some cool space hopping in this one--I would've loved to have experienced more of the Uli Rings space city--making this as much a planetary romance as a paranormal/sci-fi romance. Kiersten Fay has imagined a world that I want to exist in! I am a huge fan of this series.

The search for the third and final sister Kyra continues in Demon Retribution. Kyra has been on planet earth... which I loved. Fay was creative and funny when introducing Cale to the ways of us earthlings :)

Loved Cale and Kyra's story. Them getting together on earth and journeying back to Kyra's homeland, all the time fighting the attraction and learning more about each other and the usual intermittent banter of the other characters we love. Sonja and Ethan are also pretty hot in this story! Can't wait for the next book. This series is a good mix of proper sci fi with romance woven through.

LOVED this book from start to finish! A wonderful edition to the Shadow Quest series! This series is a blast!

Again, my one complaint, grammatical errors are littered throughout the book! Ms. Fay needs a good grammatical editor! Please! It was so annoying. However, I could ignore them b/c I loved the story so much!

I live that this book wasn't all about the mating mark. But about actually falling in love.

And the startrek references had me laughing.

It didn't quite live up to my expectations. I liked the start of the book and the end, the middle not so much. Felt like the common thread was seeing ones mate, then fucking, then rejecting. Felt too much like it was all the same. Perhaps this is one of those series that's better read with some time in between reads.

Not sure I'm gonna read the last book in the series so far, if all its gonna be is a rehash of the first 3 books seen through their eyes.
