I bought this book because I have always had a strong ambition to do well in my career, but over the years I have found myself losing direction and purpose. I love my job, but I knew I wasn't doing it to my best ability. I'd taken a wrong turning somewhere and needed someone to set me on the right track again. And this is what Kate White did to perfection.

I have to admit, I was surprised by just how valuable this book was to me. I knew Kate White would be an intelligent, ambitious woman—you don'...more

Sometimes, a book comes along for review at just the right time. I Shouldn’t Be Telling You This: Success Secrets Every Gutsy Girl Should Know by Kate White comes along just as I am doing going through a bit of personal career evaluation, so there are definitely tips and tricks in this book I can use.

I like the structure of the book. It’s broken down in three chunks related to success: how to get it, how to go big with it, and how to savor it. Each chapter has bullet points, breaking down key co...more

Kate came into my life when I needed that inspiration to take up my A-game at work. Something resonated with me in an interview I saw her doing. That day I went out and got her book. It's no nonsense- straight advice on how to advance in your career- no matter what career you choose!

Much of the advice she has in the book I already know- but just had been lazy and hadn't been doing. Reading it and being reminded that those steps count- really sparked me into action. I had to find her and meet he...more

I found Kate White's new book "I Shouldn't Be Telling You This: Success Secrets Every Gutsy Girl Should Know" to be an informational and upbeat read. While most of the knowledge and tips shared were ones that I was familiar with, I still learned some useful insight. I am looking forward to sharing this book with the college students who come into the career services on campus. I think this book is a must have useful tool for an lady looking to get ahead! I am giving it a solid 4 stars!

Disclaimer: I received this book free of charge. However, this is my honest opinion.

At first, I wasn't certain that this book would be truly useful to me. I had a few jobs here and there and I am now studying full-time. All in all, I believed that most of the tips would be useless into my situation but I was wrong! I was surprised to realize that I still had things to learn... a lot of them actually! I've had several interviews in my lifetime and even got hired often and yet, I learned that I ha...more

This book took a pretty big nose dive to get from the 3-ish stars I was considering mid-book to the dreaded 1-star spot.

I probably should have known better than to pick this one up. What I was looking for was no-nonsense advice from a woman executive. What I found was a bunch of warmed over business advice written in the style of Cosmo headlines. I know I read a lot and most of the business books I read, regurgitate information but put their own spin on it and add something new to make it stick...more

I always have a hard time reading career books (zzz... boring!) but I did this as an audio book and I was able to stay pretty engaged in 30 minute increments for a few days. Overall, the book was pretty entertaining and I took away some real insights. I liked the time management, work relationships (boss / direct reports) and motivation advice. But there were some parts that made it clear the author didn't understand that not everyone works in a publishing office in Manhattan i.e. cultures are d...more

Kate White's new book is truly fantastic. True to the title, White introduces us to a new smart way of dealing with job interviews, cranky bosses, bitchy colleagues and handling work with personal life.
One of the best things that I loved reading about in this book was the true life incidents that White shared with us making our concerns seem a bit more authentic and not plain stupid. Instead of the annoyingly drab manner with which mo...more

This book arrived at the perfect time. A perfectly frank modern take on the working world. Many of the things covered here are common sense but other rules like social interaction, announcing pregnancy and when to ask for a raise are answered here. In an age where social media has made us more casual with communications, Kate reminds us that formality in certain situations is a must. I felt motivated, excited and ready to take my career in a new direction. She makes fantastic suggestions which I...more

A great read for ambitious people... lots of good insights for all levels and for both men and women. the corporate work force will get the most out of this book but there are parellels to be drawn with all working situations. A lot of her insights will seem obvious to those who have been in the work force for several years but its a good reminder and refresher plus a fast read and nice resource to have. I wish I could have read this 10 years ago as a lot of these things I figured out over time...more

Kate White may be best known as the editor of Cosmopolitan, but the advice in this book is far more helpful than the sometimes superficial how-to articles in that magazine. This was an easy read and the bolded sections in the book make it easy to quickly skim a chapter and grasp her points. I found this book a helpful book for me to read at this point in my career and home life; not only does White discuss how to "go big" in the workplace, she offers insightful commentary on achieving much neede...more

A slow read for me as I seldom read self-help books as I found them boring and I rather read a novel or a biography. Kate White is an excellent author, well obviously, so reading this books gives me great insight on how working life before, during and after would be like. She points out some really good points and tips and they are very helpful in many situations.

