I have to say that I did not know what to expect in this book, but am very glad I tried it. The story is about a young woman that is pushed into an portal that transports her (not gently) into a parallel earth.

I was completely caught up in the story and can't wait to see what happens to our favorite people in the next books. Elora finds out that because she is not from this dimension, it has many benefits to her physically (makes her stronger, faster than the other people there). She starts to...more

I decided I wanted to read a good paranormal/vampire novel. So, I went on a mission on amazon for a book that would work... I came upon this novel (which was free by the way) and decided to give it a try. Boy, am I glad I did. I loved it!

Vampirism is a virus in this novel and the whole vampire theme was a backdrop as to what the story was really about. Lady Laiken was a great character - and the love 'square' was freaking fantastic. You didn't know who she was going to end up with until the end...more

While I enjoy fantasy, I tend to stick closer to paranormal stories unless it is an author I know and love. Well, I now know and LOVE Victoria Danann! My Familiar Stranger: romancing the vampire hunters is the first of a seven book series with books 1-3 currently available in eBooks and print while book #4 Moonlight is due out in May of 2013. Victoria has created a wonderfully magical world for us to enjoy her stories in and this is where it all begins. Once upon a time, in a land far away…

When I started to read this book I was immediately captivated by the story and how she had to go through a portal to another dimension and was saved by a knight. This part of the book was amazing so I gave THIS part 2 stars. The rest of the book was a complete miss for me. I started to dislike the book when the story stopped focusing on Storm (the knight that saved her) started focusing on a different love interest; Ram ( wanted to kill her). There's barely any romance between Elora and Storm (w...more

I wanted to love this book so badly! I really TRIED to like this book! But...
The entire book read like a summary! In the same paragraph she'd go from 3rd person perspective to 1st person from one character, then suddenly switch to 1st person on a different character, so, for example: Joe and Mary walked down the park... "I thought he was never going to notice my shoes" and suddenly I turn to her, and exclaim "I love those shoes!"

In addition she'd switch time frames! She'd be talking about them...more

I didn't get this book. At all. I gave it a 2 star review because I did enjoy parts of it and I really enjoyed some of the characters, but, I just didn't get it.

This Review Contains Some Spoilers......just saying.

I took a chance because there are a lot of rave reviews about this book. I must not have understood the description of this book. I took it to mean that there was going to be a girl sucked into another dimension that becomes part of a secret society and the whole book is spent ass-kicki...more

I both hated and loved this book. The setting was great, the characters were great, the story plot was awesome! And yet, the actual follow-through with writing needed to be seriously tweaked. It went too fast, many details were forgotten or added last-minute, and there should have been more time spent in between each event.

The characters were developed and personable. Though, it would've been nice to include more details about all of them. Perhaps show more about each of their personal lives.

I have seen so many good reviews for this novel I've decided to give it a try. The blurb sounded promising, and as I've read on i liked it. A lot...

The first 50% of the book was really well detailed and i found myself immersed in a new life of a girl who found herself in a new world. She seemed nice and i was sympathetic to her difficulties.

But then....

As the story progressed i realized that she could do no wrong. She gets warned for her own safety NOT to do a certain thing. She does it anyway a...more

This book grabbed my attention early on and did not let up. I was transported in my mind to a destination full of danger, excitement, humor, and romance. The characters were bigger than life, but I was easily able to relate to their individual dispositions. One of the things I most liked about this story is the way in which a slip of a girl, an outsider no less, comes into a staid, all-male enclave and turns it on its ear. It was an absolute joy to behold. Obviously, I love strong female charact...more

I read this book back to back with the second and third books of this series in a collection on Smashbooks.

These books took my breath away! They have everything I look for in a good paranormal book, and more.

Imagine sitting in a meeting of vampire/supernatural hunters, at a facility very few people have any idea exists, debriefing because of the loss of a team member. Now imagine having a bloody mess land at your feet out of thin air, so badly damaged you can't tell what it is, even when it opens...more

I made it about 48% of the way through, which seems to be where a few other readers have lost patience with the book.

