On the cover of this book is a pair of gloved hands wringing out a sponge. This book was about as appealing as that dirty sponge water.

The message of the book is fine - "Clean living in a contaminated world." I'd agree that as Christians, this is something we should be examples of. The problem is that the message of the book stops at "Clean living" and doesn't challenge you to anything further, as if clean living is going to make your life with Christ what you always wanted it to be. It will not...more

Craig Groeschel is a preacher for today’s world. He is the founder of a LifeChurch.TV, with fourteen locations and is on the web. Groeschel has podcasts available through the itunes store, and has written several books. Soul Detox is an excellent choice for many of today’s Christians, who have allowed the world to take over their lives instead for living a life pleasing to God. Groeschel does not preach he merely presents well thought out reasoning pointing out how many of us have lost sight of...more

Occasionally, if one ventures to plumb the depths of Christian pop psychology, it is not unfathomable why so many people cultivate a healthy dislike for the reading of books. There are many who read books that were only written in the last decade or so. If you belong to this majority, and, unless you have taught yourself the use of discriminating taste, the odds are that everything you’ve recently read has been poorly written. But, the degradation of quality writing doesn’t stop there. There is...more

This book has an interesting viewpoint on the world we live in and the influence that has on a Christian’s behavior.

How are our words, habits and actions influenced by what we see around us? The author of this book says the influence is great and offers ways to start detoxing yourself from the views of the unspiritual world that surrounds you. If you feel you need a refresher on ways to stay separate from the world, this book has many easy to understand principles you can start to follow.

I gave...more

There is so much of Soul Detox: Clean Living in a Contaminated World by Craig Groeschel that I liked, but I admit, in opposition to the cliché, I was drawn by its simple cover of yellow-gloved hands wringing out a blue sponge. If only cleansing the soul could be as easily done!

However, the cleansing of one's soul requires some work because we live in a sin-contaminated world. Just as exposure to harmful toxins can accumulate in the body causing disease, the toxins of sin accumulate in our souls...more

Life-giving and empowering words. The chapters that spoke the most to me were
"Lethal Language: Experiencing the Power of Life-Giving Words": I want to be the kind of person that the words I speak give life instead of taking it. Even in the midst of difficult conversations, words of love and peace have a much better and deeper effect than words of self-righteousness and pride.

"Mood Poisoning: Purging the False Promises of Materialism": I want to be completely out of debt. It hangs over me and is...more

I've been meaning to read Soul Detox ever since I took part in the study plan with SheReadsTruth on YouVersion last year, so was beyond happy when I had the opportunity to read it for NetGalley.

I thought it would be a bit of a touch up on the subject for me, but really it was so much more. Craig Groeschel digs deep into how toxic words, emotions, relationships and actions influence us and how it affects our lives as followers of Christ.

I loved the personal touch Craig had by mentioning his famil...more

This could be "just another book" about how to have a stronger faith and a closer walk with the Lord. It could be that pep talk, anecdote laden, "I'm just like you" kind of book you'd expect from that trendy cool pastor; the kind of book that wraps our ever present and omnipresent cultural and personal problems in new packaging but doesn't actually say anything new. This could be that book that stokes your pride because you already know the stuff being talked about, even though you picked up the...more

"Everything that we allow into our minds, hearts, and lives -- everything that we spend our time and money on -- has impact on how we grow, or don't grow, spiritually." --Craig Groeschel, Soul Detox, page 16

Throughout the book, Mr. Groeschel challenges us to review every choice in light of the Bible. Paul's passage on everything being permissible but not necessarily wise came to mind multiple times as I read through the book. While Mr. Groeschel's writing style can make it a quick read, the deep...more

There is much to like about this book. It is very easy reading. It is very easy to digest for anyone who sees the need for change in their life. Who may be struggling with issues that seem to spin their wheels. In reading this, I only could see behavior modifications which can only last so long. Real change happens, when we replace what we believe and think about those behaviors. I appreciated the symptoms that was laid out. Especially on bitterness. We can have bitterness when we compare our se...more

