Journey in Bhutan: Himalayan Trek in the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon brought me to a world I've never imagined. Trish Nicholson decided to sign up for a trek of around 100 miles with a pack of wonderful characters. She kept a detailed journal of each day, almost moment to moment from the flight to Bhutan right up to departure -- astounding description, a detailed and lush understanding of language, which helped place me there, looking over Trish's shoulder. The real-life characters live, breat ...more

I've had this book on my e-reader for a while now, and now I've read it, I wish I'd picked it up earlier. I became so absorbed in the journey Trish Nicholson took, I felt as if I was with her there in the high passes and pastures of Bhutan. My heart soared and stopped with hers and I smelt, felt and dealt with the heat, cold and humidity of the various stages of her trek. I saw the people and the yaks, felt the adrenaline rush as they scaled mountain passes on the edge of deep gorges and got ove ...more

This book is an exceptional example of travel memoir. Trish Nicholson has recounted her trekking travels to Bhutan, a small country nestled against Tibet, which contains a rugged and spiritual landscape. Her story is filled with descriptions that make you feel as if you are sharing her journey over these amazing mountains—from the stomach-churning bus trips, to the precipices from which there would be no return if one slipped (and people apparently have). She deftly weaves in her personal journe ...more

Bite size it may be but Trish Nicholson’s Journey In Bhutan is still a delicacy to be savoured. Right from her landing at Delhi airport where the heat felt like a hot wet flannel slapped onto my face, through chance encounters with wandering yaks, hair raising near misses in minibuses, clambering on all fours up the side of mountains then enjoying the wonder and joy of the view from the tops; Trish shares it all with her reader as though they were the mascot attached to her backpack. And then ju ...more

A really nice travelogue...though it's a bit outdated. It's very authentic and has some very helpful notes at the end. Whether you end up travelling there by yourself or not, the book will definitely make your imagination fly.

I don't know that getting to Bhutan will actually ever happen for me, but based on the detailed descriptions Nicholson provided in this easy-to-read travelogue, I know some of what I'm missing. I would highly recommend this short introduction to a completely foreign locale to anyone interested in adventure travels, the Himalayas, or Asian cultures. There are enough distinctions in this country, including pictures of local garb (which Nicholson also blogged about later), that it's worth acquainti ...more
