"Lifting the Veil: Book One"

Kris Ellis thought that the time of arranged marriages was long past but that was before the Great Unveiling revealed creatures of myth living among humans. Now a routine medical test has determined that Kris has a mate, a werewolf named Rafael King.

Kris is fresh out of college and has plans for his life. None of them include being tied forever...more

The Wolfing Way started with an interesting premise but then it went downhill fast to something that should've been published by Siren.

A very good idea with some issues in the follow-up. The story is a little bit simple but enjoyable nonetheless. What got me was the use of incence in Rafe's room. Being a Lycan he would have a keen sence of smell, wouldn't he? Why the incense?

And then his room is described as free of smell later on....o_0

Well, well. That's just me and my nitpicking I guess. I love the cover!

There are certain things that annoy the hell out of me in a book. Tops on the annoying list in the world of romance writing are stupid pet names that have no reason to exist. Things like babe, honey, cutie, pookie, lover, and the like, are author cop-outs to try to show some degree of character familiarity.

In this story, other than a couple of scenes, there is no chemistry between the two main characters. To try to force us to believe that chemistry exists, the author incessantly has Rafe, a we...more

When the national fellowship of Lycanthropes shows up on his door step, Kris has a bad feeling. The NFL as they are called, was set up after the great unveiling to help Lycans find their mates. They were either there for Kris or his mom, since they both had been in the hospital recently and now had their blood on file. They were looking for Kristopher.

While Kris is relieved that they are not looking for his mom, he is scared about his own fate. He has a mate from the Unseen world. His dad throw...more

I'm not quite sure what to make of this.

Like many are saying, the premise was good, I really enjoyed the beginning of the book and Kris' character, especially how the relationship with him and his dad was shown right at the start. I'm a sucker for family bonds!

I think perhaps, the issue with this was that the plot needed more time to develop in a way that could really fulfill the promising premise. As it is, the story ended up feeling rushed and I couldn't connect with any of the characters real...more

Wow! Susan Laine knocked this one out of the ballpark! I loved the fresh storyline and the intense chemistry between the two heroes. Between the fast paced storyline and the sexy shifters, I quickly read this book in one setting and wished for more when it ended.

One of the reasons why I really loved this book was: the creative way the author got the two heroes together. I’ve read MANY shifter stories, and to my knowledge, I thought this book

I have read many paranormal stories particularly those featuring shifters that involve the 'destined mate' concept. I chose this book because of the unique take the author took on this.

In Susan Laine's paranormal world, all the other than humans are outed by a mysterious way of energy that tears down the veil between the worlds. Now humans and supes alike must learn to make something of this new combined world together. One of the transition pieces is an agency that helps the paranormals match u...more

Kris is about to get the shock of his life. A simple routine blood test changes his life forever, when he is matched as a mate to a werewolf. Now he has choices to make that don’t just include what he should do after college. Rafe has waited two hundred years for his mate and although he is desperate to meet his mate, he can wait another couple of weeks, while his mate gets used to the idea.

I found this to...more

This story is 200 pages on my Nook, and has enough plot to fill about a quarter of that. The rest is over-written filler. It's awkward, with too many adjectives, with unnatural dialogue, with contrived similes that are trying too hard, and altogether too much explaining and not enough actually happening. The 200+ year old werewolf keeps sobbing and tearing up, both characters are deeply hurt by fairly inoffensive comments, and to provide external conflict the author reaches for the tool used far...more

2.5 stars. Starts well with an interesting take on the werewolf/mating bond trope. The Veil has been lifted on supernatural beings. After a routine medical Kris is informed that he has a destined lycan mate. But Kris is only 20 and has studied hard for his future and is horrified and angry that a mythical bond could jeopardise his plans. After a phone call from his mate (Rafe) and time to think things over, Kris and his family decide visit Rafe at his Wyoming ranch.

Love the cover and the title....more

When I found this book I was very intrigued. Not only is the cover just phenomenal but the blurb mentioned mates and arranged marriages with more than just a hint of reluctance. I was eager to start it.

