My daughter has come to love Dixie, which we have as a Nook Book and she reads it over and over again so we were delighted to get a new Dixie book in Dixie Wins the Race. I was confused at first, but then realized it is the same character but a different illustrator artist. I think both illustrations are great and I really do like this one. This specific story is a great one for dog lovers, knowing about that excited pup that just wants to help. Another great one for promoting reading with a top ...more

Adult Reader Reaction: This is a cute story, and the first time you read it, you get as antsy as Dixie. The author does a great job building the story with action and a bit of suspense, yet repeating sight words consistently enough to help readers keep going.

Pros: Young readers will cheer for Emma and Dixie in this beginning reader.

The basic plot is very cute with Dixie knowing she has to watch Emma race and not try to race with her.

I just felt that the book was a little blase. The pictures really didn't hold my little one's attention. Perhaps if there had been a different sort of illustration used the book would have been better received.
