I think it's unfortunate the title implies this book is a manuel on how to get skinny...because it's really a lot more about helath and nutrition! I love Bob Harper and have several of his workout DVDs. I love his 20 rules in the book. Most are fairly basic nutrition 101 type rules, but they are simply put and well explained! I like that he has a co-writer who kind of helps him elaborate on the scientific aspects of his rules. There are also menus and recipes in the book and unlike most diet/nut...more

Like the rules format. Being goal oriented, it provides a step by step guide for living. This only covered food and really did not get into the physical component which is what I was looking for. Go onto Bobharper.com for this element of lifestyle. Here are the rules and the book obviously goes into more details...

1. Drink large glass of water (16 oz.) before every meal and snacks--5 a day
2. Don't drink your calories--stay away from fruit juices and sodas that are high in sugar. 2 cups coffee ok...more

This is actually a very quick read! I liked the rules, and feel that I can easily abide by 18 of the 20. I think that many of the rules are easy for most people-learning to drink one glass of water before each meal, learning portion size, eating veggies, eating apples/berries, eating breakfast, protein with every meal etc. If you're someone like me who is already at a healthy weight, the rules are already in place, but I like the reminder and reading WHY it's important to reiterate in my mind wh...more

I LOVED this book!!! Bob Harper, along with all of "The Biggest Loser" coaches and competitors, has always impressed me! That show is so inspiring. While I am not overweight, I totally re-did my diet about a year ago, cutting out a lot of carbohydrates, processed foods, and extra sugars. Since that time, I have also cut portions tremendously, which has been hard but worth it. This year, from May to September, I lost 12 lbs. My goal is to lose another 10-15 lbs just to feel better about myself, h...more

I know the title sounds lame. When I was trying to decide if I would read this or not, I read a review that said the title is misleading because it's really just rules for staying healthy and smart--not all about getting "skinny." I got in to watching Biggest Loser a few seasons ago, and I kind of really like Bob so I decided to give the book a try!

I feel like there are a lot of good basic principles to healthy eating in here: drink a large glass of water before every meal, don't drink your calo...more

The Skinny Rules as the name implies is a diet book. A diet book by a big name celebrity of the diet industry. Bob Harper of The Biggest Loser. The book presents a set of twenty rules to change eating habits and lead to a healthier lifestyle. The rest of the book is a set of menus and recipes to support the eating rules.

My reaction to the book is based partially on my reaction to the rules presented. Some are basic common...more

The Skinny Rules: The Simple, Nonnegotiable Principles for Getting to Thin

My daughter and I have a summer challenge to see who can read the most this summer. While at the library recently , I glanced at the title of one book and thought okay, why not. The book was The Skinny Rules: The Simple, Nonnegotiable Principles for Getting to Thin. The author is Bob Harper, one of the trainers on The Biggest Loser series. I am not a fan of the show, and thought Bob Greene, Oprah’s long ago buddy was the t...more

Let me start by saying that this will not be an unbiased review. I'm obsessed with Bob Harper. Like, if I lived anywhere near him I'd stalk him obsessed. So, take this with that in mind. I checked this book out from the library to see what I thought before buying it, and once I was finished I went out and picked up my own copy. I didn't do that purely out of obsession, the book is really good. Bob's sense of humor comes out in the book so it is very easy and fun to read. These rules are going to...more

I read diet books like I read parenting books: never looking to adopt a whole new system, just looking for a few tips for tweaking the one I already have.

And maybe the reason I liked this book is because Harper's system is very close to the one I already have. What does he advise? Eat lots of veggies, don't eat fake stuff, eat enough protein, don't eat too many calories, work out. Yep.

So is it everything you've heard before? Yes. But here that's a good thing, because the same old advice is deliv...more

Great rules for a healthy lifestyle, rules which will result in weight loss if a loss is warranted. Otherwise, the rules are good for anyone, heavy or thin. I only gave it 3 stars because there really was not much new here. The rules I will accommodate into MY everyday life are drinking a big glass of cold water before every meal, (I drink a lot of water, and never drink beverages with calories (another of Harper's rules that has been one of mine forever), give up white potatoes in all forms, ev...more

This book gives good rules to follow for nutrition and weight loss that are also simple to remember. Most of these rules shouldn't be new to most people, but it's nice to have them all in one place and worded so they are easy to remember. He did a great job at breaking down the rules and gives helpful tips on how to stick to them and to not get sidetracked by things like mountains of fries or barrels full of soda.

