You know when you have a friend who just loves to tell stories? Who has the habit of including lots of info, explaining a lot of detail, and pretty much makes detouring into an art? Whose stories are entertaining as hell, but sometimes you just can't help wishing she'd get to the point already?
Well, Karen Chance is that friend.

There is a lot going on in this book. Which is usual for a Chance story, but this book seemed even more action packed and chaotic than normal.

Fury's Kiss starts off with a bang, throwing us straight into the action. Dory is in a dhampir rage and is unable to separate friend from foe. Dorina is awesome. Yeah, yeah, I know that's not news, but we could SO be besties if it weren't for her little quirk of blacking out into nasty dhampir rages that can level a whole village (think Saya from Blood+).

Though Dorina's dhampir heritage has made her the pariah and enigma of the paranormal community, her skills are still quite useful to the Vampire Senate. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. While working with them to smuggle magical items and weapons out of Faerie, the operation hits a snag that leads to Dorina's capture. Though eventually saved by master vampire Louis-Cesare, she has no memory of what happened, but she has to find out fast or else the vampire community and herself will be dangerously vulnerable. This leads to new enemies, new revelations about her past, and ultimately a war residing completely within...herself.

She did make readers wait two years for it, but this is definitely the longest Dorina book to date! Karen Chance doesn't let up when it comes to the twists, turns, and action sequences that you wouldn't believe. Chance proves herself to be a master story teller with the continuous world building, complex plot, and super fast pace; it makes me wonder how she keeps up with it all. There HAS to be a secret.

For the most part I was really with it, but I did have a couple of annoyances. I sometimes felt like I was reading about a character with ADHD because there are a number of times when she doesn't complete a thought before something else happens. That felt a bit unnecessary because the books are fast paced enough. By the 80% mark it sort of hit a wall, though it didn't last for very long because the end was beyond stellar.

As much as I love her Louis-Cesare (they are probably in my top 3 ships now), the developments with Mircea were probably my favorite parts of this book. Chance's love of time travel is as present as ever. She skirts the time travel idea often used in her Cassie Palmer books by pretty much turning Dorina's mind into a time machine. Being 500 years old, she has a lot of memories she can recall.

We see romance all of the time in this genre books, but so rarely do we see such a the delicate father-daughter relationship like theirs develop and evolve over the course of a series. Absolutely it is unconventional, but at the root of it, we are seeing a bond that is unbreakable, as it should be. They are both hundreds of years old, so it's hard to navigate their relationship in a convincing way, but Chance does it and it works so well. I got some serious warm fuzzies and my only complaint is that I wish we got a little more. Though I would have liked more, what I want to see is probably more suited for the last book...woohoo for 4 more years! That's assuming she ends this series at 5 books.

I would say that slightly less action, more Mircea, more Louis-Cesare, or just less pages would have put this book on the path to perfection. These little things took it from perfection to NEAR perfection. It was definitely one of my most satisfying reads of the year!

I was so excited when I found out Dory was getting another book. She and Lia are my favorites in Chance's world. I have read Dorina 1 and 2 too many times to count, and whenever the wait seems too long, I go read the first 2 chapters for #3 (is it possible to wear out a website?) 29 days to Dory!!....It's here! Don't fear the Damphir.

Ahh, so good to be back in this world! There are a select few urban fantasy authors that really take their worldbuilding seriously, and probably none quite as seriously as Ms. Chance. She knows her vampire lore inside and out, and is steadily increasing the intricate layering of her fey mythology as well, both within this, the spin-off, and the main Cassandra Palmer series. Well... That was... Intriguing!Brilliant! and FUN!

Being more of a Cassandra Palmer fan, I have to admit that Fury's Kiss definitely raised my esteem for Dory. I've read the first 2 novels, which were Great, but for me, not quite as enjoyable as the Cassie Novels.

This was definitely the best book from the Dorina Basarab series yet! I love the way Karen Chance builds her worlds (slowly, gently and almost lovingly) and how she portrays her characters exactly in a way that make them seem as real as your irl friends!

I have to admit that I like the Cassandra Palmer series a tad bit more (because Pritkin), but I have to admit that Louis-Cesare is slowly winning me over ~~as is Dory's sass~~. I have to admit that I like the Cassandra Palmer series a tad bit more (because Pritkin), but I have to admit that Louis-Cesare is slowly winning me over ~~as is Dory's sass~~. He is exactly right for Dory (and Dorina) and is exactly the kind of hero this story needs. He's down to earth, gentle and Dory's voice of reason. He's pretty damn bad ass when given a sword and just a strong male character over all.

