But I don't hate Warner. I looove him.

I didn't thought I could possibly love Warner more but I was wrong. My God,he is such a sweetheart. That scene with the dog killed me. I recently saw Equilibrium and something similar happened over there.

I don't usually rate novellas/short stories but in this case I will make an exception.

Shatter Me. Shatter Me. For a reason I can't remember (Google searches turned up a "major pre-empt" and the movie rights being bought; according to my ARC, it had a $150,000 marketing campaign too), it was one of the most hyped-up novels of 2011 and I gave it three stars, though it has now been downgraded to two in my head. Destroy Me went on my list for one reason only: Warner.

I mean, come on! The guy has absolutely no marbles to speak of and in a book full of bland characters, I liked that. His obsession with Juliette had more to do with why I liked him, though; I find obsession and what it does to people morbidly fascinating. Besides, his character reminds me of one of my own and I want to see how another author did it. And so I dove into Destroy Me.

It's written in normal prose rather than the over-the-top ultraviolet prose of Shatter Me, and I was excited to be in Warner's head from the very start. If it wasn't clear before, it's clear now that he is head-over-heels obsessed with Juliette. He thinks himself in love like more than a few obsessed people do, but I know better! He's the kind of guy one would call the police on in real life, but here, it's good. Knowing the boundary between what's okay in fiction and in real life is always good.

The problem with this novella is that it is completely unnecessary and doesn't give me any richer knowledge of the world of Shatter Me. We get a little more insight into Warner's other obsessions like his need to be clean and some hints at how he grew up, but most of what Destroy Me reveals is stuff I'd already put together. His dad sucking? Check. The poor conditions of the people? Check. If any fan who refused to read this because they hate Warner skipped it, they would miss absolutely nothing. The Reestablishment is still a typical dystopian society with little to no plausibility and it is therefore too easy to put together what their world is like.

I'll be reading on to Unravel Me, which looks like it will be just as purple prose-filled as Shatter Me if the excerpt is anything to go by, for the same reason I kept with this novella: Warner.

He better not find his marbles and/or become a serious love interest. I mean it. If he does, he'll get boring and then I'll be done with this series.(less)

Okay, I'm just going to come right out and say it: I'm officially in love with Warner. I always did love his character in Shatter Me. For a villain, I thought he was so interesting and compelling, but reading Destroy Me from his point of view just was a total game changer. Everything I originally thought about Warner was completely wrong. I thought he was power hungry, but he really isn't. He's always had power and is used to it, but is resentful of it because it's artificial. I also thought he was bloodthirsty but he really isn't that either, he lives by his own code of honor which you really didn't get in Shatter Me. What I think is the most surprising about Warner is how self-loathing and broken he is. I was also under the impression that Warner was just evil, but he truly isn't that either. He is exactly what his terribly cruel father made him to be and he hates it, it makes him feel empty and unworthy of living. Warner feels so much loneliness and isolation and it just broke my heart to read how much reading Juliette's journal kept him going, how much he identified with her words and it really shows just how much they really are the same, both abused by parents who were supposed to love them but ultimately took pleasure in making them suffer. In Shatter Me, you don't really get this, but I honestly think that Warner cares and actually loves Juliette. He never wanted to hurt her, it's just that he's so unfamiliar with feeling love for someone else, never experiencing it first-hand he went about everything the wrong way, which he acknowledges all through the book. I can't express how much I wish this was a full sized book and was actually pretty distraught when it ended because I wanted more Warner, I wanted to continue getting to know him and seeing things from his viewpoint. He's such a complex and interesting character, I can't wait to see what happens with him in Unravel Me and I only hope that he can communicate these thoughts and feelings to Juliette and she can give him a chance(which he deserves, imo) because they have the potential to be an epic couple. Well hell, been stewing over this since I finished. I am just in love with Mafi's writing. She managed to "wow" me again with her poetic, addictive writing. I'm just so torn. So torn.

So, I'm at a bit of a loss at what to say here. I was very, very excited for this novella to come out. I wondered how Mafi would write Warner's point of view, and I have to say, I'm kind of happy it wasn't stuffed full of the metaphors we get from Juliette. There were also no strike-throughs. Warner has a very clear, precise way of telling the story.