I downloaded this as a freebie from Amazon for Kindle and it was a fairly blind reading. I didn't know that there was a love triangle, which is technically a love quadrangle since there are 3 guys vying for 1 girl's affection. If I had known, I would have skipped downloading this.

The reason I stopped reading was, aside from it looking like Elora was going to fall for the wrong guy...more

Elora Laiken watches in horror as her whole family is gunned down during a family celebration; saved by her tutor and friend Monq, she is pushed by him into a swirling vortex which takes her ultimately to another dimension. Horribly hurt in the trip, Elora is nursed back to life by the doctors and nurses of the Black Swan outfit, a group of knights who fight the vampire plague that seems to be taking over their world.

Set in an alternate dimension, one that is like ours but not quite, Elora's wor...more

My Familiar Stranger was a really fun read for me; it had parallel dimensions, knights, vampires, and elves. Elora is sent to another dimension after witnessing the slaughter of her family. After a really bad trip, she finds herself severely injured and in the hands of an order of knights whose job it is to keep humans safe from the vampire population.

This novel has so many memorable characters. Elora is beautiful and strong, she also has a lot of heart. Storm is gorgeous, thoughtful, and a born...more

really enjoyed My Familiar Stranger. I thought it was unique and incorporated a lot of different paranormal aspects. Everything from Vampires, time travel, dimensions, Fairies and Elves. The love triangle between Elora, Ram and Storm is definitely one that keeps you going. You really don’t know who Elora will choose. Will she go with her heart or her mind. Who can she live without? You really go back and forth on who you’d like to see “win” Elora’s heart. Another character who captured my heart...more

I don't know really in which genre to put this book, but it a good combination of vampires meets historical with a twist of paranormal others.

The story starts heavy with the kick-ass heroine Elora who is forcibly transported through some kind of Star Trek beam to another dimension with similar people, but just a little different than what she is used to. She meets the knights of the Order of the Black Swan and there the story gets interesting.

Although Elora is a mere human (she thinks), she fin...more

I loved the ideas within this book and the new world of rules of the Order of the Black Swan, a vampire fighting secret organization. Elora, the heroine, falls into a new world via a time travel/parallel universe device; she's pushed from her world by a family friend and mentor as her family's home is attacked in a revolution.

Sir Storm, a knight within the Order of the Black Swan, and his mates, find her; she's a bloody, beaten mess. While his friends want to kill the stranger, Sir Storm insists...more

Giving up on this at 47%, I couldn't get into the story! The summary gave me the impression it was going to be kind of a romance. But the romance there was in the story was poorly matched. The girl was dropped into an alternate world, she quickly gets better and they discover she is oddly strong and knows another world's more-advanced martial arts. She starts to teach and help the secret military-esque compound of people (this is where she was dropped). Her love interests consist of a potty-humo...more

Elora Laikin is pushed into an interdimensional portal just before an assassination attempt. Imaging being run through a blender and flayed alive, at the same time, and somehow surviving. Also imagine being dumped in the middle of a super-secret military base. It's the headquarters of an elite unit, who are part of a 600-year-old Order, and whose purpose is to kill vampires.

When she recovers, Elora meets Storm, Kay and Ram, the members of the team before who she made her "entrance." Interdimensi...more

I just have to say I loved this book! It combines paranormal romance (vampires) with a little fantasy (elves) and science fiction (interdimensional travel). Three of my favorite genres to read.

I couldn't put this book down from the moment I started reading. I fell in love with the characters from the start. They were well thought out and each one had endearing qualities that made you like each one in a different way; Elora for her perseverance and strength, Storm for his support and kindness, Ra...more

For a new author, she totally rocked this book!!!

Minutes ahead of inevitable assassination, Elora is accidentally transported to an alternate dimension similar, but not identical to her own...