Now that we're on the subject of strong male characters, I'd like to discuss Mircea a little. Good Lord, Mircea, where to begin. We know him as this hot stud from the Cassandra Palmer's series, but Karen Chance's world is so multidimensional that I might have fallen for Mircea even more. He is an amazing father figure and I love how we can see his daughter/father relationship with Dory develop more and more. This series shows us that Mircea is way more than that hot Senate guy that may or may not be using Cassie for her awesome Pythia powers. No, he's a vampire longing for his family, wanting to protect his family and wanting to be loved by his family in return.

I am not even kidding when I say that Chance is the Queen of character development, because holy cow she's got my mind certainly blown.

I'm only giving this book 4 stars after all this praise, because I have to admit that I spaced out every now and then during my reading and when I came back again (only half a page later) I had no freaking clue what was going on. I have to be in a certain mindset to follow these books completely (i.e. mentally wide awake, which I haven't really been the last couple of weeks, ugh) and I am sure that I have missed a couple of details already. These books are so complex and engaging that I'm sure I will have to reread it again to fully appreciate it.

I need to reread it anyway, because I cannot decide on which character I'm in love with more. (As if I needed another character to cry and have strong feelings about!)

Fury’s Kiss is the third full-length novel in the Dorina Basarab series, a spin-off of Karen Chance’s Cassie Palmer series. Dory is a half-human, half-vampire known as a dhampir. By nature dhampirs are enemy to vampires, entering a killing rage and exterminating all vampires in the vicinity when given the chance. For that reason vampires generally kill dhamphirs on sight. It’s unusual for one as old as Dory to still exist; even more unusual is that she is working with the vampires to help solve the mystery of who is bringing faerie weapons that are lethal to vampires into their realm.

The story begins with Dory waking up captive in a lab, with no memory of how she got there. Her vampire boyfriend Louis-Cesar shows up to save the day. Unfortunately Dory also doesn’t remember who he is and, as a vampire, she figures it’s her job to kill him. Eventually they make it out alive, but the holes in Dory’s memory likely hold the key to figuring out the source of, and reason for, the faerie weapons.

Dory is a complicated character. She doesn’t remember what happens during her dhampir rages, and feels she’s two parts of a whole that have never connected. She’s being pushed to let her father, Mircea, go into her mind to help her recovery the memories of her attack, but there could be irreparable consequences to her psyche if that is done. Throw in her confusion about Louis-Cesar and why he could possibly want to be with a dhampir, and you have one messed up chick. That is, of course, why we love her.

The novel gives us the return of several characters from past stories, most notably her best friend Claire and Ray, a vampire with lesser strength than many in the Cassie/Dory world. Ray was introduced in the short story In Vino Veritas, part of the Chicks Kick Butt anthology and also available free on Karen Chance’s website; he is a needed fun character in a book filled with lots of violence, vampire politics and emotional angst. Karen Chance fans will likely enjoy this book as much as the other ones in both the Dory and Cassie series.

Recommended! Fury's Kiss was a great continuation to the Dorina Basarab series. The book not only revealed more insight into Dory's history, but also added significant depth to the main characters in the series' magical world. Rather than glossing over the details (a cop-out move), Karen Chance took the time (a much appreciated effort) to explain some of the metaphysics involved in her plotline, such as the ley lines and Dory's dhampir nature. So when there’s one standing over her, she attacks, even if it is Louis-Cesare who is just trying to help. With her split nature, Dory is used to blacking out but when a team, of first-level masters is killed, she must regain her memories to find out what happened.

The characters in Karen Chance’s books are like friends to me now and I just love returning to their world and being immersed in their stories. I was surprised at first that Dory’s memory loss didn’t last long but soon it starts to come together. There are several memories (in italics) which really won’t make a lot of sense until the end and it’s one of those books that would deserve a re-read with the benefit of hindsight.

The memory loss means you don’t get that oh-so-common recap at the start and I found myself going back to the final chapter of Death’s Mistress just to remind myself where things lay. Although I like that the reader’s sense of disorientation mirrors Dory’s. Just as the Cassie Palmer series has the displacement of the time travel scenes, Fury’s Kiss delves into the landscape of memories and I enjoyed the visualisations.