What I found was a nice story filled with the usual mates but with a spin to it because Kris and Rafael never actually see each other when they find out they are mates. It was refreshing in a way because of the world this story is set in and the organization that helps shifters find their mates....more

Great plot idea and okayish characterisation. There was some pretty obvious and overdone plot devices like Rafe nearly giving up cause he didnt want to see his mate hurt - soooo done 200000 times in the past by other authors. Or the brother being a mate as well (I predicted that mid book)

I hope this author continues to grow and really nurture those unusual and original plot ideas. I was drawn to this book because I was fascinated with the concept of being matched by your DNA to a supern...more

I really liked the premise and promise of this book, the author had an interesting idea on an old theme, but sadly failed to deliever. Like other reviewers stated it started out promising, but long winded with unneeded explanations. Once the families meet the story takes a dive into the pathetic, and the mc's acting like 5 year olds throwing a tantrum over misunderstandings and miscommunications. The author fails to flesh out the supporting characters infact they are all pretty much left hanging...more

Wow this book was like - a bad old fashioned romance, where the use of "poor communication" keep the couple apart until the end of the book.

It was supposed to be about a werewolf finding his mate, but i never got a true sense of the werewolf world. The way this book was written was very poor, the author was very long winded, the book seemed to use 3 words when one well chosen word would do!

The sex scene which happens 80% into the book, is so badly written- there is nothing sexy about it, nothing...more

This story had an interesting take on shifters and their mates that I found to be refreshing and interesting yet quickly deteriorates into cliches and awkward dialogue.

For Kris Ellis, a simple blood test changes the course of his life. He receives a knock on his door from a very smarmy government man claiming that Kris is the mate of a werewolf. Kris promptly kicks him out as he has his life ma...more

With one knock on the door Kris Ellis's life has changed forever. Three weeks away from graduating from college with his whole life in front of him, Kris learns that he is the mate....to a werewolf. Refusing to forced into a relationship built on hormones and DNA and not on choice or love he won't listen to anything the "marriage broker" has to say. But after a late night phone call from his "mate" Kris finally agrees to meet Rafael at his ranch and see what happens.

I don't mind insta-love and mating, since it was clear from the blurb, I knew what I was getting.
The overuse of the the name 'Honey' a total of 31 times in this rather short story and 'mate' 104 times did get annoying.
And the father was only able to speak 'coolly' !
I also found the story rather wordy, I mean a lot of words were used to describe the scene and emotions, it got to the point I was only reading every third word, because it was too much.
And the sex- the description of it pulled m...more

First time read for author Susan Laine. Must say, while there were a few places the wording struck me odd, overall a very good read.

I would have liked more explanation on how a simple blood test helps confirm mates. And Rafe's hot and cold reactions were a tad bothersome for a shifter but Kris learns that he is still himself with Rafe filling an emptiness he didn't know existed. Insta-attractedness quickly leads to love with a few bumps in the road.

FAB book. Couldn't stop reading once I started even though I was sitting shivering in an unheated house but didn't want to take time out from reading to go and put some heating on!! LOVED the premise of the 'unveiling', the 'NFL' and the whole lycan world. Both main characters were beautifully drawn - and I also liked many of the minor ones. Can't wait to read the brother's story!!!

If I could rate the cover that would be a 5 stars for sure, I love it.
The story line was very interesting, something different, I like the part that you can also find your mate from a blood test.
Quite short, and it didn't reach it's full potential, although I enjoyed it.
Looking forward for the next sequel and I hope the author will get better and better with this series.

I wanted to love this book. The idea is interesting, a fresh take on "fated mates." But the plot didn't live up to the idea. The back and forth was off between the characters, to the point where it became confusing. They'd say one thing and do another. It became frustrating to finish, rather than enjoyable to read.
Chris
Ok paranormal m/m romance about a guy about to graduate from college who discovers he's the fated mate of a werewolf and is afraid that all his choices are about to being taken away. As others have noted, this started promisingly, but deteriorated into near-purple prose and cliches.

Really interesting premise with the Veil. From the cover it appears that the story is the first in a series, so I'll hold my final judgement until I've read more.

This is the first title I've read from the author, so I'll definitely give her another go …

This story was a light unrealistic romance between a human Kris and a werewolf Rafael. Don't know why, but this story wasn't speaking to me, everything was a bit to mechanical and bland. Overall, this story is cold and emotionally unrealistic.

I have come to the conclusion that most shifter romances are not for me! I was tempted by the blurb and it started so well an intriguing setup with a different take on the usual shifter stories but sadly it didn't manage to continue with the unusual or deliver in the end. A light read with some enjoyable aspects, recommended for shifter fans who don't mind the same old pet peeves.
