First off, we all know how much I am in love with purple, so the cover itself was intriguing. The artwork is quality and fun, and the purple clinches it for me. And no, I'm not kidding. We really shouldn't judge books by their covers, but we all do it. And this quick judgment was spot on.
If you liked The Candy Shop War by Brandon Mull, you will enjoy its sequel Arcade Catastrophe even more. The level of intrigue and creativity is pushed farther taking the story in surprising directions.

I was excited to read Candy Shop War Arcade Catastrophe. I admit that I do own Candy Shop War but have not read it, but I am going too. I loved Fablehaven series. If your a Brandon Mull fan you will enjoy this book.
In Candy Shop War Arcade Catastrophe its starts off by kids spending all thier money to try and get a prize stamp. No one knows what they do or why thier is only 4 of 4 different stamps. They cost the most tickets of any prize a...more

It's good. Fun, creative. This one reads a lot like a Fablehaven book in a lot of ways. Similar quest for certain objects that unlock other objects, the good guys doing the legwork for bad guys, the shadowy magic police-type organization watching over the supposed movements of bad magicians.
Mull gives a lot of detail in places that other authors wouldn't and I can't decide if it's too much or a lovable quirk. The discussion on proper buffet maximization brought the plot to a screaming halt for...more

Brandon Mull is getting better and better! The Arcade Catastrophe is packed full of good, clean excitment and suspense. The story was engaging, the message was positive, and the characters are strong, honorable, and brave.
If you haven't read The Candy Shop War, you absolutly need to read it first. The Arcade Catastrophe references back to that first book several times, and some key plot points are dependent on a knowledge of what's happened in the past. This time, Mazog and John Dart are missing...more

A new adventure for Nate, Pigeon, Summer, Trevor, and the newest Blue Falcon, Lindy (formerly the evil magician Belinda White in the first book). I was surprised to find out in the Acknowledgments at the end of the book that Brandon Mull expected Candy Shop War to be a single novel and that he wrote this sequel because people kept asking for it. Sometimes when an author does this the sequel seems forced and you can tell it was sort of pegged onto the original book. In this case, however, the seq...more
This book is the long awaited sequel to The Candy Shop war, and it does not disappoint. This time around their powers are conveyed through stamps and you are taken further into this hidden world full of magic and wonderment. I loved how the story was conveyed and how you were given the answers to the questions the book starts off proposing piece by piece. The end is fasted paced and leaves you on the edge of your seat and I would love a third entry in the series. The stakes rise each time and I...more
This is book 2 in the Candy Shop Wars. Nate, Trevor, Pigeon and Summer are back in this book, now with Lindy who was formerly Belinda White. John Dart and Mozag have gone missing and the kids have to go undercover at a place called Arcadeland. They must win enough prize tickets to get a stamp for a special prize which grants them magically enhanced abilities. The owner of Arcadeland is Jonas White who will send the kids with stamps on missions for him. He is trying to recover Uweya and it will g...more
This wasn't a particularly deep book (less so than most young adult novels), but the story was action-packed and interesting. I wasn't a fan of the first Candy Shop War book, but this sequel, aside from being involving the same characters, is a whole different creature. Rather than being confused for most of the book as to who is right and who is wrong (as in the first), this book jumps right into the fight of good vs. evil with the lines clearly drawn and the only question being how the charact...more
Brandon Mull's stories always feel to me like the best kind of imaginary adventures we had as kids-- "I have this bracelet that can make me fly!" "Yeah, but only if..." The magical candy has certain limitations that feel very much like the kind of rules we would have made up if we were making up this story. This book was as fun as, or maybe a little better than, the last one. The end felt like a set up for a third addition, although I have not heard if that is true. I am interested especially to...more

Belinda White from the Sweet Tooth Candy Shop is gone. Mr. Sebastian Stott, a friendly magician, took over the shop and adopted a girl named Lindy. Nate, Summer, Trevor, and Pigeon have included Lindy in their group and enjoy hanging out at the Candy Shop. Life returned to normal after Mrs. White disappeared from town with her magical candy, but the next town over, Walnut Hills, has some suspicious goings-on. Stranger still, is the disappearance of magical policeman John Dart and magician Mozag....more
If you liked the first book then you will like this one too. I'm puzzled that I seem to be the only one of my friends who has read this series because I enjoyed them much better than I did Fablehaven. But What's not to like? There is a group of kids who seem to be the odd ones out. And of course they get bullied at school.
Then they discover candy that can give you all sorts of temporary powers. It's bound to be a win-win situation except there is much more going on. In the first book they stumb...more

Second book in the Candy Shop War series the Arcade Catastrophe is like Candy Shop War on steroids. More kids gain fantastic magical powers to save the world from an even worse evil magician who has all types of freaky sidekicks.
Mozag and John Dart disappear which is bad news for the magical community. A new threat appears in the form of Arcadeland. Kids and teens are spending all their time and savings to earn one of four stamps: a submarine, a jet, a racecar, or a tank. Nate and his friends...more