We learn more about Dory’s dhampir side and you will start to worry for her future but there were some absolute awwww moments which will leave you satisfied. There is also plenty of laugh out loud humour, fast paced action and a good dollop of sexiness. I cannot wait until the next book considering what happens at the end (not a cliffhanger but on-going character development that I want to see continued). Just please write faster Karen! 2013 will see a new Cassie Palmer book but I fear there will be a long wait to meet up with Dory again.(less)

Karen Chance simply gets better and better as a writer. This book is the best thing she's ever written (and I thought her last book, Hunt the Moon, was her best too).

The books clock in at 536 pages, and none of it feels like padding or filler. Everything builds toward a conclusion that I never saw coming in a million years (though thankfully no cliffhanger ending!) The pacing of the book is perfect too. It doesn't quite have the frantic, rollercoaster-ride feel of some of the Cassie books, but i...more Karen Chance simply gets better and better as a writer. The story is set amidst the ongoing war with the Black Circle and the challenges for the empty seats on the North American Senate. Dory is working on the Senate task force in trying to stop the smuggling of weapons and other even less salubrious items from Faerie. Familiar characters from the previous books pop up again, including Ray (now with his head firmly attached to his body) who plays quite a large role in the story (who knew Ray was a 'hacker' LOL!) The luscious Louis Cesare is there too of course, and he has made his mind up on what he wants in his future, even if Dory is not so certain. There were a couple of quite lovely moments between them, including one where he is 'little spoon' which I thought was so poignant.

We also get much more information on Dory's history with Mircea, and some details are quite revelatory. I usually look at Mircea's actions with a very cynical eye, but he was everything a father could be in this book and I felt quite warm towards him by the end. We learn a lot about Dory's two 'sides' and I'm really interested to see where Karen Chance will take this in future books (especially given the ending!)

There's tons of humour throughout the book, as usual, with several laugh out loud moments. (And *spoiler alert* a very amusing little scene with a certain lady friend of Mircea's!!)

A lot of questions about Dory were answered in this book, but it also sets the scene for the ongoing war, which I assume we'll pick up on in the next Cassie book. I cannot wait!(less)

Amazing! Without a doubt, Karen Chance has delivered her magnum opus with Fury’s Kiss. My ARC was composed of 536 pages of non-stop action, multiple complex story lines, and thrilling romance. The book is massive. None of it is filler. It could have easily been divided into two smaller books. It is to Chance’s credit and of course her publisher, Signet, that she did not shy away from the magnitude of this project.

It could have easily been divided into two smaller books. It is to Chance’s credit and of course her publisher, Signet, that she did not shy away from the magnitude of this project.

Chance writes with a skill level that is rarely challenged in this genre. Intense, detailed, and intelligent scenes that demand an involved reader. At the same time, her characters are robust and sympathetic.

Dory is notoriously stubborn and emotionally detached – most times causing herself more harm than good. She carries the proverbial “chip” the size of a boulder on her shoulder. In Fury’s Kiss, fans will be pleasantly surprised to see Dory finally make breakthroughs in several key relationships. Without giving too much away, Dory and her father Mircea will break new ground in their strained relationship in the most unexpected of ways. This story line allows Mircea to evolve from a secretive diplomat senator into a protective dedicated father.

Ever stalwart, Louis-Cesar also plays a huge role in this novel. Dory is finally forced to decide if she will commit to Louis-Cesar and the risk of being hurt both by him or by others using him to get at her.

Claire is back along with a detachment of randy elf soldiers to protect her. This story line goes into some very funny places.

Fury’s Kiss brings back several characters from her previous novels and introduces Ray, a seemingly third rate vampire trying desperately to stay alive (relatively speaking). Ever scheming, slippery and the punch line for every joke, Ray is the comic relief and Dory’s Ace in the hole.

When a seat becomes available in the Senate during the investigation, all hell breaks loose as contenders fight each other in open season style combat. Last man standing wins the Senate seat.

The villains have new toys including vampire zombies, ice rays, and illegal ley line portals. But most of all – the villains have powers that no one has ever witnessed before making Dory and the rest of the crew feel completely at a loss. A mysterious winged stranger saves Dory from the zombies and introduces a whole new group into the mix – fallen angels.

Do not be diverted from this novel if you are new to Chance’s works because she will give you enough background to keep you afloat but you will miss out on the inside jokes (including a short scene between Dorina and Cassie from Chance’s other series The Cassandra Palmer Series).

Fury’s Kiss is a game changer. Forget everything you ever knew about Dorina Basarab because a new Dorina is in town and she is larger than life.

