This is exactly why the Internet is great. There are brand new kinds of journalism and humor and self-expression that have become possible because of the unique constraints of screens and keyboards.
Charts, by themselves, in almost any context, even bad ones, are great, because they simultaneously represent the modern fusion between data, technology, design, and communication which has only been possible for about 20 years, while hearkening back to the oldest pictogram-based forms of language. Some forms of humor are fantastic in one medium but not another. "Shit My Dad Says" was great on Twitter, but sucked bigtime in book format. Geico cavemen fell flat on their face in a sitcom but were somewhat acceptable as characters of an insurance ad. (actually, truth be told, the ads were kind of sucky too) Similarly, "I Love Charts" works amazingly on tumblr, but is a big FAIL in print. I hope I can recoup some of my losses by re-selling this on eBay.
This little book gets 3.5 out of 4 stars. It was a pretty quick read and did have some of the charts I love from the blog (with the same name as the book), however, some of the tales from the authors of the book didn't quite do it for me. Most were only marginally funny and didn't hold my attention too well. Clearly, I am either not hipster enough, nerd enough or something.
I love the blog the two authors run. I was really hoping this book would knock it out of the park. I was disappointed with it however. As a book about charts it doesn't give any suggestions for good or bad practices. As a humor book I didn't find most of their stories funny at all. I will definitely be hesitant in the future about reading books that stem from blogs.
Okay, the ones that were funny were hilarious. But aside from that, the charts were just kinda strange. The writing that went with it didn't exactly make sense with the context it was with, I mean, it did, but not fully, almost like the charts were stuck randomly into the writing.... It was entertaining though....