Very good book. Craig Groeschel brings to light many toxins that we can have a tendency to ignore and does so in such a way that is not legalistic. That makes me appreciate the book a lot. One thing I've always disliked about Christian non-fiction is that it can sound very legalistic and can turn you off to the subject. This book didn't do that. IT was a very easy and enjoyable read and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to try and detox their life. ~E

This is a great read! Practical, no-nonsense for true Jesus discipleship. Read this is just a few hours.
Craig is transparent and real in his presentation of his own struggles with toxic behavior and thinking, but always goes to the authority of Scripture, not opinion, when giving advice on overcoming the toxins in our lives.

I enjoyed this book. It wasn't earth shattering, but it did present things I already new in fresh light. I liked the Author's perspective and his writing style didn't feel preachy. I would recommend this book to friends who don't read a lot, it was easy to get though. I would read other books by this Author.

Fantastic! If you take it to heart and learn from it. Do not just read and then think: "oh how nice, I really should do that." Stop it. Dig in and let it soak in. Take it for what it is; a sincere and well written tool. Like the old cliche; "you get what you put into it."

This is just the book that I needed in my spiritual walk right now. Craig Groeschel challenges Christians to reexamine their lives and to rid themselves of the worldly contaminates we've let creep in. This ranks up there with Crazy Love for a Christian's must read list.

This books offers a very conversational and easy to read style. Craig "keeps it real." You can tell he is not a perfect person and he does not pretend to be, which gives his voice credence and sympathy. At the same time, he knows the Word and he is pointed (yet loving) in his call to live your life as if you were striving to be a man or woman after God's own heart. Good stuff.

I really like Craig Groeshel's writing style... Very conversational. What was very refreshing was his take on how non-religious Jesus was and means for the church to be. "Christianity is the only major world religion that was never meant to be a religion."

Soul Detox is an easy read that gives practical illustrations of biblical views. I read it in one day, and it is a great tool to help in the fight to guard the heart in a world that targets our attention on every front.

Good, straight talk stuff. Some of the same stories I've heard previously were used, but they were there to illustrate a point. Good companion to the lifechurch.tv four part sermon, but deviated enough to where I didn't feel like I was just rereading what I'd watched.
Lana
Another excellent book by Pastor Craig. This book looked at the toxins contaminating our souls...emotions, influences, and behaviors. This was a challenging book for me, in the regards of ways I'm being contaminated. A must read for all!

I'm surprised by my own rating. I understood the point of what this author was saying but I think there may have been so much ground covered that it at times seems contradictory to me. At the same time, because it covers so much ground, I'm certain there would be something in this book for everybody.
Carol
This book offers good food for thought. Exposure to poison and toxins will sooner or later make us sick, and toxins to the soul are no different. But sometimes they are not as obvious. An effective guide for trying to identify and eradicate the unhealthy choices we often make.
Lauren
I heard many people describe this book as challenging, and I can't think of a better word for it. With his easy-to-read, conversational tone, Pastor Craig delivers another eye-opening message. Great read for anyone who struggles with the toxins so readily available in our world and who wants to take a challenge to remove those things from his or her life.

Great book! Will step on your toes, but thats kind of the purpose. To wake you up to the power God when you are truly connected to Him!

This book is funny, a quick read and we will do the bible study starting next week in our bible study (Community group) next week

This book really challenged me to look at the toxic things in my life, which turned out to be more than I realized. I found ways to detoxify my life in every chapter of the book. This book was great for challenging me to live a more pure life.
Mackenzie
I really enjoyed this book! He has a wonderful way with words and provided examples that made these changes effective and doable! This book has changed my heart and I would recommend it to anyone trying to improve the strength of their faith. Incredible and will be a book I revisit many times.

Was a pretty good book with a solid foundation, but felt it could have had more substance and less "stories".
Jessie
My husband and I read this book together. We both enjoyed it, the author is honest and easy to relate to.
