Book Review of Stone Fox

Imagine a boy racing for $500 dollars and racing someone who has never lost a race.

John Reynolds Gardiner did not like to read at age 14. He was a rebel. He did the opposite of what his parents told him to do.

In the book Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner Little Willy has a job to do when his grandpa falls ill. It is up to Little Willy to save the farm. His grandpa did not pay the tax bills for the farm.Little Willy decided to try to get the money in a different way.T

The book was actually decent. It had a quick yet effective character development and had a very heartfelt ending. It is the most effective story i've come across that was heartfelt. However it was not in my favorite genre. It did actually did a good job for book from a different genre and makes me appreciate that genre more and it is a very good representative. It was a good story and it is one of those books that i will go back to every now and again. Too bad there isn't half or quarter rating ...more

My fifth grade reading class read this book during our Building a Reading Life unit and we all loved it! We noticed how the author used descriptive language that showed us what was happening, rather than telling us. The ending was also a complete shock-- none of us could have guessed it.

Another important lesson we learned from this book is to "not judge a book by it's cover." We all agreed that if we had seen this book in the library, we probably wouldn't have chosen to read it. But, once we ga

This is a good book for intermediate readers. I think it is an easy read and it keeps the reader engaged at all times. Little Willy takes his dog to win a big bobsled race to save his sick grandfather's farm and he has a very loyal dog helping him in the process. This book does have a sad ending and may strike a nerve with a student who has lost a pet.

A boy named Willy is trying to raise money to buy a medicine that will make his grandfather better. He has one dog named Searchlite who he enters in a race with a grand pirze of four hundred and fifty dollars. He enters the race a wins, but at the end his dog has a fatal heart attack and passes away. He makes his grandfather better, and has a successful crop that year.
I would recommend this book to others because it's an easy read yet very good. The characters very well fit the plot and story

I use this book as a read aloud in my third grade class. It is powerful and the kids love it. It feels a little old school, but not in a cool way. It feels a bit dated and a quick tweaking might make it more popular again rather than teacher/librarian recommended to today's kids. Definitely a must read classic though.

I really liked this book because it always allowed my mind to wonder on what can happen next. This story can help children keep thinking on how they can come up with their on stories and what may come next in the story.

Even though this is a simple read, it is a complex story. For that reason, I think it is best left for older children--upper elementary and higher. The story is holds both tragedy and victory within a very small frame. I love that the author created the story from a Rocky Mountain legend that is reported to have actually occurred. This adds depth to the tale and helps you understand why a hard story often begs to be told. This book is especially effective as a Hi-Lo book, but any older reader ca ...more

This book is about a young boys courage to save his farm. His grandfather gets ill and ends up almost dying. But he then finds out his grandpa owns 500 dollars. So he enters a race against the great Stone Fox. He has never lost before. Willy the boy uses his only dog Searchlight. When he is close to winning, his dog's heart explodes and dies. Then Stone Fox makes the other racers stop and lets Willy crose the finish line, with his courageous and brave dog in his hands.

If you like races and dogs then you will very well like this book. It is about a child that has to win a sled race to pay for his dad's medicine. I loved this book because it is full of action and the character can relate to me. Also, since I like racing and action, I really liked this book. The4 last reason why I like this book is because the kid really set his mind into helping out his dad. I recommend reading this book to see what happens.

This brought a tear to every eye in my class! It is a short easy read for students. The boys liked the fact that the main character was a determined 10 year old boy named Willy. The abrupt ending was a tear jerker. I would have rated it higher if it would have been a more involved and detailed book but I feel that it was a tad too short. That being said, it is a quick read that students enjoy.

Such an awesome, awesome book! A boy who sets out to save his grandfathers farm by entering a race with his dog. A wonderful adventure but hold on to your seats because the author has a twist you won't be ready for! We weren't, that's for sure!

It was extraordinary. The end was really sad. But it was still wonderful. The words in the book were really passionate. This is a book you must read. I give it 5 stars all the way.
Oscar
I thought it was a very good book. It's the best book I've read. I didn't like the fact that Searchlight died, but at least Grandfather was lively again because he got $500.
Alyx
Good book but Iv'e read better it's too boring and dumb because it's just about stupid races the main character had to face.
