I have to say that I did not know what to expect in this book, but am very glad I tried it. The story is about a young woman that is pushed into an portal that transports her (not gently) into a parallel earth.

I decided I wanted to read a good paranormal/vampire novel. So, I went on a mission on amazon for a book that would work... I came upon this novel (which was free by the way) and decided to give it a try. Boy, am I glad I did. I loved it!

While I enjoy fantasy, I tend to stick closer to paranormal stories unless it is an author I know and love. Well, I now know and LOVE Victoria Danann! My Familiar Stranger: romancing the vampire hunters is the first of a seven book series with books 1-3 currently available in eBooks and print while book #4 Moonlight is due out in May of 2013. The Good: Okay, I am hooked! I was easily able to immerse myself completely in this wonderfully magical and surprising world that the author has created. Once I started reading it, I did not want to put it down and I sure did not want it to end! Not many books in this genre have the ability to make me giggle and flat out laugh out loud but this one did. I love the author’s sense of humor. It seems to be like mine…bordering a tad on the irreverent side. ;) Now, it really didn’t hurt as far as I was concerned that there is a sexy Vamp involved but he is not all there is to the story. I loved Elora. While there was some rescuing that went on, she was far from a constant damsel in distress. I think I am really going to like her…besides, she’s a redhead and how can you not love a redhead? ;)

The Bad: The only real downer that I was aware of were some typos and grammatical issues that can be easily corrected, as they will be in subsequent editions, no doubt.

The Snuggly: I hope you don’t mind cold showers because you are gonna need one after reading this! The men and the sex are beyond spicy, right on up into sizzling! It was such fun to read. ;) However, you do not need to worry. As Victoria puts it: Some steamy scenes. No menage. No BDSM.

My Familiar Stranger: romancing the vampire hunters is the perfect title for this first of the series book! After reading it, it is impossible to feel unfamiliar with what was previously a strange and new series. The entire story was exciting and interesting but the twists! Wow! Could not have foreseen that…and I mean that in the best of ways. Just be aware, these books MUST be read in order so it is good that you are starting with My Familiar Stranger. These books are definitely not for readers under the age of 18. However, if you love well-written Paranormal/Fantasy Romances packed with adventure and fun, The Order of the Black Swan and My Familiar Stranger: romancing the vampire hunters will be a hit with you for sure!

The entire book read like a summary! In the same paragraph she'd go from 3rd person perspective to 1st person from one character, then suddenly switch to 1st person on a different character, so, for example: Joe and Mary walked down the park... "I thought he was never going to notice my shoes" and suddenly I turn to her, and exclaim "I love those shoes!"

I took it to mean that there was going to be a girl sucked into another dimension that becomes part of a secret society and the whole book is spent ass-kicking their way through vampires while she finds love.

That is not what this book is. There is a girl who is sucked into another dimension and becomes a prisoner for some time at a secret society and then proves herself eventually and does become one. Then there is a crap ton of time spent doing absolutely nothing while everybody heals from various injuries. Then they go and stake out a club and nothing happens until the very last night and you get a lot of drama with very little vampire fighting and then back to the secret society for more healing and self discovery.

Then you have the love story. Love triangles or even love rectangles (ha ha ha) can be done well if the author devotes the time to making it work. This does not work and I got so frustrated with the love story that I almost stopped. Just to make sure you all got that there may be some spoilers, i'm putting this in the spoiler link

Then you get to the actual moment in the book where the fighting takes place. I was so peeved off when I realized that this book has so little to do with Vampires and more so to do with in fighting within the organization. The author should have just done away with the Paranormal and Vampire aspect. Those parts of the book were so minimal compared to the rest of the story (of course, you do get the Elf stuff thrown at you all over the place due to Ram).

With all that said, this book was long. I typically read a book in about 2-3 hours. This one took me much longer than that (of course, it could have just been the book itself that slowed me down). My honest opinion is that some of the stuff around the build up with the secondary relationships could be cut out and just focus on the primary relationship and you would still have the same book.

Like I said, I just didn't get this book. With all the rave reviews I expected more.

I both hated and loved this book. The setting was great, the characters were great, the story plot was awesome! And yet, the actual follow-through with writing needed to be seriously tweaked. It went too fast, many details were forgotten or added last-minute, and there should have been more time spent in between each event.

The characters were developed and personable. Though, it would've been nice to include more details about all of them. Perhaps show more about each of their personal lives.

I read this book back to back with the second and third books of this series in a collection on Smashbooks.

These books took my breath away! They have everything I look for in a good paranormal book,and more.