I like it when Kate relates her experience with the tips and tricks she's about to teach the readers, and amazingly, how they always...more

A lot of common sense career advice presented here with tips specifically aimed at Gen Y whom White believes are too casual and familiar in the workplace and this derails interviews and careers. While much is review for seasoned working women this is an essential read for recent grads intent on success. White offers sound advice drawing examples from her own life as well as from her friends and successful women such as Sheryl Sandberg, Hilary Clinton, Helen Gurley Brown, and more.

A gusty book that hits home...It's definitely a book that gives it to you straight. Ofcourse there are items that are the usual..i.e networking but great material on managing career and handling a career that will come with challenges... Love this book...

Especailly loved the sections where one will come across people who will become threatened my another's success and also how to look within oneself....

Great read....

This is the second of her non-fiction books that I have read. I really enjoyed her commentary and lessons learned from her real life experience. Some of the comments she adds to the stories makes you bust out laughing randomly and other parts makes you wonder if she is speaking directly to you. Great reminder of some of the common sense moves to make in your career while adding some new insights. Awesome light read!

This book came at just the right time for me, as I work on finishing up my Master's degree and figure out my next career move. While the copy I received was an advance uncorrected proof (and therefore somewhat incomplete) I still felt like I walked away with more confidence and some helpful career and life tips. I will say that at points it felt a bit too cliche and somewhat bossy, but I have found that to be the case with most memoir-style advice books.
Overall, this is a well-written, engaging...more

I was lucky enough to receive this book for free, but can highly recommend it. It was a great read with lots of interesting points and made you question how you come across to other people.

While not all points were relevant to my situation or the place where I live I certainly got a good amount of information out of it to make it worth reading.

Kate White provides useful and specific advice (along with plenty of fantastic supportive examples!) on how to be successful in your career. She gives insight into how to figure out what you want, and more importantly, how to go after it! As a very successful woman herself, White gives tips on how to balance work and personal demands as well. This is an excellent read for any woman looking to go big in her career.

I read this book because I wanted relevant career advice (plus I've always loved Cosmo). Im glad I bought the book because it is a great read. I especially love that the chapters are short (similar to magazine articles). This book has lots of great career advice!

The only downside is this writer is completely self-absorbed and it's annoying. She pats herself on the back throughout the entire book so much, it's almost funny! Her enormous ego practically bursts from the pages. Apparently, she has...more

Author Kate White did a wonderful job covering all aspects and all that is crucial to success. My favorite part of the book was Career Breakthroughs. I didn't think before that one could not be creating enough opportunities for him/herself. People Principles was another good chapter. I give this book two thumbs up.

I decided to read this book since Kate White is in the magazine industry (and so I am). I assumed that, unlike most career improvement books, this book would have relevant advice for me, and it definitely did. This is a good career book for those in a more creative field. I most appreciated the time management tips.

I started out as a fan of Kate White's mystery novels, now I am an all around fan! What a tremendous accomplishment! This book is full of wisdom told from a woman who has experienced motherhood, divorce, and success. If you are looking to move up, change, reinvent, or start a career this book is a must read. ENJOY!

Incredibly inspiring - some parts are definitely things I already knew, but there is a lot of new stuff that got me thinking in a different direction. Overall, I loved this and am actively recommending it to all my friends.

The tone of this book is great, conversational and helpful with many professional bases covered. Unlike other career help books it covers both entry level advice and how to navigate your first management position.

One of the best books I have read in a long time. She was a editor in chief at Cosmo and her writing is something I can relate to and truly enjoyed. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to be a "Careerista".

I adored every bit of this book and am surprised that I almost quit reading it in the middle of chapter 1. I'm so glad that I pushed through because I found all of the advice by Kate White in this book to be so encouraging, relevant, and fun!

I actually highlighted notes for myself in this book. One Amazon review said it seemed that this book was very "me, me, me" but I think it was great to see so many examples from her life and those she's worked with. I thought this was a great book.

As a single mom of two teenage girls - I need this book to jumpstart myself and then to teach these secrets to my daughters. Seems like it will be a tremendous help. Hope I win this book!

I read her other career advice book back in the late 90's and liked it. This book is very hip, and reflects all the technology we now live with. She gives good advice. I have read 2 of her fiction books and she is a very good author.