Of course a girl could suffer worse problems than having gorgeous guys in love with her. Perhaps more importantly, in the midst of an epidemic of vampire related abductions, can she stay alive long enough to choose between the devotion of the noble and stalwart knight who has saved her life twice, the charm...more

I absolutely adored this! Elora was an amazing character and i loved, loved, loved all the guys:) They were funny and sweet.

From reading the synopsis I was rather reluctant to read because usually I fucking hate love triangles or better yet the dreaded love square (excuse me while I gag). But I was bored and it's summer so what the hell right? And it was amazing:)

Elora's family (view spoiler)[ gets murdered (hide spoiler)] and becuase of that her mentor literally pushed her into this gi...more

My Familiar Stranger was a wonderfully engrossing paranormal romance with just a dash of science fiction that grabbed me from page one and didn't let go!
Ms. Danann absolutely knows how to get a series going. My Familiar Stranger created a captivating new world with so many possibilities. With elves, beserkers, fairies, vampires and who knows what else running around a society parallel to our own there is so much potential! The world building was awesome. Through Danonn's vivid descriptions I fel...more

WOW! I read this book in what two days because I just couldn't put it down. "My Familiar Stranger: The Order of the Black Swan" by Victoria Danann was emotional, sweet, moving, funny, heart-wrenching, action-packed and totally enthralled me from the get go!

I don't want to give away any spoilers but I will try to dance around the top points.

The wonderful Elora is a woman-hero that defies most. She literally falls into the laps of defenders against vampires and other supernatural bad guys. Howeve...more

This book was a RIDE! I simply cannot say enough great things about Victoria Danann and the genius that is My Familiar Stranger. Danann's writing style is uniquely honest and captivates her audience with both plot and characters in a well-developed and thoughtful world (or "worlds" as it seems). I cannot believe that this book is only a $.99 read.

I have loved every page of this wonderful story. Fantasy and paranormal is not really my cup-of-tea, I tend to read historical fiction and classics, but this book was amazing. I have felt in love with the characters and enjoyed every unexpected turn. Elora is the perfect looking woman, extremely sexy, intelligent, funny, witty, loyal and skilled in many arts. It is no wonder she soon has three males fighting for her heart. To start with I wished she would choose Storm as he seemed her perfect ma...more

This book was reviewed for Musings of a bookworm

I was asked by the author to review this book and so I bought a copy and set about reading it. Now if I am honest I have to say I was expecting to be bored with in the first 10 pages because it was not a book of my choice but how wrong was I!! What actually got was a really interesting tight and ultimately fantastic story. This is clearly the opener to a series about the Knight and what Knight they are, all alpha and honourable. I do see shades of...more

Book Review of My Familiar Stranger by Victoria Danann

My Familiar Stranger by Victoria Danann
My Familiar Stranger is the first book in The Order of the Black Swan series by Victoria Danann. The book begins with Elora Laiken witnessing the death of her family and she is saved from death by Catalonius Monq, the tutor to the royal children. She is given a locket and Mong told she will find someone "very like me" and to give him the locket to retrieve the data within. He sent her through a portal i...more

My Familiar Stranger is the first book in The Order of the Black Swan series by Victoria Danann. It's a great paranormal romance that is hard to put down. While Elora Laiken's family is being slaughtered, she is pushed into an alternate dimension which saves her life. Everything in this dimension is pretty similar to her home, but yet different too. She is in a new place, without anyone she knows – and on top of that, she is healing from horrific injuries her body endured while being transferred...more

If you're looking for something new and different in PNR, you've come to the right place.

I write unapologetic romances with uniquely fresh perspectives on paranormal creatures, characters, and themes. Add a dash of scifi and a flourish of fantasy to enough humor to make you laugh out loud and enough steam to make you squirm in your chair. My heroines are independent femmes with flaws and minds of...more
