There is no such thing as a bad Daniel Silva Gabriel Allon thriller. Some are just better than others.

It's hard for me to describe the book. All of the usual characters are here, almost like old home week. When I finished the book I had the feeling that I had read the last Allon book by Silva. Using the time markers that Silva has put in the 12 or so Allon novels, Gabriel would be somewhere in his early 60's. In The Fallen Angel, Allon is kinder, more gentle than in previous novels. My weekend reading; can't wait! I've loved every Gabriel Allon book since the series started. Just came across an on-target review by Hugh Hewitt, parts of which I thought I'd share with anyone unfamiliar with the series:

Not that there is anything particularly wrong with it, just that it lacks many of the delicious bits that I've come to expect. The whole thing seems a tad rushed, and even the climax is somewhat anti-climactic. Upon consideration, I realized that my 2 complaints are linked. Silva departs from his customary formula (perhaps an editor urging him to get rid of description and cut to the action?) and so deprives the reader of the pleasure of watching Allon and his Team Barak plan and execute a complex, breathtakingly daring operation. The wonderful characterization of the team and their interactions is missing; most of the characters don't even appear. Adrian Carter, head of the CIA and a great friend-and foil- of Gabriel, appears on a single page; it's such a cursory and unnecessary appearance that I can't imagine why Silva even wrote it in. Perhaps he was afraid of repeating himself with descriptions and dialogue that have appeared numerous times before? Whatever the reason, the end result is a book in which - to use an appropriate painting metaphor- the characterization is lightly penciled in, rather than fully realized in oils.

While I give Silva high marks for his double denouement, it's unfortunate that the rest of the plot seems somewhat choppy and disconnected. In the other Allon novels, one action or revelation organically leads to the next, but in The Fallen Angel one operation is put on the back burner while another is in progress- and the third is only revealed serendipitously at the last moment. Presumably, that's how things often happen in real life, but it makes for a somewhat-less-than-satisfying wrap-up.

Finally, I don't feel that Silva makes Gabriel as emotionally present in this novel as he was in previous ones.

So why 4 stars, rather than 2 or 3? Because despite these quibbles, The Fallen Angel is one of the most intelligent and most enjoyable fiction reads to come my way in quite a while. And it says something about Silva's talent that this book only suffers in comparison to his other work.(less)

Another well written thriller from Daniel Silva, this time moving from restoring art in the Vatican, dealing with antiquities throughout Europe and finally accompanying the Pope on a visit to Israel. As always there is good and evil and those who are good are somewhat compromised, like Gabriel Allon. Daniel Silva has been called "his generation's finest writer of international intrigue and one of the greatest American spy novelists ever. Yes, Silva has written a bunch of Allon mysteries....but many of the stories have not concentrated on this Israeli spy's talent as an art restorer. If you haven't read Silva...and/or if you love forged, stolen, restored art in your mysteries, this entry is not a hit and miss title. In the first chapters of the book, the reader enters the Basilica in Rome and meets the sampietrini , the head of the official caretakers of the hallowed place, who proceeds to offer a tour of place and its treasures. And we learn that the fictional spy and art restorer Gabriel Allon is restoring within the walls the famed Caravaggio THE DEPOSITION OF CHRIST (1604).

It's going to be a 5 STAR read....and I can highly recommend THE FALLEN ANGEL as your first Silva mystery. ANGEL has the most revealing portrait of Allon to be found in all of the series.....in only a few early paragraphs. And you will have ten or so more Gabriel Allon mysteries for an exciting backlist!

As usual, Gabriel Allon is dragged out of retirement (or in this case, restoration work) to help the Israeli intelligence as well as the Pope. The death of a young female curate from one of the Vatican museums could be the lynch pin to pull the church to the ground. Don't ask too many questions? I believe they have the wrong person!

Gabriel and his wife Chiara are not noted for being low-key. Anywhere they go, bodies seem to just drop out of the sky. While the Vatican would love for the death of the curate to just be a suicide, Gabriel knows better, so how to discover the cause of her death without asking "too many questions"?

Then there's what the curator was working on, and it's somehow related to either a terrorist group or the Mob. Or even worse, Hezbollah, the "Party of God", which makes both look like school kids throwing rocks. Hezbollah is noted for wanting Israel wiped off the face of the earth. So how does an ex-Mossaud spy get back into the fray without anyone knowing what he's trying to achieve?

From Rome to Jerusalem, to Paris, to St. Moritz, to Berlin, to northern Denmark, and then to Vienna, whatever happens in Gabriel's world could well affect our own.

All our old favorite characters are present to support Gabriel: Ari Sharom, Uzi Navot, and the new Mossad leader Eli Lavon. And all are terrified, for Gabriel as well as for their country and the world.