The recipes are pretty simple and don't require thirty different and difficult to f...more

I liked this book. There are alot of rules that are common sense. Alot I have already heard of before. You've all heard drink water before a meal, which has been around along time. Rules like eat protein, have a meatless day a week, eat chicken and fish, vegetables and fruit.

There are a few tips that I can use in my life. I like Bob's sense of style in writing and since he's a great trainer I would tend to listen to his advice more than some. There is also recipes at the end of the book.

I wish...more

I don't read diet books. At all. I had to create a whole new shelf that I labelled 'nutrition' just for this book!

This book got my attention because I follow Bob on Twitter. He tweets about nutrition often, and as I noticed that the food he really loves - avocados and hummus and blueberries and green smoothies - were also foods that I had recently fallen head over heels with on my own, it made me wonder if his new book on nutrition might be helpful too.

I was right! I love his whole system. It'...more

First let me say that I love "The Biggest Loser"...I have been watching it faithfully since Season 2. Two years ago we even had our own family "Biggest Loser" competition. And I love Bob Harper (not his tattoos, but everything else about him. So, I was really excited to see he had written a book and wasn't surprised to find myself #36 on my library's waiting list for the book. His 20 skinny rules are great and I know from my own personal experience that many of them are true. However, being a ve...more

I am nearly finished with this book, I checked it out at my local Library. I just ordered my own copy from Amazon.com, it should be here tomorrow. Bob Harper strikes again! He gives me 20 no-nonsense rules to correct my bad behaviors, to recondition my thinking, to help me establish new habits. Then he gives me daily menus using food that should be readily available at my local grocery. He also provides a lot of recipes that will be invaluable to me. I am going to make this book and this program...more

I wasn't sure what to expect; I've never seen The Biggest Loser reality show that the author is famous for, but this is an easily digestible diet book, and a quick read since half of the book is the meal plan.

It's all generally pretty common-sense advice, but distilling it down to "rules" is helpful. Thankfully, there's no trendy new weight-loss gimmick here; the advice is backed up by scientific studies (indeed, the book is co-written by a science writer), and Harper naturally interjects lesso...more

I've marked this as currently reading because I can see that I will pick it up again & again. Its full of common sense, easy to read advice & dieting tips. ALthough a lot of people find the title a bit offensive I think it works. How many times have I said "boy i'd like to be skinnier" Well now I have skinny rules!

Its well written, with good advice & easy to follow rules, menus & recipes. I've tried about a dozen of the recipes now & have enjoyed them all.

I've been a huge B...more

The best part about this book is that it's sustainable. You buy it to lose weight, and you realize that you actually want to change your whole life because of his thoughts and research.
I know there are a million diet and fitness books out there, but I really like Bob Harper's style. I chose it because I really enjoy his personality on his workout videos and upon flipping through the book the tone was the same very uplifting, positive attitude. He's like a super healthy friend that has no preten...more

This book basically is a list of 20 rules to follow to lose weight. I think that the rules are pretty basic and easy to follow, but I think that 20 of them is too many. I can't remember 20 different things, although Harper says that over time they become second nature. I think these rules are much more realistic than other books I've read about being healthy and losing weight, although some of them will still be difficult to do, like rule #4: slash your intake of refined flours and grains.