I think the plot was very well structured, although I did get a little confused with the constant going back between Dory and Dorina until I figured out that's what was happening. At first, I thought a lot of the Dorina parts were flashbacks, things that had happened when Dory blacked out. Now, knowing that Dorina was searching for the Irin child while Dory slept, the back and forth makes sense, although I think that a bit more differentiation would have been nice, since all other flashbacks are done in the same way that Dorina's parts were.

It's interesting to see the vampire side of the war, because the Cassie novels sort of touch on it, but mostly focus on the mages' side of it. (I'm also pretty sure that Cassie and Dory have now sort-of officially met, and that should be worlds of interesting if they ever officially meet...) I find the vampire politics to be more interesting than the mage politics, but it seems to be turning into a full-on war with this book, with the Fey now jumping into the mix and the Irin.... doing something? Or maybe they were just there for the child.

I am so ridiculously happy about the exploration of Mircea and Dory's relationship, I can't even put it into words, and it will be interesting to see how all of what happened and everything that she learned over the course of the novel will affect her in the next one.

Kit... Kit is amazing the entire way through and he's just so frustrated and angry and tired that I sort of want to sock him in the face and tell him to take a nap.

The writing was solid, although Ms Chance is guilty of Google-French, like many urban fantasy authors. I couldn't pick out any major continuity errors or plot holes, so the series is still standing strong. Definitely cannot wait until the next one.(less)

I can never get enough of Louis-Cesare and I love the relationship between him and Dory. It's not normal. No. It's frustrating, hilarious and downright sexy. Just like them. Every time he screams at her in French I can't stop laughing -

"Tu me rends fou!"

"What?"

"Fou, fou!" He made some weird gestures in the air. "You make me the crazy!"

I stared at him. "Buddy, I got news for you. I don't think you need the help."

Karen Chance's writing is always so different and so uniquely her. And mostly because it's so fast, the action so real, the humour so good and the intrigue so...intriguing! I can never get enough. The pages fly through my fingers because her writing is so enthralling that I barely notice I'm reading anything. It feels like I'm living it.

But this installment in the series also had me tearing up. I've been reading Dory's relationship with Mircea for the past two books, watching them circle each other, neither wanting to get too close to the other, and I've hated it. Because I could see how much Dory didn't trust him and yet still wanted her father to love her, not manipulate her like everyone else around him. Which left every kind thing he did surrounded by suspicion, because he had to have an agenda, right? And I could see how much Mircea loved her anyway. And now finally, finally, we get a little healing between them. It was brilliant. Karen shows us so many sides of Dory. The little girl in need of her father's love, the insane dhampir, the warrior of good, the first level master vamp, the incredible friend, the mother (to Stinky), the uncertain lover. All our Dory. Just different glimpses of her that make her character that much more real.

And Ray! He had to be one of my favourite characters this time around. Along with Scarface. I just laughed so hard. Even during scenes of slaughter and mayhem, Karen always finds a way to make me snort and giggle. And was that a glimpse of Cassie Palmer in a Dorina Basarab book? You tempt me with so many possibilities, Karen. Shame on you.

I absolutely adore Karen Chance's writing, her insanely funny characters and her ability to make me forget anything when I'm reading them. The only issue I ever have with any of her books is how long they take. So now I'm insanely eager and damn-near-going-crazy waiting for the next Cassie book and then next Dory book and then the next Cassie book. . .

Here's to the best kind of insanity.

I almost wanted to check this as a comedy for the first chapter of the story which was just ... I had to listen to it several times to confirm what I heard.

Anyway as usual great outrageous Dory and Ray comedy routines. They are up in blood and gore but still talking in that warped humor. I love it. I don't think it's for everyone but it really just tickle my bones and makes it oh-so-much joy to listen to.

I really have to reread Cassandara series and catch up.

This was a long book, with a long look into Dory's life and her memory lapses in her bouts of rage. A good, long book with lots of character growth and background revelations.
I was most pleased with the progression of Dory and Louis-Cesare's relationship. I was pleased to see Mircea's early relationship with Dory described (how sweet!). The biggest surprise was The Consul's decision about what to do with Dory. That was completely unexpected and quite clever. I see the story arc for Cassie and Dory starting to converge.

I saw on Karen Chance's website (the timeline between the Cassie books and the Dorina books) that she's always viewed the two series as one. I hadn't felt that way until this book. I think some of that is due to the fact that the I had to re-read certain parts to understand what was happening. That's a somewhat common occurrence in Cassie's books, mostly during the time travel sections.