Only in the fertile mind of Daniel Silva are these answers and many more questions examined.

"The Fallen Angel" will keep you turning pages, afraid that you will miss one word, rolling and sliding from one page to the next and not wanting to wait another minute to discover how the Catholic church, Hezbollah, and Gabriel will survive yet another of Silva's masterpieces.

Of all Daniel Silva's 15 novels, this is by far the best. While this book builds on his past books, it can and does stand on its own.(less)

Gabriel is smart, talented, and tormented; he's somehow passionate and ascetic at the same time and navigates so many demands with skill and grace. His loyalty to those he loves, from Shamron to Leah to Eli to Chiara and many others, along with his friendship with Donati and "il papa," are fantastically wrought and humanize an otherwise remote figure. That he is both an artist and assassin demonstrates his patience and his skillful reading of complicated webs of intrigue, spies, and espionage.

The Fallen Angel stars with a death in the Vatican and Gabriel being asked to investigate (he's there to restore a painting). The 'quiet inquiry' quickly lands him in prison, then subsequent adventures traipse from Israel to Switzerland, to Austria and Italy and more, while uncovering a link between the Vatican Bank and illegal antiquities trading and Hezbollah funding. Gabriel and his team are trying to prevent a terrorist attack and also navigate the Pope's visit to Israel, with Gabriel serving on the personal protection detail of the Pope. The plot connections are compelling and keep you guessing all the way through.

Longtime readers of this series will recognize the usual Islamic terrorist plot device that characterize Silva's series with this character, but even though this is a consistent trope, this particular rendering is quite complex. The fictitious Pope of the Gabriel Allon world is a sympathetic ear to Israel and works to improve Jewish-Catholic relationships; it is one of the most enjoyable aspects of this series with the pope and his loyal secretary, Donati, both figuring as wonderfully designed and compelling characters. Yet even while the Pope visits the Holy Land and chastises Islamic leaders for failing to work toward peace, members within the Vatican bureaucracy manage to facilitate trade and financial support for Hezbollah, it makes for a lot of interesting twists and turns in the narrative!

This is one of my favorite books from the series, but I recommend reading them in order if at all possible, starting with "The Kill Artist" and moving in order.

There is a reason Bill Clinton likes Gabriel Allon (and Daniel Silva). The books provide an instant education on geopolitical events as well as dramatic plots and great action.

The books are largely the same; Gabriel is ensconced in some place doing art restoration work when a dire threat of some kind surfaces and off he goes to save the world. I've now read all of the Gabriel Allon books by Silva and I've enjoyed them all, despite his writing being formulaic and predictable. I really enjoyed this book though, as he went a slightly different direction. Allon is an Israeli spy who is also a famed art restorer. Time for the yearly Gabriel Allon novel. This one was slightly better than usual because it had Donati and the Pope. Gabriel was less insufferable than usual. I read this one super fast and couldn't put it down, however, as I get older I'm realizing the difference between not being able to put something down and 5 stars. Not going to repeat the plot line as others have already done so.

The given is that somehow the story has to end up with Allon and his team saving Israel from yet another potential catastrophe. The trick is how do we get there? A fast paced story with plenty of twists and turns: imagine cramming great artwork, Vatican intrigue, an Israeli spy, the head of the CIA, and Hezbollah all into a story that careens from Rome to Washington to Vienna to Jerusalem and back again all into a 370 page book.

I bought this book because it was touted to be like THE DA VINCI CODE. This is the first book of Daniel Silva's litany of books that I have read. It will not be the last.

The main character, Gabriel, is a very talented man. He is a restorer of art, a spy, and an assassin. Quite a collection of careers. Gabriel is called to the Vatican to restore one of the famous pieces of art. Although he is Jewish, he appears to have a trusting relationship with the Vatican.

I enjoyed this book and I respect and like this author. Well written, great attention to detail, as always and sometimes beautiful use of the English language. There was a point in the story where the author hooked the reader; however, the denoument and conclusion felt blase. I experienced less immediacy than within previous Daniel Silva novels. I worry about Gabriel Allon. With a past hovering in the world of terror and intrigue, the poor guy just can't get away from it all. In his latest thriller, Daniel Silva writes another winner featuring his renowned art restorer and hero/assassin (depending whose side you're on) that taps into the current political upheaval in the Middle East.

This book was recommended to me by a friend based on my obsession over a TV series called Homeland. I now understand that it truly is very close to the underlying premise of the show - which is based on how intelligence agencies of a nation prevent and uncover terrorist plots. It is a hugely interesting premise and one that makes for good reading.
