Overall Rating: A++
Synopsis: A psychological/supernatural thriller created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student, Light Yagami, who discovers the notebook of a shinigami that allows him to kill anyone by writing the victim's name while picturing his or her face. Light's goal is to create and lead a world cleansed of evil using the book, but where is the line between an honorable goal, and mass murder?
The note book has a series of instructions written by the shinigami, Ryuk, who owned the book, and holding the book allows Light to see Ryuk. After confirming that the book works, Light begins a killing spree, wiping out all of the major criminals whose identities are televised. Soon, this attracts the attention of the International Police Organization, and a mysterious detective known only as "L".
Through a stunt that kills a man sentenced to death in prison, L learns that "Kira" (the name the public gives to the mysterious killer of criminals), is located in Japan. L then quickly begins working to determine who Kira is. Light realizes that he must kill L, and it's a race to determine who will survive. ...more

The showdown between Light and L comes to a head in the middle of this volume, with some devastating outcomes. It is excellently done-- props to Obata Takeshi (for that beautiful final pic of a certain someone, especially), and to Ohba Tsugumi, our master storyteller.
However, the second half of the story, which begins another arc, drags a little bit. The intro of our two, new psycho prodigees Mello and Near is a bit unceremonious and the volume ends in an odd spot. Be sure to have volume 8 w...more

The long term strategy Light put into place two volumes ago finally comes to fruition, with results that turn the story on its head. The first half was a nail-bitter, between seeing who would die and whether L was going to figure out the truth before it was too late. At the end everything changes again, and we're on to "Season Three." Like the last change, it starts as a bit of a let down, but it the writer gets it moving as fast as "Season Two," it will be fantastic. I'm...more

Apparently this volume they decided to majorly mix things up on us, including getting rid of a long-standing character and replacing that character with two others. I loved the first half of this, but the second got a bit weird and jumps 5 years to 2009 when there's more problems for Light Yagami. So far I'm not sure how I feel about Mello and Near...guess I'll find out in one of the next volumes.
The surprise death of this volume definitely shocked me!

The climax of the corporation chapter of the deathnote saga ends rather abruptly. And the ongoing cat & mouse game between Light & L seems to end -- for now -- but two newer, less interesting folks seem to take over L's duties as master detective, perhaps in part to avenge him. Curious to see where this leads, but some of the punch is gone, without a serious adversary for Light's intelligence and plotting.

Whoa, hold the phone. I am not entirely sure I approve of a casting shakeup here. We had a little thing going. It was comfortable. I liked it. And now there's new characters? I reserve the right to call shenanigans if this doesn't work out.

I really liked it, but I was sad that L died. Near is a little smarter, but not as cool of a character. People of the world with bad posture unite!