I think Shatter Me is one of those books that kept changing and changing in my mind long after I finished reading it, becoming better every day, as it endured the test of time. I read a lot and I forget easily, it is a simple fact, but Tahereh Mafi never allowed herself to be forgotten. And she just sealed the deal with...more 4.5 stars.

I think Shatter Me is one of those books that kept changing and changing in my mind long after I finished reading it, becoming better every day, as it endured the test of time. I read a lot and I forget easily, it is a simple fact, but Tahereh Mafi never allowed herself to be forgotten. And she just sealed the deal with Unravel Me, which I was fortunate enough to read ahead of time and which turned out to be my second favorite book in 2012.

I didn’t like it… getting to know Warner, seeing a different side of him (not a better side, mind you, just one that made him clearer to me), and actually considering that he might be a better choice for our Juliette… Nope, I didn’t like it. I didn’t like it one bit. How can I feel so much love for a sociopath, a man damaged beyond salvation? Warner is cruel and frightening, but he also understands Juliette better than Adam ever could. The two of them are so alike, both abused by their parents, both living with so much ugliness on their conscience.

The life I know now is the only one that matters. The suffocation, the luxury, the sleepless nights, and the dead bodies. I’ve always been taught to focus on power and pain, gaining and inflicting.
I grieve nothing.
I take everything.

Because Juliette’s voice is so distinctive and closely connected to Mafi’s writing style in any reader’s mind, Mafi changed her writing completely for Warner, and it is the smartest thing she could have done. I’m not just talking about the absence of poetic descriptions and (in)famous strikethroughs, even the rhythm and sentence structure are different. This story from Warner’s point of view is clean and delivered with military precision, skillfully written and tightly controlled. Tahereh Mafi gave him a voice so unlike Juliette’s that there is no mistaking the two, and the contrast is made even more obvious by Juliette’s diary entries Warner discovers in her old ~~cell~~ room.

My mind is a warehouse of carefully controlled human emotions. I can almost see my brain as it functions, filing thoughts and images away. I lock away the things that do not serve me. I focus only on what needs to be done: the basic components of survival and the myriad things I must manage throughout the day.

And these diary entries… these words Juliette wrote down while she was in the asylum… even though there aren’t many of them, each and every one is so completely and utterly heartbreaking, her every thought, every memory is a new knife that finds its way into the reader’s heart.

This unusually long e-novella that takes place between the events of Shatter Me and Unravel MEe is an absolute must-read for all Mafi’s fans. If I wasn’t in the habit of reserving my five-star ratings only for books that really and truly take my breath away, I would have given Destroy Me those five shiny crowns. This way, it gets four and a half, but I need you to know it came very close, my friends. Very close indeed.

This will definitely change the view of many people, I'm in Warners team! I want to see whats in his psycho head. Its definitely shows he is IN LOVE WITH JUILETTE~ No need for a love triangle if you have Warner!

- He feels crushed that juilette never liked him

The cover and the name of the book speak for itself.I can't say with certainty, but I think Warner is hurt,and maybe even destroyed... that's why there's not even a tiny piece of hate that can be associated with Warner(as for me).
This is probably my most awaited book of the year. Well, except "Unravel me")

After I finished it:
Jesus Christ! I loved loved loved this book! I was reading a few pages per day, just so it lasted longer.
I'm very happy that my predictions about Warner were right, but the book was even better than I thought it would be! I can't say that I love him more after this book because I already knew he is more than just a heartless commander.
I didn't expect his love for Juliette to be so intense though...
His thoughts in this book are the proof that he didn't need just her body and power, but her soul too.
I liked him reading her journal.I liked him doing that a lot.It only made him finally understand what she got through ,to understand her true nature. He got a a very special glimpse to her thoughts which I liked a lot too. But not any more than him dreaming about her, especially his second dream ;)
I can't stop wondering what really happened when he was playing with the dog. Okay, I know it's stupid and I doubt it , but I really really want that encounter with Juliette to be real.
Well, probably Warner was just delusional but I can't stop wishing it wasn't a hallucination.

okay. I have ZERO WORDS FOR HOW IN LOVE WITH WARNER I AM. I knew I loved Warner since we first met him in Shatter Me, but Destroy Me gives us a whole new perspective of Warner that we never thought possible. There’s no reprieve from their curious stares and their disappointment that I did not die. I don’t even have to look at them to know what they are thinking...

