Volume 9 in the Death Note series mostly revolved around Light, Near and Mello all trying to figure each other out. Near's getting far too close to the truth for Light, and Mello has become too much of a risk to let live, neither, however, are allowing Light to gain any ground. Silly Light, you'll outmaneuver them someday. Or not, considering this series does end in like 3 volumes...

This series seems to never end! This book was the last one in my school library so now I have to request the next one. To be completely honest, I think this series is being dragged on a bit too much. Not that I'm not interested but I'm certainly not as nearly engrossed as I was previously. The book in itself, though, involves a good plot and seems to point in the direction of some sort of conclusion to this lengthy series. The illustrations are good as always and the genius of Tsugumi Ohba still

Contact did not rise to the expectations I had of it from the previous books in the Death Note series. It seemed to be chasing it's tail as Light had to solve the same problems, just now in the form of two people, Near and Mello.
One of the main repetition problems in Contact was sheer fact of the inclusion of Mello and Near. Since they were chosen to be L's successors, they are remarkably like him. We had to watch as they came to the same conclusions as L did, the same WAY he did.

I like this series very much -- it has real substance -- and I'd be inclined to give it four stars as a whole were it not for the fact that, dare I say it, I don't like any of the characters. They're interesting and yet repellent. During the first half of the series, the push and pull between Light and L was enough to keep one's mind off the truly unsympathetic nature of both protagonists but with L no longer on the scene -- replaced by the even more creepy Mello and Near -- it's hard to care.

Overall Rating: A++
Synopsis: A psychological/supernatural thriller created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student, Light Yagami, who discovers the notebook of a shinigami that allows him to kill anyone by writing the victim's name while picturing his or her face. Light's goal is to create and lead a world cleansed of evil using the book, but where is the line between an honorable goal, and mass murder?

As Kira's scheme slowly unravels, he scrambles to solidify his footing, aware of the danger yet aware that he must press what little advantage he has. The strength of this series lies in the fact that the villain is never uncharacteristically foolish. Desperation causes him to act rashly, but it's not something that would find its way on to the list of rules for evil overlords. Kira acts the way he does in each moment as rationally has a psychopath can.

In this book there is a New L the frist had been killed by Light with the Deathnote this L is more weird and out of the world and get's perfect idea's about his enemy's and partenr's both Light and the New L have idea's of how to kill each other and how they can figure out who is smarter than eachother. The New L is very curios about who he work's with and how to solve who is the Real Kira.

Aside from Misa's entering this has got to be my favorite book because my future husband is on the cover. I don't just say that because he is also hanging over my head on a t-shirt twirling his hair and playing with puppets. Yes, Near is my favorite character. Don't worry, if you hug him the worst he could do is chuck a lego at your head so I think I'm safe there. I love him!

I do still enjoy this series BUT...... the push/ pull dynamic between Light and L is missing, the Shingami have become bit players at most, and Light has become predictable or even perhaps boring. In this volume it was interesting to see the dynamics play out between Mello and Near as they pursue the same goal.

Light gets more irritating. Near gets more interesting. Nice to see someone(s) out-think Light for once. I'm starting to wonder how they're going to resolve all this at the end of the series... It would be lame for all the Death Notes to just disappear. I guess we'll see...

Do you think that maybe Near started detective work from the womb, and never really got to live out his childhood, so he'll forever be playing with toys WHILE solving complex cases for the rest of his life??? Or maybe he just loves toys. Yeah, I like that better.

Loved it, like most of the Death Note series. A little more focused on certain characters(Near, for example) rather then the main characters, but that made it more interesting to read.

Nooooooooooooooooo. Mello, why were you so reckless? The scar looks really good on you and I still live for the moments your in the book, but why why why did you just hand over your name? Why? Please please please don't die on me.

It's so weird that Kira (who is actually light) has to know your face and name?! why can't he just know your name or just know your face?!

It's interesting that it takes two androgynous orphans to take the place of L. A hefty absence of shoes to fill...

Okay, it's back -- the creators of Death Note haven't failed me yet. Everytime I think the momentem is starting to flag, they twist something around and I'm on the edge of my seat again. For this long of a series, I'm very impressed at how it hasn't dropped off at all, though I am a bit tired of Near's precious little hair-twirl thing. I get that all the savant detective kids have their little quirk -- L pearched on the edge of his seat, Mello always eats chocolate -- but the hair-twirl thing