I must say that I was a bit disappointed with the first Candy Shop War book, however I was in the middle of reading Fablehaven when I read the first book of this series. And it isn't fair to compair the two, at least I don't think they are. This book was exciting and got me hooked right from the get to. I had to go back and refresh my memory a bit about which character was which, but it came back quickly. I was excited to read and postponed other books I was reading to finish this one. I would r...more
Brandon Mull knows how to write fun and readable children books. He also knows how to write action scenes where it is engaging and detailed but does not bore the reader. It has to be a balance of detail and discretion. Not an easy feat. I loved the first Candy Shop War, and the second was just as good. What a finale this book had. I was at the edge of my seat. My biggest complaint was that the audiobook reader was different from the first book. (Male vs. Female) It would not be so bad but their...more
Man! I was so disappointed with this book... We LOVE Brandon Mull and have loved all of his other books. The Candy Shop war (pre-quel to this one was awesome). But something was just lacking with this book. It was interesting- he has quite the imagination... But it seemed like his sense of humor and whit that is usually found throughout his other books got lost somewhere. Maybe too many pushy editors or publishers or something... I don't know... It was still enjoyable, but I would only give it 3...more
In this story Nate and his friends discover that one of their friends has disappeared near a strange arcade. When they go to the arcade they noticed stamps for 25,000 tickets. But no ordinary stamp is that much tickets. After they earn the tickets they are put into different teams based on their stamps, racers, tanks, and jets. After they were separated into teams they were sent onto different quests to get the keys to open the door to the ultimate weapon, a voodoo doll of the world. When it com...more

I'm very happy that Brandon Mull continued with his world of magicians, awesome powers, magic police. I'm also glad to see Nate, Summer, Pigeon, and Trevor make a comeback, along with Lindy, the younger, clean-slated version of Mrs. White. I must say that this book is not as good as its successsor, partly because we know that the man in charge of the acrade is evil, and it didn't have a clever twist ending that I've grown to expect from him. But all in all, an excellent...more

Arcade catastrophe was fun, but not original enough. It followed so closely the formula from The Candy Shop War. I mean, the villain even uses a similar magic food to the first one to dull the senses of adults so that they don't notice the kids using magic. I think this book would have been more fun with a different kind of storyline that didn't fit the formula of the first book so closely. It was still fun and pretty well-written, though. I did think the human simulacrum were a little too creep...more

I liked this, but not nearly as much as the first book of the series. For some reason, the making kids do stuff that's unsafe bothered me much more this time around, probably because we've been through it before. The first time, there didn't seem to be any other way out. But this time they should have found another way to save John Dart and Mozag (not really a spoiler, since we find out right at the beginning they've gone missing). Anyway, this one just didn't have the magic for me the way the f...more

Nate, Summer, Trevor, Pigeon and Lindy know that something's up when a couple of large men dressed in suits approach them after a full day of trying out their magical candy. They can only hope these men didn't see the stunts that the kids were doing on their bikes, but no such luck! The men let them know they did see them, but that they were specifically searching them out because John Dart and Mozag the magician are missing. The men know that the kids have had dealings with them in the past and...more
What a great book! The Candy Shop War is my favorite book by Brandon Mull, so I was very excited going into this book. It did not disappoint. This book was very consistent with a lot of the things that I liked in the first book. However, I think I'm still going to have to say that I preferred the Candy Shop Wars.
Just something about that first book... It has the original characters in it that I like best, the idea of magical candy is new, and the plot was more unpredictable. With this book, I f...more

I love Brandon Mull books! My library didn't have this book so I asked them to order it and because of that I got to be the first to check it out! It is another fun Candy Shop adventure and it is left open for a third book which he mentions in the acknowledgements in the back of the book. They are in the middle of a huge dilemma that involves the fate of the world. Nate and his friends must battle evil in this second adventure! Another great second book in a fun series!
My thoughts:
This book definitely has the signature Mull imaginative story. With stamps that give magical powers and an evil magician seeking to take over the world, the kids face seemingly insurmountable odds. There are so many strange and quirky characters and artifacts that it seems Mull has unlimited stores of weird ideas. There's plenty of action and the end will keep you guessing right to the last page. But, I had a really hard time wanting to keep reading. It seemed to drag on for a really...more

Brandon Mull has proven to be a star of modern Young Adult and Juvenile fantasy. He carefully crafts systems of magic and worlds that are unique, interesting, and intelligent. Mr. Mull's latest release pleases and delights. The stakes are raised higher than in The Candy Shop War and the obstacles are seemingly insurmountable. But resourceful, good, and true kids come through, risking themselves for the greater good, with candy!
Recently met with the author when he visited our school. The kids were totally enthralled with his presentation on "Imagination Can Take You Places." Another creative, wild-ride fantasy filled with humor, danger, and incredibly imaginative characters and situations: imagine candy that can give you superpowers! What a choice the characters have to make in order to save the world as they know it!