For fans of the Shatter Me series that are hiding their Team Warner flag, rest assured that those who read Destroy Me will want to join our club. Warner confirmed my suspicions that he’s a hot mess not to be ignored! ~sighs~ After reading this excerpt of the series, I can now comfortably say I knew he was worth my attention. :)

Finally, a novella I enjoyed reading and didn't think was totally pointless.

This short story gave me a little more insight on Warner (and even Juliet). I admit, after Shatter Me, I was totally Team Adam, and it never even crossed my mind to think Warner may have been love interest potential. When my friends told me that he was not as evil as he appeared to be, and really, he was just misunderstood, I thought they were nuts. Well, I stand corrected. BUT, worry not my fellow Team Adam fans, I am still very much totally Team Adam. Here's why. I felt Mafi kind of overcompensated for Warner's evilness in this book by making him too soft and sappy. Yes, Team Warner fans, you heard me right, but hear me out before you pull out your pitchforks.

I am always down to see that the bad boy or the villain has a softer side. It would have been one thing if Mafi had just shown us that (view spoiler)

However, in this book, I felt it was a little too extreme. While it's sweet that Juliet has a deeper place in Warner's heart, he was a bit too sappy, in my opinion, as his thoughts and body reactions were typically what I would see in a dramatic teenage high school girl. I lost my notes, but what does his pulse racing so fast "it felt like a whisper" even mean?

So yes, the book does totally change my perception of Warner, but it kind of made me lose my respect for him as that heartless, fearless villain. I wanted him to be bad, and I wanted Juliet to love him despite how he is (one of those emotions where your head and your heart wants different things, and you don't want to but just can't control how you feel). And yes, father issues could have given him a good reason to be bad, but going too extreme just made me realize what a soft, cowardly, sorry excuse of a leader that his father believes him to be.

Still, it was a great novella, beautifully written and a great story on its own. I am SO ready for book 2.(less)

She searches me with those odd, blue-green eyes and I feel guilty so suddenly, without understanding why. I didn't want to believe Tahereh Mafi when she said that Destroy Me will change the way readers will look at Warner. I was inclined on being Team Adam since the time he was introduced in Shatter Me. I feel bad to admit that I was wrong and it's always best to believe what our dear authors say.

I can sum up my reaction to Destroy me in two words: HELL YEAH.

For any fan of the Shatter Me series, this novella is an absolute must-read. Told entirely from Warner's POV and picking up right from the cliff we left him at, Destroy Me is a chance to (finally!) get inside the life and mind of the young man we loved to hate in book 1.

What a wonderful addition to this marvelous series. I hate that there isn't a clear villain in Warner. Well to be honest I didn't completely hate him before either. What a talented author Tahereh Mafi is giving us such complex and dimensional characters to grab hold of and loose ourselves in. This book gives us such insight into Warner's mind and glimpses into his relationship with his sadistic devil of a father that you can't help but feel sorry for him. Oh, my dear Warner, I love you so much it hurts.

I saw right through him.
You see, I love it when my heart is right.. and right now it still loves Warner to pieces.
Yes, he’s the bad guy.

Warner! Warner! Warner! Warner! Warner! Warner! Warner! Warner! Warner! Warner!

Destroy Me was beyond amazing! Nothing but Warner, Warner, Warner and his feelings. Sometimes I had trouble breathing because of this awesomeness. I had to keep reading and reading and reading until I had read it all. I kind of wanted to start all over.
Warner as always was brilliant but oh so dark in his thoughts.

Oh jeez oh jeez oh jeez! Warner is getting to me! I've always known that his father was a bad man, but what I imagined had nothing on how evil he really is!

I couldn't wait to read Destroy Me simply from the fact that it was told in Warner's POV. I didn't love Warner in Shatter Me but I didn't hate him either. I actually found him to be intriguing because I wanted to know what he was thinking. I found his character to be intense and I thought he would be someone that stood by his beliefs. Those c...more

I find myself having all these FEELINGS for WARNER. WHAT IS GOING ON? He is an oddly fascinating study, with his obsessive thoughts and very particular routine. I liked Warner's internal monologue. As much as he tells us (and yes, there was telling us how he feels), we see these things reflected in his narration, so that the narration strengthens what he tells us. Still, I find myself wanting more of Warner.

Is it February yet?