It's worth a try...no other diet has worked for me...the dash diet is what I really need to be on for my hypertension, but reading that book, I got no motivation, with Bob's book I get the feeling that I can take control of my binge eating/food addiction which plagues my heart health & other organs such as my liver which has been diagnosed as being ' fatty'. I'm 35....this is not healthy & it's not good & I am the only one who can do anything about it. Bob's recipes & menu plan,...more

Not my usual fare but I learned some things. Not really a diet book...which is so the point...but more of a nutrition primer and lifestyle guide. I could follow these "rules" fairly well( I already practice many of them.) and be fine with the meals. My fam, on the other hand, maybe not so much. I can try to integrate some of the foods but my kid is a real fish-hater(unfortunately). The recipes also contained many ingredients that are nearly impossible to acquire in my little corner of the world....more

Although I consider some of his "non-negotiable rules" a little unrealistic, I found the information he offered was very beneficial and inspired me to make small changes in our already relatively healthy lifestyle. He doesn't support all the fads of "no wheat!", "no fat!", "no meat!", "no this! no that!", but rather eating the right balance of food to provide optimum health and well-being. He uses scientific information on health and nutrition rather than scare tactics to explain the importance...more

I thought this book would be more educational than it was. Most of the things in the book, I already knew, it's just a matter of applying them. I did learn some about meats and grains, but other than that there are no secrets- deprive yourself of anything and everything sweet & salty and you will be skinny. I've lost 5 pounds in just a week of sticking to the rules, but it's not fun. 60% of this book is a meal plan and cookbook. I like knowing what Bob is eating, but if you want to know abou...more

I don't know exactly what I was hoping for, but when he said 20 things, I knew I was in trouble! I know several people who break these rules and are still skinny, how's that for "nonnegotiable". Maybe it's just the "getting to thin" that's my problem! Had I been more diligent with the "staying thin", I wouldn't need getting to thin principles. Most of these are common sense, but it is nice to have all of them together. I just need to get my discipline on..........then I'd see some real progress....more

A quick and enjoyable read. Harper has 20 principles to live by and includes sample menus and snacks to jump start weight-loss. Upon first glance, there are a lot of rules, but many are common sense and rarely followed. Some reviewers mentioned the title is misleading, but I don't think so. If you follow many of these rules, the weight really does fall off. I appreciated the way he infused research with humor and broke it down into easy to understand reasoning why getting healthy and maintaining...more

I love Bob Harper. After watching The Biggest Loser for multiple seasons I have learned to love him. His voice is prominent throughout this book and it flies by! The recipes seem easy and he holds your hand in a way that you don't realize he's doing it. I hear him talking to me in my head throughout the day because of this book, reminding me to drink more water and eat more vegetables, not to mention don't eat on the couch! This is great for any Biggest Loser fan or Bob Harper fan. It seems like...more

I have never seen an episode of "The Biggest Loser" so I don't know a thing about Bob Harper. I will say he seems very passionate about healthy eating. But there is no way I could follow his 20 "rules" just by reading this book. His method for helping me to adhere is to say, "Just do it." Sorry, cowboy, it's going to take more than that to help me learn new habits after all these years. However, the last part of the book does feature a lot of recipes, many of which sound very doable. I believe a...more

Really great and simple book for those who want to make real changes. I knew most of the info but it was presented so well I couldn't put the book down. It had little nuggets that stuck with me about water intake, the negative effects of sugar on your body and eating protein to be full! I like his meatless meal at least once a week- I think EVERYONE should do that! We do it reverse, we do meat 1-2 a week. I'm also considering adding in more fish to our diet, we rarely eat any right now.
I've plan...more

I actually finished reading this like a month ago but forgot it was on my "currently-reading" shelf. My bad. Plus I've gotten really behind on my reading. Trying to become less of a fat-ass is like having a second job, for real. Plus it's slashing my reading time significantly (because I'm not coordinated enough to read a book whilst on a cardio machine), which sucks, but I guess the benefits my body is gaining outweigh my brain's current degeneration. Okay I'm rambling. I found this book to be...more

Who doesn't love Bob! After watching many seasons of the biggest loser it is easy to see why Bob is such a great trainer, he really cares about people. The book contains some great tips for those just starting out or for people who may have hit a rough patch and need to change things up. I love his rule that you have to drink a full glass of water before every meal. I'm trying to do this and I can honestly say it's a great tip! His meal plans are really great if you need a lot of help figuring o...more
