Blood of the Revenant
by
N.R. Allen (Goodreads Author)
Something strange is happening in Returning City, something dangerous.
Gabriel has never questioned things before. He knows that because he is a revenant like everyone else, he has to fight the not-family and hurt them to keep his own family safe. He has never questioned that the sky is always dark or that hungry things watch him from the forest.
But in Returning City, every...more

N.R. Allen’s Blood of the Revenant is a mystifying, and distinct take on the world of vampires. Her world is organic and the air in the book electric with her descriptive writing. The authors masters the rule of “show, not tell”—something YA authors rarely practice. In the midst of the creative world-building, the slow pacing and often repetitive dialogue can very easily be overlooked.

Blood of the Revenant is an interesting take on vampires. I wish that the idea would have made up for the various issues I found within it. For starters, I was confused more than not as to what everything was. The world Allen creates is captivating but the lack of explanation for the parts of the world made it hard to really get into the story.
Sometimes I struggle to relate to male protagonists, usually because of the writing. In this case, I just couldn't relate to the character. Gabriel was in...more

2.5*
Gabriel the ‘fighter’ of the family wanted to be an artist but for the life of him he couldn’t draw. Sitting by the pond one day with Baital, he began to sketch the scenery in front of him. He drew the picture over and over trying to get it right but for some reason he couldn’t. Each time he began, he would draw a tree; but there was no tree before him, under the tree was a girl covered in blood, though she wasn’t really there either. Everything was wrong th...more

Promising a completely original spin on the classic vampire tale, I was excited to dive into Blood of the Revenant. One-dimensional characters, overly repetitive dialogue, a stagnant plot and a lack of world-building has left me quite disappointed.
Right out of the gate, Allen presents concepts and terminology that demand explanation - the not-family or "others", the darkness and what it means to take it, how each family is divided into roles with every person being successful in only one of the...more

I want to thank NR Allen for sending me a copy of her book in exchange for an honest review.
Blood of the Revenant turned out to be a very unique book that sends you on a journey of self-discovery and hidden truths. I can’t say I’ve ever read anything like this before, and I’ve read a lot of vampire like novels. One thing that I adore about this book is the use of the lesser known vampire (revenant) deterrents that were prevalent in folk lore. It’s nice to see something like that in vampire ficti...more

Gabriel is a revenant. He lives in a place called ‘Returning City’, which is surrounded on all sides by a forest known as ‘Eden’.
Gabriel lives with his family – four other boys called Leute, C’hian, Call, and Baital. Each has their own thing that they are good at, and Gabriel is his family’s fighter. Every so often he must go to the fighting circle in the middle of the city and fight an ‘other’ – a revenant who does not...more

Unique but confusing. I found it very difficult to write some kind of a review when I failed to capture the essence of the story.
A family of 5 revenants. Each member of the family has a specific talent. Gabriel is the fighter of the bunch, but he dislikes fighting. The character is a bit of an enigma. I never developed a 'feel' for Gabriel.
I found the book difficult to follow, but enjoyable nonetheless. At the end, I was left with many questions and few answers. Perhaps there will be another bo...more

Genre: Young Adult Dark Fantasy
Rating: 3/5 Stars
Gabriel lives in a world where family made of five and each member has a role, Gabriel is the fighter. But Gabriel soon discovers that his world is not what he thought.
Everything was very well described and easy to picture. The fantasy element of a completely different world was done very well. There were a lot of surprises and you're never really sure who to trust, much like Gabriel feels. Gabriel was a good main character, in that he was fairly i...more