I made it about 48% of the way through, which seems to be where a few other readers have lost patience with the book.

I downloaded this as a freebie from Amazon for Kindle and it was a fairly blind reading. I didn't know that there was a love triangle, which is technically a love quadrangle since there are 3 guys vying for 1 girl's affection. If I had known, I would have skipped downloading this.

That's one of the things I liked about it, the fact that Danann took different bits from our world and shared them between the two dimensions - e.g. Elora has never tasted chocolate before (there's a great scene where she tastes blackforest gateaux for the firs time); and Storm, Ram and Kay, her rescuers and friends in this new dimension have never heard fairy stories before. Or as Ram insists on calling them Elf stories - for he's an elf and elves and fairies have been at war a long time in this dimension, though a truce holds.

Great fun, but serious at the same time, deals with Elora's new life, and her emotions over finding herself in a new dimension, she is annoyed with Monq for betraying her and at first finds it hard to relate to the Monq in the new reality she finds herself it; but she comes to terms with her new life and joins B team - Storm, Ram and Kay as their new team member to help clear out vampire in New York who have taken over tunnels previously built by Istvan Baka, an old vampire who now helps his old enemy Black Swan clear out the vampire in a hope of finding peace about his previous actions when he was an unthinking predator; remembering his human life unexpectedly returns some of his old humanity.

The books is also about relationships, those between B team, between Storm and Elora, between Elora and Ram and between Baka and Elora. Thoroughly recommended; I picked this up on free download for kindle not knowing what to expect, but am glad I did, I will certainly be looking out for the next book in the series.

My Familiar Stranger was a really fun read for me; it had parallel dimensions, knights, vampires, and elves. Elora is sent to another dimension after witnessing the slaughter of her family. Victoria Danann has built a great world with fantastic paranormal characters, as well as provided them with a personality that fits right in with this amazing story. At first My Familiar Stranger reminded me a little of The Black Dagger Brotherhood series with the same elements; Brothers fighting to protect the world from the big bad vampire villains. But soon I realized that this book is too unique for that. Victoria's knights contain different paranormal beings like elves, berserker, fairies, and one hell of a dog. The story contains a good piece of dry humor and some sexual tension in the form of a love triangle with a kick of Baka playing third that makes this an original read.

“Gave him wood!” He shook his head and reached for moisture at his eyes. “This just gets better and better.” All three members of B Team tensed when they realized Baka was in the alley. “She killed him with a toothpick that she grabbed out of some fellow’s mouth as she ran by. Did you know that?”

Ram, Kay, and Storm forgot being wary of Baka and simultaneously turned to look at Elora like she was an alien which, technically, she was. But they were looking at her like they’d never seen her before. Finally, she raised her hands.

There were also some minor issues, like the beginning that was set a little too slow. I think it was the extensive description that slowed it down too much and I believe that there were some parts that, for my taste, could have been cut to make the story flow a little better.

My Familiar Stranger has a lot of great characters. Everyone is so fascinating to read about. They all have their own story and how-to-handle-manuals. Personally, the Berserker Kay and the Vampire Baka were my favorite characters. I would have liked to read more about them, but maybe that will come in book 2 of the Black Swan Series. I hope every knight of The Order of the Black Swan will get his own book :)

This is a great book that combines different genres in an authentic manner. Victoria Danann has triggered my interest in wanting to read more about The Order of the Black Swan and all the characters. I can recommend this story to other adults, as well as adolescents who like to read in their favorite genre or get introduced to something new.(less)

I absolutely adored this! Elora was an amazing character and i loved, loved, loved all the guys:) They were funny and sweet.

My Familiar Stranger was a wonderfully engrossing paranormal romance with just a dash of science fiction that grabbed me from page one and didn't let go!

Battling their attentions, she immerses herself in the world she's now created. The question is, can she do just that before her life becomes forfeit, once and for all?

A far as portal stories goes, this one definitely began with a bang. The story immerses the reader from the get-go and keeps their attention glued with every turn of the page. I think Victoria did a lovely job in creating both the parallel universe and the one Elora finds herself in after she's unceremoniously shoved into the portal.

I've always wondered if the possibility of parallel universes does exist. It's one thing we'll never truly now, but we can definitely hypothesize theories of, right? A truly intriguing and very endearing read, My Familiar Stranger, is a book any one of any age will definitely enjoy. I look forward to catching up on more of the series soon.(less)

My Familiar Stranger is the first book in The Order of the Black Swan series by Victoria Danann. It's a great paranormal romance that is hard to put down.
